Chapter Six of "A Blue Jean Serenade" Is Out Now!

13 Days of Halloween:Day 8. The Graveyard.

Summary:Hub visits a certain grave deep in the net. An old friend joins him.

The net was quieter than it usually was. Then again, it always seemed down in this particular area. There were no viruses to be found. No one here to cause trouble. Just a virtual recreation of a beautiful garden.

Hub looked around the gorgeous garden. Trees with leaves, flowers, and even fruit surrounded the place. There were many different flowers that decorated the place and even a small river ran through the garden. In the middle of the garden was a hill with a tree at the top of said hill filled with red leaves.

The whole sight seemed peaceful. So peaceful, that most probably wouldn't notice the large gravestones sitting underneath the tree. Hub sighed before walking up the hill and sitting down on his knees in front of the two graves.

"Here lies Hub Hikari."

It was strange, staring at his own grave, but he had gotten used to it over time. Hub Hikari, that's who he used to be, and technically, still is. Every time he looked at the grave, he felt a slight pain tug at him. He was supposed to grow up with his family and live life like a normal human boy would, instead, a terrible disease took his life from a young age and his father rebuilt him by using his DNA and creating a Net Navi for him to reside him. MegaMan.EXE, that's how most people knew him, but to close friends and family, he was Hub Hikari, Dr. Hikari's son and Lan's twin brother...

Lan... Hub reluctantly turned his eyes to the other grave. He felt a lump in his throat as he read it quietly to himself.

"Here lies Lan Hikari."

Lan... Lan was the best brother Hub could've asked for. He was outgoing, headstrong, and had a strong sense of justice. He was always a positive person. Always finding hope in the hardest of times. He always stood for what was right, no matter what. Most importantly, he always cared about the ones he valued most. He was at times, vulnerable and a little naive, but that was years ago when they were children. He missed those days, when they were young and full of life. He loved his family and always made time for his son, Patch. He would always tell his son about the amazing adventures that they went on. Hub remembered his own son, Remix, always asking him about their adventures from his perspective. Lan's smile always brought Hub some kind of reassurance and peace, and at the same time, thinking about it brought him great pain. It shouldn't have ended the way it did. He still had his life to live, still had time to spend with his wife, with his kids, friends...

"He didn't deserve to die..."

He muttered to himself as someone approached him before placing their hand on his shoulder and sitting down next to him.

"He meant a lot to you, didn't he?"

He flinched slightly as the voice spoke. He eyes glanced beside him to see ProtoMan.EXE next to him.

"Blues... What are you doing here?"

"I was looking for you. Seeing as how quiet you've been these last few months, I figured you'd be here. Plus, your wife was getting worried again."

"Oh... I see..."

He turned back and looked at the graves as the painful ache returned to his chest.

"He meant a lot to you, didn't you?"

"Of course, he was my brother... He ment everything to me... we've been together for so long..."

Blues nodded before continuing on.

"He was certainly an amazing person."

"Hehe, he was. He did some amazing things."

"Yeah, saving the world multiple times as a kid is probably the most impressive part."

"Heh, that's certainly true. Still, he made a lot of progress while working at Scilab."

"Redesigned the whole Net, fixed the Undernet's security, he even made specific safe space just for every Net Navi to live whenever they retired or become independent."

"Elysium, right? The perfect paradise on the Net? I'm honestly surprised at how well it's held up since he left this world..."

"Yeah... Thank goodness for that. I know he worked hard on it and came up with every way to keep it peaceful, especially after... you know... the war..."

Hub trailed off as he was lost in thought again. Blues sat there with him in silence for a few moments.

"The Great Net War... I think that's what people have called it... Its still hard to fathom that of all the things we'd deal with... was a war..."

"It all happened so suddenly... everything was chaotic and Gamma..."

"That day still haunts you, doesn't it? The day we stormed the base containing Gamma..."

"Yes... It was also the day... The day I lost him..."

Hub trailed off as the memory flooded his mind. Thousands of Net Navis and their operators stormed the enemy base. It was the place containing Gamma. A dangerous weapon that could destroy the world if used. He remembered reaching the device with Lan and learning that it was a trap meant for Lan. He was trapped inside the bomb and Hub tried to get him out of there, but to no avail. In one final effort to stop Gamma and save the world, Lan gave Hub one final order as his operator; to destroy Gamma's terminal by shooting it. This would not only nullifie the effects of the explosion but only target the base. It would also cost Lan his life. At first, Hub refused to comply. He wanted to save Lan and stop Gamma after getting him out. Lan, however, argued that they were out of time and that he was willing to give up his own life to save millions of people. With a solem look in his eyes, Hub aimed his buster at the terminal. A tear trailed down his cheek as he shot the terminal till it exploded, sending Hub backwards towards the entrance. After the explosion, the group searched for Lan, only to find his charred body underneath the remains of the bomb. Lan Hikari was no more...

The gentle squeeze of Blues' hand on Hub's shoulder was enough to make him snap out of his daydream. He looked at him, and although he couldn't see Blues eyes through the shades, Hub could tell that he was worried.

"You know, I don't think he'd be too happy to see you like this."

"I know but... He shouldn't have died! I could've saved him if I had just held out for him a little longer-"

"Look at me. I know you're hurting and yes, his death was unfair but, you did what he knew was right. Regardless if you destroyed the terminal or not, he still would've died. The fact that he asked you to destroy the bomb before it could explode, means one thing, he would give up his life to save people, more importantly, you."

"I... I've died before... I lost my life a long time ago... It should've been me that died... He still had a life... He still had people who were waiting on him and-"

"And he wanted you to live because you didn't actually have a chance to live said life when you were human. He wanted you to enjoy it, even if it meant giving up his own."

"He still had time... mine had already run out."

"Maybe he did still have time, but he was happy, content, satisfied with how his life turned out."

"But still... I just wish it didn't happen the way it did... He deserved better..."

"Indeed he did, he deserved to spend his last moments with family, not stuck in a death trap with no escape..."

Silence fell over the duo on what felt like hours before Blues spoke up again.

"By the way, Serenade has been looking for you."

"They have?"

"Yes... they told me to tell you that they had an offer for you."

"What kind of offer?"

"I don't exactly know but, they said it would be most helpful for you."

"Thank you, I'll have to visit them soon."

As he said this, he slowly stood up along with Blues, staring at the graves a little longer before turning around and heading home with his friend, but not before glancing at the graves one last time.
