SPN time travel au lets go
Supernatural time travel au where the world ends.
Chuck wrote a failsafe into the universe when he realized that Sam and Dean were getting too competent for their won good, so when Jack kills Chuck, the failsafe triggers and whipes everything out.
The only ones left standing are Jack, whom is the new god and therefore a little more powerfull then the rest, and Sam, because of a spell Rowena put on him. Before they both die, Jack tells Sam that they can still safe everyone by going back in time. If Sam can rally hell behind him, and Jack rally's heavens angels, they can together kill chuck. If Jack can transport them to before Chuck made the failsafe, they can make this right.
And thus, Sam dies, and then wakes up roughly 19 years in the past, on the day he's supposed to leave for collage. And he does. He recons that he only has a few weeks at most to rally all of hell behind him and he cannot do that with a 22 year old Dean hanging on his shoulder, trying to protect him. (not to mentions his shitty father whom is also there and holy shit Sam hasn't thought about him for a while, but his day just got from bad to worse)
Anyhow, he wakes up in cold sweat, trows up into the toilet, and tries his very hardest not to get weepy when he sees is 22 brother for the first time again. He's so young. He's practically a baby. His eyes are full of light and he hasn't seen hell yet. Hell, he doesn't even know hell exists yet. He's still innocent and the worst thing he's ever faced is Azazel. Sam would do anything to keep him that way.
So, he leaves. he tells dad about collage, they fight. Sam has to surpress his urge to punch is father out because holy shit the man is being childish, but he manages to get away after his father punches his instead. Dean comes between them and Sam almost laughs. He had forgotten that his father punches like a bitch. He's been tortured by the devil, he died like, 8 times. that was nothing.
he doesn't go to Stanford. Or well, he does, but only to see Jess. She doesn't see him, of course. Azazel told him she was doomed to die the second she laid eyes on him, and he will not let that slide. She's so young, so innocent. Still a child by all accounts. Sam almost feels like a creep. He was almost 40 by now, even though he doesn't look it. He still loves her, he always will, but he can't love her like he used to anymore.
He leaves campus without ever checking in. He was never there to begin with.
After finding and more or less recruiting the rest of the special children, It's surprisingly easy to take over hell.
Hell is a mess.
Crowly is sort of in charge, but not really, Hell has become a lawless land in Chucks relative absence. And well, by manipulating Azazel, and killing a few demons that are not with the program, he quickly establishes himself as king, with the rest of the special children as his generals. At once, they march onto heaven. He gives strict orders to only go for Chuck. Leave the angels be, Only kill god.
And they do. With the angels, demons, Jack and Sam working together, Chuck dies, and Jack takes over.
Sam himself starts revamping hell for it previous purpose: punishing the wicked. Not only that, but punishing them with severity to their crime. Sure, theft is a sin, but you shouldn't get tortured for forever just because you took a TV that wasn't yours, you feel me?
At this point, Azazel realizes that his was a bad idea, Sam is now ultimate ruler of hell and nothing is going as planned. First and formost, he has absoulutely refused to even go near the idea of becoming the vessel for lucifer, and secondly, he's powerfull enough to actually be king of hell without him. there have been several uprisings, but sam has squashed them all down with little effort.
it's starting to become concerning.
before he can do anything about it tho, sam straight up murders him. No drama, no fanciness, Sam just striaght up stabs him in the back "That's for ruining my life you sicko" and he's dead. He doesn't deserve better.
The demons that disagree with sam start to flee at that point. trying to usurp him isn't working, but if they regroup in the mortal world, sam would be too busy ruling hell to come after them.
But no, Sam makes a deal with Crowley, Crowley becomes his official regent and rules with Sam's rules in Sam's absence, and in exchange, Sam gets Crowley's soul, just to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid like take the power for himself or something.
So now that hell is fixed (he did that in like, roughly one earth year, so 12 hell years) he can go above ground, to kill the demons that are escaping to earth and thus terrorizing human mortals.
he quickly makes a name for himself in the hunter ranks. None of them understand how this 19 year old kid is able to kill this many demons in this little time, yet every time someone has a demon problem, it's Sam who shows up, and straight up kills them, which is notoriously difficult.
Some even claim that the demons seem to fear the youngest Winchester. One or two are spreading stories that a demon called Sam 'your majesty' but nobody believes that. And that's without speaking about the other people that seem to occasionally hover around, clearly his friends, but they seem to listen to him, like he is their leader.
All in all, the hunters aren't sure what to make of him.
And then the bunkers start showing up. Safehouses all accross the country, where hunters can relax, restock and heal from injuries. It's crazy. Nobody knows where the bunkers come from, but they seem old.
Meanwhile, John and Dean have no idea what is going on. John is being his antisocial self and none of the hunters have any rush to tell the volatile man that they all think his youngest son (his pride and joy that left them) has gone completely sideways and is now terrifying. They are straight up minding their business and just avoiding them like usual.
Bobby knows. Sam explained it to him, well part of it anyway. About hell, and god and the devil. Bobby didn't take his word for it at first, but when Sam showed him hell, it all became a lot more believable. He begs Bobby not to tell his brother and father. That this is his fight and he doesn't want his brother in this mess. Bobby promises.
I will write a part two with a reunion at some point, if you want me to tag you in it, reply to it!

sam is afraid of lucifer - but not just for reasons we think
this is another spn random too late at night that occurred to me today: sam is afraid of lucifer - d-uh! : sam has seen lucifers true face, hes tortured him in hell for 180 years, manipulated him his entire life in order to posess him etc,etc.... so yeah d-uh ofc hes scared!.... but theres this horrifying thought thats occurred to me just falling asleep (yeh apparently in that fuzzy place before sleep i head towards spn - ah spn is my true love!)... those might not be the only reasons...
If anyone been in a toxic relationship or abusive situation or coercive situation they might have a better insight - the thing about being in those situations is - you *know* how bad that person is, you *know* how abusive they are, you *know* they're toxic to you and for you and you should not be there...but you know what the most evil, degrading absolute horror of a situation like that is? - being convinced, against your better judgement, your logic to stay - having your own "goodness" turned against you to manipulate you into staying - your compassion and heart and empathy being turned against you into staying - so they can abuse you more, with your seeming "consent" - making you an accomplice in your own murder n rape.... and making you a contemptible, pathetic person in your own eyes cos its making you complicit in your own violations - of your body, mind, heart and spirit... the devil is not evil for what he does to you - its because of what he gets you to do, to yourself, fully aware - the slippery rope, the seduction into it...
Even if you do survive - you will never again trust your own judgement or have faith in yourself or any self-worth or confidence ...let alone heal, help others and have compassion and retain empathy for others...
Now multiply this by a 100, a 1000...coz what i described was a human domestic abuse situation - can you imagine what lucifer could have done to sam?.... no, its not the rapes and the tortures and the hooks and eye-gouging....what samd be afraid of lucifer for the most was how easy itd be for sam to slip back into that mode of being "lucifers b*ch" all while thinking ge deserves it . ... its the "conditioning" of sam that lucifer is capable of/has shown/has done to sam that sam has to fight against every single day....
Tumblr media
all leading to even more feelings of self-doubt, worthlessness,insecurity,self-loathing "unclean"-ness.... ie, its what sam becomes when in proximity to lucifer that hed be afraid of most i reckon...
Tumblr media
And the thing that gets me absolutely frothing at the mouth about spn-writers, is - sam is repeatedly having to confront and rebuild himself as lucifer is brought back over n over again right in sams face... the absolute exhaustion on having to dig himself out of that headspace all over again - all while terrified that maybe this time, he cant dig himself out, maybe this time he just. Cant. ... leaving sam to think maybe he really didnt make it out of hell after all...
(& yet sammy does have that strength to rebuild himself and even has enough compassion left over to help nick and lucifers kid - my absolute fucken king sammy!)

His mental and physical health is spiralling and here he is working a little case. He didn't have to! He could have curled up on the bed and never lift a finger again. But no, he helped her get rid of her brother's Ghost. Sam freakin Winchester is a hero.

proof of this.. despite everything.. HE DIDN'T BREAK!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s still sad sam time so get this, sam who doesn’t feel pain like normal anymore! he rips a nail clean off and it truly doesn’t even register
he twists his ankle and only notices because it’s swelled up so much his foot won’t fit into his boot
in the beginning, in the cage, there was a lot of restricting. luci would bind his legs to his thighs with a literal nail gun from hell. and then he took a liking to eating him. with utensils that were so blunt it was like being pulverized in the worlds slowest blender… so sam’s pain tolerance is fucked
but that’s ok with him! this body is just a vessel, he can appreciate that it can take the hits… dean less so. he sees sam pop his dislocated joints like it’s nothing and there are a few times sam misses a stab wound so deans now always observant of blood seeping through his clothes, trying to guess if sam forgot a suture or two.

The reason I love First Blood and other episodes like it, where the boys are just escaping capture, is because I love when they get this otherness about them.
Like yeah, they are just two brothers who fight monsters. They like beer and hanging out.
But even around other Hunters…they are legends. They aren’t normal. The stories of them dying and coming back, of fighting the devil, they are otherized.
Around monsters they are legends. They are what the monsters are afraid of. How many times in the series has a monster of the week said “The Winchesters. I’ve heard of you.” Even among beasts and creatures, the Winchesters are a myth to be fearful of because of their vengeance.
So you put these two individuals up against normal people? It shows just how far from human Dean and Sam are. They are biologically human, yeah. But at their cores, they’ve been through so much more than what a normal person can endure. They’ve done and faced things beyond the ability to cope. The things that people fear, fear the Winchesters.
Episodes like First Blood emphasize their otherness, how non-human the boys are now. They like to drink beer and eat pizza, but they also know how to slaughter men without a second thought.

Dean Winchester is living a plain, ordinary, and boring life. Until one day a new student shows up in the little town of Spain, SD. It’s love at first sight, but then an unimaginable tragedy happens, and Dean is left alone in his misery. Or is he a student attending Oxford University on a full athletic scholarship who finds a familiar face in his coxswain? Or is he hiking in the desert and attempting to save a known stranger? Or is he a traveler who stops for the night at a cheap motel and finds the pizza man of his dreams? Or is he none of those things? Just an unwitting victim of fate and destiny?
Castiel had led the assault on hell, in order to save the righteous man and prevent the first seal of the apocalypse from being broken, lest hell should be allowed to reign on earth. In the aftermath of his disastrous mission, he is being held captive by Alastair, and his image is being used in a final, determined attempt to break Dean.
But the profound bond that Castiel feels towards the pure soul won’t allow him to go down without a fight, and he makes a desperate prayer to his very old friend to set in motion a chain of events that might save him and his beloved mortal, or possibly, doom them for all eternity.

Boy King!Sam fic I highly recommend:
And So Awakens Devils by Concernedlily (Sam/Dean, 58k+)
Tumblr media
"He doesn’t have the first clue – how do you even start to process something like that? Yeah, Sam seems different to him now, erratic and weird and wielding his power over these demons more easily than Dean likes to see, but he hasn’t seemed evil. Dean doesn’t know how to fix that up, finally, with the certain knowledge that he’s done – is doing – evil things. Back in Boston, he’d been able to kid himself that maybe Sam was sitting around somewhere giving orders to get things done but turning a blind eye to how, and that would have been bad, but not as bad as learning that his hands are dripping in blood, that he’s personally given the orders for who’s got to die and when, if not going out there and doing it himself. He has no idea how Sam is working this out in his head, how he’s making it okay to himself."
Tumblr media
Posted all the way back on 12/31/2007, this fanfic deals with Sam literally ending the world and ushering the apocalypse to bring Dean back from Hell. This story has that delicious flavor of the early seasons, perfect characterization, and a Sam that’s just so hopelessly down a dark path. Oh, and Sam’s so stupidly in love with Dean. Absolutely lovely. Dean here is just trying to make the best of the fucked up world around him. Their romance floats from bromance to romance in a way that’s organic and realistic. You have to read this one!

Demons and Demigods Part Nine: Written Scene #5: Ruby vs. One Pissed Off Mom
More Sally, Paul, Sam, and Dean content! With bonus bamf Sally because I love her. Also, this has some hand-wavey bits but it's mostly a fully written scene, so enjoy!
Sally, back at home, was sick with worry. She hadn’t gotten an Iris Message from Percy or Annabeth in months and she was terrified that something had happened to them and no one would tell her.
She called Dean and Sam, to ask if they’d run into the seven in their time on the road, and when they told her they hadn’t seen them since their chance meeting in Kansas a couple months ago, she broke down sobbing. Paul wrapped an arm around her shoulders and took the phone from her, putting it on speaker. Dean promised that they would be on the lookout for any signs and keep an ear open for any mention. Paul thanked them and asked if they’d be willing to swing by sometime soon, Sally would surely appreciate seeing them.
The boys arrive in NYC and there’s still nothing from Percy or Annabeth or any of the other Seven or demigods that Sally knows. She reached out to Chiron, Thalia, and Grover to see if they’d heard anything at all, but they were all just as in the dark as her. Desperate, Sally prayed to Poseidon, begging him to send her some sign that their son was still alive out there, to tell her if something had happened to him. But there was no answer. She had known that there would be none, had believed Annabeth when she said that the gods had closed themselves off from the world all those months ago, but she had foolishly let herself hope that maybe her prayers and the love she knew Poseidon had for their son would be enough to break through whatever was going on with the gods to him.
Anyway, Paul is still on paid leave and him and Sally and Sam and Dean are all at the Jackson-Blofis apartment trying to figure out what happened that made Annabeth and Percy stop IMing with no warning, and then one of Paul’s teacher friends and her wife come knocking on the door with a tray of cookies to check in on them. Paul invites them in and if they are startled by the two rugged male models sitting in the living room talking with Sally, neither of them says anything. Sally greets them and introduces Sam and Dean as her nephews who are P.I.s helping them look for Percy and the teacher and her wife are pleasant as can be, ask if there’s been any news and say that they hope they hear something soon, they know it’s hard not knowing if your child is safe.
They stay and chat for a while, asking for stories about Percy and listening intently to every story that Sally and Paul tell. Sam and Dean do, too, excited to hear stories of what their little cousin is like when not on deadly quests where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. They also listen for instances where the story seemed to be sanitized for mortal ears and make mental notes to ask for the real story later.
Once the teacher and her wife left, however, another random woman appeared in the living room. No one jumps, per say, but Sam and Dean both reach for the guns tucked into their waistbands and Sally grabs for the celestial bronze knife she’s taken to hiding in her boot as Paul tries to sneak toward the wooden baseball bat in the corner.
“I thought they’d never leave,” the woman said dryly, and Sam and Dean lower their weapons with simultaneous groans. “You know, the company you boys are keeping these days makes it really hard to talk to you.”
“Sally, Paul, this is Ruby,” Dean said, distaste clear in his voice. “She’s a demon.”
Paul’s eyes widened and he inched backward, shooting a glance at Sally. Sally narrowed her eyes and kept her knife in her hand, though she didn’t say anything.
“She’s, well, maybe not a friend, but she’s not an enemy,” Sam tried to placate her. Dean rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, but only because she’s weirdly obsessed with you.”
“Look, if you don’t want to hear what I came to say, fine, I’ll leave,” Ruby snarled. “I just thought that since you’ve been sticking your noses in Greek business, you’d want to know that I heard something. But I guess you’re not interested, so maybe I’ll take my knowledge somewhere else.”
“Wait!” Sally cried as Ruby turned to leave. “What do you mean?”
Ruby laughed and turned back around to scrutinize Sally with a raised eyebrow. “You know, I’ve heard about you, Sally Campbell, or, sorry, what did you change it to, Jackson? The higher ups had big plans for you, you know. Just like they did for Mary. Of course, you had to go and ruin them by shacking up with a Greek god, making you and your son untouchable.” Ruby shook her head. “A shame, really. If the Greeks weren’t so anal about inter-pantheon mingling, your son could have been extraordinary.”
“Enough, Ruby. Tell us what you heard or fuck off.” Dean growled.
Ruby clicked her tongue and wagged her finger at him disapprovingly. “Now, Dean, is that anyway to ask a friend for help?”
“Ruby, please,” Sam butted in, gesturing for Dean to leave it. “What did you hear?”
“Thank you, Sammy,” Ruby said, and Sam had to bite back his retort that only family was allowed to call him that. “See, Dean? That’s the way to get a girl to open up.” She sauntered over and plopped herself down in Sam’s lap, wrapping her arms around his neck and playing with his hair. “There’s a rumor going around,” she said casually. “I thought it might be of interest to you.”
“Spit it out already, you black-eyed bitch. Or did you just want to waste our time?” Dean grit out through clenched teeth.
“Sammy, I don’t like the way your brother keeps talking to me. I don’t think I want to tell you, anymore,” Ruby pouted, looking up at Sam with an exaggeratedly hurt expression. “I want an apology.”
Sam fought to keep his face neutral. “Dean’s sorry, Ruby,” he ground out.
She shook her head. “I want to hear him say it,” she smirked over at Dean, who was practically fuming. “Make him tell me he’s sorry, and then I’ll tell you what I heard.” She tucked her head into the crook of Sam’s neck and smiled sweetly.
Sam gave Dean a pleading look. Dean took a couple deep breaths, trying to quell his steadily rising rage, before opening his mouth, but Sally, it appeared, had had more than enough and decided to take matters into her own hands.
Sally was a blur, appearing at Sam’s side in an instant and grabbing a fistful of Ruby’s hair to yank her off Sam’s lap and throw her to the floor. Before anyone could react, Sally had Ruby pinned underneath her and her celestial bronze dagger hovering just above Ruby’s throat.
“Tell me what you know about my son right now or so help me God we will see just what celestial bronze does to demons. I can’t imagine it’s pretty,” Sally snarled.
Dean, Sam, and Paul all stared at her in shock and a healthy bit of awe. (Paul thought he probably should not have found that as attractive as he did.)
Ruby stayed silent, and Sally lowered her knife until it just barely sank harmlessly through the skin of the mortal Ruby was possessing and Ruby let out a scream that Sally quickly muffled with a hand over her mouth. Sally lifted the knife and waited for Ruby stop screaming before removing her hand.
Ruby panted harshly.
“Talk. Now.”
“S-some big shot demons have been real chipper lately, which is unusual for demons. I heard a few of them talking about it. One of them said ‘the son of the sea and wisdom’s daughter fell.’” Ruby gasped.
“The hell do you mean, ‘fell’?” Dean demanded. “Are you saying they died?”
Sally tightened her grip on Ruby and twitched the knife downward again.
“No!” Ruby cried. “At least, I don’t think so! Demigods die all the time, Greek or otherwise. I doubt demons would be so giddy about two more demigods they’re not allowed to touch biting it.” She rolled her eyes, then flinched when Sally made a low noise in the back of her throat. “Look, I’m not sure, exactly, okay? But I think-I think they meant that two demigods fell into the Pit.”
“The Pit,” Dean said slowly, not entirely sure what Ruby meant.
Sally gasped and sat back on her heels, dropping her knife to the floor and clapping her shaking hand over her mouth. “You don’t mean—” she said weakly.
Ruby nodded.
“Oh gods,” Sally gasped, and her eyes filled with tears. Paul rushed forward to kneel beside her.
“Sally, what-what is it? What’s the Pit?” he asked, voice shaking.
She sobbed and shook her head, unable to speak.
Sam’s eyes widened in realization. “Tartarus. You mean Tartarus,” he breathed.
“Based on all this, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that’s really bad,” Dean said. “What the hell is Tartarus?”
“It is Hell,” Ruby said, sitting up now that Paul had moved Sally back to the couch. “The Greeks’ creation myth is a bit of a convoluted one, but essentially, there was nothing but Chaos, at first. And then Chaos made the Primordials. Gaea is the earth, she is nature and living things. Over the earth was created a dome, which became the sky and Gaea’s husband, Ouranos. Another dome was created beneath the earth, called Tartarus, the Pit of Damnation. Gaea and Ouranos had children together, and those children were the Titans. But Ouranos grew cruel, so Gaea convinced her children to help her trick him. They brought him down to earth, away from his element so he’d be weak. Their youngest son wielded his father’s scythe and, as his four brothers held their father down, chopped Ouranos into tiny pieces and scattered them into the Pit so that he would never again be able to take on a physical body. The Titans later had their own children, the Gods. When the Gods brought the same fate upon their father Kronos as she and her children had upon Ouranos, Gaea grew furious, and bore a new race of children with Tartarus called the Giants. One Giant was born to oppose each of the twelve Olympian Gods. The Giants were bigger, stronger, and meaner than anything that came before them. Eventually, however, they, too, were cast into Tartarus as their eternal prison, and Gaea fell into a deep sleep, exhausted and depressed as all her family was locked away. But now, Gaea is waking, and the Giants are rising to help her. They are ruthless and will stop at nothing to reawaken their mother. But I’m getting off track. Tartarus himself is the Pit. He is the place Greek monsters go to reform when they are killed. His is the very essence of evil. The air is like acid and the ground shard of glass. The very environment down there is meant for suffering. If two demigods have indeed fallen into the Pit, then the air will poison them as they breathe, stop their wounds from healing. Every step will leave them weaker than the last. There is no escape for demigods from the Pit. They will wander, slowly dying, hunted by every monster they have ever killed, every horror ever spoken of in Greek myth, until they cannot carry on, and they give up. Until a monster finally gets the better of them or they simply lay down and wait to die. Their bodies will rot down there, will become carrion for hungry monsters on their way back to the surface. Their souls will be trapped in eternal agony, unable to rest or find peace as they continue to wander endlessly through hell. After long enough, they might change into monsters themselves. If they’re smart, they’ll throw themselves into one of the rivers of the Underworld and pray that the waters dissolve their sense of self.” Ruby smirked, then. “I hear that the Styx would be good for that.”
Sally screamed in outrage and lunged for Ruby, wrapping her hands around the demon’s throat, but Ruby just opened her mouth and black smoke poured out, leaving an empty vessel on the floor.
Sally sobbed.
Paul held her close and cried silently into her crown.
Sam and Dean looked at each other in horror before moving simultaneously to kneel beside Sally and Paul on the floor.
“Hey,” Dean said softly, laying a hand on his aunt’s shoulder. “Percy and Annabeth are strong. They’re also insanely smart and from what I hear, have a habit of surviving the impossible to survive. They’ll find a way out.”
“Yeah,” Sam said, nodding. “They said something about the Doors of Death being chained and having to free them. As terrifying as it is, I bet those Doors are chained in the Pit and I bet that Percy and Annabeth know it. They’re probably on their way there to free the Doors and use them to escape as we speak. You just have to trust that they will find their way back to us, to you.”
Sally breathed shakily as she tried to calm down and nodded slowly. “You’re right,” she said and sniffed. “I have faith that they will make it home. And I will be ready to support them and help them heal when they do,” she said firmly.
“We all will,” Paul promised. “Whatever they need.”
Okay, so I'm not the happiest with Ruby's rendition of the Greek creation myth and so-on, and I am well aware that I got carried away there and it's not all that accurate, but whatever. Please just roll with it. Bask in the glory of bamf Sally instead of thinking about that spiel too hard, okay?

For the Suncaptor Birthday Event
Happy Birthday! Have some Sam and Lucifer.
“How did you think this was gonna end?”
The moment Sam left Lucifer behind.
The thin, jagged crack of light hovers undulating in the air in a beckoning dance, promising sanctuary on the other side. All of the people Sam and Dean have brought to the fissure between worlds—Mom, Jack, the remnants of human freedom fighters barely hanging on against the tyranny of angels who reduced this Earth to ash—they’ve made it through. They’re free, they’re safe, Sam has done what he had set out to do. But there’s one last thing remaining. Sam watches Dean disappear through the breach and turns to face Lucifer as he approaches, then blocks his path, pushing a hand against the archangel’s chest.
“Sam, what are you doing, man? I’m hurt. Please.”
Sam wants to laugh at the hypocritical plea from the monster who never before showed Sam an ounce of the sympathy he’s expecting now. Nearly two centuries of confinement together gave Lucifer unhindered access to Sam’s innermost thoughts, and he knows how to take advantage of Sam’s propensity to forgive those who seek redemption, knows how to exploit Sam’s instinctive compassion, twisting it to his own ends. But nearly two centuries of confinement together also gave Sam more insight into Lucifer than the archangel is willing to admit. The Devil puts on a good act, Sam will grant him that, and if anyone else were watching they might fall for it, think less of Sam for what he’s about to do, judge him harshly for his treatment of the pathetic creature before him. But Lucifer’s façade of good will wouldn’t fool anyone who has seen Lucifer’s true face, the one he keeps hidden away behind his vessel. The one he lets out to fuel the nightmares of his victims, to torment them in his absence. The one he displays as a reminder that they will never be free of him.
The performance doesn’t fool Sam. “How did you think this was gonna end?”
Sam shoves.
Despite his professed injury and weakness, Lucifer is still an archangel, still possesses raw archangel strength, and is nowhere near as fragile as he would have Sam believe. So Sam puts every memory of the Cage, every moment of anguish, every second of despair into that shove. Every searing burn, every jagged slice, every crushed bone, every torn sinew, every ruptured organ. Every peal of laughter from Lucifer’s delight at his agony. Every falsely proffered mercy taken away, every drop of hope obliterated. Everything Lucifer did to him and the joy he took in doing it, it all goes into that shove.
Lucifer goes down, stunned.
All traces of the archangel’s arrogance drain from his expression. The memory of his true face, a presence that has stalked Sam through every waking moment and in every heart pounding nightmare, diminishes from a visage of overwhelming terror into a pitiful, buffoonish caricature. In that moment, Sam knows that Lucifer has already done the worst he will ever be able do to him, yet Sam is the one left standing. He is the one who stands between Lucifer and what he so desperately wants, and there’s not a damned thing the archangel can do about it.
Sam gazes steadily into Lucifer’s eyes and sees in them an awakening realization, a reluctant bud opening to the dawn light. One hundred and eighty years of burrowing through Sam’s mind, defiling every thought, corrupting every memory, had the archangel assured of his hold over Sam, convinced that he had plumbed the depths of every corner and knew everything that could be known. It’s only now that Lucifer sees the truth, that what he thought he knew was only a persona he’d created for Sam, crafted for him in the Cage, torturing and twisting and reshaping Sam until he was pliant enough to be forced into a mold of conditioned responses. As Sam looms over him now, Lucifer’s eyes betray the epiphany. In his hubris, he thought he'd broken Sam, made him into puppet bound to his will. But it wasn’t Sam that broke; it was the suffocating coffin that Lucifer had constructed to hold Sam a prisoner of his fear that shattered. Had Lucifer known Sam at all, he would have known that a cage of despair couldn’t keep Sam contained forever. He would have known that Sam would turn it into a cocoon.
Sam turns his back on Lucifer, shrugs off the shredded remnants of subjugation that had encased him. Leaves the shadow that has haunted him for years on the ground behind him, powerless. Impotent. He steps through the fissure just as the light begins to flicker and takes a deep breath on the other side as the rift seals behind him.
He’s safe. He’s free.
