Bring on the Wonder
flickr
Bring on the Wonder by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at an overlook viewpoint along the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The setting is looking downstream and to the south-southeast as the Rio Grande flowed by. In composing this image, I took advantage of the high ground I was located on and angled my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to capture a sweeping view, looking across this river gorge. Given the overcast skies that day, I felt that was just a negative space and worked to minimize that. I did though like the mountains of in the distance and kept some of the overcast guys above them.

North Chalone Peak While on the Prewett Point Trail (Pinnacles National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Prewett Point Trail with a view looking to the south to the ridges and peak of North Chalone Peak. This setting is in Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of the ridges, spurs and other terrain features in the way they created a layer look from near to far. I used the higher ground that I was located on to bring the peak up into the image and create more of a sweeping view, leading up to that.

Real Bisti Badlands
flickr
Real Bisti Badlands by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around and exploring the Bisti Badlands with a view looking to the south-southeast to some eroded formations and bluffs present in this part of Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area. What I wanted to capture with this image was to have a balanced, leveled-on view with the horizon. I liked the balance with the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image with those of the blues and whites in the skies and clouds above.

Taking One Day at a Time in Capitol Reef National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the south-southeast while taking in views across a nearby rocky high ground along the Hickman Bridge Trail in Capitol Reef National Park. What drew me into this setting was the color contrast between the earth-tones present in the lower portion of the image with the rocks, sandstone formation and trees with that of the blue skies and clouds above.

Forever Bryce Canyon National Park

Forever Bryce Canyon National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the south while taking in views across eroded formations and hoodoos present at Swamp Canyon overlook in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of a color contrast between the red and oranges of the hoodoos on both sides of the draw with the greens of the evergreen trees. Composing the image was then just a matter of lining up to best capture that contrast of colors and use the blue skies above to fill in the rest of the image.

Preaching the Gospel of Beautiful Things (Capitol Reef National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking back along the Hickman Bridge Trail and a view looking to the south-southeast to a nearby ridge and high ground present. I decided to take advantage of that high ground with a little bit of the Pectols Pyramid formation rising in the distance with blue skies and clouds above as a backdrop and color contrast.

What an Amazing View I Had That Morning in Big Bend National Park!
flickr
What an Amazing View I Had That Morning in Big Bend National Park! by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Lost Mine Trail and a view looking to the south-southeast toward Townsend Point and the mountainside slopping downward; that's what I wanted to capture in the same image. But there was also morning haze present that made me have to focus on metering properly to minimize blowing any highlights in the clouds or distant ridges. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with NX Studio. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 4 where I added a Polarization and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.
