Incoming Kyuu x OC Ramble (because I haven’t gotten around to writing anything on it and it’s driving me cazy!)
Tumblr media
I’ve had this idea for a while now. Basically, Kyuu meets a cocker spaniel named Poppy and they both think the other is way out of their league but have massive crushes on each other before eventually getting together.
- So about Poppy: Kyuu either meets her sometime after the events in the manga where they both happen to work at a coffee shop OR were already kind of friends before that.
Poppy could be described as a nerd who loves books and practically lives at the library. A little shy, but sweet and cheerful.
- Kyuu is drawn to Poppy by two things. One being she’s the first carnivore she ever knew who is about the same height as her (Poppy being taller by only half an inch) and doesn’t look down (literally) at her.
The second is Poppy knows little to nothing about Kyuu’s life in the Black Market and doesn’t treat her as a ‘poor little rabbit’ or a challenge to her strength as a carnivore because of it. When they hangout and do things together, Kyuu feels like any other young woman. Like she never stepped foot in the Black Market at all.
- She thinks Poppy is pretty and cute and finds her joy for life and books contagious, but Kyuu thinks Poppy would never fall for an “uneducated, former livestock product” like her. She also feels insecure about her childhood and doesn’t want Poppy to know that side of her.
- Meanwhile, Poppy is both amazed and a little bit intimidated by Kyuu. While Kyuu does come off as blunt and sometimes clueless, Poppy admires her for her confidence and her bravery. She also loves Kyuu’s kickass nature and that she can fight bigger animals then her.
- Poppy teaches Kyuu how to read and Kyuu teaches Poppy how to defend herself.
- So anyways, Poppy thinks Kyuu isn’t interested in her because she’s a dog and she thinks Kyuu might prefer someone taller than her (or could fight like she can).
- When they become girlfriends, Kyuu starts to realize that there is a life outside of the Black Market and that she doesn’t have to stay there if she doesn’t want to or be loved for her strength or for her body.
- Kyuu’s nickname for Poppy is ‘Poppyseed’ while Poppy calls Kyuu her ‘Wonder Woman’.
- Side Note: I have an unofficial idea where Kyuu and Poppy are married and Poppy gets pregnant via donor and they have a lop eared rabbit and cocker spaniel hybrid child together (but this is only a thought! 😅)
TLDR: An AU where Kyuu is in love with a cocker spaniel.

my favorite part of fandom is that specific moment when we all collectively go, "Oh yes, now blorbo needs to open a coffee shop" followed by the infamous "and they should fall in love w shitto while they're at it"

you know in hindsight it’s clear a lot of the discourse around the metaphors/themes within beastars was people being unable to accept that a lot of it wasn’t a straight 1:1 with real life relationships but instead multiple overlapping ideas surrounding societally deemed non-normative attraction, ‘race’ and ‘gender’ as societal constructs, and grappling with attraction and desire as an adolescent/young adult

There's just something deeply funny to me about a depraved villain who wears pastel floral patterned shirts... the whimsy of it all...

Melon (Beastars) being a canonically asexual character is so interesting to me, especially since I haven’t really seen it discussed much. (Also btw this is unsorted ramblings from an ace-spectrum person, I don’t really have a specific point here I’m just spouting thoughts)
Tw: mentions of SA trauma, murder and misogyny (?). Also I’m reading an English translated version, so if anything was lost between languages or culture please let me know.
It follows the trope of “doesn’t experience attraction because of some curse or disability” I’ve seen for a lot of “unintentionally” ace characters, but… he doesn’t really seem to be bothered by it. The only time he acts upset about it is the speech he gives his tattoo artist, which was just a ploy to gain sympathy from Legoshi. He’s much more bothered by lacking taste, something that disrupts his everyday life. He doesn’t give his lack of attraction much thought.
He tries so hard to gain a sense of taste by devouring herbivores, but he doesn’t care about not wanting to have sex.
Melon is also implied to have been sexually abused by his mother in his childhood, and even though his asexuality is unrelated to his trauma, it’s treated like his sexual aversion is. He mocks the Shishigumi for their attraction, he finds the scent of female pheromones repulsive because they remind him of his mother, leopard spots make him ill because they show off the wearers lust like they did for his mother.
He’s a character contented with his own sexuality, but also clearly impacted by his past trauma and I dunno I wish other people would talk about him

My Issue with The Infamous Louis Panel
Tumblr media
I think y’all know exactly what I’m talking about so let me just dive into it.
Aside from Louis being a total hypocrite and being involved with the very livestock business HE came from, this panel had the potential to completely change Louis’ character and (possibly) his influence on the Beastars plot but this panel is NEVER mentioned again. You could cut it from the entire plot and it literally wouldn’t impact the story whatsoever.
So next to it making Louis no better than the carnivores that sold him as livestock (or pretty much exactly like them!), it’s probably the most uselessness panel in the entire manga! (Or one of the top ten worst plot points from the story, whatever you wanna call it)
That all being said, here’s how I approach it in my fanfics…Completely ignore it! I acknowledge and include Louis being involved in and witnessing some illegal stuff while boss of the Shishigumi, but just the drug and meat dealing/eating and cannibalism on his part.
Now, here’s what I think SHOULD have happened with this panel:
Have an entire chapter dedicated to it and it showing Louis’ shock and horror that the livestock business is somehow still active, demand the immediate release of the poor kids in it, and then use his status as the Shishigumi’s boss to find out how he ended up being sold as livestock and where his birth parents are.
OR! This but Louis has time to really think about it and weigh his options: Chose his own survival and truly become a predator animal, just like carnivores or try to save those children and risk his own life in doing so (I was convinced the Shishigumi would kill him if he attempted something like that when I first read the manga and I could see a similar situation happening here too-albeit maybe it would have been whoever runs the livestock trade or it’s customers).
Side thought: If Louis were forced into it (meaning he didn’t want to be part of the livestock trade and tried to have it shit down but was told he could be killed/eaten if he didn’t), he could have had a total identity crisis and feeling immense guilt and (possibly) a real bonding moment where members of the Shishigumi try to comfort him and reveal that this is what life in the Black Market is truly like: That everyone is prey that can be killed and eaten at any time. A place to kill or be killed.
In either scenario, Louis would be forced to re-think his entire belief system and previous convictions about what it means to be predator and prey animals and which side he’s on. This could have also been a chance for him to truly come to terms with his past and find closure for what had happened to him, which arguably could have been just as impactful (if not more so) than Louis meeting Ibuki and the Shishigumi.
TLDR: That panel of Louis selling kids as livestock is completely useless and is a terrible missed opportunity for character growth and serious angst.

Death stranding exists in the beastars universe, meaning hideo kojima exists in the beastars universe, meaning the events that led to kojima making death stranding happened in the beastars universe, meaning metal gear solid not only exists in the beastars universe but is just as popular and influential as it is irl.
This begs two questions: what animal is hideo kojima, and what is solid snake's canonical fursona

omg i saw this post on TikTok talking about how uncomfortable they were with interspecies relationships in beastars… that it looks “wrong” and that it’ll never work out… they showed footage from season 3 as well, like how have you been watching this far and not paying attention???

The show that changed my life forever? Bojack Horseman
Tumblr media
This show changed how I feel and write redemption stories. It’s my favorite thing to write about and include in my fanfics, but Bojack Horseman’s final season challenged how I approach it.
Whereas before I would have focused more on the reasons for how and why a villain gets redeemed, I now find myself considering the crimes and evil things they did as villains and how that damage will never really go away. Especially if it involves:
- Abuse or torture (of any kind)
- Lying, manipulating, and gaslighting
- Deliberately causing or contributing to the death of one or more person(s)
Let me be clear here, I love villain characters. I just find them interesting and complex, and that’s largely a credit to how they are portrayed in movies, tv shows, and stuff. There are tons of villainous characters I would love to see do better, put all their demons behind them and live happier lives but I also think it would be a mistake to not include or acknowledge the harm they have caused (assuming of course if the fanfic takes place after they did said actions or even follows canon at all).
Here’s a brief list of villains to give y’all an idea:
- Megatron and Starscream (Transformers)
- Koba, Red, Winter, Sylva, Lightning, and Preacher (Reboot Planet of the Apes)
- Tai Lung and Lord Shen (Kung Fu Panda)
- Drago Bludvist (How To Train Your Dragon)
- Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter)
- General Woundwort (Watership Down)
- Steele (Balto)
- Melon and Yahya (Beastars)
- Cluny the Scourge, Vitch, Slagar the Cruel, and Badrang the Tyrant (Redwall)
The thing is, Bojack Horseman’s last season showed that while a person may have moved on, may truly want to change, and have people supporting them, the things they have done are not necessarily all forgivable. Sure, some things might be forgiven or even understandable depending on the circumstances or reasoning but not everything is.
Most if not all of the villains I just listed have killed people, abused, tortured, enslaved or assisted in the abuse, torture, and enslavement of others, or are total tyrants who crave power and control over other people. If and when I write a redemption story for any of them is now a question of ‘how would it work’ and ‘If they had a chance at redemption, would they actually take it and be serious about it?’.
And how would the people they have hurt feel about it? There’s just so many layers to it that doesn’t necessarily be part of a fanfic-assuming canon divergence there-but if it does follow canon it feels weird to not acknowledge it or include it in the villain’s redemption story.
