A Pigeon-fluencer Feathursday

This week’s post was inspired by a recent Guardian article on the rise of Pigeon-influencers on TikTok and their role in reviving the popularity of the oft-derided and underestimated birds.  

Throughout history, pigeons have provided sustenance (“squab”), labor (in the form of the “pigeon post”), and companionship to human populations. Though these days we may typically associate the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia, otherwise known as the common pigeon) with other animals classified as “pests” in urban landscapes, they are in fact understood to be the world's oldest domesticated bird. Historical documentation of pigeons can be found in hieroglyphic texts and art dating back as far as ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. According to Colin Jerolmack, professor of Sociology and Environmental Studies at NYU and author of The Global Pigeon, pigeons “have been in cities as long as we’ve had cities” and, prior to the technological innovation of the telegram, were “the most reliable messaging system in the world”. While “fancy” pigeons (like Frillbacks, English Magpies, Jacobin, and Archangel pigeons) were bred and kept as prized pets in the Victorian era, the North American Passenger Pigeon (or “wild pigeon”) was hunted to the point of extinction in the early 20th century.

To illustrate the complexity of our love-hate relationship with the birds we've selected a variety of illustrations and text from our collection and featured them alongside some images from outside sources.

Patriot by Alexei Navalny

The late Russian activist’s memoir is an insightful, sharp, even humorous account of his fight against Putin’s regime – and a warning to the world

Alexei Navalny was watching his favourite cartoon show, Rick and Morty, when he suddenly felt unwell. He was 21 minutes into an episode where Rick turns into a pickle. The late Russian opposition leader was on a flight back to Moscow after campaigning ahead of regional elections in the Siberian city of Tomsk in August 2020. Something was clearly wrong, and Navalny staggered to the bathroom.

There, he recalls, he had the grim realisation: “I’m done for.” He told a sceptical steward that he’d been poisoned and then lay down calmly in the aisle, facing a wall. Life didn’t flash before his eyes. Instead, he compares his experience of death – or near-death, as it turned out – to something from a dark fantasy. It was like being “kissed by a Dementor and a Nazgûl stands nearby”.

He is clear who gave the order to kill him with the nerve agent novichok: Vladimir Putin. Navalny calls Russia’s president a “bribe-taking old man” and a “vengeful runt” who sits on top of a “sinister regime”. The assassins were members of the FSB, the KGB’s successor agency. Navalny spent 18 days in a coma, waking up in hospital in Germany.

It was while recovering in Freiburg that he wrote the first part of his extraordinary memoir, Patriot. The second section consists of letters from prison, following his January 2021 return to Moscow, when he was dramatically arrested at the airport. Navalny says he embarked on an autobiography knowing the Kremlin could finish him off. “If they do finally whack me, this book will be my memorial,” he notes.

It took three years for his gallows humour prophecy to come true. Navalny died in February this year, his likely murder taking place in an Arctic penal colony. He was 47. Prison documents hint he was poisoned and the authorities removed the evidence: clothes, vomit, even snow he had come into contact with.

This is a brave and brilliant book, a luminous account of Navalny’s life and dark times. It is a challenge from beyond the grave to Russia’s murder-addicted rulers. You can hear his voice in the deft translation by Arch Tait and Stephen Dalziel: sharp, playful and lacking in self-pity. Nothing crushes him. Up until the end – his final “polar” entry is on 17 January 2024 – he radiates indomitable good humour.

Patriot includes a manifesto for how the country might be transformed: free elections, a constitutional assembly, decentralisation and a European orientation. Days before his murder, he predicted the Putin regime would crumble, while acknowledging the resilience of autocracies.

Trained as a lawyer, Navalny first attracted attention as a transparency activist. He bought shares in notoriously corrupt oil and gas companies and asked awkward questions at shareholder meetings. The Kremlin controlled TV and most newspapers, so Navalny wrote up his exposés online. In 2011 he founded FBK, an anti-corruption organisation which grew into a grassroots national movement run by volunteers. He expresses pride at the way his campaigns encouraged young Russians to take part in opposition politics. Police detained him for the first time in 2011 when he attended protests against rigged Duma elections. Undaunted, he stood two years later to be mayor of Moscow, coming second, before finding himself in an “endless cycle” of rallies, arrests and spells in custody.

The Kremlin’s response to all this was vicious. His brother Oleg was jailed after a fake trial, a provocateur threw green gunk at Navalny, blinding him in one eye. In 2016 he tried to run for president. His videos – of Putin’s tacky Sochi palace and former president Dmitry Medvedev’s dodgy schemes – attracted millions of views. Navalny writes movingly about his wife, Yulia, – whom he met on holiday in Turkey – as a soulmate throughout this period.

Given his understanding of Putin’s Stalinist methods, why did he return to Moscow? His answer is that the struggle to make Russia a normal state was “my life’s work”. He wasn’t prepared to dump his homeland or his convictions, he says. At first, jail conditions were bearable. Well-wishers sent sacks of letters and a tiramisu cake. In one dispatch, Navalny ponders the “amazing ability of human beings to adapt and derive pleasure from the most trivial things”, such as instant coffee.

Behind bars, he chatted to his cellmates and read. He preferred Maupassant to Flaubert and enjoyed Oliver Twist (though he wonders if Dickens got working-class dialogue right). The FSB spied on him 24/7; his warders wore body cameras and barked commands.

As conditions worsened, he made fewer diary entries. More criminal “convictions” piled up – for insulting a war veteran and for extremism. He was shuffled from one penitentiary to the next. Meanwhile, “perverted” prison staff refused to treat his back pain, prompting a hunger strike. He was categorised as a flight risk and woken throughout the night, put in a tiny punishment cell and denied his wife’s letters.

None of these privations stopped Navalny from denouncing Putin’s all-out invasion of Ukraine as an “unjust war of aggression”. The reason for the war is Putin’s desire to hold on to power at any cost, and an obsession with his “historical legacy”, he writes. Critics regard Navalny as a closet nationalist. But Patriot calls for Russia to withdraw its troops, respect Ukraine’s 1991 borders and pay compensation.

During one of Yulia’s visits, Navalny told her there was a “high probability” he would never get out of prison alive. “They will poison me,” he said. “I know,” she replied. He sketches out what this means – no chance to say goodbye, never meeting his grandchildren, “tasseled mortar boards tossed in the air in my absence”. Maybe an unmarked grave. His philosophy: hope for the best, expect the worst. His death is a terrible loss, for Russia and for all of us.

Publishers' Binding Thursday

This week we are sharing a book that we are adding to Special Collections from the library's general collections. It is the first printing of the first edition of North Coast and Other Poems by Scottish poet, novelist, and dramatist Robert Williams Buchanan (1841-1901). The book was published in 1868 in London by G. Routledge and Sons. It features illustrations by several artists, all engraved by the Brothers Dalziel, a prolific wood engraving business founded in London in 1839.

The covers feature Celtic-looking knot designs stamped in blue and gold, as well as blind stamping around the center rectangle with the author's name. The book was given as a prize to J.W. Wyatt at Christmas 1871. The prize appears to have been for Junior something-or-other, but I can't quite make out what the second word is. If anyone has ideas of what it might be, please let us know! The bookplate features the motto "alere flammam," which means "to feed the flame."

This is the fourth in our occasional series featuring luminaries of stage and screen with a strong personal and/or professional connection with Northeast England, inspired with thanks by @robbielewis. Previous profiles were of Jean Heywood, John Nightingale and Edward Wilson. This time, Sunderland born actor siblings Malcolm and Catherine Terris.

Malcolm Terris was born on January 11th, 1941, boarded at Barnard Castle School in County Durham, then worked as a cadet journalist at the Sunderland Echo before training as an actor.

He was active on British television from 1963, his style perfectly suited to larger than life characters, and is possibly best remembered for his role as Great War veteran and salt-of the-earth union leader, Matt Headley, in 34 episodes of the Tyneside interwar social-realism drama, When the Boat Comes In.

His more than 120 recorded screen credits include a variety of British television programmes, including Fall of Eagles, Doctor Who (Horns of Nimon, 1979), Reilly: Ace of Spies, three separate roles in Coronation Street, Our Friends in the North, The Bill, and a regular role in Rockliffe’s Babies. His final appearance was in Midsomer Murders in 2011.

His big screen appearances include as ship’s surgeon, with Anthony Hopkins as Bligh and Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, in The Bounty (1984), with Ricky Tomlinson in Mike Bassett: England Manager, and in Dickie Attenborough’s Chaplin, which starred Robert Downey Jnr in the title role. He has also appeared on stage including in productions of Othello and in a Broadway production of Hamlet.

He passed away at the artistes residential care home, Denville Hall, on June 6th, 2020, aged 79.

Catherine Terris was born in 1948, and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). She has been active in British television since 1972, appearing with her brother in seven episodes of When the Boat Comes In. Her other television work includes Z Cars, two roles in Coronation Street, Anna Karenina, Inspector Morse, Dalziel and Pascoe, Heartbeat, George Gently, and a regular role (15 episodes) in William and Mary with Martin Clunes and Julie Graham. She also appeared in the hugely successful feature film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

According to her page on the Coronation Street fan site, Corriepedia:

"...On stage she has appeared in productions of Faustus, A Rite Kwik Metal Tata, Andy Capp, Tight at the Back, Rose, Tom Jones, Billy Liar, Queuing for Everest and Into the Blue..."

Her most recent television screen credit is In the Club (BBC 2014-16) and latest big screen appearance was in the 2021 feature film, Martyrs Lane.

This chapter has two main blocks, first we enter Debbie's mind and see the aftermath and damage of her husband's violent disappearance. We then return to the recurrent theatrical dialogue form.

We begin right in Deborah’s room. The narration starts from a psychological close up shot of Debbie, so to speak. It then slowly moves apart from her (hand held camera maybe) to reveal through the narration that she is not alone at home. We learn this because we are told she is asking to be left alone as to avoid the empty consolations of strangers. Also, that someone begged her to accept the cares of a guard, but she refuses it:

“(...)to keep away any witness before whom she would have needed to make a spectacle of her pain(...)”

Making a spectacle of her pain, a guard, it all makes me think, given the context, of modes of punishment contemporary to Borel's wrting of the novel, such as future prisoners's expositions before being walked away to the different bagnes or urban jails, for example.

So her house is full of strangers, and there even is a guard in it. The palace’s men who had helped attack her husband are now inside her house. They have probably taken her to her room after she fainted, we don't know why they did this instead of leaving her on the street. The men also show no sign of wanting to leave, is she being detained by them in her own house? She definitely reads like a prisoner for the duration of the first half of the chapter. Borel is making explicit what he had only insinuated before, that any place is susceptible of becoming a cell if an aristocrat who willed it so (or their henchmen) is present.

We get as well, in this very short intro paragraph, the concept of kindness and consent being used by authorities to force into submission. The people who invaded her house and trapped her in it are also outwardly worried for her wellbeing and asking to accept care from one of the guards who maybe stabbed and fought and then took her husband away.  

But it appears that she is finally left alone reflecting on her situation, and her clear thoughts on how the world worked start to crumble.

But even if the men left, she still reads like a prisoner in anguish locked within four walls.

This is to me a novel of internal rebellions. When characters are alone acting aginst the powers that be, they cannot defeat them through actions, but they can win spiritually even if it costs them their lives.

The fiercefully religious Deborah (religion seems to be her rock and a political stance as well, in her social context it works for her as a tool for her to set boundaries in respect of her body autonomy that would be otherwise disregarded) starts to get angry at God, then at herself for getting angry at God. In her desperation she falls into self harm, but what she seeks through it, is freedom:

“(...) she struck her chest like a prisoner strikes the wall of his cell, to break it down and open a way out for her captive soul, revolted by the body that was forcing her to live.” *

Deborah had reflected about how the modern city is a prison in itself. The houses are boxes and corsets. But now even her own body has become a jail. Lorded by her brain, her body becomes an instrument of torture. The Night ofDeath that offered the Narrator sweet relief from mundane sufferings seems to suggest to Deborah that breaking her body would be a way to allow her soul to escape from the pain.

But she remembers her son, and her suicide attempts are aborted. She blames her son in a way for forcing her to stay alive.

She even wonders if it is fair for her son having given him a life he did not ask for, is existence such a valuable gift, she asks herself.

The next morning her bell rings, the narrator announces, revealing that this arduous process of self harm and suicidal thoughts that seemed eternal to the reader has lasted hours, reflecting the effect grieving and stress can have in a person. She is completely exhausted, but she makes the effort because she keeps the vain and irrational illusion that it might be Patrick (whom she thinks she saw die) saved from Death and free from his captors. The guards are gone, the strangers in her apartment as well. She opens the door and finds Fitz-Harris behind it. She tries to slam the door at him, he forces himself in because he wants to apologize to Patrick before leaving Paris, since he has been deported. Deborah thinks this is refined mockery on FH’s behalf, she thinks he was among the men who fought him the day before and killed him (this is when the theatrical mode section begins) FH reaction reveals that he hasn’t actually stabbed Patrick, Deborah sees that in his face because some attitudes cannot be faked. But she says F-H’s actions have lead to her husband’s death even if he hasn’t actually stabbed him.

F-H offers to help Deborah escape France, return to Ireland with him. If she doesn’t want to return to Ireland, he is willing to deprive himself for her sake. He sounds kind of flirty in a way that is completely out of place. Deborah refuses his offer because she hates him. She forbids him to approach her ever again. F-H, like Villepastour before him, calls her inhuman. I do believe there are echoes of Villepastour in F-H, he forces the door, attempts to flirt with her when she is in an extremely vulnerable position. The power imbalance is smaller here, but he is imposing his presence via physical strength, and now he attempts to manipulate her by calling her inhuman. He then reproaches her for not being as generous as Patrick was.

I never forgive, she replies. And like Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing (ugh vag joke why) she complains that only because she is a woman she doesn’t strike him down with a sword. Since she is a woman, and men’s weapons are out of her domain, she can only use old people’s weapon’s: a curse. (i like how Borel here introduces the idea that the aspects of femininity that are forced on propper women are a form of invalidity. She is completely able, yet she is forced into a role of physical submission to men. she doesn’t know how to use a sword, when men of her age and social standing all do) F-H leaves, not without making her responsible of his death because of her hard and unforgiving nature. He claims his repentance is sincere,,,

*[I never forgot the part in The 3 Musketeers where an imprisoned Milady, chest rising and falling like waves crashing against a fortress, laments that her powerful, masculine (just transcribing here, not agreeing) brain is trapped inside the weak body of a woman. It’s interesting to compare this passage with Deborah’s situation. On the one hand, Deborah is more self destructive than Milady who dreams of freedom and vengeance, but on the other, Deborah is confined by feminity in a cultural, not essentialist/constitutive way. Finally, Dumas and Borel do an Imagery handshake at representing the body itself as a jail]:
