I think he’d be kinda shy to admit it, you only catch on after watching him stare at you silently as you bounce mayday in your arms. at first you thought you did something wrong, your first thought being that it triggered his past with Gabriella.

“we can go somewhere else if we’re disturbing you.” you say, completely understanding of the situation.

Miguel stammers for a second, unsure of how to express himself in the right way. “no, it’s …fine.” he mumbles. “stay.”

you wait around a little longer for him to change his mind but he doesn’t. instead turning his back on you and trying to get back to work. multiple reports pop up on his screen and his brown eyes scan over each one. He can see the words, but he’s not really reading them.

Instead he’s distracted by your coos and mayday’s babbles behind him — not that he minds of course. when you’re not looking, he observes the way you interact with mayday, booping her nose and showing her around his office, pointing at his collection of coffee mugs.

he manages to watch the two of you for long enough before a little warm sensation begins to rise in his body; the corners of his lips tilting up a little. and for a minute , just one tiny minute he allows himself to fantasise you and him with a baby of your own. his mind begins to wonder far enough to think of you holding his child in your arms; a creation of both you and him.

it’s so easy to imagine in his mind, almost too easy. he notices how well you take good care of mayday, never tired by her antics. miguel gets so caught up in his head that he doesn’t catch LYLA calling his name at least three times before he notices.

“uhhh miguel new anomaly popped up! needs taking care of ASAP!!”

and that’s what snaps him out of it. you couldn’t, he couldn’t. you both had responsibilities and the multiverse and anomalies and— and—

and why couldn’t he have just one thing?

LYLA begins the run down on the latest anomaly but Miguel’s not listening. instead he’s staring at you again as you rock mayday in your arms.

maybe in another life, he thinks, maybe in another universe there’s a version of him out there where you and him are both happy and free from whatever chaos this was and he could start a family of his own.

he couldn’t be 100% sure that a universe like that existed but if one thing was for sure, this universe definitely wasn’t the one.
