🤔 Why Am I So Moody? Blame the Blood Sugar Rollercoaster! 🎢😠
Ever feel like your mood is swinging wildly for no apparent reason? 널 One minute you're fine, the next you're irritable, suddenly anxious, or crashing with fatigue? While many factors influence our emotions, one major sneaky culprit might be hiding in your last meal or snack... 🍪🍩🥤
It's the infamous Blood Sugar Rollercoaster. Here’s how it messes with your mood:
The SPIKE: When you eat foods high in processed sugar or refined carbohydrates (think candy, soda, white bread, sugary cereals) without much protein, fat, or fiber, your blood sugar shoots up rapidly. You might feel a temporary burst of energy or even euphoria.
The Insulin Rush: Your body releases insulin to quickly shuttle all that sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells. Sometimes, especially with large sugar loads, it overreacts.
The CRASH: Insulin works too well, causing your blood sugar to plummet quickly and fall below optimal levels (hypoglycemia).
THIS is where the mood swings kick in. That crash isn't just about feeling physically tired. Your body perceives low blood sugar as an emergency and triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
This hormonal surge can manifest as:
Irritability & Snappiness: Hello, "hangry" monster! 😠
Increased Anxiety or Jitters: Feeling suddenly worried or on edge. 😟
Sudden, Overwhelming Fatigue: Brain fog descends, energy vanishes. 😴🌫️
Difficulty Concentrating: Your brain needs stable fuel! 🤔
Intensified Cravings: Your body screams for another quick sugar fix to bring levels back up, perpetuating the cycle. 🍭
What Sends You on This Ride?
Sugary drinks (soda, sweetened coffees, energy drinks)
Candy, cookies, pastries, doughnuts
White bread, white pasta, white rice (especially eaten alone)
Many processed breakfast cereals
Large amounts of simple carbs without balancing nutrients
How to Get Off the Rollercoaster & Stabilize Your Mood:
It's all about keeping blood sugar levels steady:
⚖️ Balance Your Plate: Always aim to pair carbohydrates with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. These slow down sugar absorption. (Think apple + almond butter, not just apple juice; chicken + brown rice + veggies, not just pasta).
🌾 Choose Complex Carbs: Opt for whole grains (oats, quinoa, brown rice), legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Their fiber content helps stabilize blood sugar.
🍽️ Eat Regularly: Avoid skipping meals, which can lead to blood sugar dips and subsequent overeating/poor choices.
💧 Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can sometimes mimic hunger or fatigue.
🧐 Read Labels: Be mindful of added sugars hiding in processed foods (sauces, dressings, yogurts).
Your food choices directly influence your brain chemistry and emotional state. Fueling your body consistently with balanced, whole foods isn't just good for physical health – it's fundamental for mental well-being too! ✨
Do you notice a link between what you eat and how you feel emotionally? 👇 Got any go-to balanced snacks that keep you steady? Share below or reblog if this resonates!

I'm in the final year of my Bachelor of Human Nutrition and thought I would share some helpful things I've learnt that I'm currently implementing (not a healthcare professional, consultant you doctor before making any changes blah blah blah)
Things that have helped me recently that are supported by current science that have helped me lose 4.2kg/9lbs since the end of 2024 without trying honestly:
Increased fibre intake:
Studies have shown that fibre can increase GLP-1 (the same pathway ozempic cranks to x100000000), delay stomach emptying, can regulate blood sugar, and promotes beneficial gut bacteria. It can also help you with bowel movements 💩 you need to make sure you get your recommended daily amount of water intake, or it can back you up 😅
I have been taking fibre capsules (as per instructions on packaging) and I've noticed that there is a decrease in my appetite and my binge eating behaviours.
Apple cider vinegar (I know, revolution lol)
There is some evidence that ACV can assist in lowering post-meal insulin response/blood sugar levels.
It also just tastes nasty and takes my mind or eating.
I take 1 cup of water and mix in 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Allegedly you're meant to do it 30min before you eat but I just do it anytime before eating.

Diabetes and Nerve Damage: The Numbness and Tingling ⚡

Understanding Diabetic Neuropathy
Ever experienced a pins-and-needles sensation or numbness in your hands or feet? If you have diabetes, you might be familiar with this uncomfortable feeling. This condition, known as diabetic neuropathy, occurs when high blood sugar levels damage nerves over time.
How Does Diabetes Affect Your Nerves?
When your blood sugar is consistently high, it can damage the small blood vessels that supply your nerves with the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. This damage can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:
Numbness and tingling: This is often the first sign of diabetic neuropathy. You may feel like you're wearing gloves or socks that are too tight.Pain: Nerve damage can cause sharp, shooting pains or a burning sensation.Weakness: Muscles may become weak, making it difficult to perform daily tasks.Loss of balance and coordination: Damage to the nerves in your feet can increase your risk of falls.Digestive problems: Neuropathy can affect the nerves in your digestive system, leading to constipation, diarrhea, or difficulty swallowing.
Types of Diabetic Neuropathy
There are different types of diabetic neuropathy, each affecting different parts of the body: Peripheral neuropathy: This is the most common type and affects the nerves in your hands and feet.Autonomic neuropathy: This affects the nerves that control your heart, blood pressure, and digestive system.Proximal neuropathy: This affects the nerves in your thighs, hips, and buttocks.Managing Diabetic NeuropathyWhile there is no cure for diabetic neuropathy, there are several ways to manage the symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease:
Strict blood sugar control: Keeping your blood sugar levels within a healthy range is the most important thing you can do to protect your nerves.Pain management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, and physical therapy can help relieve pain.Foot care: Regular foot exams and proper foot care can help prevent ulcers and infections.Lifestyle changes: Quit smoking, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise regularly.Living with Diabetic NeuropathyLiving with diabetic neuropathy can be challenging, but with the right management, you can still enjoy a good quality of life. It's important to work closely with your healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan.
Remember, you're not alone. There are many people living with diabetic neuropathy who have found ways to manage their condition and live fulfilling lives.

Welcome to the Blog!
Hello! Im TypicalTypeOne or TT1 for short! My blog is solely dedicated to my journey as a type one diabetic. I noticed that while there’s a lot of great info on the internet, there wasn’t a place to answer a lot of finer questions and details for type ones.
On top of that the spotlight on health and lifestyle only ever seems to be for type two diabetics, leaving me rather frustrated there wasn’t a source I could go to to hear about other type 1 experiences; how they tackle health and diet, great food recommendations, etc.
So this blog is my gift to all who come after me, who have those same questions, who wish they had this resource to answer the questions the internet just didn’t have otherwise. I hope you find my blog interesting and helpful!
Disclaimer: I am /not/ a medical professional, and not every individual is the same. What works for me might not work for you. For any major issues or questions please contact your doctor or endocrinologist. That being said, you’re free to shoot me questions anytime!

🚨What REALLY Happens When You Ditch Processed Sugar? (Spoiler: It's Kind of Amazing!)
We've all been there, that sugar rush rollercoaster? 🎢 You know the one: the instant high followed by the inevitable energy crash, cravings, and maybe even breakouts or brain fog?
Processed sugar (think: added sugars in candy, soda, baked goods, sauces, refined carbs that act like sugar) is everywhere, and breaking free can feel daunting. But what actually happens to your body when you significantly cut back?
Prepare for some potential positive plot twists:
More Stable Energy Levels (Bye, Crashes! 👋): Without those sharp blood sugar spikes and drops, your energy becomes more consistent throughout the day. Say hello to sustained focus and goodbye to the 3 PM slump.
Reduced Cravings (Eventually!): Initially, cravings might intensify (real talk!), but as your body adjusts, you'll likely find those intense urges for sweets lessen. Your taste buds even start appreciating natural sweetness more! 🍓
Clearer Skin Potential ✨: High sugar intake is linked to inflammation, which can trigger or worsen acne and other skin issues for some people. Cutting back can lead to a calmer, clearer complexion.
More Stable Mood 😊: Those blood sugar swings don't just affect energy; they can impact mood, too! Less dramatic fluctuations often lead to fewer mood swings and less irritability.
Easier Weight Management: Processed sugar provides empty calories and can mess with hormones related to hunger and fat storage (like insulin). Reducing it often naturally helps with weight management efforts.
Better Gut Health 🌱: Excessive sugar feeds less desirable gut bacteria. Reducing it helps create a better environment for beneficial bacteria to thrive, potentially improving digestion.
Potentially Improved Sleep 😴: Those late-night sugar hits or blood sugar crashes can disrupt sleep patterns. Stabilizing blood sugar may contribute to more restful nights.
Reduced Inflammation & Long-Term Health Boost ❤️🩹: Chronic high sugar intake is linked to systemic inflammation and an increased risk of long-term health issues like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Cutting back is a major win for future you!
⚠️Important Note: We're talking about added/processed sugars here, not the natural sugars found in whole fruits, which come packaged with fiber, vitamins, and nutrients! 🍎🍌
Cutting back on processed sugar is a powerful act of self-care with benefits that ripple through your entire well-being. 💪
Have you tried reducing processed sugar? What changes did YOU notice? 👇 Share your experience or tips in the comments, or reblog if this motivates you!
