Snowstorms and Spiked Cocoa (Leah Williamson x Reader)

Day 12! I am not so sure about this one but it turned out okay I think. Sometimes I struggle to word things how I want to.

The snow had started as a gentle dusting that morning, swirling softly outside the windows as you and Leah sipped on coffee, watching the grey sky grow brighter. It was cozy inside her apartment, and the two of you had planned to run some errands and maybe grab lunch after the snow settled. But by noon, the light snowfall turned heavy, thick blankets of white covering the streets outside and so those plans would need to change.

Leah peered out the window, squinting as if that would change the forecast. “We’re not going anywhere, are we?” she asked, turning to you with a wry smile.

You laughed, wrapping your arms around her shoulders. “Not unless you have a sled hidden somewhere. And clothes that are ten times warmer than these.” You said whilst tugging at her thinner cotton pyjamas she was currently wearing.

Leah pulled you close, a playful grin on her face as she slapped away your tugging hand. “Well, guess we’re in for the long haul,” she murmured, nodding toward the couch. “So how about we make the most of it?”

Within a few minutes, you’d transformed the living room into a winter sanctuary. The two of you grabbed all the warm blankets you could find, piling them on the couch and adding a few extra pillows. Leah even lit some candles, their warm glow casting a golden hue across the room, mixing with the white glow of the snowy world outside.

“What’s a snow day without some hot chocolate?” Leah said, her tone already daring you to disagree.

You grinned, standing up. “Add a splash of something special?”

She raised her eyebrows in approval. “Absolutely.”

A quick trip to the kitchen later, you returned with two steaming mugs of hot cocoa, each topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, with a generous splash of Baileys added in for good measure. You handed Leah her mug and snuggled next to her on the couch as she scrolled through the holiday movie options.

She held up the remote, looking between you and the screen. “So, where should we start? Classics, rom-coms, or those cheesy made-for-TV movies?”

You feigned a thoughtful expression. “I say we go for the classics first. Home Alone?”

Leah’s eyes sparkled, and she eagerly selected the movie. “Good choice,” she said, grinning. “I’ve been quoting Kevin McCallister since I was a kid. Bet I know every line.” Even though she said it jovially, you knew secretly she was competitive enough to believe this.

As the opening credits rolled, you wrapped yourself in the blanket and leaned into her, the warmth of the cocoa, the Baileys and Leah’s arm around you making you feel entirely content with the change of plans. For a while, you just enjoyed the movie, laughing at the iconic scenes and quoting lines along with her. Every time a new trap was set, Leah gasped dramatically, elbowing you with exaggerated shock as if she was watching it for the first time and didn’t know that was what was going to happen.

“Look at him,” she said, laughing as Kevin outsmarted the burglars again. “Kid’s a genius. I’d be terrible at setting traps. My version would probably be me just hiding under a blanket hoping for the best.” You snorted, picturing it.

When the movie ended, you took a break to stretch and grab some popcorn. You handed her the bowl as you settled back in, scrolling through the lineup. “What’s next? Feeling more nostalgia or something cheesy?”

Leah’s eyes lit up mischievously. “Oh, cheesy, definitely. Let’s go for one of those Christmas rom-coms.”

She selected a feel-good holiday romance where the characters predictably met under a snow-covered tree in the city centre and exchanged longing looks with holiday lights twinkling in the background.

“Alright, you’re going to have to try really hard not to laugh through this,” you warned her, already grinning.

“Oh, I’m ready,” Leah said, nodding with mock seriousness. But just a few minutes in, you both were struggling to keep it together, pointing out the clichés and over-the-top scenes. Every time one of the characters had a “holiday epiphany,” Leah nudged you, trying her best to keep a straight face.

“So, wait,” Leah said, pausing the movie and turning her body to face you which was tricky as you were pretty much laying on top of her. “This girl just runs into a guy who’s conveniently single, successful, loves Christmas, and has nothing else going on?”

You nodded, rolling your eyes dramatically. “Of course! Isn’t that how life works?”

She laughed, shaking her head. “And all she has to do is realize her true feelings right before Christmas Eve? That’s it?”

“Exactly,” you said, holding up your mug. “Holiday magic.”

She shook her head, still laughing. “Unbelievable. It’s… it’s so bad that it’s so so good!”

The storm raged on outside, but you barely noticed, wrapped up together in the warm bubble you’d created. Each movie you chose brought its own little bit of holiday spirit, and between the cocoa and the cozy blankets, time seemed to drift by peacefully. By the time you’d watched a few more, the light outside had begun to dim, casting the snow-covered world into soft shadows.

Leah reached over to grab another blanket, wrapping it around both of you as she leaned in close. “Best snow day ever,” she murmured, her eyes soft and full of warmth as she looked at you. “I can’t remember the last time I just slowed down like this. Took a day to do nothing at all and not had an issue pop up because of it.”

You placed a soft kiss on her cheek before pressing another to her lips when she puckered them at you. “I love it too. I feel like we never get this kind of time together, just the two of us, no distractions, no interruptions.”

She smiled, her fingers intertwining with yours. “You’re right. It’s nice to not have anything pulling us away for once.”

As she hit play on the next movie, this time a comedy that neither of you had seen before, you snuggled even closer together. Determined to make the most of the quiet time and the warmth you had created throughout the day. Every so often, Leah would mutter something funny about a scene, or you’d giggle as she made faces at the overdramatic dialogue. It was like a little bubble of holiday festivities, untouched by the world outside and the normally full calendar.

Halfway through, you took her hand, lacing your fingers through hers. She looked down at your intertwined hands and gave your fingers a gentle squeeze.

“Let’s make this a tradition,” she said softly. “You, me, maybe snow, and every Christmas movie we can handle.” You didn’t live in a place you could rely on snow, in fact you were kind of lucky to get it this year.

You grinned, resting your head on her shoulder. “Deal. Only if we add in our famous hot cocoa with a little extra kick.”

Leah laughed, taking a sip from her mug. “Always,” she promised.

When the final credits rolled, Leah didn’t move to select another movie. Instead, she just sat there, her head resting against yours, her breath soft and steady.

“Thank you for today,” she whispered, breaking the quiet. “I didn’t know how much I needed this.”

You turned to her, feeling a warmth that went beyond the blankets, the cocoa and the alcohol. “Thank you for making it so wonderful.”

Scream:What if?

Was discussing with a friend about What What If scenarios would be perfect for Scream. Here is what I'd like to see the most

What if the big fan theory that Dewey was the third killer in Scream was true and showed his true colors in Scream 3, with Jennifer as his accomplice(in this version Jennifer is someone Gale fucked over to get the Woodsboro reporter gig) and Dewey's motive is that he was the town's joke and he helped Billy and Stu so he could be seen as the hero and he killed Tatum because he couldn't stand being mocked by her and truly he had an obsessive love with SIdney and wanted her all to himself.

What if Tatum lived. What I see happening is, she gets out of the garage just before she dies a horrible death. She lost some blood, so she's woozy. She runs into Dewey and Gale. "Dewey, help" So I could foresee Dewey and Gale arriving at the party sooner and stopping Billy and Stu before things escalate to the way they do. Maybe they arrest Stu and kill Billy. Tatum lives and gets to appear in Scream 2. She, Sidney and Hallie are besties. I could see Tatum being apart of that Sorority house trying to recruit SIdney and convincing Sid to join. Tatum is very wary around Derek. But also Mickey. Mickey would kill Tatum. I can't see her surviving past 2.

What if Angelina was the second killer in Scream 3. Cutting this plotline could've fixed SO MANY things. The script also delves further into the original plan, showing she was intended to be a former classmate of Sidney from Woodsboro, originally named Angie Crick. Her motivation was stated as idolizing Sidney and wanting her fame and attention, thus taking on the role of Sidney in the third Stab film. So, proto-Jill. But I would've made her obsessed with Sidney. Make her a psycho stalker. Sending her creepy letters before she was allowed to call her as Ghostface. She wants the fame sure, but she wants to become Sidney, even if it means killing Sidney and Roman just to make it out alive.

What if Williamson's original Scream 3 happened

What if the planned Jill Scream 5 movie happened. The gist is the hospital wasn't supposed to be where the movie ended. Jill would've gotten away with it and Sidney would've been in a coma and everyone would believe in the lie that Jill crafted. Jill would be in college and her life is turned upside down. Ghostface has returned and Ghostface plans to reveal her dark secret and ruin her life. That's what we know about the original plan. Here's my idea for what it could've been. My pitch for who this Ghostface could've been? Kirby. Kirby wouldn't kill anyone. It would be like the Scream 3 script where no one was killed, they were all in on it to expose Jill and Kirby's partner? SIDNEY

What if Judy and Wes Hicks were the killers in Scream 5

The many deaths of Sidney Prescott. Basically all the times Sidney could've died. Death by the hands of Billy or Stu, by Mickey's hand, Nancy Loomis having her revenge, Roman's revenge or Jill getting away with it, Richie succeeding and finishing his movie or the Kirsch family killing everyone in New York and hunting down SIdney and killing her and her family like they threatened in the original script

What if Sidney appeared in Scream 6. Sidney had bits and pieces in the original script. A conversation with Gale and Bailey's plans on what he wanted to do to Sidney. So if Sidney did appear, I think Sidney would've came to the rescue and wound Bailey while Sam finishes the job. That's the best I could come up with

What if Tara and Amber were Ghostfaces and girlfriends. Tara's motive would be Sam left her. Her father left her. Her mother is a drunken whore and Wes was obsessed with her and the only guy she liked was stolen from her. Her life was shit and it started the moment that Sam left her. Amber was Tara's girlfriend and helped Tara with her revenge on Sam, her friends and the whole shitty hand life dealt her. But most importantly Tara just wanted Sam's love and to be apart of her life and if becoming a killer is the only way she can be close to Billy Loomis' daughter, so be it.

What if Nancy raised Sam

What if VInce Schneider was the killer instead of Richie?

What if Sidney was the killer. What if Sidney was tired of her mom being the town pariah and took matters into her own hands. She finds Maureen already dying due to her wounds at the hands of Billy. But Sidney finishes the job. When Billy thinks he's about to kill SIdney, she reveals the truth and all he can do is smile. "We're like Mickey and Mallory" When Gale thinks she's saving Sidney, Sidney kills her and then kills Stu and paints him as the killer. Billy and Sidney get away with it. Sidney kills Christina and they raise Sam together.

What if Stu is really alive and the mastermind behind the new trilogy trilogy. Okay I don't buy into this shit, but let's say for arguement sake. Stu survived. He was taken to prison and was about to be executed, only one day, another Ghostface killing spree happens and Stu pulls a Ted Bundy and decides to help because he was Ghostface and would help catch them. This goes on to Ghostfaces to ordinary murderers. And one day. Stu gets out. He develops a masterplan. Indoctrinate today's youth and turn them into a Ghostface cult. Richie would be his figurehead while he manipulates from the shadows. However one day he just HAS to act. It's Stu who kills Dewey. "It's been an honor." He decides to let Richie's family have some fun. But Scream 7 is where Stu reveals himself and his cult. His partner in this? His sister Leslie, Leslie is only in it to avenge her son, whom she blames Sam and Tara for Amber's actions. Making coordinated attacks to kill those close to the Core 4, Gale, Kirby and Sidney. When Sidney is out in the open, that's when Stu will strike.

this is just a little collection of explanations about where my characters currently are physically, emotionally, career-wise, etc. it's mainly for me to keep myself straight with my ideas and their development but uhhh also to make sense if i drop any of it in a post. that's all ! read or don't read at your discretion ! don't matter to me.

i really don’t imagine his life changes much from day to day to be totally honest………. there is nothing new happening in his life he’s still just being a menace upon new york and giving people sick ass tattoos.

*˖ ⊹ ──────── brady ackerman.

he’s been wound up in a lot of different projects and probably running himself into overdraft; busy filming the next season of his show, and also alongside it trying to finish out a manuscript for the next book he’s supposed to be writing, all while flying all over the world in just a handful of weeks. hasn’t touched down in new york for more than a few days in the past 2 months but hey at least he’s successful right. right guys. right. haha. he's not tired at all. don't look at his dark circles for too long.

christmas is a pretty big time for his little side gig selling rare records online, so that picked up quite a bit even as his music lessons kind of trailed off as kids went off on winter holiday. it’s also just been rly quiet for him because obviously christmas didn’t go very well as family dinners never really go well at the willamson/michaelson house and then luvena has been either away or rotting in her room so there’s not really been much for him to do if levi and trinity arealso preoccupied (with each other? idk i dont god mod 👀. ) he did do a really successful new years eve show i think that he’s proud of but mainly it’s just been his little side hustle and now as lessons are picking back up.

so clem is still in the process/paperwork of buying the diner, all the bank loans and everything like that but she is now effectively in charge of it which has definitely been ! a big deal ! her and loren moved into a new apartment and clem has yet to even unpack most of her boxes because she’s spending a lot of time at the diner going over all the financials and trying to teach herself how to handle the back end of a business instead of just the front half. it’s A Lot and she’s definitely Stressed and crying a lot and everyone has been getting 3am baked thumb print cookies, but don't even worry about her !

christmas is always the best but busiest time of year for retail so i imagine damien has been putting in a lot of extra effort to make sure that it’s special !! he did some big holiday toy drives alongside some local charities, but since the christmas rush has kind of fallen off and times are slower he’s now just trying to get through the pile of bookkeeping and administrative stuff that he needs to worry about. i have been playing with the idea of him running a very limited indie comic publishing thing out of the back office of his shop, having started with the one done by him & honey and now kind of expanding to artists who maybe don’t have the funds or ability to afford printing and stuff themselves but………… idk the logistics of that yet so it’s definitely just an idea in his head that’s in the early stages. he’s having fun with it. honestly he's having a great time.

again i don’t think his daily life has much variation. working security at a show venue a few evenings a week and still coaching the Youth ™ w/ boxing a few days a week�� sometimes he does do like 14 hour days which is a bit unfortunate and his schedule is all over the place which is bad for the brain that can barely remember what day it is on a good week but you know!!! his memory has been slightly improving thanks to all of the puzzles & all that stuff!!! so like good for him!!! go off king!!

again i just brought him here so i don’t really think things have been particularly outstanding in his life. just him and carmen doing their little school thing idk. he’s working as a TA in among all the other school stuff he’s doing i suppose.

lowkey i think she’s started dropping off from doing auditions all together… like she’s so bored of them, and getting anywhere in the snow and cold is rough, so while she hasn’t admitted it to anyone or even necessarily herself she’s just like. not been looking. kind of giving up on her dream but doesn’t want to admit that because then that means her parents were right. but like really she’s resigned herself to the bartending life. otherwise nothing new.

she’s been stuck in this hellish domestic civil lawsuit at the moment that’s eating up practically all of her spare time because the judge and the defense are assholes and she has gotten competitive about it, alongside all of her Daughter Responsibilities for her parents and their millions of holiday and new years parties. grace does nothing but work, eat, be miserable at charity dinners, work some more, and maybe sleep right now. that’s her whole social life.

construction is fairly seasonal work so while he’s still working he’s not as busy as he usually is, and also it’s winter and everything is depressing, so he’s definitely been deep into hermit “i haven’t seen you in a week” mode. especially with giselle kind of flying out to conferences and stuff there hasn’t been much reason for him to get out of his apartment. he’s in a Depression Era but hey ! it happens !

i think the news of eren’s diagnosis has had quite an effect on kal, especially having to keep it a secret from everyone and also because she doesn’t want as much support for it as he feels like he should be giving, so he’s slipping a little bit into old habits again and overworking himself into the ground so he doesn’t have to rly stop and think about what’s happening. double shifts and insomnia are back baby !!!!!!!!!

just came out of a period where he had a few different mural commissions going on all at the same time and he was much busier than he’s usually used to so now he is simply basking in the fact that he doesn’t have to worry about funds broke-ass artist bitch but also that he doesn’t have anything to do. just kind of vibing. fucking around with his art in his room. fucking around w/ gabriella’s emotions. you know how it is. no cares in the world for this guy.

around new years she had the opening of her studio !! so she’s been very busy, not really making art but she’s been spending a lot of her time at the gallery/studio. this is a really big change from her because she’s kind of lacked purpose or a project for a really long time that i imagine she’s just really happy and really excited ??? but also probably very daunted because she feels like she doesn’t belong or doesn’t have the skills to do it properly yano.

he took a little vacation time off since his work is also pretty seasonal to go back and visit his parents on the farm, but mostly his life has been no different except he’s been shovelling snow off the central park steps instead of just being a glorified gardener. honestly he’s pretty chill he doesn’t have the braincells to be anything except chill.

this bad boy went on tour !!! first it was america, and following that he did a few shows in europe & south america. he’s also been working on his next album in between, but he’s at a bit of a stand still with that one because he isn’t feeling ~ inspired ~ and he’s kind of groggy and thinks he’s sick all the time because all the travelling + the winter that he’s not really used to. drama queen never experienced seasonal depression before and hes getting a little taste of it.

i think wren is starting to actually reconsider the kinds of things she wants to do with her life and the degree she already has now… i think maybe she’s looking into online courses at other universities where she might be able to finish her masters but also is considering a career change totally… she’s been spending way more time on the roof with her telescope and getting excited about that stuff again as she heals, but definitely is still cautious,,, anyway she's been doing her research.

THE EXORCISM | Official Trailer, Images & Poster

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.

“The origins of the film stem from my childhood spent watching my father, Jason Miller, playing the doomed Father Karras flinging himself out a window at the climax of The Exorcist”, explains director/co-writer Joshua John Miller. “If that wasn’t haunting enough on its own, my dad never shied away from telling me stories of just how ‘cursed’ the movie was: the mysterious fires that plagued the production, the strange deaths, the lifelong injuries— the list went on and on. The lore of any ‘cursed film’ has captivated me ever since.”

He continued, “With The Exorcism, we wanted to update the possession movie formula (’Heroic man rescues woman from forces she’s too weak and simple to battle herself!’) for a world where no one group owns goodness and decency over another. We were gifted with an extraordinary cast and creative team to tell a story about how we’re all vulnerable to darkness, to perpetuating it, if we fail to face our demons.”

THE EXORCISM is directed by Joshua John Miller, screenplay by M.A. Fortin & Joshua John Miller and produced by Kevin Williamson, Ben Fast and Bill Block.

The devil may retaliate, but what other choice do we have?

Vertical will release THE EXORCISM in theaters on June 7th, 2024.

June is Black Music Month, and if you’re looking for music documentaries or series about your favorite artists, ABS has got you covered.

This week’s What to Watch list focuses solely on a variety of music-related movies and miniseries that highlight the contributions of Black musicians.

The music scene has definitely changed over the past few decades, but fans are always looking for unique or historical facts about their favorite artists. Spend time learning about their history, culture, and more.

If you’re looking to hear the two powerhouses go at it vocally, tune in to “Dreamgirls” and “The Fighting Temptations.” But if you need a laugh, check out the only Black “Annie” movie ever made, starring singer and actor Jamie Foxx.

Check out this list of series and documentaries to enjoy this weekend in honor of Black Music Month.

Amazon Prime

Dreamgirls (2006) Beyoncé also starred in the dazzling adaption of the Broadway musical about a 1960s girl group. She played Deena and Jennifer Hudson played Effie White, the latter for which Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The film also starred Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Loretta Devine, Danny Glover, and Anika Noni Rose as the group’s third member, Lorrell. The film details their development as artists and singers.

Respect (2021) In this autobiographical film, Hudson played the lead as the legendary Aretha Franklin. The movie documents her adolescent years singing in her father’s church choir to her rise to international fame. Marlon Wayans plays Franklin’s ex-husband and former manager, Ted White, and Mary J. Blige portrays vocalist Dinah Washington.

Ray (2004) Embattled actor Jamie Foxx portrays the life story and career of legendary R&B and blues musician Ray Charles. The biographical musical follows his impoverished beginnings in the South to touring under Jim Crow laws as a successful artist. He goes on to get married and have children, but his addiction to heroin never strayed too far away. After a series of arrests and a rehab stint, Charles regained his strength to make a brave comeback and enjoy decades of music success.

School Daze (1988) Spike Lee wrote and directed the musical comedy starring Laurence Fishburne, Tisha Campbell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jasmine Guy, and many others. The Morehouse graduate explored the socio-political and economic issues surrounding students at historically black colleges and universities.

The Fighting Temptations (2003) Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in this musical comedy about an ad executive who loses his job and leaves the Big Apple. He heads to Georgia to collect his aunt’s inheritance, where he leads a gospel choir to victory in a citywide competition. Other supporting cast members include LaTanya Richardson, Mike Epps, Chloe Bailey, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, Shirley Caesar, Ann Nesby and Angie Stone.

Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001) An oldie but goodie is this musical drama starring Beyoncé, Mekhi Phifer, Mos Def, Bow Wow, Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Fred Williamson, and more. A beautiful woman with a hypnotizing face and body can have any man she wants. She chooses a cop who loses his job after spending one night with her. They both end up on the run from the police, but the biggest dreamer doesn’t make it out alive.

Purple Rain (1984) Minneapolis native Prince plays a young artist with an abusive at-home living situation. The club singer creates a band to compete with a rival singer and explore new love. The film’s name is the same as the late singer’s sixth studio album.

The Wiz (1978) The beloved feature film includes an all-Black cast, compared to its original 1993 film starring Judy Garland in the lead role of Dorothy. In the musical drama, Diana Ross plays Dorothy, Michael Jackson plays the Scarecrow, Richard Pryor as the Wiz, Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man, and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion. They work together to get to overcome obstacles and meet their destinies at the end of the yellow brick road.

Tina Turner What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993) Two months before her passing, Tina Turner praised Angela Bassett’s portrayal of her in the biopic. It was based on Turner’s 1986 autobiography, “I, Tina: My Life Story,” and depicted her years of abuse during her marriage to her then-husband Ike Turner, played by Fishburne. Despite being the actress being snubbed an Oscar for her role, Turner said she felt “honored” by Bassett’s portrayal in the film.

The New Edition Story (2017) The three-part miniseries about the legendary R&B group begins with five childhood friends who become international sensations while growing up in Boston. As they quickly emerge into the spotlight, various obstacles strain their finances, friendship, and future. The film led to “The Bobby Brown Story.”

Black Nativity (2013) Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese, Jack Latimore, Jennifer Hudson, and more shocked fans with their vocals in their musical adaption of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play. In the all-Black cast film, a teen from Baltimore moves in with his estranged grandparents. Unhappy with their strict rules, he goes out into the street to find his own way.

Let It Shine (2012) This film’s cast includes a few veteran actors and a bevy of actors who are being given flowers. “Abottt Elementary” star Tyler James Williams plays Cyrus, a teenage rapper looking to impress Roxie, played by “ICU” singer and ‘Bel-Air” actress Coco Jones. He battles his nemesis under an alias and wins with a rhyme about his lady. Sadly, he gets no credit for it but ultimately wins Roxie’s heart.

Straight Outta Compton (2015) Based on a true story about the rap group N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton” sees six men in Compton, Los Angeles, who pushed the boundaries and revolutionized hip-hop culture with gritty rap lyrics and their dealings with Suge Knight. O’Shea Jackson Jr. stars as the younger version of his father Ice Cube in the biographical drama, alongside Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Brandon Lafourch to make up the famed group.

Hulu

Cadillac Records (2008) Cedric the Entertainer plays music artist Willie Dixon and is the narrator of the rock ’n’ roll film full of great acting and great music. It details the rise and fall of Chess Records, the Chicago blues label owned by a Polish immigrant played by Adrien Broady’s character Leonard Chess. He launched the careers of late great musicians such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Etta James, the latter of whom was portrayed by Beyoncé.

Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary (2016) This passionate story tells the portrait of an unconventional jazz musician whose music refined music and continues to impact, influence, and transform other people’s lives. It features more interviews and little anecdotes about his life with narration from Denzel Washington.

Summer Of Soul (2021) Questlove made his filmmaking debut after premiering this movie at the Sundance Film Festival. The music documentary features six weeks of footage taken in the summer of 1969 in the aftermath of Black Creativity and the civil rights movement. The classic concert film looks back at a group of blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ soul artists who performed at the Harlem Cultural Festival at Mount Morris Park. It includes performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Sly & The Family Stone, and more.

Get On Up (2014) Actor Chadwick Boseman portrayed the legendary James Brown in the biopic that explores Brown’s life, music, and presence on stages worldwide. It follows the music legend’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming of the most influential artists of the civil rights movement.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) This marks Boseman’s last movie before his unexpected passing. The new adaptation of August Wilson’s play tackles hard issues like race, art, and the exploitation of black artists in the 1920s. Viola Davis gave viewers a riveting performance as Ma Rainey, who never failed to hold back when she wasn’t satisfied with a song. Most of the film is recorded in a studio as she prepares to record new music for an album while clashing with white producers.

Sparkle (2012) Jordin Sparks made her feature film debut in this remake of the original 1976 film alongside industry vets like Derek Luke, Mike Epps, and the late singer Whitney Houston. She plays a child prodigy who sings in a group with her two sisters. Set in 1968, Detroit, the musical trio have hopes of signing a record, which seems far in the future due to one sister’s drug habit and Houston’s role as an over-protective mother. The “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer died in February 2012, months before the film was released in theaters. The original “Sparkle,” starring Lonette McKee and Irene Cara — also is available to stream, on Amazon Prime.

The Get Down (2016) The hip-hop-themed drama is set in the South Bronx, known as the birthplace of hip-hop and has been since the 1970s. It follows a small crew of teens who dance or create music. Production reportedly spent over $120 million to make the film, making it the most expensive production in Netflix history. Each episode takes a deeper dive into the rise of hip-hop and disco music.

Annie (2014) The musical starring Jamie Foxx finds Quvenzhané Wallis as the first Black Annie. The orphan unexpectedly meets wealthy businessman Will Stacks, who uses her to help with his mayoral campaign. The funny satire has quiet moments, sad moments, and performances of “Tomorrow” and “Hard-Knock Life.” She eventually moves in with Stacks, and the two build a bond similar to the one depicted between Annie and her benefactor Daddy Warbucks in the 1932 “Little Orphan Annie” classic.

The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992) In the film, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Angela Bassett play Joseph and Katherine Jackson, the parents of Michael Jackson and his nine siblings. The five-hour miniseries tells the captivating story of how five Jackson siblings became one of the most iconic boy groups in music history. Their unique sound came out of Gary, Indiana, and took over the music industry for years.
