DAWN OF THE BEAST - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Uncork'd Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A group of students venture deep into an area of the Northeastern wilderness known for its strange creature sightings in hopes of seeing Bigfoot. Soon, they learn that there is a much more sinister evil lurking in the woods, the Wendigo, and once the spirit knows you’re there, they will come for you. Who will survive in a battle between the two most notorious monsters of the forest?
REVIEW: DAWN OF THE BEAST is an interesting concept, almost like a scalded down Americianized version of “Godzilla vs. KIng Kong.” They’re noy giant titans, just our American legends and folklore. Clearly director Bruce Wemple knows how to make a creature film. It’s a mixed bag of scary monsters, kookie  characters, and gory moments that tries to please a wide audience of genre fans.
I liked the overall plot. I can’t think of a film where the Wendigo and Bigfoot faced off, of humans caught in the middle and there to be casualties. The basic idea is simply a Grimm Fairy tale - don’t go into the woods as there are sinister things lurking there. The story utilizes just a basic concept of these mythical creatures, and it serves its purpose. I think it's a solid film that probably could have been an even better film with a slightly bigger budget and a bit longer production time.
I enjoyed most of what they were trying to do here. The kookie characters seemed a bit much, over the top, and I was hoping they would be the first to go. The rest of the cast does an excellent job, are mostly likable, and actors in the creature suits did a fine job.
I like the visual and special effects. The gore was well done, a bit gratuitous in a few scenes, but okay it is a horror film. Again, I liked the creature designs. Also, I got the feeling that it was achieved through a nice balance of practical and visual effects.
There are a few things about the film that are rough, but still DAWN OF THE BEAST is a respectable piece of filmmaking. In some respects it almost feels like a sequel to “Monstrous,” which was also directed by Wemple and written by Shields. That film also dealt with Bigfoot and a disappearance. It’s almost as if they’re creating this universe of American folklore characters in much the same way Toho created the giant monsters. Based on what I’ve seen in these two films, I think Wemple and Shields need a studio to give them a chance to take their storyverse to the next level. In the meantime, DAWN OF THE BEAST is an okay view and would make an excellent double feature with “Monstrous.”
CAST: Adrian Burke, Ariella Mastroianni, Grant Schumacher, Willard Morgan, LeJon Woods, and Anna Shields. CREW: Director/Editor/Producer - Bruce Wemple; Screenplay - Anna Shields; Producers - Ryan Sloan, Roger M. Mayer, Nate Vandeusen, & Anna Shields; Score - Nate Vandeusen; Visual Effects - 377 Films & 4Shores Animation OFFICIAL: N.A. FACEBOOK: N.A. TWITTER: N.A.
