Title: White Lady, Black Christ
Author: Charlson Ong
Genre/s: mystery, thriller
Content/Trigger Warning/s: police brutality, vigilantism, reenactments of the crucifixion, drug use, depiction of a cult, kidnapping
Summary (from publisher's website): When an explosion occurs in front of Dr. Chester Limhuatco’s condominium, events unfold leading to his discovery of Emily, the “white lady” he has been having visions of. To discover her identity, he enlists the help of former classmate Jefferson Po, a government agent Emily works closely with. Together, Chester and Jefferson pursue the mystery surrounding Emily and her involvement with Tata Peping, a modern day “Itim na Nazareno” or Black Christ.
Set in the midst of Quiapo, the heart of the frenzied devotion and veneration of the statue of the Black Nazarene, White Lady, Black Christ is a high-stakes pursuit of the truth behind a strange brotherhood and the rituals surrounding blind devotion and the search for salvation as told by a masterful storyteller.

Spoiler-Free Review: I'm sad I have to say this, but: this was disappointing. I picked this one up out of curiosity: it was billed as Smaller and Smaller Circles meets Himala, with the summary on the publisher's website implying that it was more along the lines of a thriller than F.H. Batacan's novel, which was very much a mystery novel.
But whatever this was, it definitely wasn't a thriller. It's not that I was expecting pulse-pounding, balls-to-the-wall action, since not all thrillers are built like that and frankly, I need to be in a very specific mood for that sort of thing to be any kind of fun. But I was at least expecting an intriguing plot: something with a cool mystery to untangle at the heart of it. The fact that this book centers around the Black Nazarene and Quiapo implied that the author would be mining the extremely rich vein of Philippine folk Catholicism, with the angle of tackling the many fringe practices and cults that are the byproduct of syncretization between Spanish Catholicism and precolonial beliefs.
Sadly, none of that comes to fruition in this book. First off, the pacing in this book is completely out of whack.  While there’s nothing wrong with going off on occasional tangents to show what’s happening with other characters, there was just way too much of that happening here to make for a tightly-told story.
This pacing is a reflection of the plot, which was just as out of whack as the pacing. I can see what the author was trying to do, but they just didn’t pull it together tightly enough for it to be any kind of fun read. There was a moment, about two-thirds of the way into the book, where there is a big explosion in a cave, and then the next scene cuts to the characters back in their safe spaces, celebrating Christmas. I know these quieter moments are vital and they contribute greatly to character development and plot movement because you can’t always have the action going full speed, but that was VERY badly placed.
The way flashbacks were handled was also poorly done. I think the author was shooting to make each chapter a complete entity unto itself, so he writes each chapter as if telling a short story about the character who’s the current focus of that chapter, but it just doesn’t work when you’re trying to do tension and intrigue in a scene. There were so many of these moments where something tense was happening, only for it to be broken because of a flashback. Of course, this meant the pacing and plot were further hobbled, unable to get any kind of real momentum.
Not that I'm talking of flashbacks, I think I need to talk about characters. For one, I think there were way too many POV characters in this novel - and this is coming from someone who reads fantasy on the reg, where sometimes you need a list of characters at the start of the novel just to keep track of who's who. The problem is that it felt like the author was trying to make EVERYONE a main character, but none of them had "main character energy", so to speak, save fr one or two, but they tended to get lost in the crowd of other characters who, quite frankly, just weren't interesting enough to hold my attention.
Additionally, the characterization also felt weirdly flat in places. I understand that in most cases, thrillers are about plot and not so much character development, but these characters felt like cardboard cutouts trying to sound more profound than they actually are. I think this might be because they’re all trying to be the main character and it’s just not working out. The way dialogue was formatted also didn't help, because there was something about the way it was handled that meant I sometimes didn't know who was talking in any given scene. On top of the fact that most of the characters aren't really THAT fleshed out, it's easy to get lost and wonder "Who the hell is saying this now?"
What I suspect the main problem here is, is that this book was written with the themes in mind first, and everything else built around those themes. Which, when you look at the themes presented in this book, is kind of admirable: the intersections between the wealthy, the powerful, the Church, and corruption in the Philippines; how Catholicism in the Philippines has valorized poverty and suffering instead of trying to uplift those who are poor and suffering; justice as commodity to be bought and sold by the corrupt and powerful, instead of a right guaranteed to all; the deep-seated wounds of colonialism and where that intersects with white privilege and cultural appropriation. These are all amazing ideas. But the book doesn’t let these emerge organically from the story through the characters and the plot; instead, it feels like the characters and the plot were made in service to the themes. Which then explains all the other problems this book has, in my opinion: the characters are reduced to puppets, and the plot reduced to a series of mere lines to be put into their mouths, with things happening TO them instead of BECAUSE OF them.
And again, this is all very disappointing, because I can SEE how this could have been an awesome read, but the execution just wasn't up to snuff. Maybe in the future someone will try this sort of thing again - honestly Philippine folk Catholicism is a VERY rich vein for story material and really should be mined more - and I hope it does the job better than this book. Which, frankly, isn't going to be that hard.

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BLACK NAZARENE (Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno) Feast Day: January 9 The Black Nazarene is the life-size statue of Jesus enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, a famous minor basilica popularly known as the Quiapo Church, located in the Archdiocese of Manila. It is a depiction of Jesus en route to his crucifixion, carrying His cross. It is also among the most popular objects of devotion for Filipino Catholics. The image already survived the blazing fires that destroyed the church twice, two earthquakes, the floods of numerous typhoons and bombings during World War II. The sculptor’s head wears a braided wig made of dyed abaca, along with a golden crown of thorns. Attached to the crown is the traditional 'Tres Potencias' ('three powers') symbolizing the Holy Trinity. These three 'rays' are exclusively used for images of Jesus in traditional Filipino and Hispanic iconography to signify his divinity. The original image is divided into two parts. The original head of the statue is situated at the upper part of the altar of the Quiapo Church. The original body is located at back portion of the Quiapo Church, where it can be visited by devotees. It is also the part being processioned during Traslacion. The division of the original statue is done to preserve the parts, which are roughly 400 years old already. The platform where the image is placed has wheels but do not have motor. It is being pulled by devotees using abaca ropes. The devotees who do this act are called 'mamamasan.' They believe that the thick rope symbolizes the strength and unity of Filipinos despite the challenges in life. The strong devotion of Filipinos to the Black Nazarene of Manila was recognized by Pope Innocent X in 1650. The said pope granted recognition to the Cofradia de Jesus Nazareno, the first confraternity dedicated to Jesus in the Philippines in a Papal Bull in 1651. Some 200 years later, Pope Pius VII gave the image his apostolic blessing, granting anyone who prays to it plenary indulgence, or the removal of all temporal punishment for sins. Saint John Paul II recognized the church as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene because of its role in strengthening a deep popular devotion to Jesus Christ and because of its cultural contribution to the religiosity of the Filipino people.

Returning to Genesis
Personal essay written for Align Magazine
Written by Chloe Strickland
I. Genesis
The first lesson the Christian church taught me was obedience.
Honor thy father and thy mother. Love thy neighbor. Thou shalt not steal. The Lord detests lying lips.
In the beginning you are taught to be good.
I was raised Christian; I was baptized in the Nazarene church that my parents met through and were married in. My childhood was filled with memorizing Bible verses, sitting silently in rows of dusty pews, Sunday school, and prayer circles. I attended a Christian school until the fourth grade, and spent my summers at Vacation Bible School. Every waking moment of my childhood revolved around God.
Among the virtues Christianity teaches, the main one is obedience. To listen, behave, be truthful, be kind, and be good. And I was.
I was an obedient child. I was described as mild and reserved, and although I was quiet and polite like God wanted, it wasn’t out of sheer devotion, but out of fear.
There were countless nights when I was little where I would lay awake and weep not because of the monster that was hiding in my closet, or the fear of the dark, but because of the dread and terror I had about spending eternity in Hell. I would tally everything I did during the day that could be seen as bad or sinful and beg for forgiveness in my nightly prayers.
I would beg God to forgive me for everything. I thought everything I did was going to send me to Hell.
When my family switched to a non-denominational church, the fear didn’t go away.
This church praised enthusiasm, and the ones who showed the most eagerness for being at church were given the invisible badge of loving God the most.
At this point, I had been led to believe that being a good Christian meant to keep my head down and silently follow instruction, but I wasn’t being rewarded for that anymore. Now, I was being judged by how devout I was.
The workings of the world were explained to me as black and white, good or bad. All I knew was that I had to be on the good side, and this ideology was poison to me.
II. Rebirth
III. Reckoning
I was around seventeen when I stopped going to church regularly. The Church had stopped making me feel good. What used to bring me some semblance of comfort now made me feel worse every time I sat through a service.
At this point, my whole belief system was to be seen as and thought of as good. I did everything I could to fit the mold of a good person, but I was always left feeling empty— not good enough.
When the church taught me the fundamentals of being good, they also taught that people are inherently bad, but that we have the choice to be better. Although I hadn’t yet connected this to my religious background, this concept corrupted good and bad for me as a child, and as a teen and young adult, sent me into a spiral of self-hatred and low confidence.
I was no longer crying myself to sleep out of fear of going to Hell, but rather I was staring at the ceiling for hours contemplating my morality. I didn’t know how to be a good person when I was taught that I was innately bad.
I didn’t start contemplating my religious identity until I entered my twenties and was beginning to figure out who I was. This was where I struggled the most, actually. I had separated myself from Christianity and was trying to find solace in myself, but I only felt adulterated without religion as a foundation.
This inherent evil was looming over me and there was no way to cleave it from myself; I was stuck with it. It was this thought process that sent me into a spiral of unhealthy coping skills and depleting mental health.
This period of time forced me to rebuild. The structure that had been assembled for me to be a good person crumbled, and I had to dig myself out of the rubble.
Writing and literature were comforting to me at this time. I put my pondering thoughts to paper and allowed myself to question everything, even if it felt sinful in and of itself. I sought a lot of comfort in Transcendentalism and delved into mythologies from many cultures which taught me different ideologies of selfdiscovery and transformation.
Only after I gave myself the freedom to explore did I connect my childhood in the church to my conflicting identity. I started unraveling what I had been taught and how it polluted my perspective of myself. I didn’t realize how it subconsciously stayed with me or how my whole character had been twisted and molded to fit into it.
Once I identified the origin of my insecurities, I was able to correct my course, although it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Even today I still struggle with the idea of if I’m a good person or not.
My whole childhood was built on the premise of being a good person. I was given the Bible, told to follow its rules, and when I broke them, confess my sins and ask for forgiveness.
My upbringing in the church gave me a lot of good things. It built my moral code and gave me good values to take with me in life, but it also built the foundation of a belief system that would become detrimental to my personal growth.
I don’t dwell on my religious trauma or the things in Christianity that I disagree with, rather I focus on my personal healing and growing away from the skewed perception of the world I was taught. I still believe in divinity and a higher power, but I believe a person could be good without it.
My experience with religion brought me more fear than peace. I strived for goodness out of fear that badness would damn me eternally, but really I was damned from the start. Until I severed myself from that fear, I found that you aren’t a good person just because you tell the truth, because you follow instructions, or because you’re not a thief.
What makes you a good person is yourself.

The Brothers Eberhard, Johann Anton Ramboux, 1822, Cleveland Museum of Art: Prints
In 1822, Johann Anton Ramboux accompanied the Eberhard brothers to Munich, where he executed this double portrait lithograph. Because he intended the print to be a gift to the sitters, only a small number of impressions were produced. This exceedingly rare work is an exquisite example of early German lithography, a technique which had only been invented in 1798. Ramboux, who had been a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David (1748-1825), lived in Rome between 1816 and 1822. There he befriended a group of German artists who had formed the Brotherhood of St. Luke (also called the Nazarenes). They inhabited a deserted monastery and lived a life of study and Christian devotion. Their art strove to restore the pious purity of early 16th-century Italian and German painting, emulating the strong draftsmanship of Raphael (1483-1520) and Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Such an emphasis on skillful drawing is evident in this lithograph: Ramboux beautifully modeled the two heads in light and shade. Size: Sheet: 32.1 x 34.7 cm (12 5/8 x 13 11/16 in.); Image: 31.7 x 34.2 cm (12 1/2 x 13 7/16 in.) Medium: lithograph printed in black and gray

Traslacion or the Procession of the Feast Day of the Black Nazarene 2020: Quezon Boulevard
I’ve been shooting the Translacion or the Procession of the Feast Day of the Black Nazarene for 3 times already. Yesterday was my 4th yet I still felt the same thing when I first saw the image of the Black Nazarene and its devotees flocking their way towards it. It still amazes me as to how far they will go for their devotion.
I usually position myself at Jones Bridge. But since the route changed this year, I found two spots that are best for me: Ayala Bridge and Quezon Bridge. So in the next few days, I’ll be sharing photos from these locations. The photos above were all taken from Quezon Bridge, which allowed me to have a high vantage point. It was intense to see everything from above. Viva!

Satanic Induction Ritual
If you know where this comes from, please tell me so I can add it on the post! I wasn’t able to find the OG.
Here before you is - in truth - the first Ritual step of the Classical Satanic Witch undertaking the journey upon the dark path of the Infernal  -I-  the ceremonial active step to give the self mind, body and soul to the Infernal Lord, the Devil  -I-
Upon the Altar in addition to the usual implements should be an Infernal pendant of the Neophyte’s choosing (bearing a symbol sacred to Satan, ideally the Inverted Cross or Pentagram), the Black Robe of the Initiate, the Infernal Oath written on parchment and parchment bearing symbols of the religions of the light -I-   there should also be an additional red candle to represent the Initiate  -I- following the Conjuring Of  The Dominion Of Shadows the  Infernal Neophyte shall stand before the Altar naked and begin the dedication of the self into the Creed of Satanic Witchcraft by reciting the opening lines as follows:
“This night before the Sacred Black Altar of the Devil, Our Lord Satan  -I-   I stand prepared to give myself physically, mentally and Spiritually into the true Fraternity of Hell  -I-  to become a Satanic Witch of the Ancient Path of the Unholy  -I-   and Infernal Initiate of the Dark Mysteries of the Black Arts  -I-  my mind is open to the power and wisdom of Hell  -I-  my flesh given to the service of the One True Lord Satan and the Infernal Queen Lilith … my Soul darkened and imbued with desire to become at one with the Demonic Beings of the Kingdom of Shadows  -I-  from which I gestated by the Seed of the Infernal Father and the Black Womb of Lilith!”
The Neophyte now lights the red Initiatory Candle upon the Altar and continues:
“I ignite this flame as the Black Flame of Our Lord Satan has become ignited within me  -I-  its flame reflects the mind which seeks the dark illumination of the Inferna  -I-   its heat mirrors the desire which traverses the core of my being to know of the Dark Arts of Black Magick and of the pain and pleasure which is found in the Unholy Grail’s Mysteries  -I-  it symbolises the night of Infernal Rebirth into the Abyss of my true Father’s Kingdom  -I-  the Kingdom of Shadows  -I-  the genesis of my journey through the Gates of Hell  -I-  the birth of the isolate self free from the shackles of the inane and the mundane creed of the false Fathers!“
The Neophyte shall now take up the parchment from the Altar which is inscribed with the symbols of repression, the cross of the Nazarene, the pallid Star of David and other symbols of the power of the false light and continues:
“These are the symbols of living death  -I-  the symbols of banal oppression of the primal laws  -I-  the symbolic shackles which bind the living creature from its true nature and raw primal power  -I-  the symbols of imprisonment and tyranny  -I-  of orthodoxy and stagnation … I renounce each and every one of them, banish their influence from my mind, their manacles from my Soul  -I-  I refute the heavenly Father Yahweh and His Angelic Horde  -I-  I rebuke the foul teachings of the pale Nazarene  -I-  vanquish the Father of Misogyny Allah  -I- deny the laws of the Kingdoms of the Light which blinds and binds the essence of spirit and the pleasures of the flesh!”
Let the Neophyte now light the parchment and let it start to burn before dropping it into an Altar bowl, as they watch the pale symbols of stagnation succumb to the flames they shall then say:
“My life journey as ended as it was and is to be reborn this night  -I-  may the sojourn I now undertake into the Kingdom of Hell burn like the fires of the Infernal and reduce the impotent faiths of the of the false Gods to ashes!“
The Neophyte shall now Meditate on the absolute division of the self from the tendrils of light, Meditate upon the opening of the inner self  -I-  the inner mind to the encroaching forces of Hell and ever opening Doorway into the Abyss  -I- when ready the Neophyte takes up the Infernal Oath and says:
“Hear now my Vow Grand Devil of the Kingdom of Shadows  -I-  hear now My Father Satan the words of my Oath  -I-  know that they shall be spoken with truth, desire and conviction  -I-  with the fervent alliance of the Black Acolyte and Satanic Witch that I seek to become!”
The Initiate will now kneel before the Altar and pause briefly  -I-  preparing themselves mentally  -I- absorbing the importance of the Oath they are about to take and its meaning on their destiny before reciting The Infernal Oath aloud:
“I (Birth Name) arrive before the Black Altar of Our Lord Satan and Our Lady Lilith this night reborn  -I-  the death of my former self where any weakness of influence from the pale Gods remained is undertaken  -I-  fulfilled and celebrated I am reborn from the ashes of my own passing  -I-  reborn isolate  -I-  I rise as the Lilin of the Black Womb rose  -I-  divided from the masses of the pallid Herd of the Sheep Gatherer, the Nazarene  -I-  born into the Black Kindred of the Infernal Brethren  -I-  arisen as the Satanic Witch of the Ancient Lineage and emerging from the pale waters of stagnation as the Black Apostle of Hell, an Initiate of the Satanic Arts and Mysteries  -I-  as a devoted Son/Daughter of the one true Lord Satan, the Devil, the King of Hell  -I-  I shed all shackles of false morality, fear and weakness  -I-  doubt is banished  -I-  I uphold the Tenets of lust, wrath, desire, strength, will and the eternal quest for knowledge and experience  -I-  I Vow to gain knowledge of the Infernal Arts of Black Magick and utilize them to exalt my own existence and further the Great Work of  the Demonic Legion  -I-  I decree that I shall gestate within me the Black Flame and set free the Dark Soul which resides within forged by the hands of the Demons of Hell  -I-  that the pleasures of the flesh, the gifts of the Earth, the knowledge of the Satanic Mysteries and ascension to Infernal Adepthood shall be my objectives and shall be embraced without reservation  -I-  that I shall remain a dedicated Disciple and true Satanic Explorer of the Black Arts always  -I-  this night I Vow upon the essence of my life and those lives which are yet to manifest that I am of the Infernal Mortal Kindred  -I-  a true Son/Daughter of Our Lord Satan and Our Lady Lilith  -I-  Brother/Sister in allegiance to the Infernal Legion of Hell  -I-  and devoted Initiate of the Satanic Kindred  -I-  I take this night the Infernal Name (Satanic Witch Name) and pledge my allegiance to Our Lord the Devil, the Dark Queen Lilith  -I-  and the Grand Demons of Hell  -I-  may the Gates of Hell be open to me and the Key of entrance bestowed by Agaliarept my trusted to my hand  -I-  that within life and death I may stand before the Black Throne of the Father of Hell  -I-  and receive His Mark and the Blessing of His Eternal Darkness  -I-  may the flame that guides me now burn the flesh from my being should I betray this Oath or those who are true Brothers and Sisters to me within the Unholy Kindred  -I-  Manifestum In Nominie Diabolus!”
The Initiate will now rise to a standing position again and sign the Infernal Oath with their Birth Name and Satanic Name and then takes a blade and cut open their flesh  -I-  let the blood be allowed to fall onto the Oath  before issuing the following:
“By the blood of my lifeline and the essence of my Soul do I consecrate this Oath and forever bind myself to Satan and His ineffable Hierarchy within Hell!”
The new Initiate now dons the Black Ritual Vestment and takes the pendant from the Altar and places it around their neck -I-  they meditate for a while on the transition which has take place before reciting:
“I stand reborn before the Altar of the My Infernal Father, bearing the Name (Satanic Witch Name)  -I-  from this night forth my destiny shall take me beyond the Gates of Hell and I shall walk this Earth and the planes beyond it as the Satanic Acolyte of the Arts of Black Magick … as a Devotee of the Infernal Legion and Kin to the mortal Fraternity of Hell here in this World of which Our Lord the Devil is True Master  -I-  Manifestum In Nomine Diabolus!”
The Initiate shall now reside for a while in silent meditation on that which has passed before ending the Working by Departing The Dominion Of Shadows  -I- The red candle is left to burn and is afterwards placed in a small wooden box or black pouch along with the Infernal Oath, this is kept by the Initiate and should be buried with them at death.

SECRETS OF THE SATANIC TEMPLE ~ Part One
TEXT 6: THE TAPESTRY OF SATANIC BLACK MAGICK
A question I am often asked is ‘what are the main powers and energies behind the Workings of Satanic Magick?’ … the answer to such a question cannot be given in a brief sentence to any satisfaction. In short the main powers behind Satanic Black Magick are the power of Word, the power of Imitative Magick, deep faith in the force of Satan and His Demons, Carnal and Primal currents and the ineffable power of Inversion. These are of cause the working powers behind Black Magick in a practical sense but the true Power lies with Satan and the Demons of Hell themselves, for it is their Power we are summoning through the above practical techniques. The Primal and Carnal energies behind the Workings of Black Magick are physical and emotive currents such as sexual rapture, blood letting, the raising of emotional powers such as rage, lust and desire … and of cause the forces of creation themselves. As said however Inversion is also a powerful tool along with its kindred elements such as reversal, blasphemy, deviation and adversity, and so the merging of Inversion with these primal and carnal currents is of even greater power. Therefore sexual acts which cannot lead to procreation are an adverse action and one blasphemous to God, therefore oral and anal sex are sacrosanct acts in the eyes of the Demonic. The Arts of Fetishism and the merging of pleasure and pain are also adverse sexual acts in the eyes Name of God for they are obtaining sexual rapture and mental stimulus through actions which not only please the Demons themselves but offer no gain to the Nazarene’s order to “Go forth and multiply” sexual pleasure and climax from deviant methods of sexual practice are powerful tools in the Black Arts. Of cause blood has always held a powerful role in Ritual Magick and Black Magick Rites be it through the devotional spilling of the Initiate’s blood in offering to the Dark Ones or the act of Blood Sacrifice to the Infernal Lords of Hell. Voluntary Blood Sacrifice (as in that promoted by Order Of The Nine Angles) is a power Ritual action which encompasses both of the above intentions, involuntary Blood Sacrifice releases even greater power as the fear, pain and death laced with terror from the victim releases a potent merging of Dark Negative and Primal Creative energy. The power of Word is another important aspect of Dark Satanic Rites, few things in life carry more sustaining energy than words, they are at the core of life on all levels. Be it the emotive Poem, the inspirational Speech, the mystical Incantation, the Powerful Conjuration, the brutal insult or the loving statement words penetrate deep within the subconscious and activate forces within that strange realm. The verbal injury shall be remembered long after the thrown fist in anger, the declaration of love long after the rose has shriveled. The powerfully written Evocation, Invocation, Incantation or Curse vibrates through the veils activating responses on all realms and words should always be carefully selected when being applied to the Magickal Text - they root themselves in the realms they are designated to take effect. The power of Names is also an extension of this Magickal Current and the Names of Spirits contain the very core of their Power … we have all seen the warnings not to speak a Demon’s Name or the secret Names of God aloud. These are not the idle warnings of the nervous, the very whispering of the Name of a Demon vibrates on the spheres of Hell, to speak the Demon’s Name is to draw the Demon’s attention and energy toward you. Imitative/Sympathetic Magick is another powerful tool in the armoury of the Satanist, the use of this kind of power raising dates back thousands of years and can be found in the oldest form of Magickal Workings and beliefs in Animism. The binding of an object to the person one is Working Magick upon and then the inflicting of whatever is intended for that person upon that object is one of the most primordial forms of Magickal practice and one which carries immense power. There lies connections between all things and many things (be they physical, emotive or other) have rich symbolism connected with them … the Black Magician harnesses these symbols and these connections in league with the aforementioned strands of Arcane power to form a tapestry of ineffable Magickal energy. Some of the most obviously recognized of these Imitative Practices are of cause the use of effigies in Ritual (wax, clay or material figures) to represent the intended recipient of the Magickal energy often with a charged connection by the inclusion of hair, nails, blood, handwriting or photographs of the Magickal human object to encourage and sustain the link between them. At the beginning of this Text faith was also mentioned as one of the strands of the Black Magick tapestry and this is of great importance … if you have no faith or belief in the Entities you are Conjuring then already the practice being performed is damaged severely. It is hard in an age of cold scientific fact to believe with the faith people used to have - but know that Satan IS REAL, the Demons ARE REAL … the fact that Science cannot prove their existence yet is no reflection on the reality of Demonic beings but a statement on the immeasurable length of which Science has yet to progress. Before Science and invention gave us Telescopes and Microscopes certain planets, atoms or diseases could not be detected, this does not mean that these very real things did not exist before they could be seen … the Scientist believes only in what can be seen or quantified which is a flawed perspective that would have resulted in no discovery ever being made if it has been adhered to from the start. In closing this Text I should mention one more important element which ties all of the strands of the Magickal tapestry together and that is the energy of desire, without this all Magick is doomed to fail. Performing a Rite to kill someone in anger if you do not really want them dead will fail . . .  love Magick to bring someone to love you will not work if you do not really love them from the core of your soul. The Dark Occultist must truly desire the end result of their Infernal Working if they are to see that result manifest before them … lack of sincerity, depth, feeling, true desire and intention are the harbingers of almost all failed Magickal Workings. ©Barnabas 2018

The Philippines has been colonized by the Spaniards for 333 years (from 1565 to 1898), thus, the wide and ever lasting influence of Catholicism in the country, up to this day. In fact, as per pilipinas.org, Philippines has the third largest Catholic population in the world. Roughly, there are about 81 million Catholics in the Philippines.

Filipino's are very much religious indeed - speaking from a perspective of a Filipino Catholic. Being a Catholic is literally a part of our daily lives - in a way that we can't start the day in school without a prayer, heck, not even a meal if I may say; which I think is just right, we ought to thank God for everything before even starting our day and ask for his guidance. You see, my first statement proves right as I can't even stop glorifying our Dear God as I try to think of what to write on this blog :)
Typical Filipinos Catholics are avid devotees of Sto Nino, Black Nazarene, Mother Mary and etc. Some are very fond of collecting wooden statues of Sto Nino and images of Jesus Christ and Mama Mary. My mom is a devotee of Sto Nino, I always see her posting stuff about it. She even asked a prayer for my healing when I was suspected of having Covid-19, anyways, I got well, thanks to her sincere prayers for me and of course, the medicines that I took :) Joking aside, I think this shows the significance of our religion and faith to our lives - it helps us in ways that we'd be encouraged to be better or get well and it shows a language of love by asking for a simple prayer.

We also have feasts like 'Mahal na araw' where devotees are doing penitence; this is done during Good Friday, usually at the noon as it is the hottest time of the day. I remember my younger days when my grandparents were still alive, they used to bring me, my siblings and my cousins to watch the ritual. I don't remember what I felt back then as a child - watching people hurt themselves but I definitely have a different perspective on it now as an adult. Anyways, to continue, the devotees hit themselves with ropes, some carries a big wooden cross; from which I know, is a re-enactment of the suffering of Christ and as a way to repent for their sins. I hope this does not offend anyone, but I honestly think that there is no need to re-enact the suffering of our Dear Lord - his sacrifice was already made and he did it out of Love, and so, we should just be thankful and always appreciate it in any ways that we can. Disclaimer: we are entitled to our own beliefs, so each to their own, we must respect each other's choices on how we'd show our devotion.

"Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own," - 1 Corinthians 6:19
Did you know that Filipinos have the longest celebration of Christmas? Once ber months starts (September), we consider it as the start of the Christmas holidays already, we take out our Christmas trees and decorate our house with colorful and shiny decorations, and who could forget about hanging the beautiful "Parol" as well. We also have the yearly tradition of "Simbang Gabi" or Misa de Gallo which is a nine-days series of Masses leading up to Christmas. It is said that once you are able to complete or attend all the Masses, you can make a wish and God will grant it. I remember attending these masses when I was younger and had the time to do so. It was always fun and it brings out the cozy mood of Christmas. It also shows the unity of Filipino people in a way that they will lend their time and get up for it as early as 4:00 in the morning, so that the tradition of Glorifying the birth of our Lord would not die as time passes by.
Tumblr media
I hope my short stories show how Filipinos are so inclined with religiosity that in almost every culture, tradition and daily practices that we have has a connection with our Catholicism. Our lives would be incomplete without the touch of our Lord in everything that we do, and so, who we are as Filipinos are always connected to who we believe in - our One Holy and Mighty God.
