In honor of BLACK HISTORY MONTH: My portrait of CATHAY WILLIAMS (1844-1893), the first black woman to enlist in the U.S. Army--but posed as a MAN under the pseudonym "William Cathay"--serving in the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment as a Buffalo soldier. BUFFALO SOLDIERS originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; the nickname was given to the black cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the American-Indian Wars. arlenschumer.com/historical #cathaywilliams #williamcathay #buffalosoldier #buffalosoldiers #arlenschumer #portrait #portraits #illustrationartists #illustrators @dgareps @richardsyrettstrangeplanet @nyadventureclub https://www.instagram.com/p/Co4-IZIL48W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

UNIT PROFILE – 10TH U.S. CAVALRY REGIMENT (BUFFALO SOLDIERS) A trailblazing all-Black cavalry unit and the original “Buffalo Soldier” regiment, the 10th Cav. earned renown for its conduct in the Indian Wars, the War with Spain, and 1916’s Punitive Expedition. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Congress reorganized and downsized the U.S. Army, authorizing it to form six all-Black regiments, two of which were cavalry units: the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiments (the four infantry regiments were quickly downsized to just two). Over three decades of fighting in the Indian Wars, the 10th and 9th Cav. participated in over 150 engagements, earning 17 Medals of Honor and the respect of their Native foes; the 10th Cav. was dubbed the “Buffalo Soldiers,” a nod to their courage and tenacity. The 10th Cav. furnished crack troops to the U.S. Army’s campaign in Cuba during the War with Spain in 1898, where they spearheaded the final assault up San Juan and Kettle Hills (the 10th Cav., the only unit to attack both peaks, took sizable casualties of around 20%). WWI hero John J. Pershing served as a young 1LT with the 10th Cav. and witnessed the Army’s capacity to foster racial harmony: “White regiments, black regiments … fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color … mindful only of their common duty as Americans.” During WWII the 10th Cav. did not see combat and was dissolved in 1944. After years of dormancy, the 10th Cav. was revived in 1958 as a racially integrated unit which continued the lineage of the famed Buffalo Soldiers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #BuffaloSoldier #IndianWars #SpanishAmericanWar #Cavalry #BlackHistoryMonth #ArmyHeritage Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Middle Tennessee Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co11qbKOrmh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some of the first park rangers in America weren’t rangers at all. They were Buffalo Soldiers — Black Americans who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War. On Buffalo Soldiers Day, we celebrate the legacy of these first-of-a-kind, trailblazing rangers.
These dedicated men protected wildlife from poachers, built trails and forged a proud legacy in our nation’s history. They made these accomplishments despite the racism and prejudice that they faced.
Interior continues to preserve and honor the history of these first rangers at places like @CharlesYoungNPS, Fort Selden National Historic Site, @YosemiteNPS and more.

This Decoration Day/Memorial Day we examine the remarkable life and career of Benjamin O. Davis Sr., the first Black man to attain the rank of General in the U.S. Army. Born in Washington, D.C. in either 1877 (his assertion when he enlisted) or 1880 (the more likely date), Davis attended the famed M Street/Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, where he excelled academically, enough to be able to attend classes at Howard University during his senior year. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1898 and almost immediately saw action in what would later be known as the Spanish-American War, as part of the 8th United States Volunteer Infantry (an all-Black regiment).
After the war the 8th Infantry disbanded and Davis joined the 10th Cavalry (aka, the Buffalo Soldiers), and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. One of Davis's mentors at the time was Col. Charles Young, himself one of West Point's first Black graduates and the first-ever Black man to reach the rank of Colonel (and almost certainly the topic of a future lesson in this series). With Young's recommendation, in 1901 Davis received a field officer's commission and became a Second Lieutenant. Over the course of the next few decades he served in a number of distinguished positions, to include teaching roles at Wilberforce University and also Tuskegee (for the duration of World War I). He married Elnora Dickerson in 1902, with whom he would raise a son and a daughter. By 1920, while stationed in the Philippines, Davis attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He made full Colonel in 1938, assuming command of the 369th Regiment (the "Harlem Hellfighters"), and in 1940 was appointed to the rank of Brigadier General.
By the time World War II was underway, Davis was nearly into his sixties when he was at last promoted to the rank of General. While he was stationed in Europe, he himself saw little action --relegated mostly to an inspection role-- but he made use of his elevated rank to push for desegregation amongst the units. After World War II he was appointed Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army, and in 1948 at last retired from military service in a ceremony presided over by President Truman. General Davis died in 1970 and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Significantly,
Davis's son Benjamin O. Davis Jr. would one day himself break barriers by becoming one of the very first Black men to attain the rank of General, in the U.S. Air Force.

Another full day in Manila beginning with a tour of the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, detailing and honoring the history and the role of the Philippines in World War II - a humbling and illuminating visit. Many, many American soldiers are buried here, and I realize that I know very little about this part of Philippines-US history and intend to learn more. In spite of the solemn setting, we had an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide (Carlos, aka Mr. Google) who kept things respectfully light and fun. Grateful for the experience 🇵🇭🇺🇸🎖️🪖✝️✡️🌳 . . @joatwood @zaneta.encarnacion @audie.decastro @livingcatrina @i.am.pam #philppines #manila #manilaamericancemetery #manilaamericancemeteryandmemorial #ww2 #philippineshistory #history #generalmcarthur #ishallreturn #travel #filipino #filipina #tattooer #ladytattooer #mestiza #filam #filipinoamerican #worldwar2 #leyte #buffalosoldiers (at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoC2FCFOSTD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
