Under 1s account for 64 per cent of all childhood hospital admissions with Covid, study finds
By Tom Bawden
Under 1s account for 64 per cent of all childhood hospital admissions with Covid, study finds
Covid is almost as bad for babies now as it was in the early days of the pandemic, while the risk of serious illness among all other age groups has sharply reduced over time, a study has found.
Researchers found that 6,300 babies less than a year old were admitted to hospital, either wholly or partially because of Covid, in the year to August 2023.
As such, infants accounted for 64 per cent of all child admissions for Covid for that year, according to the new study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
The study shows the rate of hospital admissions among infants has hardly changed as the pandemic has progressed, with a total of 19,790 under-ones admitted between August 2020 and August 2023 (an average of 6,596 a year) – representing 43 per cent of all child admissions over that time.
Meanwhile, during the period when Delta was the dominant variant, from May to December 2021, infants made up less than 30 per cent of children’s admissions.
Taken together, these figures show that while serious cases fell sharply among children aged one and older, they are little changed among the under-ones.
The continuing high rate of hospitalisations among babies is largely because babies are born with no immunity to Covid and weak immune systems more generally.
This is in contrast to many older children, who have built some immunity from Covid infections and vaccines.
Most infants are only in hospital for a short time – about two days – but about 5 per cent needed intensive care.
“The pandemic is as bad as it ever was for babies. Under-ones are the only age group where admissions have not gone down over time,” said Professor Christina Pagel, of University College London.
“As children over one year old gained some immunity from infection or were vaccinated (with vaccination mostly in teens), their risk of needing hospital fell. But this doesn’t help infants in their first encounter with the virus.”
She expects the picture among infants to have been “about the same” in the year to August 2024 as they were the previous year, “as we’ve continued to see waves of Covid and immunity in newborns remains low”.
This is the first study to show that UK Covid hospitalisations among babies have hardly fallen during the pandemic.
Although a vaccine has been developed for children aged six months to four years, these are only given to those who are clinically vulnerable.
As such, the best protection a baby can get is if the mother is vaccinated during pregnancy – ideally in the third trimester, scientists say.
The baby builds up some protection from the mother’s vaccination “in utero” and boosts this further after birth from breastfeeding, when antibodies are passed on through breast milk. The vaccine also reduces the risk of the mother catching Covid and passing it to her baby.
Professor Pagel points out that vaccine uptake in pregnancy is quite low, at about 40 per cent, and urges more pregnant women to get vaccinated.
“Not enough infants are being offering the protection of a vaccine – from six months – and the benefits of maternal vaccinations aren’t be promoted enough,” she said.
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a vaccination during pregnancy reduced risk of hospitalisation for Covid among infants under the age of six by 61 per cent.
Analysis by the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that Covid hospitalisations in babies under 6 months old are higher than any other age group apart from over-75s – although the difference is that hospital admissions among that age group have fallen sharply over the course of the pandemic, even if they are still higher than for babies.
Dr Simon Williams, lecturer at Swansea University, who was not involved in the research, said: “The findings of this new study are very concerning and help to debunk the myth that Covid is harmless in children. Although a majority of children will not be seriously ill from Covid, this study shows that in some cases it can be serious, and particularly in babies, who are vulnerable and with low immunity.”
Sheena Cruickshank, professor of public engagement and biomedical science at the University of Manchester, who was also not involved in the study, said: “Young babies are exceptionally vulnerable to Covid as their immune systems are still developing.
“This paper shows that even while older children are being hospitalised less, this is not the case for younger children. If mothers are able to breastfeed and have been vaccinated during their later pregnancy, then their maternal antibodies can protect the baby.”
“However, takeup of these vaccines has not been quite as good as it could be leaving a lot of mums and their babies vulnerable,” she said.
Dr Mary Ramsay, director of immunisation at UK Health Security Agency, said: “The Covid vaccine for pregnant women is offered during a relatively short window during Autumn [October to December], so we advise them to take it up when it’s offered this year and not delay.
“This way the vaccine can protect more pregnant women and newborn babies, whatever stage of pregnancy they might be in and if they were to deliver prematurely.
“The Covid-19 vaccine is already offered to ‘babies over 6 months of age and children who have certain long-term conditions’, who are among those most at risk of severe illness.
“For other babies and children, Covid-19 will generally be a mild illness. Our surveillance shows that whilst infants under 6 months of age currently have the highest rates of hospitalisations, the number requiring intensive treatment remains relatively low.”
“As with all vaccination programmes, the JCVI keeps the Covid-19 vaccination programme under review and informed by best available evidence.”

AYYYOOOOO is this somethin y'all would like to read for reals??
shoutout to @chamomiletealeaf for talking to me about horny price with a breastfeeding wife!!!
we were talking about how for halloween one year price is a cowboy, the baby is a cow, and you're a milkmaid. price goes feral for your tits in the milk maid dress, smut ensues, price is wildly turned on by the way your tits leak milk like it's going out of style- groans when he sees it happen and wants to cum in record time
....... and then i went off the rails and wrote this:
you think his groan watching your milk is one of disgust so you start tearing up and john thought he was gonna cum quick watching your milk? he shoots his load without warning watching the first tear slide down your cheek
john thinks you're crying because you're so overstimulated and turned on, you think john groaned because he's disgusted, cue john trying to hold onto you tight and kiss all over your face and you wiggling out of his arms and booking it to the bathroom so you can cry in peace
come back out of the bathroom in a massive hoodie and a pair of pants, tell him in a croaky voice you're gonna go check on the baby, leave the room
johns post orgasm glow is very quickly squashed when he gets up to put on boxers, moves to follow you into the nursery, and hears you tearfully muttering things to your baby
"mommy loves you, you know that?? want you to grow up big, n strong, and loved," and when john hears your voice croak after that his heart drops out of his ass, he hears it shatter when you next mutter "and mommy and daddy are gonna give you everything you could ever want.... we'll live together and get you a good school and you'll make friends and you'll fall in love with someone who thinks you're the prettiest little lady ever... make sure you're confident so no one can build you up n break you down... get you some good military benefits so you'll be okay... i don't think you'll have to worry about a brother or sister at all- and i don't think mommy n daddy are gonna be able to stay together forever, but we're gonna try for you sweetheart. mommy'll be sad for a while but i'd do anything to make your life better baby"
john pushes the door open while trying to hold back tears, tries to wrap his arms around you, but you go to sit in the little rocking chair in the corner
whispering something like "i've got her john.... you can go back to bed. goodnight"
you've only ever called him john when you first met, and when you legally had to say his first name during your wedding vows.
for the next three days you don't let him touch you. not even in bed. he waits til you're fully asleep and breathing even before he'll pull you into his chest and finally fall asleep, only to wake up a few hours later with your body heat missing in the bed. will get up to find you in the nursery, or the kitchen, or the living room, or folding/watching laundry, staring into space with a blank stare. he gave up trying to reach out to you while you're awake, so he just stands and stares at you- taking in how beautiful he thinks you are despite the haunted shadows that have taken over your eyes. tried to tell you to come back to bed, before you sadly smile at him and say "sorry, can't sleep. probably just some weird post pregnancy sleep cycle issue. go back to sleep, i'll be there when i'm ready"
john has to get used to hugging your pillow and hope to god he can huff your scent from that to go to sleep
everything comes to a head when he catches you stiffen when he walks up behind you in the kitchen... he doesn't even reach for you, but him being close to you has you pulling at the neckline of your shirt, throwing on a jacket, adjusting the shoulder of your cardigan to cover up more of you. john's sick of not seeing your skin or feeling you anymore, so he asks what's wrong. some traded words here and there, a lot of wiping your face and folding in on yourself, and john finally scoffs, stands on the other end of the kitchen, and grinds out "love, talk to me, what did i do? i haven't bloody touched you for days. i can't sleep, i can't eat, and my heart shatters every time i look at your face and you're like a ghost! where did my wife go?!? is it post partum depression? aren't you still meeting up with that therapist? can i help? what do i do!! how do i get my wife back?!?" and you start crying- silent tears rolling down your cheeks because how can he ask that?!? how dare he act clueless and act like he didn't do anything wrong despite DESTROYING what little confidence you had left after being pregnant. you're about to respond when your alarm goes off for pumping time. you close the alarm, grab the pumping supplies, and walk off. ".... sorry john, i have to pump. let me do this n i'll come back to continue this conversation"..... but you have NEVER left the room to pump. you used to just whip your boobs out and attach the machine and let it whir away with john in the room. it's nothing he hasn't seen before, and he's helped you with clogged ducts before, so there's nothing stopping you from letting him watch. john trails after you saying that- replying with "the hell you have to leave the room for?!? you used to pump in front of me all the time?? what did i do?!? how do i get you back?!? sweetheart- i can't fix this if i don't know what's wrong?!?"
it's silent for a second, and your boobs are actually kind of starting to hurt from needing to pump. so you do it. you wait for john to keep talking when you set up the pumping supplies. when john sees your tits for the first time in what feels like weeks his breath hitches, and when he sees the first spurt of milk he groans out. you rush to cover up and look up at him bewildered and say "that!!! that's why!!! you're DISGUSTED with my boobs now- that's why everything's changed!!! look john- i'm sorry i'm not as perky, or soft, or fit as i was before i was pregnant, but i carried your fucking baby for NINE MONTHS!!!!! shit's gonna change!!! my boobs are gonna change!!! for the love of god- if you're going to be disgusted with me pumping and having breast milk i swear to GOD i will move in with my fucking mother and leave you if that'll make you happier!!! have as many perky and fit and non-mother women as you want here in our damn house if that'll help you get your rocks off"
johns heart breaks but can't figure out if he should be turned on by your anger or what the fuck to do
the baby starts screaming, you curse under your breath, before you say "... just forget it... let me go take care of her and i'll pack some stuff in the morning. i'll keep pumping and dropping milk off here until we figure out a parenting schedule or file for divorce or whatever. i can't take her out of her only home where she's comfy even though it's gonna shatter me to not be attached at the hip with her. i'm gonna go calm her down- i'll sleep in the guest room." and you stalk off
john starts genuinely crying then
.......before waiting outside if the nursery door. when you're done taking care of the baby? all bets are off.
he's pushing you into the wall and smashes his mouth to yours so hard your face hurts. he's breathing heavy and you're caught off guard and your head would have bashed into the wall if it weren't for his hand protecting the back of your skull. johns entire body is flush to yours, down to your fuckin knees. his scent crowds your space and you try to wrench your head away from him and shove his chest, before he begins just peppering your face in kisses
he says breathlessly "baby, if you ever think about leavin me," *kiss* "over some stupid shit your brain conjures up," *kiss* "ever again," *kiss* "i will hunt you down and drag you back here," *kiss* "kickin n screamin bloody murder," *kiss* "if i have to," *kiss* "... where did that idea come from, huh?" *kiss
til he fully pulls his head away, just enough to look in your eyes, and says "baby. love. dear. i think you are the most beautiful woman i have ever had the privilege of seeing in my entire life. i think you look sexiest as a mother. you're glowing, and you're all soft around the edges. you're my wife. i love you, and anything that's changed. you've carried my babe- you've taken care of her and loved her and watching you take to motherhood makes my heart and my cock swell so much im afraid they're gonna burst".... cue you crying, and giggling, and feeling his hard on grinding into the pudge of your tummy "if i ever hear you speakin about yourself like that again, i swear to all that is holy i will make you cum so hard you see stars and make you BELIEVE you're the most beautiful woman i have ever seen. i love you. if i'm honest, i never want you to not be with child ever again. you look so so beautiful all round and swollen with my babe, and the breast milk? an added bonus. fuck baby, you're so fuckin hot when i watch you pump i wanna cum in my pants like a teenager. fuck.... i lo-" he can't even finish before you smash your lips to his and drag him to bed
your next period is late. john was right. he was gonna get you pregnant again come hell or high water
......
SO LIKE IS THERE SOMETHING THERE OR AM I BEING DELUSIONAL?!?!? HELP.

Tessa Stuart at Rolling Stone:
KRISTA HARDING’S DAUGHTER was eight weeks old when that police cruiser pulled behind her on the interstate and hit the lights in September 2019. She called her boss at the Little Caesars in Pinson, Alabama, where she’d just been promoted to manager: I’m going to be a little late, but I’m coming in! Don’t panic. Harding’s registration tag was expired. She figured the officer would write her a ticket and she’d be on her way, but when he came back after running her driver’s license, he had handcuffs out. There was a felony warrant out for her arrest, he said: “Chemical endangerment of a child.” Harding used her most patient customer-service tone to ask the officer if he’d please check again. But there was no mistake, the cop confirmed: He was taking her to the Etowah County Detention Center, almost an hour’s drive away. “I’m in the back of the cop car just bawling my eyes out, like, ugly-face-snot-bubbles crying,” Harding remembers. She was worried about being away from her newborn, and she was confused: Chemical endangerment of a child? “I think of somebody cooking meth with a baby on their hip,” she says.
She’s right to think that: The Alabama law, passed in 2006, was intended to target those who expose children to toxic chemicals, or worse, explosions, while manufacturing methamphetamine in ad-hoc home labs.  Harding says it took at least eight hours to be booked into a cell that night, and it was more than a week before she was finally allowed to see a judge. She was still leaking breast milk, and desperately missing her two daughters. Her family wasn’t allowed to bring her clean underwear, so every day she washed her one pair, saturated with menstrual blood, in the cell sink, then hung them to dry.
Harding says she eventually learned the warrant for her arrest had been issued because of a urine test taken at a doctor’s visit early in her pregnancy. Sitting alone in her cell, she conjured a vague memory of her OB-GYN warning her local authorities had begun to crack down on weed. The comment had struck her as odd at the time: Nine years earlier, when she was pregnant with her first child, the same doctor at the same hospital had told Harding, who’d smoked both pot and cigarettes before she was pregnant, that she’d rather Harding kick the nicotine than the weed. (Studies are unequivocal about the fact that cigarettes contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes, but the research on weed is less conclusive, with some doctors arguing it at least has therapeutic benefits, like helping with morning sickness.)
But in the years between her first child and her second, something had changed in certain parts of Alabama. In Etowah County, in 2013, the sheriff, the district attorney, and the head of the local child-welfare agency held a press conference to announce they intended to aggressively enforce that 2006 law. Instead of going after the manufacturers of meth, though, they planned to target pregnant women who used virtually any substance they deemed harmful to a developing fetus.
“If a baby is born with a controlled-substance dependency, the mother is going to jail,” then-Sheriff Todd Entrekin said at the time. Police weren’t required to establish that a child was born with a chemical dependency, though — or even that a fetus experienced any harm — a drug test, a confession, or just an accusation of substance use during pregnancy was enough to arrest women for a first offense that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. One public defender would later call these “unwinnable cases.” Over the following decade, Etowah County imprisoned hundreds of mothers — some of whom were detained, before trial, for the rest of their pregnancies, inside one of the most brutal and inhumane prisons in the country, denied access to prenatal care and adequate nutrition, they say — in the name of protecting their children from harm.
[...]
In the past two decades, Alabama has become the undisputed champion of arresting pregnant women for actions that wouldn’t be considered crimes if they weren’t pregnant: 649 arrests between 2006 and 2022, almost as many arrests as documented in all other states combined, according to advocacy group Pregnancy Justice, which collected the statistics. Across the U.S., the vast majority of women arrested on these charges were too poor to afford a lawyer, and a quarter of cases were based on the use of a legal substance, like prescription medication.
Today, Marshall is the attorney general of Alabama, and just a few months ago, the state’s Supreme Court used the same logic — that life begins at conception, therefore an embryo is legally indistinguishable from a living child — in a decision that was responsible for shutting down IVF clinics across the state. The ruling was a triumph for the fetal-personhood movement, a nationwide crusade to endow fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetuses with constitutional rights. Personhood has been the Holy Grail for the anti-abortion movement since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, but outlawing abortion — at any stage of pregnancy, for any reason — is just the start of what legal recognition of embryos’ rights could mean for anyone who can get pregnant. Experts have long warned that elevating an embryo’s legal status effectively strips the person whose body that embryo occupies of her own rights the moment she becomes pregnant.
Across the country, this theory has led to situations like in Texas, where a hospital kept a brain-dead woman alive for almost two months — against her own advanced directive and the wishes of her family — in deference to a state law that prevents doctors from removing a pregnant person from life support. (The hospital only relented after the woman’s husband sued for “cruel and obscene mutilation of a corpse.”) Or in New Hampshire, where a court allowed a woman who was hit by a car while seven months pregnant to be sued by her future child for negligence because she failed to use “a designated crosswalk.” Or in Washington, D.C., where a terminally ill cancer patient, 26 weeks pregnant, requested palliative care, but was instead subjected to court-ordered cesarean section. Her baby survived for just two hours; she died two days later.
Or in Alabama, where, in 2019, Marshae Jones walked into the Pleasant Grove Police Department with her six-year-old daughter expecting to be interviewed for a police investigation. Months earlier, Jones, four and a half months pregnant at the time, had been shot by her co-worker during a dispute. In the hospital after the shooting, Jones underwent an emergency C-section; her baby, whom she’d named Malaysia, did not survive. Rather than indicting the shooter, though, a grand jury indicted Jones, who they decided “intentionally” caused the death of her “unborn baby” because she allegedly picked a fight “knowing she was five months pregnant.” The charges were ultimately dismissed, but Jones’ lawyer says her record still shows the arrest, and Jones, who lost her job after the incident, struggled to find work after her case attracted national attention.
The threat this ideology poses to American women is not contained to Alabama: Recognition of fetal personhood is an explicit policy goal of the national Republican Party, and it has been since the 1980s. The GOP platform calls for amending the U.S. Constitution to recognize the rights of embryos, and representatives in Congress have introduced legislation that would recognize life begins at conception hundreds of times — as recently as this current session, when the Life at Conception Act attracted the co-sponsorship of 127 sitting Republican members of Congress.
[...]
Taking inspiration from Black Americans’ fight for equal rights, the anti-abortion movement began thinking of its own crusade as a fight for equality. “The argument that the unborn was the ultimate victim of discrimination in America was really resonant with a lot of white Americans, a lot of socially conservative Americans — and it was vague enough that people who disagreed about stuff like feminism, the welfare state, children born outside of marriage, the Civil Rights Movement” could find common ground, Ziegler says.  By the time the Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade in 1973, the idea that a fetus was entitled to constitutional protections was mainstream enough to be a central piece of Texas’ argument that “Jane Roe” did not have a right to get an abortion.
The justices rejected that idea. “The word ‘person,’ as used in the Fourteenth Amendment, does not include the unborn,” Justice Harry Blackmun wrote. But he gave the movement a cause to rally behind for the next half-century by adding: “If this suggestion of personhood is established, [Roe’s] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the Amendment.”  Making that happen became the anti-abortion movement’s primary focus from that moment on. One week after Roe was decided, a U.S. congressman first proposed amending the Constitution to guarantee “the right to life to the unborn, the ill, the aged, or the incapacitated.” It was called the Human Life Amendment, and though it failed to make it to a floor vote that session, it would be reproposed more than 300 times in the following decades.  By 1980, the idea had been fully embraced by the Republican Party: Ronald Reagan’s GOP adopted it into the party platform — where it remains to this day — and in 1983, the Republican-majority Congress voted, for the first and only time, on the idea of adding a personhood amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That vote failed.
After their 1983 defeat, activists turned their attention away from the U.S. Capitol and toward the states, where they sought to insert the idea of fetal personhood into as many state laws as possible: everything from legislation creating tax deductions for fetuses or declaring them people for census-taking purposes, to expanding child-endangerment and -neglect laws.  Activists pursued this agenda everywhere, but they were most successful at advancing it in states that share certain qualities. “You could draw a Venn diagram of American slavery and see that what’s happening today is in common in those states,” says Michele Goodwin, a Georgetown University law professor and author of the book Policing the Womb. “Some would say, ‘Well, OK, how is that relevant?’ Slavery itself was explicitly about denying personal autonomy, denying the humanity of Black people. Now, clearly, these laws affect women of all ethnicities. But the point is: If you’re in a constitutional democracy and you found a way to avoid recognizing the constitutional humanity of a particular group of people, it’s something that’s not lost in the muscle memory of those who legislate and of the courts in that state.”
Rolling Stone has a solid in-depth report on the war on women and reproductive health in Alabama, going into detail the fetal personhood movement.

Harnessing the Power of Calcium: Exploring Its Benefits and Plant-Based Sources
Calcium is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in maintaining overall health and well-being. While many associate calcium with dairy products, there are numerous plant-based sources that provide this crucial nutrient. In this blog post, we will delve into the benefits of calcium for the human body and explore some of the best plant-based sources to incorporate into your diet.
The Importance of Calcium:
Calcium is widely recognized for its role in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. However, its benefits extend far beyond skeletal health. Calcium is also involved in muscle contractions, nerve function, blood clotting, and the regulation of enzyme activity. It is particularly crucial during childhood and adolescence when bones are growing, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Additionally, adequate calcium intake throughout life may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones. Furthermore, research suggests that calcium may play a role in managing blood pressure and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
Plant-Based Sources of Calcium:
For individuals who follow a plant-based or dairy-free diet, it's important to be aware of alternative sources of calcium. Here are some of the best plant-based sources to consider:
1. Leafy Greens:
Dark, leafy greens such as kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and spinach are excellent sources of calcium. These nutrient-packed vegetables not only offer calcium but also provide other essential vitamins and minerals.
2. Almonds:
Almonds are a versatile and nutritious snack that contains a considerable amount of calcium. Additionally, they offer healthy fats, protein, and fiber, making them a valuable addition to your diet.
3. Sesame Seeds:
Sesame seeds, commonly used in various cuisines, are a rich source of calcium. They can be sprinkled on salads, added to baked goods, or used in homemade granola for an extra calcium boost.
4. Tofu and Tempeh:
Tofu and tempeh, both derived from soybeans, are excellent plant-based sources of calcium. These versatile protein sources are widely used in vegetarian and vegan cooking and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes.
5. Fortified Plant-Based Milk Alternatives:
Many plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond milk, soy milk, and oat milk, are fortified with calcium to provide a comparable amount to dairy milk. Be sure to check the labels to ensure adequate calcium content.
6. Chia Seeds:
Chia seeds not only provide calcium but are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. They can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or used as a topping for yogurt or salads.
7. Beans and Lentils:
Beans and lentils, including chickpeas, black beans, and lentils, are not only excellent sources of protein and fiber but also contain notable amounts of calcium. They can be incorporated into soups, stews, salads, or even used as a base for veggie burgers.
Calcium is an essential mineral that contributes to numerous functions within the human body. While dairy products are often associated with calcium, there are plenty of plant-based sources that can provide this vital nutrient. By incorporating leafy greens, almonds, sesame seeds, tofu, fortified plant-based milk alternatives, chia seeds, beans, and lentils into your diet, you can ensure an adequate calcium intake while enjoying a diverse and nutritious plant-based lifestyle. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized guidance on meeting your calcium needs and maintaining optimal health.

Non-ABO, magical realism verse: Max and Charles are friends with benefits, and Max has a huge breeding kink. During sex he always asks Charles not to wear a condom, begging him to come inside him over and over again, blabbering about how much he wants Charles to knock him up, how he wants to carry his babies, wanting to be soft and fat with Charles’ baby. Challenges of Breastfeeding Surrogate Babies: Overcoming the Hurdles
By Harriet Collins- 2023-08-22
Tumblr media
Top Takeaways
Breastfeeding is a natural process that provides babies with essential nutrition and protects them from infections and diseases.
It helps create a bond between mother and child.
Babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life.
Surrogacy can pose challenges for breastfeeding, but induced lactation is possible for intended mothers.
Induced lactation recreates the process of breastfeeding and requires advanced preparation.
Breastfeeding is not a choice but a necessity for the good immunity of future generations. Lack of awareness about breastfeeding in surrogacy cases can be a barrier. Intended mothers can lactate and breastfeed their surrogate child.
Quoting a recent article on WIONews, breastfeeding surrogate babies can be challenging, but it is possible. Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful process that provides babies with all of their nutritional needs and helps create a bond between mother and child. However, some mothers may choose alternative feeding methods such as formula feeding.
Babies can start breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. During this time, no other foods or liquids should be provided, including water. This is important for the baby’s growth and development, as breast milk protects them from infections and diseases.
However, the journey of pregnancy and childbirth is not the same for everyone, and mothers may face numerous challenges. One such challenge is surrogacy, where a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple. Surrogacy can be a complex legal and ethical process, and regulations vary by country and jurisdiction.
When it comes to breastfeeding a surrogate baby, it is crucial to carefully consider all aspects and legalities before pursuing surrogacy. However, it should not be a hurdle for the baby to receive basic needs, such as breast milk.
Dr. Manpreet Sodhi, a Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Art at Paras Health in Gurugram, explains that intended mothers can lactate and breastfeed their child even without experiencing pregnancy. This is possible through induced lactation, which recreates the process of being able to breastfeed gradually and requires advanced preparation.
Dr. Yashica Gudesar, a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at HCMCT Manipal Hospital in Dwarka, emphasizes the health benefits of breastfeeding and notes that it is a necessity for the good immunity of our future generation. In cases of surrogacy, lack of awareness sometimes becomes a barrier to lactation, as doctors and patients may not be aware that lactation is possible in such mothers.
Breastfeeding a surrogate baby is similar to nursing a newborn, and it is essential to provide the baby with the best start in life. Breast milk provides numerous benefits for the baby’s health and well-being, and it also helps strengthen the bond between the mother and child.
In consideration of all these factors, while breastfeeding surrogate babies may present challenges, it is possible through induced lactation. Intended mothers can prepare themselves for breastfeeding and provide their babies with the nutritional and emotional benefits of breast milk. It is important for healthcare professionals and patients to be aware of this possibility and to provide support and guidance to ensure the best outcomes for both mothers and babies.
Milk Banks are supposed to benefit sick babies or babies who lost their mother. Now families, wether that be a hetro couple or two non-women, that were able to exploit a woman for a bio baby could be taking from the supply that families in temporary crisis are dependent on.

Breastfeeding Bliss: Unveiling the Magic of Lactation
Breastfeeding is often referred to as one of the most beautiful and natural experiences between a mother and her child. It is a magical journey that not only provides essential nutrition to the newborn but also fosters a deep emotional bond between mother and baby. The act of lactation is a fascinating biological process that involves a complex interplay of hormones, physical sensations, and the miraculous ability of a woman's body to nourish and sustain life. Let's delve into the world of breastfeeding and uncover the incredible magic behind lactation.
Tumblr media
At its core, breastfeeding is a remarkable symbiotic relationship that has evolved over millions of years. It begins during pregnancy when a woman’s body undergoes significant changes to prepare for nurturing her baby. Hormones, such as prolactin and oxytocin, play a crucial role in this process. Prolactin, often referred to as the “milk-making hormone,” stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk, while oxytocin triggers the let-down reflex, allowing the milk to flow.
The act of breastfeeding itself is a sensory experience like no other. When a baby latches onto the breast, a cascade of sensory feedback occurs. The mother’s body responds to the baby’s suckling by releasing oxytocin, creating a wave of relaxation and euphoria known as the “love hormone.” This surge of oxytocin not only promotes milk flow but also enhances the bond between mother and baby. The sensation of warmth, closeness, and rhythmic sucking triggers a sense of calm and contentment for both mother and child, often referred to as “breastfeeding bliss.” The same emotions also develop at the tie of mother baby massage in Noida.
Breast milk, often hailed as nature’s perfect food, is a marvel in itself. It is a living fluid that adapts to the changing needs of the growing baby. Colostrum, the first milk produced in the early days after birth, is rich in antibodies and immune-boosting properties, providing the newborn with essential protection against infections. As the baby grows, the composition of breast milk adjusts to meet their nutritional requirements, offering a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Beyond its nutritional value, breast milk contains a plethora of bioactive components that science is only just beginning to understand. It is brimming with antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and stem cells that contribute to the baby’s overall health and development. Breastfeeding has been linked to a lower risk of various health conditions for both mother and baby, including allergies, asthma, obesity, and even certain types of cancer. The magic of lactation lies not only in its ability to sustain life but also in its potential to shape a healthier future for generations to come.
Breastfeeding offers benefits that extend far beyond the realm of physical health. It fosters a profound emotional connection between mother and baby, creating a sense of security, comfort, and love. The act of nursing provides an opportunity for skin-to-skin contact, eye contact, and gentle caresses, all of which contribute to the development of a strong bond. This bond strengthens the foundation for the child’s emotional well-being and lays the groundwork for healthy relationships in the future.
However, it is important to acknowledge that breastfeeding is not always a straightforward journey for every mother. It can come with its own challenges, including latching difficulties, low milk supply, or discomfort. It is essential for mothers to have access to professional support like lactation consultant, education, and resources to overcome these hurdles and achieve their breastfeeding goals. Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and every drop of breast milk is valuable, regardless of the duration.
In addition to the wonders of breastfeeding, postnatal yoga offers a fantastic way for new mothers to reconnect with their bodies and embrace the transformative journey of motherhood. Practicing yoga after childbirth can help women regain strength, flexibility, and balance while promoting overall well-being. It provides a gentle yet effective way to adjust to the physical changes that occur during the postpartum period. Postnatal yoga sequences are specifically designed to target areas that may have been affected during pregnancy and childbirth, such as the pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, and back. These gentle stretches and poses not only aid in physical recovery but also contribute to mental and emotional healing, allowing mothers to find a sense of calm and inner peace amidst the demands of motherhood. Postnatal yoga classes often create a supportive community of like-minded women, providing an opportunity to share experiences, gain guidance, and build lasting friendships. By incorporating postnatal yoga into their breastfeeding journey, mothers can enhance their overall sense of well-being and find even more bliss in the magical moments of lactation.

Milk Thistle
Harvest: You can harvest year around but harvest right after bloom to avoid bitterness (it's still bitter) and you can harvest all parts (seeds, roots, leaves, flower, etc) invasive to the west hemp please harvest!
Magickal Properties: originally for warding off negative energy and gloom or lethargy. However as it has been imported across the world the known properties depend on the country.
Can consume 300 milligrams daily or up to 700 mg, 3 times per day for 24 weeks. Side effects of large doses include digestion problems.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4116427/
" Results from clinical trials of milk thistle for liver diseases have been conflicting or haven’t been clinically meaningful. Some of the studies have been of poor quality, too. Although some studies have shown positive results on milk thistle for people with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, the overall research does not show a benefit. A small number of studies have suggested that milk thistle extract might be beneficial for diabetes, but the conclusions about its effectiveness are not definite. It’s not known whether milk thistle is helpful for other conditions. In clinical trials, milk thistle appears to be well tolerated in recommended doses. Occasionally, people report various digestive side effects. Milk thistle may produce allergic reactions, which tend to be more common among people who are allergic to plants in the same family (for example, ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, and daisy). Milk thistle may lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. People with diabetes should use caution. Little is known about whether it’s safe to use milk thistle during pregnancy or while breastfeeding."

Best Foods to Eat When You're Pregnant - Dr. Shubhra Goyal
Tumblr media
When you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, it is very important to treat your health seriously and plan your diet properly. A nourishing diet is necessary to preserve the health of your unborn child from conception on.
As soon as you find out you're pregnant, it's normal to start reviewing your eating habits. But like many other people, you might be tempted to consult your mother or friends, the internet, or your past pregnancy practices for guidance. You might be surprised to learn that every pregnancy is unique. The body may react differently to physical or hormonal changes that may impact pregnancy depending on your age or surroundings.
You should place a specific emphasis on whole foods that give you more of the nutrients you'd need if you weren't pregnant while developing a healthy eating plan, such as:
Vitamins, minerals, and lean protein
Wholesome fats and complex carbohydrates
Fluids and fibre
To help you meet your nutrient goals while you are pregnant, here are some foods that are incredibly nutritious.
1. Dairy items
To meet the demands of your growing foetus throughout pregnancy, you must consume extra protein and calcium. Milk, cheese, and yoghurt should be included in the menu. Dairy products contain two sorts of top-notch proteins: casein and whey. The best source of calcium is dairy, which is also a good source of phosphorus, B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc. Due to its higher calcium content than the bulk of other dairy products, Greek yoghurt is particularly helpful. There are some types of bacteria called probiotics that help with digestive health. You might be able to handle yoghurt, especially probiotic yoghurt, if you have a lactose intolerance. There may be an entire variant of yoghurt parfaits, smoothies, and lassis waiting.
2. Legumes
Lentils, peas, beans, chickpeas, soybeans, and peanuts are counted in this category of foods (a.k.a. a tonne of awesome recipe ingredients!). Legumes are excellent plant-based providers of calcium, iron, folate, fibre, protein, and other nutrients that your body needs more of while pregnant. The most important vitamin is folate (B9). In the first trimester and even earlier, it is essential for both you and the unborn kid. It might be challenging to meet the recommended daily intake of 600 micrograms (mcg) of folate by cuisine alone. However, including legumes can help you get there if your doctor recommends supplementation.
Legumes typically include a lot of fibre. Some varieties also include high quantities of iron, magnesium, and potassium. Consider including legumes in your diet with recipes like hummus on whole grain toast, black beans in a taco salad, or lentil curry.
3. Eggs
The perfect health meal, those wonderful, edible eggs have a tiny amount of practically every vitamin you require. Roughly 80 calories, excellent protein, fat, and a wealth of vitamins and minerals may be found in one large egg. This essential vitamin choline, which is needed during pregnancy, is abundant in eggs. It is vital for a baby's brain development and helps to prevent improper spine and brain growth. Approximately 147 milligrams (mg) of choline can be found in one entire egg, which brings you closer to the current daily choline intake recommendation of 450 mg.
4. Broccoli and leafy vegetables
It should come as no surprise that broccoli and other dark, green veggies like kale and spinach are incredibly nutrient-dense. They can frequently be sneaked into a range of cuisines, despite the fact that you might not appreciate eating them. Fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, calcium, iron, folate, and potassium are a few benefits. They are a veritable treasure trove. Because of all the fibre they contain, green vegetable servings are a good way to enhance vitamin intake and prevent constipation. Additionally, vegetables have been associated with better weight of the infant post birth.

By Sheena Cruickshank
A couple of years ago I wrote an article in The Conversation about the quiet removal of the offer to vaccinate primary age children to protect them against COVID-19 in England. The decision was that any child who turned five after August 2022 would not be eligible to receive a COVID vaccine until they are 12, unless they are in a higher-risk group. Vaccines for children under the age of 4 (from the age of 6 months), whilst approved for use on the UK, are not, nor have been, provided. This is very different to other countries including the USA which do offer vaccines to children from 6 months of age. What I want to do this with article is talk through some recent studies on paediatric infection and consider the potential implications of that, if any, on vaccine policy.
Why are most children not offered COVID-19 vaccines in the UK?
The reason for this is the idea that COVID is a less serious infection in young children than it is in adult. Whilst this can be true for many children, some do experience worse infections and a recent paper has looked at data in the UK regarding hospitalisations for COVID-19 across age groups. I also encourage you to read Christina Pagel’s excellent substack summarising the findings here.
The research analysis summarised in Professor Pagel’s substack showed that over 40% of all admissions in children between 2020 and 23 (under the age of 18) were in infants under the age of 1.
Vaccines and pregnancy.
Young infants are exceptionally vulnerable to COVID 19. The reason for this is that infants’ immune systems are still developing which makes them particularly vulnerable to any infection including COVID-19. The good news is that babies can be protected from COVID-19 in the first six months of life if the mum has been recently vaccinated. This is because if the mum is vaccinated she can pass on protective antibodies to the developing baby whilst pregnant. These will wane over time but if the mum is then able to breastfeed she can then top up the baby’s antibodies further by passing on antibodies that are found in breast milk.
Covid vaccines in pregnancy are recommended in the UK. These vaccines are recommended as the severity of COVID-19 is higher in unvaccinated than vaccinated women. Although the risk in the post-omicron era is lower, there is still a greater risk to the mum and baby from COVID-19. However, takeup of COVID-19 vaccines has not been great in pregnant women. For example, a study showed that only 1 in 3 pregnant women would have the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. Younger women and people from socially economically deprived backgrounds were least likely to be vaccinated. Much more targeted work must be done to work with pregnant women and explain why these vaccines are both safe and important. Dr Viki Male maintains an excellent and up-to-date list of research on vaccines and COVID-19 in pregnancy so do look at her google document if you have further questions.
What are the risks of COVID-19 for older children?
Whilst I would personally advocate that infants and children would benefit from the offer of a vaccine between 6 months to 4 years of age to help develop their immunity so their first encounter with COVID-19 is helped and shaped by vaccine induced immunity, its unlikely the policy in the UK will change.
The current rationale influencing UK policy is that most children will be exposed to infection via school or nursery and that the risks of severe impacts of COVID are low. This is because most children with COVID-19 remain asymptomatic or develop mild disease, often with upper respiratory symptoms. The proportion of children over the age of 1 who get severe disease is still rare. Of those children that do get severe disease, it has been suggested that many children who require hospitalised with Covid have underlying health conditions. This thinking then influences the policy decisions. However, in older children (over the age of 1) this is true for around half of all hospitalisations though so that reasoning doesn’t quite chime. However, it is true that overall deaths from COVID in children DO remain rare which is very good news. The green book (which publishes data and recommendations for vaccines) cites a 2022 study which showed an infection fatality ratio of less than 1 in 100,000 infections in 0-19 year-olds. The risk is therefore considered low and decision makers have been concerned this risk is outweighed by the possible risk of acute resolving myocarditis from the vaccine in adolescent boys.
However, infection is NOT risk-free and some children do develop Long Covid (symptoms that last more than 4 weeks). We still do not understand why this happens and how we can better identify children who are most at risk. This is important so we can establish who falls into the more vulnerable groups that are currently eligible for vaccines. A recent scoping review was published investigating Long Covid in 659,286 children and adolescents under the age 21. A scoping review looks at the published literature and tries to build a consensus of what the research is telling us. The incidence of Long Covid was really variable in children so we need to better understand the true incidence- one study for example suggested 3.7% children developed Long Covid symptoms. Surprisingly, 80% of the cases of long Covid started with a mild infection. This suggests that severity might not be the best indicator of vaccine eligibility and must be followed up. Symptoms very hugely variable but many children described how this affected their day- to day lives a lot (see below). This must be absolutely devastating and we must understand why some children get Long Covid symptoms.
Many of the children identified in the scoping study had pre-existing conditions including a spectrum of allergic conditions (asthma, allergy, allergic rhinitis) and/or obesity. These are not necessarily all groups considered at risk and eligible for childhood vaccines in the UK. Of these criteria, only children with severe asthma that is poorly controlled are currently eligible. This scoping study needs following up but, as vaccination reduces the likelihood of developing post-Covid complications, it could suggest we may need to revise eligibility for the vaccines in children to further reduce the risk of Long Covid in children.
Other risks of infection should be evaluated. A recent paper showed the growing incidence of juvenile type II diabetes within 6 months of the diagnosis of COVID 19 in children between 10 and 19 years of age. Studies like this show the need to continue to assess the impacts of the infection in the un-vaccinated.
It is vital that we understand the scale of the risks, and who are most at risk so that if can ensure that decisions regarding vaccinating children are made in the light of all the most up to date evidence. Much more work is needed too to enhance vaccine information, address vaccine hesitancy and take-up in pregnant women so that babies can be best protected from COVID-19.

I didn't know what pennyroyal was because I'm not a native English speaker, so I googled it. I was surprised to find that it's something I've always known as a tea. Googling in English I mostly found warnings about the toxicity of pennyroyal oil, and in my language I found articles about the benefits of the tea. All the pages talking about benefits warn about dosage and risk of liver damage, and to not take it during pregnancy or lactation because it may cause abortion and it can poison the milk. Thankfully in my country essential oils are not so popular. Apparently the highest dosage recommended is 10g a day. FOR TEA.
Essential oils are much, much more concentrated than tea. Like, so much more. One drop of essential oil is much stronger than 10g of tea, but I can't guarantee this is reliable information.
I'm a big tea drinker and I have never consumed 10g of anything in one day. Teas are not necessarily safe because they are natural. They all have recommended dosages, side effects, contraindications, and even interactions with medications. Do not drink pennyroyal tea if you are pregnant (and want to stay pregnant), breastfeeding, have liver or kidney problems, or low blood sugar. It's a diuretic, can make you dehydrated. And under no circumstances use the oil for anything.
This meme is a MURDER ATTEMPT.
Tumblr media
I am absolutely fucking serious. The original meme, without the big red denial, is someone's attempt to fucking kill people.
There is NO SAFE DOSAGE of pennyroyal oil. Even Mother Earth News says there's no reason to use pennyroyal essential oil for ANYTHING, even topically or as a fragrance, for fuckssake! That should give you some idea about how dangerous it is!
Pennyroyal tea, plant matter in hot water, is a traditional abortifacient. It is *incredibly* dangerous, induces abortion by bringing the body close to organ failure (and frequently pushing the system right over the edge, because dosage is impossible to meter), but I would drink a gallon of it before I took a half-teaspoon of pennyroyal essential oil.
Two teaspoons, taken across 48 hours, has successfully killed someone.
Three teaspoons taken as a single dosage killed the consumer within THREE HOURS.
There is NO SAFE DOSAGE! FOR PENNYROYAL OIL INTERNALLY! NONE!
The person who made this meme is PURPOSEFULLY, ACTIVELY, trying to get desperate people killed!
