My thinking in composing this image was to capture that look through the nearby trees with the New River flowing by as that more distant backdrop. There would be a draw with the colors in the nearby trees leaves, but by finding that clearing through the trees, I felt I was somewhat able to bring that draw to the river valley and gorge with the ridgelines and mountainsides all around in this setting.

To begin, I would like to dissect a quote which directly relates theories of interpretivism to The Gift of Beauty from the textbook. “Interpretation should instill in people the ability, and the desire, to sense the beauty in their surroundings -- to provide spiritual uplift and to encourage resource preservation." To me, this piece of text targets the actions which should be invoked through nature interpretation, including the heightened desire and drive to interact with natural beauty, holding our spirits high and engaging in conservation and preservation. Art in nature can take many different forms and is relative to different people with different backgrounds. Whether natural art embody a photograph, a painting, a technical skill like fly fishing, a natural phenomenon or something else, it will be perceived emotionally as well as intellectually from an audience. All the various art forms relating to nature are destined to help tell a story and provide a snapshot piece of insight into that setting, or that adventure.

A natural art form which relates to me is nature photography. From the time I was a young boy, I have been on an everlasting nature adventure, spending all my free time hiking rivers with my centrepin, catching snakes, mountain biking and kayak camping. Over the course of these countless adventures, there are too many amazing moments which go by undocumented, this is where our cellphones come into play! Within the last five years, my friend group has developed and as we get older, the trips become more magical and the more I feel the need to photograph them. I purchased a decent digital camera with a strong optical zoom feature and went straight to work. Nowadays, after wrapping up a fishing or camping trip, I have twenty to fifty saved memories which can never be forgotten. Not only have these photos added an artistic element to my time outdoors, but it has allowed me to take my story telling a next level and provide physical evidence of the topic at hand. Displaying fishing photo to people who are interested fosters a bonding experience where stories are shared, and natural interpretation is occurring on another level.

The beauty intrinsic within natural art can be used as a sort of hook for the outside audience to get involved and engaged with nature themselves. Art provides an alternative way for one to feel the effects of nature without existing within it. Aswell as it provides the individual creating the art, an outlet to demonstrate one’s true feelings and passion towards the outdoors.

In contrast to the art which has been a focus of my blog thus far, I would briefly like to draw a connection between nature and interpretive theatre. Theatrical productions can provide audience with a meaningful and memorable story which highlights a unique view. I remember as a student in elementary school, our class would visit the Backus Conservation Area in Long Point, Ontario to learn about local wildlife and pioneer life as this was a prominent area for pioneer settlement. The conservation area put on demonstrations where student employees would dress up as pioneers and act out or describe various aspects of their lives. This created a different form of interpretation and m ay have communicated information better to certain people of certain learning styles. Art is intertwined within nature interpretation through numerous routes and can help foster deeper understanding and engagement.

I hate ticks

Alarm has risen in recent years as warming temperatures intensify tick activity and disease risk. Cases of malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus and Lyme disease — infections transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes — have skyrocketed. Scientists worry that Rocky Mountain spotted fever, first identified in western Montana at the beginning of the 20th century, could spread to more regions.

“What’s the tipping point? We don’t know for sure,” said Laura Backus, a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Infectious Disease Ecology at the University of California at Davis and another member of the research team. “Weather directly affects how fast ticks reproduce. When it’s hot and dry, they get more desperate.”

The brown dog tick, one of the species that transmits Rocky Mountain spotted fever, becomes more aggressive toward humans in seeking blood meals in hotter, drier climates, such as that in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, said Backus, who led a 2021 study that found that the ticks are twice as likely to choose humans over dogs when temperatures rise.

Higher Temperatures Make Some Ticks Pick Humans Over Dogs

Disease-carrying ticks that normally prefer dogs may start to prefer the blood of humans as climate change cranks up the heat around the world, according to new research presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH).

Experiments revealed that brown dog ticks, which can transmit the life-threatening Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) and normally prefer to feed on dogs, become more likely to switch up their usual dining habits and go for people as the mercury rises, reports Patrick Barkham for the Guardian.

“Our work indicates that when the weather gets hot, we should be much more vigilant for infections of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in humans,” says Laura Backus, a Ph.D. student in veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis who led the study, in a statement.

RMSF can be treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated, kills 30 percent of those infected. Early detection is crucial to treating the disease, as it can quickly escalate if an infected person isn’t treated within five days of their first symptoms. Those symptoms include fever, rash, severe headache, swelling around the eyes and backs of the hands, as well as nausea or vomiting, writes Kathleen Doheny for WebMD Health News. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of RMSF are on the rise. In 2017, there were more than 6,000 cases, a 12-fold increase compared to the 495 cases reported in 2000.

Spurred by prior research that suggested brown dog ticks were more aggressive towards humans in warmer weather, Backus and her colleagues devised an unenviable experiment to test the finding. They constructed two large wooden boxes and connected them with a clear plastic tube. Once the researchers had placed a hapless graduate student in one box and a dog in the other, they released 20 ticks into the plastic tube, per the statement.

For 20 minutes, the researchers observed which way the dueling scents of the two different potential meals led the insects to crawl. Though mesh barriers prevented the ticks from reaching their quarry, it was clear from the ticks’ scuttling that the hotter it got, the more likely they were to head towards the person. Compared to 74 degrees, 100-degree temperatures made the ticks two and a half times more likely to prefer the human over the dog, reports Ashley P. Taylor for Live Science.

“The findings from the use of this simple but effective laboratory experiment to gauge how rising temperatures might lead to more human infections with a very dangerous tick-borne pathogen adds to the growing evidence of the increasing connection between climate change and its impact on health,” says Joel Breman, the president of ASTMH, in the statement.

“Climate change is moving so quickly that it is critical to keep pace with the many ways it may alter and intensify the risk of a wide range of infectious diseases so we are better prepared to diagnose, treat and prevent them.”

A medical flight crew from the Tennessee National Guard conducted an emergency air evacuation mission after a hiker suffered a severe illness on the Appalachian Trail on March 15. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., the Tennessee Military Department and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency were notified of a hiker who was suffering from a severe illness near Double Spring Gap Shelter in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The hiker was weak and unable to stand or walk. Once alerted, the Tennessee National Guard began preparing for an emergency rescue mission. A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from Detachment 1, Company C, 1-171st Aviation Regiment, based in Knoxville, prepared for flight and took off less than 30 minutes later. The flight crew consisted of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Backus, pilot in command, Capt. Philip Webster, pilot, Sgt. Chris Farrar, crew chief, and Sgt. 1st Class Cassandra Antes and Sgt. 1st Class Giovanni DeZuani were the flight paramedics. [gallery link="file" size="medium" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="7039,7037"] Just before 9:00 a.m., the flight crew located the patient near Double Spring Gap Shelter. Farrar lowered DeZuani on the helicopter rescue hoist to the patient for a medical assessment. Shortly after 9 a.m., Farrar hoisted both patient and paramedic into the aircraft. Once the patient was on board, DeZuani and Antes rendered aid to the patient as the aircraft flew to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Approximately 9:22 a.m., the aircraft landed at UT Medical Center where medical personnel received the patient. The entire rescue mission took less than an hour and a half.
