Texas' Balcones Distilling celebrates 15 years with the release of Cataleja Texas Single Malt

WACO, Texas ... As a leader at the forefront of the whisky revolution in Texas, Balcones Distilling is proudly unveiling a new single malt whisky in celebration of their 15-Year Anniversary: Cataleja Texas Single Malt.

As the American Single Malt category continues to explode, with year-over-year sales growing at a remarkable double-digit rate1, Cataleja Texas Single Malt emerges as a symbol of the innovative spirit that has been the bedrock of this booming new category. 

"Cataleja Texas Single Malt is one of the most complex and unique whiskies we've made. It's a testament to the Balcones commitment to exploration, experimentation, and an unyielding dedication to our craft," said Jared Himstedt, head distiller at Balcones Distilling. "We each had our own vision of Cataleja, what it might become, and its individual character. Even now that it's here, it's more distinctive than we imagined. This process showcases our continued commitment to engaging with our whisky in a meaningful way to create unique, expressive flavors."

Made with 100% Golden Promise Malted Barley, this single malt began its maturation journey in barrels previously used to age Kentucky bourbon, and after three years of the Texas climate's concentrating effects, was transferred into decommissioned Sherry Solera casks that were meticulously hand-selected from various Spanish bodegas (wine cellars): Moscatel, Amontillado Dulce, Oloroso and Palo Cortado. Because the first fill showcased the wonderfully high impact of the 80+ year old casks, the whisky was transferred back into neutral barrels and then followed with two additional rounds of refill single malts through the decommissioned casks, as they continued to provide sherry impact alongside the delicate malt character.

"Cataleja Texas Single Malt is an ode to whisky makers of the past - it is our way of honoring the makers who've come before us and using the best of the techniques and the ingredients that they had at their disposal," said Himstedt. "This complex whisky not only pays homage to the pioneers who have inspired us, but it also embraces the relentless pursuit of crafting something uniquely its own."

For those that are 21 years or older, Cataleja Texas Single Malt has an SRP of $125 and will be available to purchase for a limited time only at select U.S. liquor retailers in Texas, California, Illinois, Colorado, New York and Florida, and can be pre-ordered on ReserveBar.com. The limited release will be available starting this month, but Balcones will also be offering a first taste for all guests at its 15th Anniversary celebration this Saturday, October 28, at the Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas.

Balcones Distilling moved into a brand-new modern whisky distillery in Waco, Texas in 2016, leaving behind its home in an old welding shop under the 17th Street Bridge a few blocks away. Head Distiller Jared Himstedt helped build the original distillery, and took us back for a tour of the largely hand-built distillery that helped Balcones make its name. We’ll also get a look inside the new state of the art distillery as well.

I dunno what to call this but it just might be my favourite drink after my modified paloma (Desert Door sotol, Texas red grapefruit cordial, ice, sparklin water). This here's got ice and layers of one ounce (ish) Violet Crown elderflower liqueur, one ounce (ish) of passionfruit syrup, and one ounce (ish) of Balcones Rumble (a distilled fig liqueur that tastes like a combination of scotch and barrel aged dark rum, with a hint of cognac), all topped with sparklin water.

It's fruity and boozy and floral and aromatic all at the same time. Perfect for loungin poolside with a plate of crab rangoons :9

🇬🇧Hey guys! How's it going?🙂. . It's finally the weekend and for another review. This time we have another nice surprise from Balcones, it's the Texas Rye 100 proof! 😊. . This is a lovely rye whiskey from 2019 master distiller of the year at Icons of Whisky America, Jared Himstedt. Now if you follow what's happening over at the Balcones distillery, you know that they are not your ordinary American whisky makers. I'm planning to write an article about these guys, so stay tuned. . Right so back to the review:. . Nose: Chocolate coated rye, hot cocoa, young oak and orange zest along with a hint of salted caramel, malted grains, and a touch of smoke. So we're off to a delicious start. . Palate: A flavor-rich spicy mouthfeel, prominent cocoa, coffee, orange zest, melted dak chocolate, sweet malt (honey) and a pinch of tobacco. . Finish: Long, dry, with peanutbutter, which ads to the dryness. Cocoa powder, burnt sugar and dark caramel chocolate. . This is a very unusual rye in my book, but a very good unusual, this is excellent whisky 😉. . Have you guys tried this one yet? What did you think about it?🙂. . ZZ TOP publica nueva grabación de su mítica canción "LA GRANGE" (con la formación original). Segundo anticipo del próximo álbum “RAW”

ZZ Top anticipan segundo single de su nuevo álbum ‘RAW’, el nuevo álbum del legendario grupo tejano que se publicará el 22 de Julio por Shelter Records/BMG. Este nuevo single es la mítica “La Grange” y, como las otras 11 canciones del álbum, se grabaron en el salón de baile más antiguo de Texas, el Gruene Hall en New Braunfels, TX. El lugar histórico que data de 1878 y ha estado en uso desde entonces.

Las canciones que aparecerán en ‘RAW’, incluida esta nueva versión de "La Grange", se grabaron durante un solo día, fijando el objetivo de mantener todo el proceso lo más simple, directo y “crudo” posible, un guiño a los primeros años de la banda. Billy F Gibbons ejerce como productor con Jake Mann y Gary Moon de ingenieros. ‘RAW’ fue mezclado por Ryan Hewitt. El álbum estará disponible en vinilo de 180 gramos (diferentes colores), CD y a través de plataformas digitales y evidentemente, se lanzará “En memoria del añorado bajista de la banda; Dusty Hill”.

“LA GRANGE” – HISTORIA DE LA MÍTICA CANCIÓN

"La Grange" es uno de los sellos distintivos de ZZ Top, que se publicó por primera vez en 1973 como parte de su revolucionario álbum ‘Tres Hombres’. Como single, fue el lanzamiento más exitoso que la banda había experimentado hasta ese momento y se convertiría en una canción emblemática para el grupo durante casi cinco décadas. Sin duda, una canción que es historia del Rock And Roll.

La canción es una especie de homenaje a "The Chicken Ranch", un burdel que estaba ubicado en la ciudad de La Grange, a solo 88 millas de New Braunfels. “La Grange” anticipó la historia, escrita por Larry L. King, que sirvió de base para el musical de Broadway “The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas”. La versión cinematográfica la protagonizó Dolly Parton como Mona Stangley, interpretando a la propietaria del célebre establecimiento.

El difunto Dusty Hill comentó en aquella época: “Poco después de que se lanzó el disco, lo cerraron, y yo estuve mucho tiempo en Texas, explicando a la gente que no teníamos nada que ver con eso”.

Billy Gibbons añadió: "Ese lugar fue el escenario de muchos ritos de iniciación” y agregó: "La frase final, 'Pero podría estar equivocado', está inspirada en 'Peggy Sue Got Married'” del también tejano Buddy Holly, considerado uno de los creadores del Rock And Roll.

El lanzamiento del álbum ‘RAW' servirá para iniciar la nueva gira “RAW WHISKEY TOUR” de ZZ Top.
