I went to both Paris shows (VIP on day 1) and it was hands down the best experience of my life so far. So amazing beyond words. To not only meet my favourite band of all-time in the flesh, but to also watch them perform from the front row on the 1st day (and still very close to the stage on day 2) felt so surreal. Seeing them perform some of my favourite songs of all-time (including dead tree, my number 1 favourite song) was so overwhelmingly amazing I cried multiple times. I got acknowledgments from Die, Toshiya, and Kyo for screaming so loudly every time they came to our side of the stage, and I can't describe how affirming it felt. Since yall follow me on here, you know how much this band means to me, and especially Kyo. This man is my biggest inspiration in regards to both his music and his artistic self-expression. I've never been so inspired by a musician before; I've never been this obsessed with a band before. This was a dream come true, one that I never thought could happen. Thank you so much to this most incredible band. No band will ever come close for me.

New EU budget rules to require cuts in public spending

New fiscal rules for the European Union would require cuts in net public spending next year, but critical investment needs would remain paramount, euro zone finance ministers declared on 11 March.

Based on the latest available data, the requirements of the revised economic governance framework would translate into an overall slightly contractionary fiscal stance in the euro area in 2025.

The Eurogroup’s announcement followed warnings from several experts that the so-called “revised economic governance framework,” agreed in trilogue discussions last month, risked jeopardising the EU’s ability to meet its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050.

It also comes against a backdrop of ongoing fiscal retrenchment across the EU: according to the European Commission’s latest forecast, the bloc’s overall budget deficit will fall from 3.2 per cent to 2.8 per cent this year. However, Pierre Gramegna, the managing director of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), denies that member states’ compliance with the new fiscal constraints will lead to a reduction in public investment.

“The focus should be… on cutting less productive expenditures, in particular, I think energy support measures, and on the other side and to avoid [a reduction of] public investment. Only if we manage to not reduce public investment will it be possible to boost the competitiveness of our European economies.”

It’s an open secret in fashion. Unsold inventory goes to the incinerator; excess handbags are slashed so they can’t be resold; perfectly usable products are sent to the landfill to avoid discounts and flash sales. The European Union wants to put an end to these unsustainable practices. On Monday, [December 4, 2023], it banned the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear.

“It is time to end the model of ‘take, make, dispose’ that is so harmful to our planet, our health and our economy,” MEP Alessandra Moretti said in a statement. “Banning the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear will contribute to a shift in the way fast fashion manufacturers produce their goods.”

This comes as part of a broader push to tighten sustainable fashion legislation, with new policies around ecodesign, greenwashing and textile waste phasing in over the next few years. The ban on destroying unsold goods will be among the longer lead times: large businesses have two years to comply, and SMEs have been granted up to six years. It’s not yet clear on whether the ban applies to companies headquartered in the EU, or any that operate there, as well as how this ban might impact regions outside of Europe.

For many, this is a welcome decision that indirectly tackles the controversial topics of overproduction and degrowth. Policymakers may not be directly telling brands to produce less, or placing limits on how many units they can make each year, but they are penalising those overproducing, which is a step in the right direction, says Eco-Age sustainability consultant Philippa Grogan. “This has been a dirty secret of the fashion industry for so long. The ban won’t end overproduction on its own, but hopefully it will compel brands to be better organised, more responsible and less greedy.”

Clarifications to come

There are some kinks to iron out, says Scott Lipinski, CEO of Fashion Council Germany and the European Fashion Alliance (EFA). The EFA is calling on the EU to clarify what it means by both “unsold goods” and “destruction”. Unsold goods, to the EFA, mean they are fit for consumption or sale (excluding counterfeits, samples or prototypes)...

The question of what happens to these unsold goods if they are not destroyed is yet to be answered. “Will they be shipped around the world? Will they be reused as deadstock or shredded and downcycled? Will outlet stores have an abundance of stock to sell?” asks Grogan.

Large companies will also have to disclose how many unsold consumer products they discard each year and why, a rule the EU is hoping will curb overproduction and destruction...

Could this shift supply chains?

For Dio Kurazawa, founder of sustainable fashion consultancy The Bear Scouts, this is an opportunity for brands to increase supply chain agility and wean themselves off the wholesale model so many rely on. “This is the time to get behind innovations like pre-order and on-demand manufacturing,” he says. “It’s a chance for brands to play with AI to understand the future of forecasting. Technology can help brands be more intentional with what they make, so they have less unsold goods in the first place.”

Grogan is equally optimistic about what this could mean for sustainable fashion in general. “It’s great to see that this is more ambitious than the EU’s original proposal and that it specifically calls out textiles. It demonstrates a willingness from policymakers to create a more robust system,” she says. “Banning the destruction of unsold goods might make brands rethink their production models and possibly better forecast their collections.”

One of the outstanding questions is over enforcement. Time and again, brands have used the lack of supply chain transparency in fashion as an excuse for bad behaviour. Part of the challenge with the EU’s new ban will be proving that brands are destroying unsold goods, not to mention how they’re doing it and to what extent, says Kurazawa. “Someone obviously knows what is happening and where, but will the EU?”"

Ok I'm sorry for bothering you on my own post BUT as a resident strawberry lover in the midst of my local strawberry season, climate and season have a very strong impact on strawberry flavor!

If your strawberries are sour, I'm going to guess you're probably buying them at a standard grocery store. Storebought are often lacking in flavor, and very tart. This is because they're picked before they're ripe, so they don't go bad in shipping (this is standard with most produce that travels long distances)

While strawberries are, in my experience, naturally more tart than I think people expect, when picked ripe and fresh, they are much sweeter and easier to enjoy on their own.

I live in a naturally mild and wet climate, for reference. Strawberry season is fairly short here, but when it is in season, no other strawberry compares

However, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship has proven challenging due to historical, political, and economic factors. This article explores the key elements necessary to unlock entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe, including regulatory changes, access to financing, education and training, and the development of a supportive ecosystem. To create a thriving entrepreneurial culture, it is crucial to address these factors and learn from best practices around the world.

Regulatory changes are essential in establishing an environment conducive to business creation and growth. By simplifying bureaucratic procedures and eliminating unnecessary red tape, countries can encourage the establishment of new businesses (Klapper, Laeven, & Rajan, 2006). Furthermore, implementing policies that protect property rights, ensure contract enforcement, and create a level playing field for competition can increase entrepreneurial activity (Djankov, La Porta, López-de-Silanes, & Shleifer, 2002).

Access to financing is a critical aspect of entrepreneurship, as it allows individuals to start and expand their businesses. Eastern European countries should work on developing a robust financial system that caters to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) (Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2005). This includes providing alternative financing options, such as venture capital and crowdfunding, to complement traditional bank loans.

Education and training play a vital role in shaping entrepreneurial mindsets and equipping individuals with the skills necessary to succeed in business. Eastern European countries should invest in education that promotes creativity, problem-solving, and risk-taking, as well as provide training programs tailored to the specific needs of entrepreneurs (Piperopoulos & Dimov, 2015). This includes fostering university-industry collaborations and promoting innovation through research and development.

Lastly, creating a supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurs is imperative. Networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and business incubators can all contribute to the growth and success of new ventures (Acs, Autio, & Szerb, 2014). In addition, fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing can help entrepreneurs overcome challenges and learn from one another.

By addressing these key elements, Eastern European countries can unlock the potential of their entrepreneurial talent and create a thriving culture of business. This, in turn, will contribute to economic growth, job creation, and a more vibrant and diverse economy.

The production of low carbon, plant-based insulating blocks by agricultural workers from farm materials could help to support rural economies and tackle labour shortages, experts believe.

A major new study will test if the materials, for use in local construction, could lead to a “Harvest to House” system of building.

The University of Exeter-led study will show if small-scale farmers could diversify into making sustainable building materials for use on their own farms, or for construction in the local area. This could also benefit their own businesses, communities and the environment.

Arable farm workers in the region will be involved in the small-scale trial of a manufacturing process. Researchers will explore the human, environmental, and infrastructural barriers and opportunities for production through working with farmers and farm workers.

A short animated, visual ‘manual’ of the pilot manufacturing system, in an accessible and easy to digest format that can be readily shared and referred to by time-pressed farmers and workers, as well as people outside agriculture.

The project is part of the Ecological Citizen(s) Network+, led by The Royal College of Art, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) at the University of York and Wrexham Glyndŵr University, as well as a range of partners from industry, charities, culture and civil society.
