I feel this illustration is a good example of visual communication. It's a character design for a dungeons and dragons campaign where I took inspiration from my culture of india and also took loose inspiration from a few other south and central asian sources to create a new cultural environment for a fantastical setting, using real world culture references to ground it in a sense of reality to communicate the type of climate and culture this character comes from by equating real world examples. I used fabric draping to reference the indian sari, forearm and hand designs to reference the south and central asian practice of mehendi/henna, I incorporated beaded patterns within the braids to replicate a paranda - used in south asia to reinforce or decorate braids, there is an eye symbol on a shoulder pad to create an allusion to the south and central asian believe of the evil eye or nazar, the trousers are meant to reflect pajama shalwar from pakistan

⚠️ ATTENTION UK COMRADES ⚠️
never in my life did i think i would be making a post like this but here goes.
what's happening in the university of brighton?
during the past week, the university of brighton has announced 110 staff redundancies in a bid to save almost £18m.
meanwhile, senior management have recently shelled out an almost identical sum of money to buy out the lease of a sports facility on campus - a decision which nobody asked for or wanted.
these redundancies will be finalised at the end of june and will have a catastrophic impact on learning conditions, which rely on the expertise of our lecturers. though the ripples of this decision will be felt throughout the university, it explicitly and disproportionately targets 'non-profitable' degrees such as humanities, arts, social sciences, etc.
for the staff made redundant, it could mean the end of their academic career due to a surplus of unemployed academics as a result of sector-wide lack of funding for teaching and research. this is also happening during a cost of living crisis.
lecturers on work visas could be forced to leave the country and may not be able to support their families. those who aren't made redundant will suffer from increased workload, larger class sizes, inability to conduct research and more students per member of staff.
the university of brighton offers a fantastic range of unique, interdisciplinary courses in the heart of the uk's queer capital, allowing our vibrant student community to benefit from intimate seminars that immensely benefit our learning. with some of our departments being cut by more than half, the loss of these will be absolutely devastating.
in the e-mail the student body were sent, we were told the redundancies 'wouldn't affect us', with zero acknowledgement of the relationship students build with their lecturers.
this is an attack on the job security and dignity of our valued body of educational staff. the vice chancellor, who takes home around £250,000 a year, said she 'needs to pay the gas bill'. we say human beings over buildings.
the student body cannot allow this. this sets a dangerous precedent for workers all over the country.
so what can we do to help?
let them know that this not okay. voice your concerns to the vice chancellor debra humphris, who can be contacted at [email protected]
spread information. tell your friends. kick up a fuss. stand in solidarity with staff and students. contact your local representatives and encourage them to offer support. jeremy corbyn has already given his!!
consider following @ uobsolidarity on instagram to stay updated.
here is a petition you can sign and some relevant news articles. here's how to find your mp.
SOLIDARITY FOREVER. FUCK GREED. PLEASE BOOST!!!

A groundbreaking study that was sponsored by the International Olympic Committee and released late last week sought to compare a range of athletic abilities between trans athletes and their cisgender counterparts. The finding that trans women athletes are at a relative disadvantage in many key physical areas relating to athletic ability and perform worse on cardiovascular tests than their cisgender counterparts could be the first step in fighting back against the conventional wisdom conservatives have spread that trans women’s participation is inherently unfair. Over the last several years, few anti-LGBTQ policies have taken off as quickly within mainstream politics as those banning trans women and girls from women’s and girls’ sports. Prompted by the success of trans college swimmer Lia Thomas, who won a national championship during her senior year, dozens of conservative states and sports administrators rushed headlong into outright bans on trans women’s rights to participate equally in sports. The political argument seemed simple; natural, even. We all know men are superior athletes to women, conservatives argued, so allowing trans women to compete with women would be inherently unfair. Because it  felt like common sense to a lot of people, it made for a compelling political argument. But the study that the IOC commissioned, and the University of Brighton conducted, found that while trans women are stronger in some respects, like grip strength, cis women have stronger lower bodies. The study also found that trans women have a similar bone density as their cis women counterparts, which rebuts a frequent refrain from conservatives who’ve argued otherwise to justify banning trans girls and women from sports. All the participants in this study participated in competitive sports or took part in physical training at least three times a week. The 35 trans athletes had to have completed at least one consecutive year of hormone replacement therapy. It’s just one study, so we should avoid drawing grand conclusions from it, but, at the very least, the study shows that the bodies of trans women who’ve been on at least one year of hormone replacement therapy are very, very different from cis men’s bodies. In their conclusion, researchers cautioned against hurdling into blanket bans on trans women’s participation in women’s sports and declared that using data comparing cis men and cis women’s bodies to justify these bans is wrong. It has become commonplace for anti-trans campaigners to make arguments against trans participation in sports by citing the difference between cis men’s and cis women’s bodies; in other words, pretending that trans women’s bodies are identical to those of cis men’s. [...] Then again, the trans athlete debate has never really been about fairness or safety in women’s sports. It’s always been about putting laws on the books that legally define trans women as men as a precedent for passing more anti-trans laws unrelated to sports. So this research will likely not make a difference in red state legislatures.
Katelyn Burns for MSNBC.com on the new study partially backed by the IOC that refutes anti-trans claims about trans athletes (04.22.2024)
Katelyn Burns wrote an opinion column on MSNBC.com pushing back against the anti-trans justifications used to ban trans women in women's sports, as a new study funded partially by the IOC published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reveals that that trans athletes are at a disadvantage compared to their cisgender counterparts.

The University of Brighton has announced its plans to make over 100 academic staff redundant in an effort to save costs despite clear signs of financial mismanagement evidenced by the University's recent investments. These redundancies threaten 400 academic staff and the School of Humanities in particular, and show the University's disregard for humanities and social science teaching and research.
Added to this is the University's most recent and sudden decision to permanently shut down Brighton's public Centre for Contemporary Art gallery.
Students at Brighton have taken to occupy executive offices in a peaceful protest for the last week, but articles are now coming out of the alleged mistreatment and verbal abuse from University staff who are intent on removing the students without meeting any demands. The occupying students have only one - no redundancies.
If you are a UK resident, by signing this petition you can show support to staff, students and the public who are opposing the plans for redundancies. If you live outside of the UK, please share this post.
If you are a current, prospective or past student at UoB or a member of another UK University, please consider also showing your support to the Humanities area here by following instructions to email your views to University executives.
University of Brighton staff plan strike in protest at over 100 proposed redundancies
Students occupy university offices over job cuts
University goes to court to stop student protest
The situation at the University of Brighton is worsening – but we’re fighting for justice

no because this is fucking CRAZY for me. and connects exactly to the post i was going to make after i finished cleaning the kitchen which im making rn instead lol. it’s CRAZY how much having things to look forward to like traveling and seeing a musical like.. make me happy. how much listening to my favorite songs matters for my sense of self. how i still know the words no matter how long it’s been since i last heard them. it’s CRAZY. i have been swallowed by depression and stasis for so fucking long and have forgotten so much of myself and experience every day as scraping by and being miserable but even the smallest little joys have the power to bring me back. buying golden oreos at the campus food store. doodling a cat when i want to doodle a cat. taking a walk outside even when there’s work to do. it’s CRAZY!!!!!!!! i heal myself by indulging myself. maybe there is hope for me.

This illustration consists of two characters from an original story that l've been developing, I used a reference image loosely for inspiration on posing.
My personal favourite part of this particular illustration is my use of colour and light to create a cohesive piece

StrangeSpot, Round Twenty Nine: Smith
Jamie does sweet things for his daughter Jewel, like casting spells to make the sky glow when she gets home from school. Aw.
Virginia does her sister-in-law a solid by turning her into a werewolf. JoAnn, for her part, carries it well. Those grey eyes!
Brighton does something unusual and searches for aliens with the telescope purely to gain a university scholarship.

mfw I realise I spoke the word out my mouth "mainverse svern is in a worse situation than fandomless svern bc he has a determined bad end whereas fandomless svern isn't past the point of no return yet" but simultaneously made the implications of how the fandomless shadow works significantly worse than the normal pokemon one
