High Schooler Types

Now that I'm nearing the end of Siblings of War [sniffles], there's one more short, serious story I want to write before trying my hand at some Greek comedy. (Gotta balance out these tragedies. Plus, I'd really like to prove that I can write humorous stories before the comedy book comes out!) So, this leads me to the types of high schoolers I see the different immortals. Please don't mind the lack of Zeus etc. They're the adults in this au. He'd be terrorizing EVERYONE if he was a high schooler too.

Athena - the smarty pants. (Naturally) Class/school president/like she basically is the assistant principal at this point and somehow still a student.

Ares - the confused one. (No offense, Ares) Expectation: cool guy/bad boy Reality: good student who gets into fights more than he wants.

Hermes - class clown. Pranks every single person in school (no, the janitor is not safe).

Artemis - the athlete. Mainly, she's the archer, but she's also signing up for every hike and nature walk that she school is offering.

Apollo - nerd/affectionate. (Athena + music and art classes) I think that describes it as well as I ever could.

Hephaestus - robotics class lover. He's spending the whole class sketching new inventions.

Dionysus - theater kid. He's paying 0 attention to anything and is 100% planning another play in the middle of the quiz he's flunking.

Aphrodite - popular girl. Everybody loves her and she loves that too. It does doesn't get to her head at all, but she's not a mean girl at least.

Persephone - goth(?) I don't have a set characterization for her yet, so this'll be fun to maybe try. Could change in a couple weeks, though.

Thanatos - dork/also affectionate. A little vampirey (this is now a word) in his paleness/they aren't sure if he's alive or not/secret sweetie and good buddy.

Aloadae - the school bullies. As in, I actually don't know why I haven't seen them be this before. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

A Personal Head canon

tl;dr: Ares doesn't care for doing divine punishment because it's boring so he cultivates the reputation of being a violent psycho that puts fear into everyone so he doesn't have to go smiting.

Alright, most people are aware of Ares' reputation for being a ruthless, bloodthirsty, violent warmonger in Greek Mythology (or diet Khorne if you play WH40K). He literally has Strife, Fear, Dread, and Bloodshed follow him where ever he goes and he Loves them all more than most of the Gods on Mount Olympus (Aphrodite, Hestia, Dionysus, and depending on the mood Artemis excluded) But another thing about Ares is that he has almost no myths of showing his divine wrath off the battlefield unless they involve his children getting hurt, which in that case you better have Athena and/or Zeus on your side or your ass is grass. Which is kind of weird when reading about how...petty Gods can be over slights. So a Head canon I propose is...Ares doesn't care about enforcing the divine order of punishing hubris because to him there's no honor in killing mortals off the battlefield and it distracts him from training with his sons and the Amazons but he can't exactly let hubris go unpunished or else risks making Olympus look weak. So...he instead cultivates a reputation that is so scary, so horrifying, so dreadful that he makes it so that even the idea of showing the tiniest iota of hubris towards him is something that is considered hopelessly dumb. Which considering that his sons are the personifications of Fear and Dread probably makes that job infinitely easier for him making it so he doesn't have to waste time smiting people.

Percy finally having enough and being pissed off with a God who doesn’t care about his children, insulted his friends, ruined their quest and wants to start an unnecessary war where he has nothing to lose? Warrior Penelope stuff cause I've been listening to too many EPIC genderbent covers, and I wanted to give my take on it (also cuz I kinda want to draw it one day)

- Ares as Penelope's patron, absolutely! But Ares didn't have a huge cult in Sparta, although he wasn't hated. So my lore take version thing is that ATHENA wanted to be Penelope's patron (she had already an eye on Ody kinda) but Ares saw his chance, got to it first and became attached to Penelope without wanting to admit it, also because she saw the good and useful in him. Athena still watches over Penelope (especially after her and Ares platonically break up, which she finds really stupid) and is the one who does her best to protect Ithaca while she's gone. She's by Ody's side while he misses his wife and is mostly the reason why the Suitors hadn't taken over yet.

- To get Ares to realize his mistake, Athena tricks him into helping Telemachus defeat Antinous in Little Wolf because free bloodshed, only to end up sensitized by Telemachus because holy shit, my friend's son is here almost dying to this ASSHOLE who thinks he's so much stronger than MY friend the queen and even me like who tf does he think he is. Athena makes Ares fucking rational for once. And maybe even Aphrodite, as well, gets some damn sense in his mind like "they love each other like you and I and my girl is doing her best to get home you're going to apologize rn"

- ctimene holds a claymore double her height with no problems

- penelope is more "cold ruthless" than Odysseus, in a way that she's still poised (until the end or when she's really brought to her knees which is disturbing) while doing merciless stuff. She's emotionless a lot more (just on the surface)

- Ares was the one to give Penelope the idea of going to war instead of Odysseus, for obvious reasons. And Pen is really a mastermind among the Greeks ofc

- Ares and Pen fought in their My Goodbye version because she "held back her power while her friends got devoured" "she didn't even fight Polyphemus, didn't even TRY to kill him" "hid behind her wits to get things done". Because when fighting Polyphemus, she knew that if she tried to kill Polyphemus while he was asleep, they'd be stuck in that cave forever (like in the real Odyssey). And knew that fighting while her friends got killed would slow them down and probably get more people dead. And when they ran away, she didn't go back to kill the Cyclops even if she could've because of yes, mercy, but also because she would've awakened all the other Cyclops and sailing away was faster, better. Ares deemed this cowardice. Crazy thing, since one of the most important things to him is courage.

- Ares overstimates Penelope's power. Like, yes, she's exceptional, but still HUMAN. With her limits. He hasn't dealt with a human personally in years so he doesn't understand this, so his expectations are ridiculously high, which ends up breaking Penelope.

- During 600 strike, Penelope can actually breathe underwater and not hold her breath for such a long time and be fine because she's half naiad (yes, they are fresh water nymphs but still). Also this may make her even stronger around water (to a certain degree, she's still very mortal)

- calypso is pansexual

Greek Dances

...Another random thought. Just bear with me please. What if the Olympians had certain dance styles that are from our time that were their favorites (in other words, I'm not just saying, they dance. I want specifics)? Here's what I came up with.

Athena - River dancing because her feet can do whatever they want while her hands are free. Now, she can read a book or work on weaving (or stab someone. The options are limitless). I'm just imagining this plus whatever she's holding.

Ares - Paso doble because it's fiery and I can see him pulling off the passion you need to make it look convincing. Besides, he can do it with Aphrodite and she's the only one who gets him to like dancing anyway. This would be the two of them.

Aphrodite - Tango because it's spicy. She does this with Ares any and every chance she gets. Doesn't even matter if they've got other stuff going on. I can see it playing out exactly like this video, including the people watching being the Olympians.

Hermes - Quick step because...well, it's quick. Still actually not quick enough for him, but he'd fly through it. If you put this at 2x speed, this is what I had in mind.

Artemis - Hip-hop has a rough enough edge that I can see it working for her. She could be outside, hunting and then just randomly start doing this when the thud of the animals hitting the ground makes a nice beat.

Apollo -Modern/lyrical/contemporary dance (or whatever this is) because it seems very athletic, artsy, and also very dramatic. Apollo, the athletic, artsy, drama queen is how I see him.

Hestia - Ballet because it's very proper and elegant. She's so pure that she could be the perfect ballerina. It's probably the only time she isn't working with the hearth too. This would be her.

Demeter - Contemporary because I feel like this one is so expressive and she'd really need it to get out her frustration (let's be real. Her "life" pretty much has sucked since forever). Let her have some emotional release in the form of this (extra points if Persephone is the one with her)

Zeus - Jazz because it's a combination of grace and athleticism...actually, because he can either do jazz alone or with a partner and it's got just enough flair that his ego will be inflated. He might have regular one-man shows like this. He does jazz hands way too much.

Poseidon - Hivinau mostly because it's from an island (Tahiti to be precise. I'll be including it in a book next year!) and I see him always being on the beaches. So, he can do this with some people and nymphs.

Hades - Tap because he can seem really subdued at first and mild-mannered as he gets in these clean taps, then just shock his family by being amazing out of the blue. So, this would be him.

Hera - Waltz, particularly something like a traditional waltz since it supposedly can't be danced without a partner. Just seems to fit with her. She can pretend that she has her happy marriage while doing this.

Dionysus - Sorta tap, but specifically the kind that Ray Bolger and Dick Van Dyke sometimes did where it looked like they were out of it. This is what he'd be doing after a few too many drinks.

Hephaestus - Macarena because one of his siblings taught it to him and now he loves it (but he WILL deny it with his very being if questioned.) Sometimes, after a long day of crafting, he can be caught listening to music and doing this.
