As a result of the degree show series at the University of Portsmouth in 2012, Andrew was the recipient of the Aspex Graduate Award 2012.  The award is given to students from the summer show at the University by Aspex, a local art organisation and gallery.  The prize for the award includes an exhibition sometime in the future and this was what led to this show.
Through this award Andrew was commissioned to expand his photographic series, ‘A Road Petrol Stations at Night’ from the initial 3 images to 10 images which were then exhibited in the Aspex Guildhall gallery in the centre of the city.  During the three months of exhibition between August and October 2014 the work was seen by thousands of people and gained international attention from many organisations including the Royal Institute of British Architects.  The article from RIBA can be found here

On the 5th of November I went to see the art exhibition at the Aspex Gallery along with my course mates.
The art work was made by university students and each piece had a different meaning and functionality. Some where just to be looked at and others where made for touching and messing around.
Although it was a small exhibition it had a lot of variety.
I particularly enjoyed the paintings. The black paint running down the big piece of fabric making a big stain on the ground was amazing.
About the artwork which you could touch. There was a table which was full of disorganized wool and apart of that was a soundtrack of weird noises and sometimes we would hear quotes that the artist’s grandmother would say (if I remember correctly). So while you would put a piece of wool back in order you would hear these sounds at the same time which was quite relaxing to be honest. I don't know if that was the artist’s goal with this project but it was very nice.
It’s already been a couple weeks since the exhibition so I don’t remember much, but it was really fun an it gave me some ideas of what I might do in the future.

Lighting Up The Dark - Research
Todd Hido
Todd Hido was born in 1968 in Kent, Ohio. He studied at a variety of art institutions including California College of Art & Design and Rhode Island School of Design. His work has featured in publications such as Artforum, The New York Times, FOAM and Vanity Fair. He has work in permanent collections in galleries and museums like The New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is currently based in San Francisco. Hido is heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock, Edward Hopper and Larry Sultan.
The main subject of his work is the American urban and suburban landscape, often photographed at night. Todd shoots on film and digital but mainly sticks to film. He chooses based on which aesthetic they will present depending on the subject and location. When editing his negatives together, he manipulates them until he produces a picture that he feels portrays his encounter with the location. His images are created on long, solitary drives. Isolated suburban houses are an ongoing source of inspiration and investigation. He shoots mostly with natural light and some artificial using a tripod. Hido is known for his use of textural detail and colour. Also exploring subtleties and variations in light and shadows. His work has a cinematic quality, reproducing the characteristics of a film still.

Tim Simmons
Tim Simmons is a Norfolk based photographer who worked as in commercial photography up until
2005, before enrolling in a Fine Arts course at Norwich University of Arts where he studied a Masters degree.  His work has been exhibited internationally in the USA and in South Korea, more local exhibitions and some of the first took place in Norwich, Hampshire and at the Aspex Gallery.  He now photographs landscapes and long exposure night scenes.  Simmon’s approach to photography is to explore the relationship between humans and the land we live on as well as considering how we depend on the land.  His work captured the impact of weathering on the shapes and textures found in the ground caused by wind and rain.  He expands upon the link between who we used to be and who we become.
I was drawn to Simmon’s work because of his consideration for texture and the concepts in his approach to his work.  I was also interested in the way he brings out the colours within a landscape, almost creating a whole new environment.

Lots of fun delivering workshops at a local primary school for Aspex Gallery. Workshop related to an exhibition Aspex Gallery had in 2010 - Luna Park. The children had their own dinosaur ten times smaller, and made their own individual out of clay (100 times smaller)
They have been celebrating the ten year anniversary of exhibition Luna Park (delayed because of Covid) there will be a new sculpture unveiled in October this year.

Lighting Up the Dark - Brief and Research
Lighting up the Dark (adobe.com)
The Brief
This aim of this brief is to explore the idea of space by incorporating your experience of long exposures with night time photography. Create this image using at least one form of additional artificial lighting to light the chosen subject and this image can follow any chosen theme.  Select a location indoors or outside, be sure to use a tripod and experiment with a variety of long shutter speeds to capture then optimize your final image.
 Photographer Research
Tom Hido
Outskirts (toddhido.com)
Tom Hido is a San Francisco based photographer, originally born in Kent, Ohio in 1968.  After studying at the MFA California College of the Arts and Crafts (1996), he also studies at RISD (1991),  BFA Tufts University  and the School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston.  He captures portraits, landscapes and nightscapes in America and began hosting solo exhibitions from 1995 to 2016, with work also included in group exhibitions between 1988 and 2016.   Hido’s work was featured in magazines such as the New York Times, WIRED and Vanity Fair along with multiple series of exhibits at locations from the San Francisco Museum of Art, The Smithsonian and the Guggenheim Museum. Hido had published 6 books including ‘House Hunting’, ‘Outskirts’ and ‘Excerpts from Silver Meadows’. Hido’s approach to his work is to drive around in search of locations that resemble America but that could be found ‘anywhere’ there.  He aims to find something that is ‘insatiable’, even if he doesn’t know what it is he’s looking for.  Tom will discover a house, subject or landscape to capture and create an atmosphere for. His work is created without the intent of showing the connection between photographer and the image, but to create a sense of reminiscence between the viewer and the image.
I chose Tom Hiddo because of the aesthetic of his work as well as his approach to the particular series ‘Homes at Night’ and the Monograph ‘Outskirts’, where he captures suburban streets at night.  Using long exposures to create a misty, soothing atmosphere around subjects using street lights and windowlight.  Some of the images in this series feel lonely and isolated, whilst others feel comforting and safe.  His consideration for complimentary colours and colour temperature further enhance the images, each having their own unique feeling that is provoked between the viewer and the photograph.

a few days ago @jobushnell #Director of #aspexportsmouth wrote this lovely post. Emergency was a great opportunity for me. I wish this year’s participants every success. Repost from @aspexportsmouth • It feels a little ironic to be writing about Emergency in a week when we’ve had to temporarily close the gallery, but here I am reflecting on another challenge back in 2003, & how the team turned it into an opportunity which has impacted on the lives & careers of 83 artists (as of next week)! I think I recall that a scheduled project didn’t get the funding hoped for so we ended up with a gap in our exhibition programme & no money. What we did have was a highly sought after exhibition space & a team of young arts professionals, many of whom were also practicing artists. So, we went to the beach for a staff BBQ to try & work through the problem collectively. What we came up with was Emergency, a show which sought to provide international emerging artists with a genuinely valuable opportunity. This was a time when there were many open submission exhibitions, for which artists paid an entry fee & were then crammed into galleries. We wanted to do better; inviting outstanding artists, curators & gallerists from the public & private sector to select only 8-12 artists for a group show & awarding the prize of a solo exhibition to one artist (or collaboration) the following year. For the first Emergency we were overwhelmed by 350 applications, which inevitably meant an awful lot of disappointed artists, so we also programmed a seminar (free to those who had applied) to demystify the selection process, create transparency & build connections. As we prepare to open our 9th iteration next week, I’m very pleased to say we no longer charge artists for entry, but Emergency remains a cornerstone of our programme. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the 27 selectors who have contributed over the last 17 years & all the amazing artists who have participated. Please click the link in our bio to see details of Emergency 2021.
