Alaska Governor DILFs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bill Walker, Bill Sheffield, William A. Egan, Wally Hickel, Frank Murkowski, Jay Hammond, Sean Parnell, Mike Dunleavy, Tony Knowles, Steve Cowper. So basically every governor of Alaska was a DILF except for Palin. Honestly, Sean Parnell deserves a medal for putting up with Palin's big bag of crazy as Lt. Gov.

I Wouldn't Be in Your Shoes
Tumblr media
William Nigh opens his film noir I WOULDN’T BE IN YOUR SHOES (1948, TCM) with an impressive long shot of convicts waiting for their cell doors to open. Then Mark Stengler’s camera starts low on one death row cell before panning up to reveal a handsome young man and gliding on to introduce the other prisoners, all character types. They stand at the bars staring out in desperation and even hope. It’s a very powerful opening. Then the camera returns to the young man (Don Castle) as the prisoners, in a near-poetic use of repetition thanks to writer Steve Fisher, ask him to explain how he got there. And then Castle delivers the kind of performance you give when you’re waiting for your rich best friend to take you away from all this and give you a job in one of his many businesses, which, mercifully for all, is exactly what happened. He tends to play attitudes rather than objectives. It’s all posing and staring. His leading lady, Elyse Knox, isn’t much better, tending toward the singsong in her more dramatic moments. She, by the way, would retire after marrying football great Tom Harmon and raise much more talented children and grandchildren.
That neither of them can sink the film is a credit to Nigh’s direction and Stengler’s impressive camerawork as well as a whacky Cornell Woolrich adaptation with an overall sense of doom. Castle is an unemployed dancer who throws his tap shoes at some yowling cats outside his window. The next morning, the shoes turn up outside his apartment door. But their prints are also outside the hovel of a wealthy old man (the news report identifies him as a “miser”) who was strangled that night. When Castle finds a wallet filled with older 20-dollar bills, the police trace them and the shoes back to him, and before you can say “ineffective counsel,” he’s on death row. To save him, Knox enlists the help of a police detective (Regis Toomey) who just happens to have fallen in love with her after they met at the dancing school where she teaches. Nigh keeps the pace going so well you may not have time to consider all the plot holes, and the final twist is immensely satisfying.
Tumblr media
Toomey is one of the film’s chief assets. His love-smitten flatfoot may be the most complex of the many police officers he played during his career, and he carries it off with impressive subtlety. He even reacts to Knox as if she were one of his better leading ladies, say Barbara Stanwyck or Loretta Young. There are a lot of good character people in the film as well, my favorite being Dorothy Vaughan as a testy neighbor who might hold the key to saving Castle. Of course, the supporting players tend to show up the leads. At one point, one of the death row inmates asks Castle how much time he has left. He responds as if he had been asked how long until his dry cleaning was done. Castle returns the question, and the convict (Bill Walker) invests just two words with a lifetime of suffering. When you see a scene like that, you know someone should be looking for another line of work. And in keeping with my dabbling in future vision, Walker had a long career with almost 200 film and TV credits, including the role of Rev. Sykes in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962).

Semi decent movie. The baby and the dog were DEFINITELY the best things about it. And I STILL think that it was all the moronic parents fault. But still. Semi decent movie

Yours and Tom’s relationship was anything but perfect, you both were constantly arguing with one another over the smallest things, but you both refused to break up. Tom was currently driving back from a long concert, it was raining heavily outside and it did little to calm the tension in the car, in fact it made things worse.
His eyes were locked on the road as I screamed at him for kissing another girl backstage. “ If you’re fucking cheating on me tell me that so I don’t look stupid ?! ”
Tom’s eyes remained locked on the road as his foot pressed further down on the accelerator. One of his hands reached for the dial on the radio turning the volume full blast completely drowning you out. He didn’t even acknowledge your presence until you turned the radio off. His cold gaze flickered over to you as you kept asking if he was cheating.
“ Maybe stop being so fucking paranoid! I don’t want to deal with this shit right now, ” his thick german accent made his words sound even harsher before he once again drowned out the conversation with the loud music once more.
You didn’t know why but for some reason it hurt more the fact he wouldn’t just say no and disprove what people were saying. You sunk down in the passenger seat for a moment just trapping yourself in your own bubble. The only reason you became aware of your surroundings once more was because you realized how fast Tom was driving.
His eyes remained fixated on the road, meanwhile you were trying to grasp his attention over the loud music. The hum of the engine paired with the blaring music made any attempts at conversation with Tom impossible.
Your hand reached out to turn off the music and immediately his hand shot out grabbing your wrist with a force that was alien to you. He had never been violent before, but now his hand was gripping your wrist with a bruising force over something small like turning off the radio. His eyes left the road, his gaze full of anger as he stared at you down. For a moment it’s as if he forgot he was driving and the car swerves slightly before he regains control. His grip on your wrist never loosened even as his eyes focused back on the road. When you attempted to pull away his grip tightened once more. His nails dug into your delicate skin leaving small crescent shapes behind once he released your wrist.
Tom’s hands moved back to grip the wheel, his knuckles turning white from the force.
“ Tom, slow down, ” I shouted at him trying desperately to be heard over the music.
Ignoring your pleas to slow down he pushes down harder on the accelerator, the car responds by surging forward at an alarming rate. The trees and street lights on the mostly empty road all blurred into a streak of light and colors as the car raced down the slick pavement. You screamed at him to stop and let you out of the car. Tom completely ignored you, letting the loud music drown you out.
With a sudden and violent jerk of the wheel, Tom takes the next turn at an extreme angle. Without warning the car hydroplaned, it whipped across the empty road before slamming into the barriers that lined the road before they gave way at the force of the car. The car flew into the water that laid below the road.
Your head had slammed against the passenger side window at the sudden impact, as Tom’s head slammed forward into the steering wheel. When you both came to, the car was already filling with water. Panic filled your bodies as you desperately tried to pull off your seatbelts. Tom managed to escape the restraint of his before he began yanking and pulling at yours desperate to free you. The attempt was futile as he couldn’t get you free. Tears were flowing freely from your eyes as you realized there was no possible way you were getting free. You reached out to grasp Tom's face with your trembling hands before placing a gentle kiss to his lips.
“ Tom- please just go, ” he couldn’t even fathom the idea of leaving you to die alone in his car. He couldn’t fathom the idea because the whole thing was his fault.
You begged him to let you out of the car, to slow down, and just stop completely and he just ignored you. Tears were beginning to well in his eyes, clouding his vision completely as he yanked at the seat belt. He knew he wasn’t getting you free as he realized the car was now completely submerged under the water.
“ I- I’m so sorry, ” he was aware his apologies wouldn’t save you, but he couldn’t believe you were going to die because of his arrogance.
His shaking hands moved up to cup your face as he pressed his lips to yours. He did this after every argument you had to solidify his love for you, so you knew his anger was only a fleeting emotion.
“ I would never cheat on you angel, ” his words were meaningful as he stared into your eyes when he spoke to them.
“ I- I know. I’m so- so sorry, ” my words were completely broken by sobs as I clung to him.
You both ignored the water that was slowly filling the car as you both freely cried in one another's arms. You had never thought that this was how your relationship would end with Tom. Your lips pressed against his in a final kiss as the water encased the car completely. You both died clutching onto one another as you drowned in the car.
(Bonus (Happy Ending)
The tires squealed in protest before the car flipped over, the sound of metal screeching across the pavement pierced the air until the car came to a halt when it slammed into a metal barrier on the side of the road. The airbags deployed as soon as the car hit the ground. They released with a deafening crash as Tom’s head slammed back against the headrest and yours slammed into the passenger side window.
Both your heads were reeling as you slowly came to. The world was spinning for both of you as you both were suspended by your seatbelts. You could hear Tom calling your name but his voice sounded distant and muffled.
“ Hey- Hey can you hear me? ” His words were filled with an underlying panic as he tried to push the airbags away from your faces. He managed to push the airbag down enough to see your face, there was a gash just above your eyebrow trickling blood down your forehead until the blood disappeared into your hairline.
Tom registered the severity of the situation as he began trying to come up with an idea to get out of the car. Without a second thought he unbuckled his seatbelt letting his body drop against the roof of the car. A soft groan fell from his lips as he rubbed his temples. He grabbed your face with gentle hands as he forced you to look at him. Your eyes were barely opened as you tried to focus on Tom's face.
“ Put your hands on the roof. ”
His words were clear and fluent when they left his lips but were completely jumbled when they reached your ears. His grasp on your wrists were gentle as he moved your arms above your head helping you brace yourself. He unbuckled your seatbelt helping you catch yourself before you dropped to the roof. He sat you up brushing your hair from your face as he looked into your eyes. He could see you were still in shock as he held your face in his hand. He pulled away from you before trying to open the car door, the door wouldn’t budge as he kicked at it with sneakers. He huffed before he pulled off his zip-up hoodie before passing it to you.
“ Cover your face with this, okay? ”
You only nodded in response before bringing the hoodie over your face as he kicked out the already shattered windshield. Tom had little concern for his safety as bashed through the glass. Once he made a hole big enough he turned back to you. He took his hoodie from you pulling it over you. He brought the hoodie over your head before helping you out through the hole. Once you were out of the car the groaning of the vehicle had become evident now that he wasn’t worrying for you. Without a second thought Tom crawled through the broken windshield.
He crawled over to you laying next to you on the wet pavement as you both caught your breaths. Tom’s body was covered in fresh cuts from the glass, his hands having tiny shards sticking out of them. You both sat together trying to collect yourselves until your thoughts were interrupted by the wailing sirens in the distance. You had no clue who had called 911 as you sat together. Before you knew it you were both sitting in the back of an ambulance together wrapped in blankets as EMT’s tended to your wounds. Tom’s hand found yours as it was wrapped in bandages, he squeezed your hand gently before murmuring a soft apology.
“ I’m so sorry,” those were the only words that he could say to you as he squeezed your hand. You didn’t say anything back but your head slowly found its resting place on his shoulder as you squeezed his hand back.

A gay “kiss-in” demonstration Yonge and Bloor streets, Toronto, 17 July 1976

On February 9, 1976, gay activists Tom Field and Bill Holloway were arrested at the corner of Yonge and Bloor streets in Toronto for kissing in public. They were charged with obstructing the sidewalk and committing an indecent act. Ironically, the men had been posing for photographs for an article on homophobia to be published in the now-defunct newspaper Alternative to Alienation. …
Field and Holloway were found guilty of committing an indecent act by Judge Charles Drukarsh on July 13, 1976, and were each fined $50. The ruling infuriated Gay Alliance Toward Equality [GATE], the Body Politic, and members of the community. The need for protest was in the air, but only a very special kind of protest would do.
A few days later, on July 17, GATE and the Body Politic sponsored a kiss-in to support the right for gay people to publicly show affection. About twenty people paraded in same-sex couples at Yonge and Bloor streets, kissing as they walked. Policemen watched from the sidelines, but did not intervene. The protesters had made their point. — Donald W. McLeod
