Would LOVE that essay on combat in dnd because full agree. But not even just for people watching live play, like, combat is an essential feature of dnd as a game system and it endlessly frustrates me when i see dms be like “yeah combat is just too complicated and no fun so i dont do it in my game :)!” Like i guess thats your right, but any non-caster class is gonna be miserable in your game. I saw a video recently talking about how dnd has kind of become the default ttrpg and is marketed as the perfect system for everyone and any style of play which is just. So not true. Combat in dnd is equally as integral as roleplay is and theres really no argument otherwise. Very valid if you hate dnd combat, it sure isnt for everyone, but in that case maybe play a different ttrpg where the characters arent constructed around combat abilities, i promise you’ll have more fun.

So this is one of those things that touches on maybe 99% of my feelings on Experiencing Fiction in general and actual play in particular; I apologize in advance for the length and digressions within this response.

Here are the reasons I have seen or I surmise why people don’t like D&D combat, either in actual play or in home games:

It can get crunchy and involves a lot of rules

There are long stretches in which individuals do not necessarily act (not exclusive to combat but I think this is a factor)

It contains violence

There is a potential for character death

Now, it’s fine if you aren’t interested in D&D-style combat, for whatever reason, when you play ttrpgs. It’s just that this is a core feature of D&D. As you say, this is what the martial classes are structured around - and, frankly, no small number of casting classes/subclasses as well. By avoiding it when you play D&D, you’re avoiding the bulk of the game, and there are plenty of ttrpgs that permit open RP that aren’t combat focused that would probably fit your needs better (eg: PbtA and Savage Worlds are both generic systems that can support a heroic fantasy like D&D without the emphasis on combat skills). I happen to love and prefer D&D, but that is specifically because I love combat, and yeah, there are other games and people should seek out those games if they don’t like combat.

When it comes to D&D actual play though…skipping combat is just straight-up stupid. And to be clear I mean fully skipping it and not watching it at all; while this is piggybacking off my post about spoilers, it’s fine if you are the sort of person who needs to know how combat ends in order to enjoy it! That’s just a personal preference that I respect even if I don’t share it.

D&D combat isn’t just an inherent part of the game; it’s an inherent part of the story. The idea of D&D being split into combat and RP is a false dichotomy. There is RP and crucial story within combat scenes, and you simply do not achieve the same effects by reading an after-the-fact summary. To use examples from Critical Role, consider one of the most famous RP moments from Campaign 1, when Scanlan uses his 9th level counterspell in the Vecna fight. The weight of that moment derives from mechanics and from the fact that it is in the midst of combat and well into a climatic final battle. Or for lighter examples, there’s a ton of Beau/Yasha and Fjord/Jester mid-combat flirting running through much of Campaign 2 that informs those relationships. Molly’s death? Caleb going into a fugue state when he kills humanoids with fire? Yasha destroying Obann? Fjord dying mid-deep scion fight? Those are all moments that have deep character weight and meaning that are within the context of combat, and you cannot divorce them from that context and hope to retain the same effect.

This is what dovetails into a larger discussion of Experiencing Fiction which is a (in my opinion) worrying tendency among some people to truly believe that you can cut up media into the palatable bits and pieces and push all of what you see as icky vegetables to the side of your plate. I fucking hate this. I think it’s what drives a lot of things including a distaste for combat. This is how you get, for example, people who dislike combat because Violence And Death Bad, which, do I think that in the real world violence is most often a thing to be avoided? Do I think that in the real world death is heartbreaking? Yes, but this is fiction. There’s that great Brennan Lee Mulligan quote about how TTRPGs like D&D allow people who usually must be conflict-avoidant in real life to let out their anger and frustration in a place where it is safe and harmless, and I believe that whole-heartedly. I want stories about death because I want to know I'm not alone in how I feel about death. I want stories in which people can express their rage in ways both healthy and unhealthy, because big same. (I also think it’s absolutely not coincidental that people who believe they are ‘protecting’ people by circumscribing what is acceptable in fiction tend to be strongly associated with either bigoted, violent policies in real life, or harassment and doxxing online; maybe enjoy a fucked up movie, as John Waters once said, and you'll calm down.)

This idea that you can cut up media and only consume what you like is also what I think is behind some of the really ill-considered and overly granular timestamped content warnings I’ve mentioned previously. It is fine if there are things you don’t want to watch or which will be upsetting or even triggering to watch! It’s fine if you as an individual don’t like violence! But I think there’s a problem when people believe they are entitled to be able to watch whatever they want and have it mold to their exact wants and needs (and that it’s a failing if it doesn’t), rather than taking on the responsibility of seeking out media that already fits the bill. Actual Play D&D will nearly always have violent encounters. If this will be an issue this is not for you. It is not gatekeeping to say “you can come through this gate, but the gate is in fact here for your specifically requested protection"; and yet people think that instead, gates should be placed around everything else. So (to give an example) this is why the warnings for D20’s Neverafter strike me as a symptom of this larger problem - if you have discomfort with violence towards animals and children, that’s fine, but you are watching a D&D horror series in which over half the player characters are either animals or children. This is not something where you can skip a few seconds of a flashing gif that might be a migraine or seizure trigger, or a case where an exceptionally rough scene of gaslighting can be read instead of watched; this is inherent to the show, and if this is not for you, you need to go elsewhere.

To give one last example, I was looking for fanart for Worlds Beyond Number, and came across a picture of Suvi with a caption of “Suvi but without the imperialism” and like…Aabria has said in interviews that this engagement with the empire is extremely deliberate; that Suvi is intended to be tied into the political structures of this world as an intentional contrast with Eursulon’s status as an outsider and Ame’s role at the smaller, community level. Suvi without imperialism is not identifiable as the same character and it throws the entire story off-kilter; she is of this empire and that is the fucking point. Any story worth telling is not just items thrown haphazardly into a bowl; they are combined and mixed. Someone is giving you a plate of brownies and you are acting like it’s physically possible to take out the cocoa powder without fucking the end result, and buddy, it’s not.

(Truly, I was not joking when I said this is like, the load-bearing pillar of most of my complaints about fiction consumption patterns in general. This is about how people will deny the flaws in characters even though any reasonably intelligent ten-year-old, and I know because I fucking was one once, understands that person vs. themself is one of the core conflicts and overcoming one’s flaws is in many cases the entire story and if you start out perfect there is nothing to be said. Like…I think a lot of people genuinely just want to watch a nonstop Monterey Bay Otter Cam of their sufficiently sanitized, focus-group-tested blorbos baking cookies together, and are affronted when people with the tiniest sliver of empathy and/or curiosity want a story with plot and character growth, which in turn require conflict.)

Anyway. I think the takeaways here are that there’s this awful entitlement people have in which they think that they can simply consume anything and it is the failure of that media if it doesn’t cater specifically to them, rather than a failure of them to seek out that which they would enjoy (and I could go on this rant indefinitely; it is truly the most constant theme among Takes I Think Are Dumb); and also I really want to bake something right now, given my choices of metaphor. Combat is part of D&D as a game and as a storytelling medium, and it is incumbent upon people who do not like combat to find something that doesn’t have D&D combat, rather than try to pull out the vital organs of the story.

I know people hc that Fred II and Roxanne are the next generation of Weasley twins but I always imagine it as Molly and Lucy. Percy watched Fred die, so emotional damage, and identical or not, he would still know to raise his daughters like different people without as much pressure of ‘the Weasley twins’ on them. It follows the pattern of the sibling of the twins having the next generation.

Screw it, rant time. You can tell which gen people prefer by how they characterize the next gen. Rose isnt the next Hermionie, Hugo isnt just another Ron, Albus isnt Regulous, Scorbus isnt Drarry or Jegulous for that matter. Most importantly, kids named after dead people arent those people. The pressure of having to live up to James Potter, Sirius Black, and Fred Weasley isnt going to shape these kids into them.

Imagine it like this: Mcgonagall sees the names James Sirius, Fred II, Teddy Lupin, and thinks it’s all over. But James is a good kid, he likes being liked. He plays Quidditch, but isn’t obsessed with it. They pull the occasional prank, but it’s nothing ingenious. They grew up on stories of the mauaders, prewetts and Weasley how can you blame them. Teddy tutors younger-years, James makes non-magical maps for first-years, Fred’s fireworks are the silent type as to not wake anyone. All is well.

Then Lilly Luna Potter strolls in, followed closely by the next generation of twins. Lily’s in Slytherin, Molly in Gryphindor and Lucy in Ravenclaw, though Mcgonagall finds herself questioning it twice a week. They have access to three common rooms, the RoR, Lilly nicks the Mauaders map from James three weeks in, Albus lets them borrow the invisibility cloak. Gravity is reversed in the great hall, everyone’s dragonhide gloves are filled with itching powder, thornless roses block corridors, hundreds of marbles are released down the staircases. Mcgonagall writes to Percy twice to confirm he only has two children because Argus keeps swearing there are four, one in each house.

It’s a miracle to see any of them wearing the correct tie, Huffelpuff tries to stay out of it, a ‘war’ starts between the entire house of Ravenclaw and Slytherin that ends with a school-wide assembly because oh my gods its all the geniuses of the school going to war the Gryphindors and Huffelpuffs need to actually learn. Molly plays Beater for Ravenclaw, Lily takes Teddys job of commentator. In third year Iily and Alice Longobottom take polyjuice so there actually are four of them during Christmas dinner, Rose has never looked so afraid.

Molly gets every detention, though probably split them 50/5o with Lucy. Lucy’s record is perfect as a Result, she makes prefect. A mistake. She catches a group of muggleborns trying to set up Wi-Fi and actively helps them. Lily finds out she inherited Parseltounge from her dad in fifth year, they of course turn the Chamber of Secrets into a lounge (their parents had the baskalisk cleared out) Most letters send home say: ‘Something has happened, we cant prove it was your daughter, but who else could train two hundred garden snakes to follow Albus around so kids stop picking on him’

see also i DO have guesses for how the fool is going to actually be with bee herself. like, im really excited to see their relationship. shes another white prophet, and one he can help guide while not making the same mistakes that were made with him. this is also something that as far as we understand about prophets isnt supposed to happen, because prophets aren't supposed to overlap. the pale woman and the fool are said to be the exception to that. (im not counting the fool and prilkop, because the fool was done with his task by the time they met.)

but the fool was SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD before bee was ever born. and she's currently having visions and about to go about her quest. a former white prophet mentoring a current one is i think supposed to be impossible, so this is very cool. and itll be healing for him to do that, and helpful for her.

and besides the white prophet stuff... shes fitz's daughter. and shes a LOT like him when he was a kid. and shes a white, and shes a LOT like the fool. ("strange," learned to act and play dumb or freak people out to combat being bullied, values her privacy and her things not being touched or moved, precocious, good at insults when she knows she has little other power.) and visually she looks like the fool as a kid, and probably resembles fitz. i am FASCINATED to see how the fool reacts to a kid that is the closest you could possibly get to a kid that's both his and fitz's, especially when fitz is absolutely going to fall right into "you are pack, cub is pack property, this is your cub too." after so many years staying away from fitz because hes convinced himself there is no possible way he couldve had a life with him, here is bee, who is mollys, and fitz's and in a strange way very much his too. and here is fitz, who had every moment of the life the fool foresaw for him and was in fact incredibly happy and now hes done with it and he needs him again. and hes going pack pack cub cub shes yours too, help me with her. (and theyre still i think married, which the fool still doesnt know either!)

thats a LOT. thats a LOT and im fascinated to see how it goes. but like, i can imagine a lot of ways that could go. i can imagine the fool having a lot of strong reactions to helping the next white prophet. i can imagine the fool having a lot of strong reactions to seeing a kid that is a lot like both him and fitz. i can imagine the fool having a lot of strong reactions to fitz trusting him with his daughter, or acting like naturally she is His Daughter Too because thats How Fitz Works. i can imagine him having a lot of strong reactions to the fact she's molly's, too, especially since the fool just never knew her.

and i can see bee being jealous of him taking up her father's attention (which she already expressed concern over, i believe) or being angry if fitz tries to pull a "i dont love him more than your mother BUT" like he did with nettle and feeling like fitz is replacing molly, or liking him because he makes fitz happy, or feeling a belonging with him as a fellow white, or seeing him as a father figure, etc etc and/or and/or. theyre gonna have a really interesting relationship and i can see a lot of ways that could go.

but like. just the fool. FINDING OUT. fitz and molly had a daughter and shes the next white prophet. NO clue how thats gonna go. hes gonna crash out

hi! sorry to bother you with this but I don’t really know how to search for it online and I don’t know anyone else that follows cr/has seen C2, so… when they brought devexian back online I know he was very broken and couldn’t remember much, but he was… somewhat functional, right? like, his core was intact etc?

I’m asking because I’ve been having this feeling lately that they’ll get to the repair terminal in the genesis ward in the next ep or so, and for the live show they’ll somehow fix fcg through the same means the mighty nein used for D (and that’s how sam would make his appearance at the show), since they kept the pieces after the explosion…

I guess my question is… would it work? can they fix fcg there? or would the core need to be intact for that? was devexian’s? could the repair terminal give them another core or is their core intrinsically linked to their soul? (I guess the last question is more of a meta question since there’s no way we can know that😂 but I’d love to know your opinion on it)

hello anon. I'm deeply flattered you asked me and I am also SO sorry i did not see this until way late. I'm not even sure this answer is still any use given the liveshow has already gappened. but uhm. im here now! Never apologize for asking clarifying questions to me, i dont mind, just know that I sometimes (often) won't know. Or might go AWOL! apparently. This goes quadruple-fold for when I am some million hours behind on the campaign.

Also you sent this in BEFORE the live show and since then the live show has happened and Sam has returned with a hot flirty hunk of a character so I guess that answers that part of your question? I Am. So Sorry. But imo your broader question about if they could bring back F.C.G at all remains.

so that said, knowing that I havent been properly caught up for some 30-40 episodes, I'm going to give my very handwavey opinion, then turn you over to the hands of my followers who are probably more well informed and also probably caught up on the campaign.

I think its important to consider any kind of F.C.G revival on both an out of game perspective and in game perspective, bc I think with revival the latter influences the former a LOT. I think if Sam were really interested in bringing back F.C.G the repair terminals and them keeping parts of F.C.G could factor into it. There's definitely the question of "what makes F.C.G F.C.G" that would have to factor in, which gets philosophical very quick- I think there would have to be some equivalent of a standard revival ritual where they call something back from the beyond, because IMO, putting a "new" core in wouldnt bring back FCG.

Before we even get into the nitty gritty of the philosophy, though I don't know that Sam would want to bring F.C.G back? I mean the live show ended and there's now a hot minotaur in the party so its easy for me to say that. But Sam has also always been someone to commit to the big swings for characters- including losses- and his treatment of F.C.G's death felt like he thought it was meaningful and impactful and said what he wanted it to say. So in that vein- maybe it isnt possible to bring F.C.G back, largely because I think Matt would respect if Sam wouldn't want to leave that on the table.

TL;DR: Its not that I think there's no way to viably justify an F.C.G revival using the repair terminals, but it would be tricky and I don't see them doing that, from what I know. Is there an opportunity for something similar to Molly -> Kingsley towards the end of the campaign? Shore. Maybe. but i dont count that in the bucket youre describing.

the absolute mind boggling face i made when i saw this synopsis i can't describe the feeling i felt seeing that.

like DUDE. this is LORE CENTRAL. this is literally scratch getting lots of memories back, likely (im 99% sure) by way of some trigger that brings it back...

a bunch of theories my brain brained:

Jinx will gaslight gatekeep and girlboss her way using this situation as a crutch. Bro is obviously gonna see scratch (defo stressed/retraumatized/confused) in this state of Knowing More and somehow twist her words in such a way that scratch gives up the chairman cloak. For the pathetic ass mf she is I believe she's HIGHLY capable of spinning some words.

Scratch gets his memories back because Jinx accidentally triggers it. Whether they're led into some place of familiarity or whatever, something somewhere happens. And BOOM. (Note: The showrunners have said iirc that we;ll see how he died, aka i believe this trigger might be something so deeply related to his past life, like a grave or a house. Maybe it's Ollie's house. We haven't seen the inside of that fucker, ever. Maybe something in there will fuck with his brain and it'll do a thing. I mean there's a chance this was either Adia's house or even where Scratch lived

The decision Scratch makes is probably whether he should essentially live in the past (assuming by all means that adia isnt dead) and whether to live with the mcgees. I think this would close off his arc of his past and also reiterate the bond between him and the mcgees. It makes sense plot wise, i mean bro's been living in being unsure of his past before he met molly and drank the soda. But now he Knows All. What does he do? Maybe his first instinct is to be attached to Adia (again, if that mf aint dead) because she could tell him everything. If we find out more about her (which is a given if scratch gets a big memory burst) then he might attach himself to adia as a coping mechanism. Maybe molly has an argument or something to scratch about this and then suddenly they split up (picture what happened in the dance with some-ollie episode). This makes it infinitely harder to fight Jinx (no chairman? what's a human gonna do now?). Maybe Molly summons everyone but scratch bc they're in an argument about this. Including the Chens, because in everyone's opinion they're SUPER last resort. They (to molly and the friend group) seem like the people to not only defeat jinx but capture innocent ghosts too, so ofc this is the most drastic "we're losing time and we're out of resources fr fr" situation

I bet we'll find out a bit about his home life, lots of stuff/other theories ive seen imply his life may have been... prety bad. I do believe in that. As well, we'll probably get confirmation of whether the "scratch is todd's wraith" theory holds up. I doubt it's true but I'd like to see it myself. Same goes with the "adia is jinx" theory.

Scratch corrupts theory seems to be more true and more truer the more we go farther in the series I'm going to sob if that happens

Oh now that is interesting. I love Angelo Bronte, he's one of my favorite antagonists from the game (I even got to meet his actor in July 💀), so I love any ship that has him in it.

I absolutely love Molly's gown and wish we got to see her instead of Bill at the party, and I do think Bronte would see her and show some interest.

Would really be a big F-you for Dutch too, to see his lady with one of the people who tried to kill him. She deserves a happy ending too, she got such a tragic ending. All she wanted was to have the bare minimum of attention and affection and she ended up lying just to get that last reaction from Dutch before being set free.

Though I have to say one of my favorite Molly ships is probably with Mary-Beth. Not to make things fruity but 😂 Mary-Beth would actually care for and give Molly that attention she so desperately wants. And of course Molly would be absolutely flattered to be written about in one of Mary-Beth's romance novels.

i'm honestly surprised nate isnt like rafe when it comes down to drugs because they r SO similar. rafe is such a coke whore and we know nate does drugs sometimes too like molly or weed but also it kinda makes sense because despite all his issues and his alcoholism (?? specifically regarding molly and burrich. i mean... i actually knew ahead of time on first read but i think distance made me forget how heavily foreshadowed it is. starling all but tells fitz that molly and burrich... alone and caring for a baby together thinking fitz is dead. theyre probably going to find comfort in each other.

and like every skill dream he has of molly is just hammering that further. personally i am all for problematic age gap molly/burrich lmao i think its actually a nice peace for them after both being kept from the person they loved via various circumstances. and theyre similar and work well together.

also im still a molly stan and think most molly hate stems from typical... female character in the way of queer ship type shit. which like... she isn't even. but whatever.

also the fool/amber/beloved isnt a man!! that is another thing that bothers me in the brief view of the fandom ive seen. she is genderfluid or agender or generally genderqueer and i love him.

First Battle Rapper sketch is funny. Mikey Day raps which is torture but its well written.

Pretape sketch is funny, Fred Armisen makes an appearance I imagine because the sketch is entirely in spanish. Featured player Marcello Hernandez gets great screen time and makes the lines funny even though you cant understand him. Would be surprised if he isnt on the main cast next year.

Another sketch with lots of spanish but mostly just to give Bad Bunny something to do. He’s much more comfortable in spanish and the few times he has to talk in english it’s very stilted and awkward. The sketches are pretty host light this week though so it works. This Telenovela sketch works pretty well with some very funny lines and a really good bit character from Bowen Yang. Also who the hell is the guy that cameos in this sketch? I thought it was Mick Jagger at first lol. Is it Fred Armisen in makeup? UPDATE: it is Mick Jagger.

Please Don’t Destroy knock it out of the park again. Sketch is about Bad Bunny showing up to them in an elaborate shrek costume and pretending he doesnt want to do a sketch about shrek. Shrek jokes are kinda tired but its nothing cringe and mostly uses it as a cultural reference. PDD stay winning.

Colin’s Weekend Update piece thinly veiled Pro Israel views. We don’t stan.

Rest of Weekend Update was pretty forgettable. Ego Nwodim as Jada Pinkett doing very predictable jokes. But some of the stories they mention are crazy, did L’oreal’s products seriously make Black women infertile????

Shorter Update this week considering last week had two features. Couple of funny ones 6/10

First sketch after Update was good. Guy introducing his white girlfriend to his hispanic family. Pedro Pascal guest stars helping the sketch (and Bad Bunny) a healthy amount. Chloe Troast features in the sketch, her first real part since she joined the cast. Nothing standout from her here but always fun to keep your eye on the newcomers.

Okay Pre-tape sketch. Pursuit of Happyness riff with a “real” new york subway in he background. That bit was funny but I was paying more attention to the parody in the foreground cuz it had Devon Walker and James Austin Johnson. Good sketch.

Bad Bunny’s performances have been pretty cool with big sets. Very possible that he put a majority of his work into this part of the show. He’s so dreamy lol XD.

This Nun sketch is pretty forgettable, but its cool that everyone’s lines are kinda unique to them. Punkie Johnson has a Punkie line, Heidi Gardner has a Gardner line, Sarah Sherman has a Sherman line, it’s fun. If that rule is consistent for everyone though, then Chloe Troast is in trouble cuz she easily had the worst lines in this. I won’t hold it against her though, give her the benefit of the doubt. Molly Kearney features prominently in the sketch but their character isn’t that funny. I’m rooting for them to be good so lets hope they get better stuff to work with soon.

Final Burt’s Bees sketch was pretty forgettable, but Bowen Yang kinda lights it up at the end.

And that’s goodnights! Show felt shorter this week but probably just cuz last week was jam-packed. More of an average week with a lot of screentime for Marcello Hernandez who is pretty promising. Overall maybe a 6.5/10?

i decided i do want mollymauk in this star trek au but he’s not senior staff because i ran out of senior staff roles to assign so since a lot of this is pretty literal tng translation ive decided he can run ten forward (like guinan) but there are scenes now where its like. senior staff, mission critical people, and then also molly because he’s yasha’s friend. on the one hand im afraid this makes him look more useless than he is but on the other its very funny so im keeping it

also i’m not doing it because i’ve already structured my whole shit w/fjord as captain BUT in another universe i could EASILY write a star trek tng widomauk fic where molly is Q and caleb is picard. the comedic value of that is very high
