Before I got to Illustration I was in Architecture. I was working on a project called “box of piece” which would be 2mx2m. This box would sit on the altar of St. Margaret’s Church here in Portsmouth.
The box of piece is a small space where one can go to relax or pray. Although it’s going to be inside a church it doesn’t need to have a religious meaning. It’s more like a retreat so all people feel comfortable making use of it.
I had to go to the church to take measures, pictures and do some sketching as well. One of our assessments was to make an atmospheric drawing and a measured drawing which would be more detailed.
The church was making renovations when I went there so it was all very messy.
The 1st picture shows my atmospheric drawing. The way the arcs in the walls were made and they show a kind of movement on the wall. So it was a very quick observational sketch.
The second picture shows the altar. Where the boy is standing there is going to be a box in the future, designed by a 1st year architecture student from the university.

This is the work of Bordalo II.
He is a Portuguese artist who makes these amazing pieces out of trash.
He draws and builds series of different animals with all kinds of trash. This trash represents the cause of the animal’s suffering.
The name of this art is “BIG TRASH ANIMALS”.
“Trash Animals is a series of artworks that aims to draw attention to a current problem that is likely to be forgotten, become trivial or a necessary evil. The problem involves waste production, materials that are not reused, pollution and its effect on the planet.”
About the materials: “These works are built with end-of-life materials: the majority found in wastelands, abandoned factories or randomly and some are obtained from companies that are going through a recycling process.”
Damaged bumpers, burnt garbage cans, tires and appliances are just some of the objects that can be identified when you go into detail. They are camouflaging the result of our habits with little ecological and social awareness.”
Bordalo II also protests against the injustice in today’s society through his art and has another kind of art called “World gone crazy” which brings the fear of being controlled by the world in which we live in.

On the 5th of November I went to see the art exhibition at the Aspex Gallery along with my course mates.
The art work was made by university students and each piece had a different meaning and functionality. Some where just to be looked at and others where made for touching and messing around.
Although it was a small exhibition it had a lot of variety.
I particularly enjoyed the paintings. The black paint running down the big piece of fabric making a big stain on the ground was amazing.
About the artwork which you could touch. There was a table which was full of disorganized wool and apart of that was a soundtrack of weird noises and sometimes we would hear quotes that the artist’s grandmother would say (if I remember correctly). So while you would put a piece of wool back in order you would hear these sounds at the same time which was quite relaxing to be honest. I don't know if that was the artist’s goal with this project but it was very nice.
It’s already been a couple weeks since the exhibition so I don’t remember much, but it was really fun an it gave me some ideas of what I might do in the future.
