The Hangman Bruce Wemple USA, 2024 ★ Yeah, it's bad. I was with the movie at the beginning -- the lore was simple but interesting enough but then the plot got needlessly convoluted, which just made the weak script much more evident. And the direction gets really sloppy at times.
And.. did they use stock music?

First Contact
We have met the future, and it is beige. Relentlessly beige. Writer-director Bruce Wemple’s FIRST CONTACT (2023, Shudder) feels like two movies sutured together, even though the two plots eventually intersect. It’s filled with ideas, both narrative and philosophical, that never get fully developed, because Wemple can’t seem to decide which of his two stories is the more important.
The plot we’ve seen is about a man (Chris Cimperman) possessed by some alien force that slowly turns him into a monster. The makeup when he’s still recognizably human is pretty good, but at times the story doesn’t make a lot of sense. After establishing his other plot, Wemple lurches into this one with no context. And he keeps cutting to this set of people about whom we know nothing for no apparent reason. The story itself seems confusing. In one scene, Cimperman sees duplicate versions of himself slightly further along in the transformation. Are they in his head? Are they real? I don’t know. Does Wemple? Cimperman’s new alien powers crop up as he needs them. It’s all very convenient. There’s one funny scene when an evangelical comes to the man’s door trying to get him to turn to Jesus because the end is near. The poor guy doesn’t know how close it is.
The more intriguing story involves an estranged brother and sister (James Liddell and Anna Shields) coming to their father’s upstate New York farm after he disappears. She’s an astrophysicist, like their father (Paul Kandarian, a really good character actor working out of Boston). He’s a former military man who’s always felt rejected because he didn’t have his sister’s brains. It’s a pairing out of a Howard Hawks film, but it goes nowhere. It’s less “Let’s learn from Hawks” than “Let’s copy Hawks and maybe it will work.” They have one basic transaction. She wants to complete their father’s experiments to contact an alien civilization. He argues that she should let their father stay dead, which makes no sense, particularly since every time they turn on the TV there’s a report about the world’s being on the brink of war because of increased UFO sightings. Until the plots come together, it’s all played on a dour level. At least Liddell is nice to look at, and they’re not bad actors. But even the best actor needs a plot that goes somewhere. So does the audience.

Chris: First Contact is a 2023 sci-fi film involving a mad scientist, dark matter, aliens, weird stuff, and it is so boring that the director spliced scenes together to make them more interesting, nothing good here at all, Avoid.
Richie: I would say the worst problem of the movie was the editing, the splicing of the scenes together really didn’t work, the plot was goofy, Avoid.
