📚🎧EXPANDING THE CONTENT YOU CONSUME📚🎧
Apologies in advance as this is really poorly worded, but I wanted to put this out there because I think about it a lot.
Something my librarian talks about a lot is expanding the range of content you read/watch/listen to, not necessarily in terms of genre but in terms of creators. I think the reason people resist consuming media by people of colour/plus sized people/lgbtq+ people/anyone who strays from the 'norm' of what they know is because of discrimination and also because they worry the content be focused on the discrimination which they don't understand and cannot relate to. And while I beleive you should absolutely challenge yourself to read that kind of thing, but you should also read books by those people which don't cover heavy topics as the main focus.
Here some recommendations. This is based on the kind of stuff I normally read/listen to, please feel free to reblog this with your recommendations if you read other genres.
Romance Books
The Neighbour Favour by Kristina Forest
Seven Days In June by Tia Williams
Who Asked You by Terry McMillan
Set On You by Amy Lea (literally any book by her i love her)
The Fastest Way To Fall by Denise Williams
The Heartstopper Series by Alice Oseman
Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (again anything by them I love them)
The What If Its Us series by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
Something to Talk About by Maryl Wilsned
Podcasts (so a lot of these do cover topics like racism and homophobia etc but honestly they're really interesting please give them a listen)
Wholehearted Coaching by Shirin Eskandani
The Hey Girl Podcast by Alex Elle
The Homecoming Podcast by Dr Thema Bryant
Making Gay History by Eric Marcus? not entirely sure who its by but 100% listen to it
Bad With Money (literally amazing and so interesting, really forces you to think about stuff deeply, and its kinda funny) Gaby Dunn
Queery by Cameron Esposito
Mystery Books
The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes
Liar, Dreamer, Thief by Maria Dong
Age of Vice by Deepti Kapoor
The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff
The Raven Thief by Gigi Pandian
Someone Else's Life by Lyn Liao Butler
Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina
The King is Dead by Benjamin Dean
How to Die Famous by Benjamin Dean
Fortune Favours the Dead by Stephen Spotswood

400 years later the poet Andrew McMillan investigates Michelangelo's poems, talking to Dr Ambra Moroncini, who, as Senior Lecturer, teaches them at the University of Sussex; to Professor Konrad Eisenbichler who, as well as literature, taught a course on sexuality and gender in the Renaissance at the University of Toronto.
Colin Matthews, who was Benjamin Britten's assistant, talks about his 'Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo'. The composer's setting was a love gift to his partner, Peter Pears.
McMillan discovers growing interest in Michelangelo's poems today, especially among queer writers. Alex Cocker has just published 'Say, Spirit' in which they make versions of the sonnets, each three times, in the voices of three imagined translators.
They all talk of Michelangelo - the poet - and we hear his poems, translated by James M. Saslow, read by Sir Simon Russell Beale.

favorite books you read this year? or any book recommendations?
Absolutely!!!
Big Shadow by Marta Balcewicz
I LOVEDDDDD BIG SHADOW SO MUCH!!! Everyone please read this book! :) It's published by a Canadian indie, and Marta is SUCH an excellent writer (I worked with her on Minola!). This is the best book I've read all year 100%, and one of my all-time faves.
2. I Got A Name by Eliza Robertson
So y'all already know I admire Eliza so much as a writer, and this is her first nonfiction book (true crime). I've never read a true crime book (but used to be really into true crime), and this book was so well researched. I also listened to the audiobook that Eliza narrates, and it was fantastic!
3. Pageboy by Elliot Page
Y'ALL this book was written SOOO WELL!!! I read it in like 2 days. Also nonfiction!
4. The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
This was a reread--I originally read this book when it came out! This is like one of the only other books I know of that's written in third person present tense, so I re-read it to reinvigorate some inspo while I was writing BODY BACK. Loved!!!!
5. A Hundred Lovers by Richie Hofmann
This one's poetry! I LOVED this collection so much. Give me gay poetry and I die <3 so many Lonan and Harrison coded poems it's not even funny.
6. Physical by Andrew McMillan
This is also queer poetry! One of my viewers recommended this one to me SO THANK YOU TO THAT PERSON!! This collection feels like it's in the family of Hofmann's (they even have a similar cover???), and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Basically if I come out of a poetry collection with a ton of potential epigraphs, I loved it!

Benjamin Keefe Clark wasn’t a police officer or firefighter on September 11, 2001; he was a chef, preparing meals for the Fiduciary Trust Company on the 96th floor of the South Tower.
When the plane hit, instead of trying to save himself, he focused on guiding others to safety.
A former Marine, Clark made sure everyone in his department and the 96th floor offices evacuated.
According to Fiduciary senior vice president Bibi Conrad, Clark likely helped hundreds of employees escape. After ensuring many had fled, he even went back to check on others.
He was last seen helping a woman in a wheelchair on the 88th floor with three maintenance workers. Clark sadly perished when the building collapsed.

Genelle Guzman-McMillan was the last person rescued from the rubble of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks in 2001, having spent 27 hours trapped in the rubble.
Speaking about the incident Genelle said: “The dust and the sound and everything came crashing down. I braced myself, fell to the ground, and laid there until it came to a complete stop. Then there was this deathly silence.”
“I was trapped there for 27 hours. It felt like I was there forever. I couldn’t move and it was excruciating. I just kind of prepared myself to fall asleep and not wake up because of the pain, but every time I drifted off, I’d realize that I was still breathing and still alive.”
Genelle spent nearly three months in the hospital, but she survived against the odds.

Zero Tolerance made us into a supervillain
Caitlin Dickerson’s frightening and moving article We Need to Take Away Children was the cover story of the September 2022 issue of The Atlantic magazine. It reports on the US “Zero Tolerance” policy, the policy of deliberately separating immigrant children from their parents. It should be required reading for everyone. At least everyone who can read English. It is not just a “this was awful” piece, but also dives deeply into who wanted this policy, what they did to get it enacted, and who failed to stop it and why.
In a letter to the editor in the Novemeber 2022 issue, Dr. Ranit Mishori reports that Physicians for Human Rights asserts that the policy in question meets the UN’s criteria for torture. I am not sure it does — but if it does not meet those criteria, it is worse. Criterion (3) is that torture is “for the purpose of coercion, punishment, or intimidation”. I do not know if that criterion is limited to coercion, punishment, or intimidation of the person being tortured or not. While it is clearly torturous to a 3 year old to be forcibly removed from her parents, in this case, the U.S. government policy was in place not to coerce or punish or intimidate the 3 year old, or even her parents. The policy existed to intimidate third parties, namely the victim’s countrymen who might be contemplating an attempt at entry into the United States. Let me state that more succinctly: we were torturing person A (a child, no less) not to extract information or change the behavior of person A, or even of her parents (person B), but rather in an attempt to affect the behavior of person C. Leaving aside the question of what on earth made people like Stephen Miller think that the average Venezuelan contemplating an attempt at crossing the US border is going to have a clue what US immigration policy is like — let’s be clear, the mule who wants to charge an outlandish fee to help transport him and his family is not going to tell him — this is worse than “normal” torture. In fact, this behavior – torturing one person to affect the behavior of someone else — is so heinous it is exactly what Hollywood has the bad guy do whenever they want the audience to cheer when the good guy kills the bad guy without any due process at the end of the film.
Think about it. In Jack Reacher: Never Go Back the Hunter (Patrick Heusinger’s character) threatens to torture, and then abducts and threatens to kill, 15 year old Samantha in an attempt to control Jack Reacher’s behavior. In The Dark Knight the Joker tortures and kills people, particularly Brian Douglas, in order to try to get Batman to “take off his mask and turn himself in”. In Olympus Has Fallen Kang Yeonsak tortures several people, including Secretary of Defense Ruth McMillan, in order to coerce President Benjamin Asher to give him the code to Cerberus. In Skyfall Raoul Silva tortures (and then kills) Sévérine, in part as punishment for her betrayal, but mainly just to upset James Bond. Heck, Darth Vader himself does exactly this in The Empire Strikes Back: he tortures Leia Organa and Han Solo for the sole purpose of luring Luke Skywalker into a trap.
It is hard to swallow that we, the United States of America, are behaving not just like the villain in this story, but like a supervillain.

Jerrie and Jelly say FUCK OFF MATE
Macavity says wot i was only going to disembowel him a little
meanwhile Munkustrap is swooning very prettily
Tumblr media
Oasis cast 11: Benjamin McMillan as the damsel in distress, Benjamin Stacey as Mungojerrie, Katie Hahn as Jellylorum, Domenico Ramelli as Macavity.
And for bonus angst or crack, depending on your feelings: on this night, due to a lack of covers, Macavity's two minions who carried off Deuteronomy were none other than our favourite two orange stripey kids!
Tumblr media
(Look at the shoes: hers are almost white, his are almost black. We also get a glimpse of orange and white under his mask in another frame but it's too blurry to translate well into stills. The only other cats offstage at this point are Plato (who is Macavity), Misto (busy getting ready for his solo), and Alonzo and Gus (Mac decoys).)
Since Rumpelteazer had to participate in the 'Macavity' song, Mungojerrie brought fake Deut in alone... but honey you're not subtle we see that orange and black wig under that mask.
Tumblr media
Usually I assume the henchcats/minions are completely separate characters, but this time? Oooh this is too juicy. I'm gonna call this canon for this night: that was actually them under the disguises!
M&R carried him off, then Demeter sang I might mention Mungojerrie with Rumpelteazer right there onstage with her. Guys, they're onto you. They know where your silly little side gig has led you, even though you didn't mean for it to go that far...
... and now where's it got you?
Tumblr media
"wait what's going on I didn't realise this was actually serious please don't OH SHIT I got him hurt worse by distracting him I'M SORRY MUM"
Tumblr media
Jerrie's day keeps getting better and better. Look what you did. You messed up a perfectly good tribe protector is what you did, look at him, he's got lacerations.
... and Teazer is on the other side of the stage. Is that an incitement to cowardice ("she isn't by my side, I am paralysed by indecision") or bravery ("I must get to her somehow!")? Who knows, but eventually....
Tumblr media
... a decision is made.
And when he stands up, the whole tribe stands with him.
(Oasis cast 11, 13 April 2022)
