Classification Tree – Craters on Mars
A study was conducted to collect the main information on the size, positions and structures of the craters on Mars. This study was created by Stuart Robbins and contains overall 378540 craters.
A decision tree analysis was conducted to test relationships among a series of explanatory variables and a binary, categorical response variable, i.e. the number of azimuthal layers in the crater.
Latitude and longitude estimation of the position of the crater in decimal degrees, its diameter and the average elevation of the crater were used as explanatory variables. 199 samples were used as training samples for the tree.
The average elevation of the crater was used as inital variable: with a reference value less than 0.015 km. Among the craters satisifying this relation, 147 were identified to have a dimeter less than 2.91 km. 146 of these craters are located at latitudes less than 65 deg.
Among the craters with average elevation greater than 0.015 km, 37 have a dimeter greater than 6.9 km. Among these craters, 23 are located at longitudinal angles less than -17 deg.

California Hillsides on a Drive from Pinnacles National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along the Airline Highway and a view looking to the southeast to nearby ranch land and then hillsides. That was my thought on composing this image was to zoom in on the focal length and angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward. I feel that would create a more sweeping view across the ranch as a foreground setting before coming up to the main hill, that would fill up the center portion of the image. The blue skies would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion. The rest was later making adjustments with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

A Panoramic Setting to California Hillsides (Black & White) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A conversion to black & white using DxO PhotoLab 6 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image. I later cropped a portion of the foreground and skies above to create more of a wide-angle, panoramic feel with the image.

Never Underestimate the Beauty of Wildflowers by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Of course, having a nice backdrop with the Mexican Canyon Trestle was also something nice to come upon and use as a backdrop. This is at the Trestle Vista Observation Site in Lincoln National Forest with a view looking to the southeast. I closed down on the aperture as I composed and lined up the image so that I could have more of the entire setting in focus.

Nature Sure is Colorful with Its Flowers! by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at the Trestle Vista Observation Site with a view looking to the southeast to the namesake bridge. This is in Lincoln National Forest. My thought in composing this image was to get down low so that I could capture a look across some nearby wildflowers, both purple and yellow, and using the wooden bridge as a backdrop. I decided to open on the aperture so that only the purple wildflower was in focus with everything else fading away in focus from that. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Starkweather Lake on a Wildfire Haze Overcast Day by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While standing on the shoreline of Starkweather Lake with a view looking to the southeast on a hazy, overcast day. The location is in Inyo National Forest at a roadside pullout on the drive to Devils Postpile National Monument. My thinking in composing this image was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and capture a more sweeping view across the lake with the reflections. That would also minimize what I felt was the negative space from the haze of the overcast skies above.

One of the Many Ways to See the World During a Sunset by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout along California State Route 146 with a view looking to the west to a sunset behind some distant mountains. This location is just outside Pinnacles National Park with different roads leading to wineries in this part of California. Without having much time to think about image composition, I decided to capture what was to my front with the sun and mountains and some nearby trees. One thing I did decide to do was close down a little on the aperture, so that I could create something of a starburst look with the sun. The other thing was to set up my Nikon SLR camera to capture an in-camera HDR TIFF image. My thinking with that was because of the large dynamic range present with the sunset off in the distance and the nearby road and trees that were more or less in shadows. DxO Only I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
