#BPD Fiddleford

I can't believe nobody has pointed this out before? (Small clarification for Robbie: he's happy in a secure romantic relationship. Wendy made him feel insecure, and he took it out on Dipper. Tambry did not, and his whole personality became healthier as a result.)

To be clear, I'm not saying all of these characters have BPD. But I'm also not surprised that a show whose main theme is "Family is Important and Being Rejected Makes You A Little Weird" has a lot of characters that Feel Rejected, and as a result Get a Little Weird. All of these characters are given the chance to form healthy relationships and grow as a result, which is really cool.

For those who don't knows, Borderline Personality Disorder is a traumatic condition that's characterized by things like:

Extreme emotional reactivity

Extreme sensitivity to rejection

A tendency toward black and white thinking

A tendency toward intense but unstable relationships

Alexithymia, or inability to feel/understand/describe one's emotions

Severe anxiety

Self-destruction

It tends to happen when one is consistently rejected or taught to suppress one's identity as a child - usually through intense bullying, abuse, et cetera. People with BPD often struggle to form healthy support networks because the emotional disregulation can make you act inappropriately (stalking, yelling, destroying property) and because there is a lot of social stigma against strong emotions even if you have your behavior well-managed. Therapy can help with the behavioral symptoms, and a strong support network can make the emotions and anxiety much more manageable. (There is no medication for BPD. Medication for comorbid conditions like depression might help.)

Anyway, this is a kids' cartoon, so everyone's behavior is over-the-top and the story arcs are black-and-white by design. I still like them, though.

-Emma May Hc Rambles

Now because I actually don’t have anything prepared to post for today (sleep sounded better than late night sketching) I decided to just ramble about lil misc facts about my ver of Emma May Dixon :) nothing crazy plot wise, simply just things that I haven’t mentioned before or made dedicated posts to yet

I always envisioned Emma May with a very specific southern accent, and it took a random shuffle of my Spotify to realize she sounds like Dolly Parton!! It was either this or Luanne from King of the Hill which also sounded close to what I imagined, but as far as voice claims go, my ver of Em sounds like Dolly :D

She has bpd and ptsd. The latter I don’t feel needs much explanation as that comes from the cult bg, but the bpd comes from her fathers side of the family and has been an active part of her for as long as she can remember

Considering the time period though her mood swings and times of anger were always just chalked up to ‘womens hysteria’ and the like, which only proved to frustrate her more

She admittedly does have a bit of a temper, but nothing ever harmful to the people she cares about, she more so has adapted to take things out on herself. Ie pulling her hair, digging her nails into her arms, or biting her knuckles. Anything to ground her into reality to try and calm herself down

Ultimately though once she runs away from home she was fortunate to be surrounded by people who came to understand her. Be it Stan understanding in his own way and showing her his own copes, Ford keeping her distracted with mindless rambling, her uncle or Carla just giving her space to breathe, or Fiddleford understanding mental plights and just becoming a person of comfort for her- she thankfully has people who care

She used to date Ford back in high school

This didn’t really start until senior year when the pressure was on for both of them, but it was nothing crazy and honestly something both of them did cause ‘well ig if I could date anyone it’d probably be you’

From Carla saying ‘Em, it’s a safe bet’, to Stan saying it’ll be Ford‘s only chance to ‘get the girl’ they both conceded and gave it a try

They broke up just before Ford’s first semester at Backupsmore upon mutual ground, both confessing they only ever really liked the other as a friend, but otherwise ‘hey if we don’t meet anyone by the time we’re 30 then let’s get married for the benefits’

But of course Em meets Fiddleford and the rest is history as we know it

She’s a smoker and it’s a main part of the reason why she never kicked Fiddleford for his own chewing tobacco habits

She stopped mostly a bit into dating Fidds because smoking for her was mainly a stress relief, so with him as something more calming she saw the need for it less and less, but the second she knows she could potentially be getting pregnant in their relationship she quits

She picks it up briefly again around the late 80s, but otherwise is completely done with it as a coping mechanism before the 90s

She had a crush on Stan when they were kids (and honestly she still kinda did for a little while after that as well)

She always saw her feelings as something unrealistic and Stan as unattainable though as once she finally planned on saying something he saved Carla at the movies and that relationship began (which the irony here is Em also discovered she liked girls through her friendship with Carla)

But her underlining feelings that simmered beneath friendship is what motivated her to take him in after he was kicked out of his home, it’s why she kept sending him money for so long, and it’s why she bought and kept an issue of ‘Hunky Drifters Catalogue’ that had Stan in it. Something she forgets she has until she unpacking in Palo Alto and damn near has a heart attack

She also reminds me of Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet, but alas I could only put six

But anywho I hOPE this makes sense??

For me it’s like, the intense drive and determination paired with the sass and capabilities of a temper when people don’t take them seriously energy that feels so Emma May core. That and they all have a special someone eventually that they’d live and die for wether they want to admit it or not

((A few bits about the AU and my HCs!!

• Stanley, Stanford, Mabel, and Dipper are all Autistic! Mabel and Stanley (Stan) are more bad with social rules rather than social cues and where Stanley is short-tempered, Mabel is easily upset. Dipper and Stanford (Ford) are bad with social cues, really smart, have special interests (ford - supernatural, Dipper - astronomy and the Unknown), and more anxious.

• Pronouns and identity HCs for the Pines family are as follows;

Stanley: Any; Cassgender (masc lenient), Bisexual.

Stanford: He/They; Demiboy, Unlabeled sexuality and romantic identity (can’t find the right label for himself), dates pretty much any gender/being.

Dipper: He/They/It; Transmasc w/ non-binary tendencies, Quioromantic (romance confuses him and he’s bad with it), Omnisexual (fem pref), Demisexual

Mabel: She/They/Glitter/Cat/any sparkly or cat-related xenopronouns; Xenohoarder (mostly cat related and glitter related, will make a list eventually), Pansexual.

• Full disability list minus the Pines having autism; Stan has anger issues, addiction issues (drinks and smokes a lot, not around the kids though), PTSD and a hint of schizophrenia from the memory gun. On the topic of the memory gun, Fidds! Fiddleford has PTSD, memory loss, schizophrenia from the memory gun, temporary memory relapses, ADHD, and fainting spells. Ford has PTSD but gets affected differently, addiction issues (caffeine. No, seriously, it’s an issue), mild somniphobia (fear of sleep) from past Bill issues, schizophrenia, su1c1d@l tendencies (canon), Hyperthymesia (super memory), social anxiety (mostly dealt with, still gets anxious sometimes and has panic attacks), and polydactyl (his sixth finger). Soos has Down syndrome, motor skill issues, sensory processing disorder, and dyslexia. Wendy (who won’t be mentioned much) has BPD, mild social anxiety, and ODD. Dipper has generalized anxiety disorder (canon, actually), mild depression, PTSD, OCD, SPD like soos, and a fear of failure. Mabel has ADHD, depression, fear of change, attachment issues, PTSD, and SPD. Bill has ASPD (antisocial personality disorder), anger issues, hallucinations, PTSD, depression, phobias (canon), insanity (canon), conduct disorder, autism, DID (will explain when asked), and a bit of SPD.

• Bill went through the theraprism in this RP AU (the au this rp comes from that I created) but is still very much mentally unstable. Has a bit of handyman au inspo where he does live and work at the shack but he isn’t stuck there. He is triangle but has a human form that he despises, his powers are limited no matter the form, and he’s prone to fainting spells if he uses too much power at once. Soos and Melody trust him cause they were the ones who found him, but the others are kinda weary still. Including Ford.
