Today, the last Sunday in July is known as Reek Sunday in Ireland.
A traditional pilgrimage to the top of Ireland's most holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, takes place.
All 764 metres from sea level on steep slopes.
As part of the pilgrimage, to this mountain associated with Saint Patrick, some of the pilgrims walk all or part barefoot.

A Brocken spectre also called Brocken bow, mountain spectre, or spectre of the Brocken is the magnified (and apparently enormous) shadow of an observer cast in mid air upon any type of cloud opposite a strong light source.

Don't Stare at the Dark Watchers - Atlas Obscura
Have you ever felt like you're being watched?
It could be "dark watchers"!
These are tall visual phantoms with rainbow auras surrounding them.
We know these mysterious shadow 'witnesses' have been around since the Spanish came to California.
There's older versions of them around the world - especially the Brocken Spectre of Germany.
Natural illusions & pareidolia have been used to explain these shadowy forms.
But, what of a proper Lovecraftian story seed?
How about the rule(?) that quantum probability waves don't collapse - if they're not measured?
This rule has already been expanded to include reality itself!
So, what if you couldn't exist without a personal 'angel'?
Some thing that could only be met out in extremely remote places?
Could you bargain with such a being for a longer life?
I leave the rest up to you writers...
End?

meet my friend the brocken spectre
Brocken Spectres look spooky as all heck and fill me with joy. But what are they?
Brocken Spectres fill me with joy. They look spooky as all heck when they’re moving, as you can see in this article. But what are they? The Brocken Spectre materializes when a mountaineer gazes downwards into the mist from a ridge or peak, with the low sun positioned behind them. As the climber’s shadow extends forward through the mist, it creates the shadowy figure that is commonly referred to…

INTERESTING
I was writing out my thoughts on the Nutcracker-inspired imagery in Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion, when I came across the entry for the Lotte soldiers in the Material Book included in the Blu-Ray:

The fact that they’re described as tin soldiers is another allusion to The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and its use of toys in the battle against the Mouse King. What stood out to me is how the kaiju-sized ones shown in the film’s final act are designated as “Brocken-class.” This is, of course, a reference to the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz mountain range, which in traditional folklore–and as referenced in Goethe’s Faust–is where the witches celebrate on Walpurgis Night (a night whose name has great significance in the Madoka Magica universe). The term being applied to the gigantic Lottes is most likely an allusion to the Brocken Spectre, which may have also influenced the design for the Witch Kriemhild Gretchen in the original series.

The sky, a vast canvas of the natural world, has mesmerized humanity since time immemorial. From the colorful dance of the auroras to the surreal appearances of moonbows, the atmosphere is home to a myriad of phenomena that both baffle and amaze. These events, occurring high above or just on the horizon, serve as a bridge between the realms of scientific exploration and cultural folklore. This…
