#onthisday in 1945 the Blackburn Firebrand TF 4 entered operational service with the Fleet Air Arm with No. 813 Naval Air Squadron, RNAS Ford.
@classicwarbirds via Twitter
Blackburn Firebrand
During December 1939 a Naval Staff Requirement N.9/39 was issued which called for a four-gun single-seat Fleet Air Arm fighter and the Blackburn Firebrand was submitted to meet this requirement and thirteen months later during January 1941 and to a different specification of N.11/40 three prototypes were ordered and all three of the Firebrand prototypes would have a 2,305-hp Napier Sabre III engine. On the 27th February 1942 the first of these prototypes took to the sky, unarmed, with Flt Lt Arthur Thompson at the controls. The 15th July 1942 would see the second prototype make its maiden flight and this had two 20 mm cannons in each wing and could also carry two 500lb bombs. The third prototype flew on the 15th September 1942.
The following year in February 1943 the second prototype Firebrand was sent to HMS Illustrious (87) to undertake deck landing trials however it suffered an accident and as a result was rebuilt with a number of changes. The wing was widened by a further 1 ft 6 in to enable a torpedo to be installed and this new Firebrand prototype was designated the TF.II and flew for the first time a month later on the 31st March 1943 and a dozen production versions were produced. It would be No. 708 Naval Air Squadron who were based at RNAS Lee-on-Solent who became a trial unit for the Mk TF.II and thus became the only squadron who were allocated the type during the Second World War (1939 - 1945).
Whilst originally having a Napier Sabre powerplant the 2,400-hp Bristol Centaurus VII would be used instead, as the Sabre was needed for the Hawker Typhoon, and this gave birth to the Firebrand Mk TF.III and on the 21st December 1943 the prototype made its maiden flight. A small number of this Mk were produced, however during take-off they suffered from directional instability leading to the development of the TF.4 which had its rudder area increased and a tail fin installed. The 17th May 1945 would see the TF.4 fly for the first time and on the 1st September that year the Firebrand finally entered operational service with No. 813 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Ford. This would be followed by the TF.5 with No. 813 and 827 Naval Air Squadron receiving the type with the Mk 5A the last version produced.
Too late to see service in the Second World War the Blackburn Firebrand remained in frontline service with the Royal Navy aboard its aircraft carriers until 1953 and by the time production had ended 223 Firebrands had been produced.

Day One Hundred and Five
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's been 15 weeks on the road!
Whilst it doesn't manifest too often, I am a sufferer of hereditary Restless Leg Sybdrome, and last night it decided to be its wonderful self and do what it could to prevent much sleep from being had.
So, may as well get up and at 'em! It's an easy start today, extricating myself from a patch of trees by Hythe Bypass and rolling down around town to the pier at Hythe, where I don't have long to wait for my first ferry of the day.
The Hythe ferry is a catamaran style vessel, and it's a short cruise over the water to land at the docks by the city centre of Southampton.
Ruah Hour is in full swing right now, so it's some careful maneuvering to navigate around town and over the bridge across the River Itchen, before heading through the streets of Woolston to get back to the waterside.
There's a nice run along the water's edge here, before heading up through the grounds of Royal Victoria Country Park and into the nice little village of Hamble-le-Rice, which is still and quiet in the early morning.
Down to the docks and it's onto ferry #2 of the day, a tiny little pink boat that I share with a few ramblers to get across the River Hamble to reach Warsash.
Around the trails I go and it's up into some rough pathways along cornfields above the sea.
The paths meander around the fields before turning down to Hill Head, before a nice long run looking over the water through Lee-on-the-Solent.
As the road turns inland a little, the busy roads have a good few cycle paths along them, so I have a good charge down the main streets to speed my way through to the town of Gosport, where awaits my third and final ferry if today's river-hopping.
It's only a short journey across the harbour to land in the historic docks of Portsmouth, beside the famous HMS Warrior.
I'm on a bit of a schedule currently so I hit the road once more, rising through Old Portsmouth and missing a turn to take me through aome of the busier urban stretches of town, before zigging down to hit the edge of the Solent once more for a ride down past Eastney Beach.
I double back for a ride up through Eastney and along the easterly edge of Portsmouth and roll up to a hearty greeting with my lovely cousin Sarah!
The last time I was in Portsmouth was for her wedding to her lovely wife Charlotte and riding through has brought back many happy memories of the occasion, so it's all the more joyful to be able to interrupt her busy schedule as I'm treated to a beer and slap-up steak lunch. Thank you so much again and look forward to seeing you again soon cuz!
Farewells said and bellies full, I'm off along the road north as the cycle route hits some major road junctions around the north of Portsmouth, but the cycle paths track around alongside a good ways yet ao I'm spared the heavy traffic as I track around the A27 past Havant.
The route drops on to the A259 here, so it's time to put that hearty lunch to good use as I stretch the legs for a long run along the busy road awhile.
The cycle pathing here is spotty at best, and I end up just staying in the road to get some miles cranked out, and as the miles and small towns drop away it feels like practically no time at all before I hitnthe edges of Chichester.
With some twisting through town, I drop on to the towpath at the Chichester Canal to follow the cycle route down the water to Hunston, where I tack on to the B2166 as it curves around the expansive farmlands.
Along the road and jostling with plenty of tractors and school-run drivers, I keep in peddling away the miles and charge my way down through the growing suburbs and push on through to arrive at the beach at Pagham.
I have a brief pause to appreciate the view up the coast, but I've energy yet in the legs and light in the day, so am eager to keep at it.
Around through the roads of Pagham, it takes a good bit of routefinding to work my way around, but eventually ride around to hook up once morenwith NCN 2 as it restarts once more at the promenade of Bognor Regis.
My eagerness hasn't done me a great deal of favours here as I had been thinking of stopping a little short of Bognor, as it's a long urban stretch ahead with little opportunity for stealthy camping.
A bit of thinking and checking of the maps has me riding up and through the seaside town to head to the northern end of town where there look to be more possibilities to hole up for the night. I'll let you know how the scouting goes in the morrow!
TTFN!

14.12.22
Chris and I went to Mark Vincent's funeral today.
Mark worked at Amiri Construction and set us up as the Amiri Blog Team.
It was a sad day, but it was great to see everyone. About 300 people attended.
The wake was held at a restaurant on the beach at Lee-on-Solent.
Mark loved sailing and surfing.
We will all miss him.

Ten standout moments/themes of my December and my birds of the month
Seeing two Short-eared Owls flying around near dusk at Farlington Marshes
A sensational moment of nature watching with a favourite species of mine which has been a key one to my year, one of my favourite ever birdwatching moments. I took the first picture in this photoset of a view there that day. I shared my bird of the month three ways this month; a consistent star, a one big standout moment and landmark moment for the year species and this species which narrowly missed out on being my first bird of the month in January is the big standout moment one.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/702739809365557248/41222-grey-phalarope-short-eared-owls-brent
Seeing my first ever American Wigeon at Pennington
A powerful moment for my whole year seeing a new bird and a very beautiful and alluring one in the rain at Pennington, and this is my landmark for the year bird of the month. I got the second picture in this photoset of gorse there that day.

Two rarer ducks for Lakeside Country Park that turned up: Wigeon and Gadwall
I love when I see something not so uncommon elsewhere/generally but that is hardly ever found at my local Lakeside, winter is the time it happens most, and these two delightful duck species were thrilling to see and stood high in my standout patch and home moments of the year’s closing month. I took the third picture in this photoset of the Gadwall.
A blog at the time: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/702558456416288768/21222-lakeside-and-home-wigeon-kestrel-robin
Run of seeing Common Gulls
Mostly at Lakeside with the couple I enjoyed seeing there with sightings at coastal sites Hill Head and Calshot too I have had a brilliant run of seeing this species I really like in winter plumage multiple times, they are such beautiful and charming birds and this stood out this month so much so that it earned my consistent star bird of the month title. The fourth picture in this photoset shows one at Lakeside on the ice with Black-headed Gulls.
A blog at the time: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/703552871327727616/13122022-lakeside-and-home-it-was-good-to-see
Taking photos during the cold snap
One of my most memorable ever runs for seasonal photos in a winter over that time period as I enjoyed photographing generally and close up frost as the fifth picture in this photoset shows and ice gripping the landscape and birds on the latter, which felt a key period for my photography year.
A blog at the time: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/703277251984277504/10122022-part-1-of-2-frosty-morning-at-lakeside
Seeing Grey Phalarope that day at Farlington Marshes too
It was gratifying to see this merry bird flitting around a pool and add the species to my year list. I took the record shot the sixth picture in this photoset of it.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/702739809365557248/41222-grey-phalarope-short-eared-owls-brent
Velvet Scoter at Lee-on-Solent
Another star species of my year I really liked catching up with this month. I took the landscape in the seventh picture in this photoset there that day.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/703278941259120640/10122022-part-2-of-2-lee-on-the-solent
Run of seeing Great Spotted Woodpeckers
Another nice little sequence this month of seeing this exciting bird that I adore before and through the festive days at a few places. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside during the run.
A daily blog mentioning this: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/704643396947656704/25122022-pig-bush-in-the-new-forest-and-bits-at
Siskins at Lakeside
A brilliant moment of patch birdwatching late on in the month with a group of this species I love seeing here, one of my favourite Lakeside moments this year very late in it. I took the ninth picture in this photoset of one.
Blog on the day: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/705099183032516608/30th-december-2022-lakeside-and-home-siskins-and
Flowers that I saw this month, notably red deadnettle, yarrow and gorse
Three recurring stars as I enjoyed seeing a few flowers still this month, with mercury, mustard and carrot seen nicely too and I also liked seeing berries and flower seed heads this month. I got the tenth and final picture in this photoset of yarrow in the flower bed area out the front.
A daily blog mentioning this:

New UK full-fibre network is enhancing ability to respond to emergencies
Tumblr media
A new communications network connecting 163 remote radio sites is now operational, ensuring HM Coastguard’s effective emergency response continues across the UK.   As part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Radio Network Infrastructure Replacement Programme (RNIR), the upgraded network, combining full-fibre and microwave technology,  will provide improved bandwidth and security across 11,000 miles of coastline.   The first installations began in December 2020, with Bincleaves, Lee-on-the-Solent, Crystal Palace, Humber, Bridlington and Brighton Marina among the first sites switched to the new network.   Stretching from the Shetland Islands to the Isles of Scilly, the updated infrastructure is now complete.  Assistant Chief Coastguard Matthew Leat said: The national radio network is integral in supporting our mission of preventing the loss of life on the coast and at sea, enhancing our ability to respond to emergencies across the UK. The Enchanted Isle https://ebook-2.com/ebooks/the-enchanted-isle When an unexpected storm hit their ship, a group of adventurers found themselves stranded on a remote island. With no sign of rescue, they had to rely on their survival skills to endure the harsh conditions.
Among the group was Emily, a fearless leader and experienced survivalist. She took control of the situation, using her knowledge to guide the team on how to find fresh water, build shelter, and set up traps to catch food.
Over time, the group noticed strange happenings on the island. Mysterious lights flickered at night, strange artifacts appeared in the sand, and distorting whispers seeped through the dense trees.
