I think there's something to be said for fanfiction that loves canon in a way that’s rude. Like thank you for this wonderful thematic tragedy made out of this character’s entire arc ending in death, it was emotionally and intellectually moving, but also fuck you fuck you fuck you they live, this time and every time they live, they never died, their flaws are not their undoing, actually they have no flaws, actually they save everyone, actually who cares about a story, any story, where this one dies, actually i cared about that story so much i made a new one, actually i cared so much i unmade the old one, you gave me morals and i left them for the mortal, but they’re mine now and i will never let them die, actually thank you, actually fuck you, strongly worded letter to follow

say it with me everybody: personal health is completely immaterial to morality, including mental health. leading a mentally unhealthy lifestyle (or what you perceive as a mentally unhealthy lifestyle) does not a bad person make. no one has to socialize, exercise, have healthy coping mechanisms, or lead (what you perceive as) a fulfilling life with fulfilling hobbies in the same way that no one has to go to the doctor to get a broken bone reset. both of those types of management of personal health are likely to be beneficial to the individual, but they are in no way moral requirements or debts owed to society. they do not actually say anything about a person's principles, personality, or actions towards others. additionally, people know themselves and their own situations better than you do. maybe a person judges that the physical and financial toll of going to the doctor outweigh the benefit of getting their bone reset, maybe a person just does not have the capacity to develop healthy coping mechanisms at this point in their life, and yes, maybe a person feels like they are totally fulfilled by "media based" hobbies alone and would feel no difference in their life if they picked up a loom. just like. let people be sick without accusing them of being representative of the lazy, degenerated state of modern society.

It actually aches my heart thinking about how alone Giyuu must feel. Especially when Sanemi and Obanai make it extremely clear that they don’t like him, and refuse to get along with him.

So when you ask him if he wants to have tea with you after training, he’s already quick to brush you off because his heart is guarded like a fortress now. And no matter how much he wants to say “yes” the words don’t rise in his throat as his lips move to speak them.

And maybe it’s because he doesn’t think he’s deserving of your kindness, or your time? You’re always talking to him, despite the fact he often provides far less in return. One word responses to the flurry of questions and stories you share with him— spending your time indulging him when you could be off talking to any of the other pillars.

So he finds himself sitting down opposite you at the small table that’s set up overlooking the garden. Folding his legs beneath him as you pour warm tea into the cup that’s already sitting in position— as though you already knew he would come.

And he indulges himself. Listening to you talk until the sun falls behind the trees and basks the land in hues of tangelo and amythyst. Upset at himself that he’s let you give everything, while he’s given you nothing in return.

But when it’s time to leave and you reach up to bring him into a comforting hug he stands stoic in front of you. Feeling the warmth from your skin radiate through him as though the sun still hangs high in the sky. It’s like you do something to him that he can’t explain as tears begin to clump in his lash line, blanking his vision as he tries desperately to blink them away. And no matter for how long you both stand there, or how long he cries— Giyuu still can’t bring himself to wrap his arms around you to return the hug.

Because he truly believes he’s undeserving of your kindness.
