Continuing with the holiday drawings, here’s Frost Walrus from Mega Man X4. ☃️ A Reploid with anger issues, he joined by the Repliforce to cause lots of trouble. True to his name, he does lots of ice themed attacks. From making giant snowballs to making icicles falling from the sky to sliding on the floor, Frost Walrus is quite a formidable foe. One of the many snow themed Mavericks in the Mega Man series. ☃️

Freij
Freije Known for their fringed ears, thick dark hair, and natural resistance the frigid temperatures of the north. Freije seals take on a white or pale-blue hue, contrasting against their dark skin. Typically asymmetrical and unique to each individual, they have been widely (and fittingly) remarked as resembling snowflakes and frost, consisting of radial pattern of crystal-like markings.
Matriar The military and naval prowess of Freij is recognized across Elothia, and its Matriar reflects that. As Leader and Admiral, She dons the military vestments of the region, although ornamented and embroidered to indicated Her regal station. She also carries on Her person, just as the officers under Her, a dagger and sabre. Typically these would be highly decorated commissioned works, much like Her chokha and kalpak. However the current Matriar has forgone the tradition, preferring to don and wield the standard arms of her men. As Impero recently saw a Patris leave the throne, Freij is likely to see one on theirs in the coming centuries as the current Matriar has only one son and seemingly no interest in bearing another child.
Czars State officials and Generals to Her Majesty. Much like the Matriar, Czars are outfitted in military garb and keep a dagger and sabre on their person. While still decorated to denote them as officers of import, it is not to the level of the Matriar.
Citizens Despite the high tolerance to the northern climate that they have become known for, Freije are born incredibly susceptible to the cold. Newborns are heavily swaddled in thick furs and kept indoors for the most of their first year. Even when younglings are finally able to be brought outdoors, they do so thoroughly bundled up, almost comically, in several layers of thick clothing and furs.
It's not until adolescense that the Freije's cold tolerance truly begin to build up. They begin to strip away their heavy coats, scarves and furs, and many, many, layers as the years proceed, and by their first century the typical Freije can brush off the low temperatures with far lighter apparel. To the outsider experiencing the bite of Freij's Spring chill for the first time, they may even look underdressed.
In opposition to this are the region's wealthier merchants, barons, and city officials. Setting themselves up at higher altitudes, far above the crowded docks and fish markets, even their natural resistance isn't quite enough to keep out the colder mountain winds. As a result, upper class Draken remain relatively bundled up well after maturing - a fact that's earned the ridicule of many common folk, thinking it make them look childish.

I kinda feel honored to witness the release of a new beatles song (which is btw really really good, I became a little melancholy). I mean, hey they are the most famous rockband (and, if you ask me, the best) and they made history and their songs are like so old, but still famous and now they are releasing another one?! My grandparents listened to them 60 years ago and a lot of people are like "What, you listen to the Beatles? Aren't they, you know, a bit old for you? Why don't you just listen to nowaday's music? Their songs are so old." But now there is a new song and they showed that they did not forget their fans, no matter if they are teenagers, children or adults.
So I feel kind of honored, you know? Don't know if you feel the same, but I wanted to share this with you.
Oh, I’m so with you. I’m old enough that I fell in love with the Beatles during Anthology, and let me tell you, it was an amazing time. New singles and albums coming out, AHDN and Help movies being re-released on video, Beatles posters and merch in every shop, music tv shows playing Rain and Paperback Writer vids as if they were brand new.
I ransacked my mum’s old record collection (who was there the first time, and is still bitter she wasn’t allowed to see them play at Lewisham Odeon), and this year I took her to visit Abbey Road Studio 2, where that With The Beatles LP she gave me was first recorded.
Derek Taylor said in 1964 that ‘the kids of AD 2000 will draw from the music much the same sense of well being and warmth as we do today’. David Frost joked in 1964 that Paul probably wouldn’t retire until the year 2010. John said that he hoped I Am The Walrus would still be interesting 100 years later. They were all right, but also grossly underestimated things.
So yeah, the fact that today there’s a brand new Beatles song being released, and that the people listening to it will include people that were there the first time, people that grew up listening to them, and brand new fans who have listened to them for the first time today… it’s a lot.
And one day, Paul and Ringo and all of us will be gone. And people will still be listening to The Beatles.

Me, having lunch with Slovenian colleague: So, how does it work with having three versions of Father Christmas, do you celebrate them all on the same day? Because there's Santa Claus, St Nicholas and then...Dedek...ok I know it's NOT "Mrož" because that's "walrus"...
Slovenian colleague (probably dying of laughter on the inside): Dedek Mraz.
Me: Oh right because "mraz" is "cold" or "frost" right?
Slovenian colleague: How do you even know the word for "walrus" in Slovenian lol
Me (internally):
youtube
Me (aloud): I have some truly random words in my vocabulary lol.
Me: Do you think I can get extra credit for it on my oral exam? How would I even get that into an answer to a question?
Slovenian colleague: <thinks for a bit>
Slovenian colleague: Ooh! You could say "ah, to je težko vprašanje. težko kot mrož". Because težko can be difficult OR heavy!
Me: NICE

Nuuk at night - looking south from Qinngorput suburb. In Greenlandic (and other Inuit dialects) the aurora are called arsarnerit, literally “ball games”.
According to this paper by Robert Holzworth: “the aurora represented the struggles of the spirits as they played football, as is shown in the following excerpt from the account of the Fifth Thule Expedition by Rasmussen [1929]:
The dead suffer no hardship, wherever they may go, but most prefer nevertheless to dwell in the Land of Day, where the pleasures appear to be without limit. Here, they are constantly playing ball, the Eskimos' favourite game, laughing and singing, and the ball they play with is the skull of a walrus. The object is to kick the skull in such a manner that it always falls with its tusks downward, and thus sticks fast in the ground. It is this ball game of the departed souls that appears as the aurora borealis, and is heard as a whistling, rustling, crackling sound. The noise is made by the souls as they run across the frost-hardened snow of the heavens. If one happens to be out alone at night when the aurora borealis is visible, and hears this whistling sound, one has only to whistle in return and the lights will come nearer, out of curiosity.”

Trick or Treat! What's a favorite Easter egg about your fics?
Thanks for the ask! I think the closest I get to Easter eggs in my fics is the reuse of characters, businesses, animals, and objects across my fics. These can be fairly obvious, such as recurring restaurants like Ding's Dumplings or Kashiba's Noodle House, or more subtle, like Asami singing a nonsensical lullaby about a "frost potato" in one fic, a reference to a mysterious dinner dish General Iroh orders in a completely different AU. Asami frequently buys fancy dresses from Rania Harcham, a famous Republic City designer, who in later fics turns out once employed her father as a tailor and all-purpose mechanic in her dress shop long before Asami was born, and who also designed the Equalist uniforms. There's a place called the Night Market that is referenced in several fics but never actually shown. What's the Night Market? Maybe one day I'll find out.
I think the recurrence of "hank" --- a mystery meat which turns out to be a mountain-going creature called an alpine walrus --- as a food is one of my favorite examples of these. Nobody ever knows what the fuck hank is and I find that hilarious.

hmmm some random ahit holiday headcanons
- The mafia celebrate a holiday called Fishmas. It's basically Christmas except everything is fish themed. Their holiday lights are shaped like fish. It never snows in mafia town and I'm pretty sure the only trees there are palm trees, so they decorate the palm trees with lights and garlands and stuff. It's chillier than usual in winter even if there's no snow so they might dress a bit warmer than usual but probably not heavy coats or anything
- the people originally from the island don't celebrate that, though, it's just the mafia. Mu used to celebrate a holiday called Star Day with her family. It was celebrated winter solstice (the longest night of the year) and is usually spent stargazing with friends and family. Stories would be shared about constellations, like legends and mythology and stuff. Mu doesn't really celebrate anymore because she doesn't have a way of getting decorations and if she tried to throw a party of any kind the mafia would ruin it, but she might still try to give little gifts to the coffee clerks and stuff.
- idk what they'd call it but I think the owls would like. get a week off of work and school and all that to spend at home with family. Probably a lot of bird food, like idk birdseed pie or something. Conductor spends the holiday with his whole family, they all get together (his brothers, kids, grandkids, etc.) and eat a big meal. They don't really give gifts other than the food, but Cond usually tries to release a holiday movie before then and he'd watch that with his family. It's cold so they hang out around the fire place. Cond probably drinks too much =/
- Penguins just celebrate the new year. Celebrations are pretty much the same as normal (as in our world I mean), but again I think Grooves releases a holiday movie. He gets very dressed up and throws a big party. He would absolutely have those sunglasses that say the year on them. He gets gifts for like, all the penguins, and they all get gifts for him too. How do they determine the time (for midnight) if they're on the moon you ask? Um lol idk I don't care don't talk to me
- Subcon has a very old holiday called Day of the Frost that is based on an old legend that was probably true about a being with ice powers that covered the world in ice and snow. (Very old legend, started long before Vanessa was born, I say it's probably true because someone before her probably had ice powers, maybe even her ancestor or something.) Because of the legend's nature being kinda creepy, the holiday generally has a campfire story kinda tradition (except it's more often around a fireplace instead of a campfire). Snatcher owns a lot of old books that were common day of the frost stories, and he still reads them sometimes around the holidays.
- it does snow in Subcon in winter, but it's usually a pretty light snow (what with the constantly burning forests and shit lol) unless it's near Vanessa's manner, where it gets pecking blizzards. The fire spirits have trouble burning bright enough to die in the cold, but they try to burn as bright as they can, so they might stay indoors or huddle up close to each-other by a fire.
- Alpine celebrates Twilight Fest, which is about celebrating their history and the Twilight Goat through spending time with their community with games and treats. At home, they'd probably eat a lot of soups and pastries, and common festival food would include a lot of sweets and maybe some kind of nut coated in cinnamon or caramel or something. Like Star Day, it can include star gazing and discussion of constellations, but it's usually a bit more focused on ringing bells and playing songs.
- The ocean would be frozen over in winter, so boats would have a hard time going anywhere lol. The Walrus Captain and the seals wouldn't have work because of that. Not sure if they'd have a specific holiday, but they'd get a break from work. I could picture the seals making snowmen or something tbh.
- I think the metro also just celebrates New Year? A lot of the stores probably go on sale for people to buy gifts. A lot of winter-specific foods and drinks at the restaurants, like hot chocolate with peppermint or something. Timmy just goes to McDonyald's to eat chicken nuggets because he doesn't care but Bow would probably love the holiday drinks. A lot of holiday decorations all over the place, lots of pretty lights and stuff.
- Hat and Bow din't really celebrate any winter holidays back home, but they're happy to join their friends to celebrate whatever on this planet. Some of these take place over multiple days, so they have the time to celebrate a buncha stuff. I imagine they'd both prioritize spending time with Mu, just so that she has someone to talk about the island's old holidays with and have a little mini celebration or party. Maybe they'd also get cooking cat, and they'd bake holiday treats together. Hat and Bow could maybe try to get some decorations together for Mu's cave.
- Not sure about badge seller and tourist. Idk if badge is even from that world?? They feel like they might be from another dimension so idk if there are holidays there lol. I can't really picture them celebrating much. Tourist might celebrate something but idk what, he'd probably enjoy travelling around and seeing the winter holidays all over though.
- Hat and Bow like the holiday lights, they put those around the ship. Maybe they give Rumbi a silly little Santa hat or something.

Tagged by @chayscribbles to find the given words in my WIP(s). Her words for me are fall, red, tree, and chill.
fall
Witches could give less of a shit who fucks or falls in love with who, but all of them and Eddie in particular are all too aware that the same can't be said for seculars. Eddie has absolutely no skill in the fickle art of subtlety. She has no idea if she was meant to pretend they could still have this chemistry if they weren't both bent the rest of the time too.
from Curse The Messenger draft 1.4, currently 30k
red
The light through the blinds is red-orange, going yellower in smooth arcs when car headlights pass outside. When Eddie closes the door behind her, the Watchtower logo casts its shadow backwards over the wood floors, rippling when Eddie's body passes through it. Ensconced behind the frosted window and the night, it's like Eddie is in her own world. She's transported into an old movie, the picture hazy with cigarette smoke and going brown as the film ages. She can imagine bittersweet jazz that would play on the soundtrack for her entrance perfectly. She digs out one of Fred's emergency cigarettes and lights it up to complete the facade.
from Curse The Messenger Sign up here to be tagged when I post about this project.
tree
Tonight, he feeds Richie the lime wedge out of his gin, Richie struggling momentarily past the awful tree sap taste of the alcohol before making it to the fresh citrus burst. It's sexy, until Richie grins wide around the rind and claims to be a walrus with a serious dental problem. Eddie snorts gin out his nose and Richie spits the lime out in his face laughing at how stupid he looks.
from gold rush, currently 29k
chill
Richie is antsy all through security, Steve's presence at his side failing to make him chill out. He silently rages at every attractive young business professional in front of him who takes their sweet time putting their shiny black dress shoes back on. The fact that the plane won't take off any sooner even if every single passenger gets there early doesn't make a difference.
