Casa de Mouraz Dão Branco Dão, Portugal 2022 Malvasia-Fina, Encruzado, Bical
A distinctive dry, natural white made from over 20 local grape varieties. These grapes grow in sandy granitic soils and enjoy an unique microclimate between two mountain ranges.
Dão Branco spends eight months on its lees with batonnage in stainless steel tanks which creates a creamy, full bodied texture. A crisp green-fruited start with a satisfying finish.
Deliciously textured, aromatic and moreish. High acidity, no oak, a light, mouthwatering alternative to Chardonnay.
Tasting notes: green apple, apricot, lemon
Pairing: baked fish, pesto pasta, pork, cheeses
Similar to: Chardonnay

Wines of Portugal After attending the Portuguese Wine Experience Masterclass earlier in the day, there was also a tasting room set up with wines from various Portuguese wineries to try.  Below are the wines that I enjoyed the most.  The names of the grapes are not well-known as they are indigenous to Portugal.  So no Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are listed below, rather you will see names like Baga,…

Wasp
Introduced in 2464 as an attempt by General Mechanics to create a fast and maneuverable recon BattleMech for the Terran Hegemony, the Wasp was revolutionary for being the first 'Mech capable of jumping, sporting a prototype jump jet system; however, the system was not perfected for most of the next decade. After improvements in production and jump jet technology progressed, the modern WSP-1A Wasp began production in 2471. Centuries later, it is still considered a valued asset for recon work and is one of the most numerous 'Mechs in existence.
The initial design was built without monomolecular stress-resistant materials (MMSR) in the lower leg actuators. This wasn't identified as a flaw until the 2580 Battle of Imbros III when many Wasp MechWarriors practiced the jump-kick maneuver. After performing the maneuver even once, so much stress was put on the actuator that any subsequent jump-kicks immediately amputated the lower leg upon impact. By 2610 nearly all Wasps had been retrofitted with MMSR actuator bars.
The classic WSP-1A has a ground speed that could be considered lackluster when compared to many modern light 'Mechs, but this was offset by its jump capability. While carrying heavier weapons than 'Mechs like the Locust, the Wasp would generally only engage other light 'Mechs, using its jump capabilities to avoid conflicts with larger foes. The Wasp was also used in the role of raider because of its ability to hit and fade in rough terrain.
Even after the sheer destruction of the Succession Wars, the Wasp still remained the most numerous 'Mech ahead of the Locust and Stinger; many thousands were in use by all of the Great Houses and in the Periphery while 100 or more were built each year from factories across known space. Nearly half of all newly built Wasps came from IBMU's and Kali Yama's factories located in the Free Worlds League on Shiro III and Kalidasa respectively. Among other major Inner Sphere Wasp manufacturing sites were Defiance Industries' Furillo factory in the Lyran Commonwealth and Achernar BattleMechs on New Avalon in the Federated Suns. Many of the Great Houses had Wasp variants built specifically for them, as did Wolf's Dragoons. Even out in the Periphery the Wasp was manufactured on Taurus, Perdition, Canopus IV and Alpheratz, making it equally common among the Periphery States.
The WSP-1A Wasp was not designed as a line combat unit. It carries a light weapons payload meant primarily for self-defense against other light 'Mechs and was not meant to engage heavier 'Mechs, resulting in tactics such as the jump-kick in order to deal more damage. The primary weapon is a Diverse Optics Type 2 medium laser carried in the right arm, backed up by a Bical SRM-2 launcher that is curiously mounted in the left leg which can carry one ton of standard or Inferno rounds in the left torso, making it useful against enemy 'Mechs and a good deterrent against infantry and vehicles. Published schematics indicate that the leg-mounted SRM-2 launcher is located near the hip.
The six jump jets, split between the Wasp's legs and torso sections, are responsible for its jumping distance of 180 meters and its longevity as a recon 'Mech. These also make up for the relatively slow 66.5 km/h cruising speed produced by its four-ton fusion engine. 10 single heat sinks are more than enough for the Wasp - it can actually fire both of its weapon systems continuously with little to no issue unless the jump jets have been overused. The three tons of armor protection is average for light 'Mechs, and with its placement around the chassis essentially two shots to the same spot anywhere will punch through and cause damage.

Delphine Seyrig in Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels (Chantal Akerman, 1975)
Cast: Delphine Seyrig, Jan Decorte, Henri Storck, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, Yves Bical. Screenplay: Chantal Akerman. Cinematography: Babette Mangolte. Art direction: Philippe Graff. Film editing: Patricia Canino.
With Jeanne Dielman (to shorten its unwieldy title) Chantal Akerman tests the medium to see whether a story can be told without melodrama, without excess camera movement, without a music track, without all the usual cinematic techniques. She also tests the audience, to see if they will sit through a 201-minute film in which minutes go by without anything happening other than a woman taking a bath, washing the bathtub, preparing dinner, eating it with her son, washing dishes, and so on -- all in long takes with no apparent forward narrative drive. The answer is yes, a story can be told that way. As for the audience, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a high tolerance for cinematic riddles, or who can't sit raptly looking at a painting in a museum for minutes on end. Most of the scenes are filmed straight on, as if looking at them through a frame. In short, Akerman treats a kinetic medium, motion pictures, as if it were a static medium like painting. Is it the greatest film of all time, as has been claimed? I think it's at least a great film, but I don't have any urgent desire to see it again soon. What it did to me was make me aware of watching, of patiently waiting to see what image would be presented to me next, what piece of the puzzle that is Jeanne Dielman (Delphine Seyrig) would fall into place. It takes place over the course of three days, on the first of which Jeanne presents herself as a supremely capable and precise person, going through the motions of her daily existence (which include receiving a man into her bedroom, because she makes a living for herself and her son by discreet prostitution) with calm efficiency. On the first two days, we don't follow her into the bedroom with her client, but the camera lingers in the hall, looking at the bedroom door, until the light fades enough to indicate a passage of time, whereupon she and the man emerge from the bedroom and go to her apartment door, where he pays her and indicates that he will see her again in a week. She then goes to her dining room and puts the money in a blue-and-white tureen, whose lid makes a satisfying clink when she covers it. (In the absence of a music track, ambient sounds take on a greater role.) Later, her son, Sylvain (Jan Decorte), comes home from school and they have dinner, listen to the radio, go out for a walk, and come back home to rearrange the living room furniture so he can unfold the sofa for his bed. They go to sleep. But because many of these incidents are presented in real time, we are allowed to examine them in detail, to notice the furnishings of the apartment and the lack of affect of both mother and son, who have settled into a routine. We also notice the way a blue light, apparently from a sign outside their apartment, bounces off the surfaces of the furniture: It flashes and flickers in a way that suggests a rhythmic repetition but never quite resolves itself into a pattern. In that regard it's unlike Jeanne and Sylvain, who clearly have a pattern to their lives. And that's why it's a shock on the second day -- which begins about an hour into the film -- when Jeanne fails to do up a button on her housedress, something that Sylvain brings to her notice. Or later, when other elements of the pattern of her life don't fall in place: She burns the potatoes she is preparing for dinner; she forgets to switch off a light when she moves from room to room; she fails to put the cover on the tureen after putting the money from the second day's client into it. In any other context than the one established by the first day depicted in the film, these details would be insignificant. But Akerman makes them significant, even troubling, by having made us aware of the cold precision of Jeanne's routine. That this eventually builds to a remarkable climax (I use the word advisedly but not facetiously) is made possible by the mastery with which Akerman has set up her film. I kept wondering what Alfred Hitchcock, the master of voyeurism in cinema, might have made of Jeanne Dielman, a film that makes voyeurs of us all.

Bicallis LLC and Bryan Hill in Contempt of Court - Maryland
Tumblr media
Court Holds Baltimore, Maryland Company, Bicallis LLC, and owner Bryan Hill in Contempt for Failing to Comply with an Order to Restore $153,000 to Company's Employee 401(K) Plan. Bicallis LLC, owner Bryan Hill faces a $100 per day penalty until funds are restored. BALTIMORE, MD (STL.News) A federal court in Maryland has cited a Baltimore logistics, engineering, and management support services company, Bicallis LLC, and its owner, Bryan Hill, for contempt of court for failing to comply with a May 2022 consent judgment and order requiring them to restore $153,590 in missing contributions and interest to the company's 401(k) plan. On June 27, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted a motion by the U.S. Department of Labor to hold Bicallis LLC and owner Bryan Hill in contempt after they violated the court's orders.  The action follows an investigation by the department's Employee Benefits Security Administration that found the company and its owner did not forward employees' payroll deductions for the company's 401(k) plan deductions and failed to collect company matching and safe harbor contributions owed to the plan from October 2017 through December 2019. "Complying with a court order is never voluntary," said Employee Benefits Security Administration Acting Regional Director Norman Jackson in Philadelphia.  "We are committed to protecting the integrity of employee benefit plans and making certain those who serve these plans meet their legal obligations, including safeguarding employees' retirement assets.  Our investigation was the first step toward holding Bicallis LLC and Bryan Hill accountable and making the employees in his company's 401(k) plan whole." As part of its contempt finding, the court ordered that Bicallis LLC and Hill pay a fine of $100 per day until the amounts owed are paid in full. "The Department of Labor will use all of its tools to ensure compliance with the laws the department enforces," said Deputy Regional Solicitor of Labor Samantha Thomas in Philadelphia.  "We sought the court's intervention to enforce its May 2022 consent order and judgment after Bicallis LLC and owner Bryan Hill failed to comply with the agreed-upon terms and continued to violate federal law." EBSA's Philadelphia Regional Office conducted the original investigation, and the Region's Office of the Solicitor is prosecuting the case. SOURCE: U.S. Department of Labor Read the full article
