New York City Jazz Playlist
A variety of styles from a variety of eras, but all fantastic jazz made by New Yorkers, either native or transplanted. Clocking in at under an hour, these ten tracks span the late 1930s to the late  1990s, mixing vocal tracks and instrumentals, live performances and studio tracks. There’s a bunch of legends like Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, as well as a couple lesser-known artists like Dave Hillyard sprinkled in. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, also finds herself on here, a couple years before she would launch into the stratosphere.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
Glen Miller - “Glen Miller’s in the Mood” Louis Armstrong - “Mack the Knife” Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - “Moanin’” Miles Davis - “So What” Tony Bennett - “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” Stan Getz - “The Gril From Ipanema” Aretha Franklin - “Love for Sale” Buddy Rich and His Orchestra feat. Dizzy Gillespie - “Two Bass Hit” Weather Report - “Birdland” The Dave Hillyard Rocksteady 7 - “Playtime”
Playlist is also on YouTube and YouTube Music, with three extra bonus tracks:
Billy Taylor - “I Wish I Knew” The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - “The Sticks” Cannonball Adderley - “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”
More to come, eventually.

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco // Cannonball Adderley (Riverside RLP 12-311)
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco // Cannonball Adderley (Riverside RLP 12-311)
2019 is almost over and I have a ton of albums that I’ve acquired throughout the year that I haven’t yet gotten around to writing about. In the waning days of the decade, I’m attempting to correct that. The last time I was back home in California this past March, I made a stop by the local record store and grabbed numerous albums. My grandpa made comments on what I had gotten, many of which I…

Spontaneous Combustion – Cannonball Adderley
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco is the album credited as launching the genre “soul jazz”, bridging the gap between bebop and funk. Adderley himself was not found of the term:
We were pressured quite heavily by Riverside Records when they discovered there was a word called 'soul'. We became, from an image point of view, soul jazz artists. They kept promoting us that way and I kept deliberately fighting it, to the extent that it became a game.
Even though Cannonball didn’t like the soul jazz label, his tune, Spontaneous Combustion, perfectly epitomises the gospel-informed, down-home, blues sound, including a hallmark “call-and-response between Cannonball on alto sax and his brother Nat on cornet.
Anchoring the horns of the Adderley brothers is the rhythm section of Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums.
The album broke new ground as a live recording taped in a noisy club environment, at San Francisco’s The Jazz Workshop in 1959. It was described by one producer and jazz critic as "the birth of contemporary live recording", and it became the new staple for jazz record producers.

#RiversideRecords ‎– VIJ-4030 冒頭 "Straight, No Chaser" Milestoneレーベル #CannonballAdderley (as) #SamJones (b) #NatAdderley (cor) #LouisHayes (ds) # BobbyTimmons (p) ライヴ名作"Cannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco" 1959年10月18or20日録音、マイルス・セクステットを退団後、弟のナット・アダレイと満を持して再結成したクインテットによる、キャノンボールのリバーサイド時代最大のヒット・アルバム。 Side1の2曲目 "Know What I Mean?" Take 3 #CannonballAdderley (as) #SamJones (b) #PhillyJoe Jones (ds) #BillEvans (p) #BlueMitchell (tp) "Portrait Of Cannonball" 1958年7月1日録音、自己のリーダ作としてRiversideレーベルに吹き込んだ一作目で、エキサイティングなハードバップ・アルバムの1つ。 https://www.instagram.com/p/CepyTCLPC7H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Saint John Coltrane: The San Francisco Church Built On A Love Supreme
Tumblr media
“Little of San Francisco today is as it was half a century ago. But at the corner of Turk Boulevard and Lyon Street stands a true survivor: the Church of St. John Coltrane. Though officially founded in 1971, the roots of this unique musical-religious institution (previously featured here on Open Culture) go back further still. ‘It was our first wedding anniversary, September 18, 1965 and we celebrated the occasion by going to the Jazz Workshop,’ write founders Franzo and Marina King on the Church’s web site. ‘When John Coltrane came onto the stage we could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit moving with him.’ Overcome with the sense that Coltrane was playing directly to them, ‘we did not talk to each other during the performance because we were caught up in what later would be known as our Sound Baptism.’ Or as Marina puts it in this new short documentary from NPR’s Jazz Night in America, ‘The holy ghost fell in a jazz club in 1965, and our lives were changed forever.’ ...”

1960s Jazz Playlist
The field of jazz in the 1960s was really vast and varied. There were so many styles, so many artists, and so many scenes. One cannot possibly do the decade justice in a handful of songs, so, instead, this playlist is a mix of classics with lesser-known and totally unknown songs. You’ll find legendary vocalists like Dinah Washington, Tony Bennett, and the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, before she earned her sobriquet. There’s brilliant instrumentals like Oscar Peterson’s plaintive “Hymn to Freedom” and jaunts from the likes of Jimmy Smith and Cannonball Adderley. The garage flavorings of the virtually unknown Quintette Plus appear on here twice, and closing out the whole thing is the smooth Hawaiian cocktail style of Arthur Lyman.
This playlist, like all the playlists I post, is ordered as chronologically as possible.
Dinah Washington - “Mad About the Boy” Tony Bennett - “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” Oscar Peterson - “Hymn to Freedom” Billy Taylor Trio - “I Wish I Knew” Aretha Franklin - “Love for Sale” The Quintette Plus - “Summertime” The Quintette Plus - “The Work Song” Jimmy Smith - “I Got My Mojo Working” The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - “The Sticks” Cannonball Adderley - “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” Arthur Lyman Group - “Sunny”
This playlist is also on YouTube Music.
