"Rank instinct" is a pretty weird phrase, right!? But there are two parts to it. The instinct part makes sense, for the most part. Horses and bulls are both what we call "flight animals", where if you move into their personal bubbles, they will want to flee("flight"). When something is directly attacking them (in rodeos, the unwanted attention of the bucking rope/strap), they have to fight!

And this is why they buck! The "rank" part is what separates bulls/horses who are considered "more skilled/dangerous" from bulls/horses who are less so. A "rank bull" will likely buck harder, higher, kick faster, jump higher, spin faster, spin harder, and much more to try to get the cowboy off. A "less rank bull" wouldn't put as much effort into getting the cowboy off. They still might succeed, but they won't score as many points! (Remember how I said bulls also get scored? The more rank and challenging, the more points the bulls will score!)

Rodeo athletes are powered by forage! I can already hear your next question. Forage is basically hay and grass. Cattle and horses use that to power their bodies! Rodeo athletes are typically given what we call "high-protein" diets that help them build strong muscles.
