What is Ikemen Sengoku: Eien?

Ikemen Sengoku: Eien (Eternal Bonds) is a new application for Ikemen Sengoku, using updated UI and architecture to modernize it and serve as a continuation for the story of Ikemen Sengoku. Act 3 will continue in the new app, and Act 2 sequels for current characters are also being planned to be included in Eien going forward.

Why is it being made?

According to the dev team, the current Ikemen Sengoku app is showing its age. In April of 2022, the app was inaccessible for approximately one month due to server issues caused by unauthorized third party access to the game's servers which caused damage to user data. Although steps have been taken to update the systems and strengthen security, there is only so much that can be done with a program that's 10 years old. A complete revamp of the existing app will take too much resources and time. Therefore, the decision was made to create a new app using more moden practices and capability.

What are the features of Eien?

Eien is presumably going to be modeled after the Ikemen Prince and Ikemen Villains apps. A list of features is below:

My room/avatar customization that allows for freely placing avatar items

A bond system with fully voiced stories

A gacha system with cards and avatar gachas similar to Ikemen Prince/Villains. This also includes a beginner gacha with standard cards that you can select

There are further improvements to presentation with things like blinking sprites, among other improvements, in order to improve immersion

When will Eien be available?

Eien will be released in the fall. No conrete date is available yet. Preregistration is currently ongoing.

Will Eien have old stories?

It is planned for all routes to be ported to Eien eventually, but not all of them will be available at launch. Some will be available at launch, while others will be added over time. As of right now, there are no specifics on which routes they are or what the timeline for this is.

After all existing routes have been ported, there are plans to add an archive where assets from Ikemen Sengoku can be viewed in Eien. At the moment, it is unclear what is meant by assets.

What is Act 3? What is the plot?

In Act 3, a new enemy force the Ashikaga army faction seek to travel back in the past in order to change the childhood of the warlords. You, as the protagonist, will experience conflict as you witness the pain of their childhoods with your own eyes. This is a tale of the past, present, and future, about a search for happiness that transcends time itself. Act 3 is a tale of love more dramatic than anything before, as you find yourself shaken by the appearance of new enemies that leave you questioning your values.

Act 3 will begin with Nobunaga's Continuation Route.

Continuation routes also feature route splits. One of the route splits will contain CGs of the suitor as a child.

Furthermore, after fulfilling certain conditions when finishing a Continuation Route (likely to be maximum points, just like getting epilogues currently), you can obtain a story where you marry the suitor. This story also contains a CG.

What will happen to the old app?

Starting from fall, the old Ikemen Sengoku app will only have reruns. By the end of December 2025, the app will stop updating entirely, with no more events running at all.

Can you transfer your data over? What will be transferred between the old app and Eien?

There is a data transfer capability but not everything can be transferred. There is a campaign going on where your total Beauty and Glamour will grant you items in the new app based on how much of each you have, and some things will transfer. At this point, we don't have any information on what will be transferred to the new app. More information will come at a later date.

What about the English version?

I don't know anything about that at this point, it's best to wait for official announcements. Please also do note that all info that I have is specific for the JP version, I do not know if it applies to the EN version.

I want to tell you a story today.

Let me tell you about how I was finally able to finish a collection of incredibly specific 20+ year old elusive esoteric booklets, after years of looking for them.

No, no, wait, don't scroll past yet. Hear me out.

Is this the most interesting thing ever? It depends. Will it do numbers on tumblr? Not at all. Does this story sound like the statement from someone in The Magnus Archives? Absolutely.

"Statement begins", and all that.

Circa 2001-2002, I was a young girl and asked my dad for a little booklet on witchcraft. As young girls do.

It was part of a collection which was released in newspaper stands and, in my memory, it was something that you had to pay a bit extra to get alongside a specific newspaper, one that is rather informal. My mom also asked for one of the booklets, about past lives. My dad got them both when they released.

I was very interested in my little witchcraft booklet, I found the stuff both fascinating and recognizable. Any Latine can probably tell you about the very particular blend we have, especially in the outskirts of big cities, of brujería, curandería, santería and original people's cultural influences. The book reflected this in a way that sounded familiar and also gave new insights.

One day, though, my booklet disappeared.

I never had evidence of what happened but I had, at the time, a friend from school who was from a very religious family. She kept warning me about the book and how what I was doing was wrong and dangerous and how I would eventually "find Jesus". She just stopped mentioning it once the book mysteriously vanished. So, I don't have hard evidence that my book was taken, but I don't have much doubt.

I grew up and my interest for these types of things evolved to encompass different forms of folkloric and cultural insights, especially on how they represent different social contexts. I have a very particular and maybe conflicting view on spirituality but, in any case, these things interest me.

I also became an editor and I love peculiar publications. The history of publication of something, especially rare, can say a lot about its context.

I ended up reading and buying other books with esoteric themes, but that little booklet resonated still, because I could never find again something that spoke so directly to what I had grown up with.

There are a lot of publications about European and North American practices, very often the most popular folklore calendars are strictly set in the Northern Hemisphere. Some Latine authors tend to blend different things from abroad in their books, rather than talk about just us.

This little booklet was a one of a kind, I realized. In its humble and unapologetic simplicity, it contained the voice of who we were.

So, I set to find it again.

My mom had kept her booklet, the one about past lives. It had the name of the collection in it (Revelaciones), the name of the publisher (Agedit) and a list of all the books in the collection at the end. They were 12 in total. There was not a single author name in sight.

The list includes: Numerology, Runes, Past Lives, Modern Witchcraft (the one I had), Chiromancy, Tarot, Dream Interpretation, Crystals, Tasseography, Graphology, Chinese Zodiac and Astrology.

For a long while, my search only resulted in sold out listings of one or two copies. I also came across additional findings that made my search difficult (this is where I get nerdy in a publishing way):

These books had been out of print for almost 20 years, when I started searching.

These weren't really "books" per se, they were published as such (they had an ISBN) but were sold as if they were magazines.

They were never distributed to bookstores and didn't have any new editions or reprints: they had, most likely, only one print run for each booklet.

The ISBN of the book I had didn't show results online.

I found out the reason for these two points through an archived government official bulletin: the publisher went bankrupt in august of 2003.

Given that there were 12 books, they would have taken between 4 months and a year to complete the collection, depending on how often they came out, so the collection ended shortly before the publisher closed down.

Because of the way in which they were distributed (through newspaper stands) they were given by consignment, meaning the booklets that weren't sold were given back to the publisher when the next issue came out.

Due to the fact that the publisher went bankrupt shortly after, it's highly unlikely that remaining copies were sold as such, it's much more likely that they were sold as paper for re-purpose.

Especially since 2001-2003 was a Bad Time for the economy of Argentina. A Really Bad Time.

The books were edited before the book law changed to make mandatory the use of a bibliographical index, so the books themselves don't have the information now required to register a book printed inside them.

There is not a single author name anywhere.

I found out that the publisher had a very wide variety of magazines of different subjects, including a kids' magazine of the channel I started watching anime in as a kid. Between Captain Tsubasa and cartomancy there's just one step.

So, the only avenues left were patience and book sellers who dealt with used copies of both books and magazines.

After some years of searching, in 2022, the book appeared in two different online sellers: one sold it alone and the other in a set with other 8 books from the collection, including the one my mom had. The book sold alone seemed in worse condition and the set had a lower price per unit.

So, I bought the set of 9.

They were in pretty good condition, all things considered. These books were not meant to last. The paper weight vs cover weight ratio is bonkers (the cover is magazine thin), the binding is poor and the books are almost all slightly different sizes. They also have different fonts for the titles. From an editing point of view, they're atrocious.

That only made them so much more interesting to me.

Only one of the books I got in that set had an explicit author: Chinese Zodiac. I assume that one was commissioned to the person whose name appears in it. I did google the man and he doesn't seem to be much of a writer of the subject anymore, he specializes in Tai Chi and Kung Fu, apparently. Seems that his expertise only extended to that one book in particular.

The rest, though. The rest are a mystery.

I don't know if they were written by the publishing team or one person, but they feel like there was one person behind them, for the way they're worded and how they talk to the reader. Or, at least, a different person for different books. They're not detached enough to feel like the work of a team investigation project.

They are also more involved than a newspaper stand collection has any right to be. Talking about Saint Germaine and Cornelio Agrippa and geological specifics of crystal structure. At age 12-13 I wouldn't have paid attention to that but now, knowing what it takes as an editor to put this out and knowing they were a sinking publisher, I've got to respect the craft.

However, the ISBN situation is a NIGHTMARE. The collection changed the ISBN format for these books once every four books.

I could have stopped there. I had my original book, it was just as I remembered, and I got 8 extra books, some with subjects I was very interested in.

However, the tarot book was not included in the set. And that was one I really wanted to get. So, the search continued.

In 2023, my sister gifted me the tarot book. It was from a seller who only had that one and it was in worse shape than the rest. It feels like it was used more than the others. Something was definitely spilled on it. Someone might have learned with it for a long time.

It was very in-character with what I knew from the collection that it focuses solely on Tarot de Marseilles, which is the one most commonly used here (the cover of the book has an RWS deck, so whoever made the cover did not consult with the mysterious author, who used Marseilles iconography inside).

But, again, unnamed author. And the ISBN situation wasn't getting any better. The format of the ISBN in the tarot book matched the one in the crystals book, which gave me an idea of the order list being more or less accurate. Emphasis on "more or less", you'll see.

At this point, I was deep into this. I had 10/12 books, I thought I might as well try to complete the collection, right? How hard could it be?

Well, the two books left were the most elusive of the bunch: chiromancy and dream interpretation.

During my years researching these books, the chiromancy book showed up in pictures just once. I knew what it looked like, but I hadn't seen it for sale. Ever.

That is, until it popped up in early 2024.

I made a post about it at the time. This one was the most expensive of the bunch (not crazy expensive, not even the price of a brand new novel, but expensive in comparison with the others) but it was the first of its kind I had seen in all my years looking, so I got it as soon as I could.

By this time, some repeats had shown up here and there of the books I already had, including a Tarot book in better shape, but I had to draw the line somewhere. There are some that seem to be easier to find than others. Maybe because they were more popular back then, so they didn't get returned to the publisher to turn into pulp.

The dream book though? I still had never seen it.

Not a photo, not an old listing, nothing. I had no frame of reference for what that one looked like, only the title listed in the other books (Interpretación de sueños).

I started losing hope on that one. I started wondering if maybe it had never been released in the first place. Or that maybe it was the most popular one, so people kept it more often than selling it. After all, dream interpretation can be more mainstream a subject than palmistry or tasseography.

The one thing making me doubt that it was unreleased, the one thing keeping me going, was that the last two books on the list (astrology and Chinese zodiac) were listed in an incorrect order until the 11th book. Remember I said the list was "more or less" accurate? Things can't be that simple with this collection.

The list at the end of almost all of the booklets makes me think that astrology was meant to be the last one, but it ended up coming out as the 11th, and they changed the list order upon its release. Maybe the only known author who was commissioned, for the Chinese zodiac book, needed more time to turn in the manuscript.

I thought that, if they had taken the time to change the end list by the 11th book, even if there were only two left, they would have probably removed the dream one had it not come out as planned.

So, it had to exist.

Last week, I was thinking about the books again, as I have done for years, with my hopes of finding the last one almost non existent.

I decided to check in MercadoLibre and wasn't finding it. I went on google and wasn't finding it. I went to google images and nothing. I changed some of the words in the google images search here and there and...

IT SHOWED UP

It had been listed for sale 6 days prior to my search. By a bookstore called "Gluck". My German is beginner-level but I'm pretty sure that means "luck" (at least "glück" does). What are the odds?

The price was pretty cheap but the shipping was a bit steep, so I looked if they had a used copy of Lestat I was looking for, to make up for the shipping cost. I wanted an old Lestat to go with my well-loved 90s edition of IWTV. Turns out, they had an old copy of Lestat, for cheap, because it had what looks like a bite in a corner of the cover. A dog bite, I mean, or cat, not sure which. Perfect. Glück indeed.

So, last week, it finally arrived. The last piece of the puzzle. The dream book.

Turns out, the title was wrong all along.

The list had it as Interpretación de sueños and it was actually called El significado de los sueños. No author, but a promising table of contents. It wasn't the subject I was most interested in but the variety of topics covered is a lot more interesting than I expected.

Still, the most important thing here is that I FINALLY HAVE THE WHOLE SET.

Some insane things about the collection, now that I can look at all of it for myself:

Almost all are mismatched in size

Some have printing mistakes (for example, Astrology has cut marks and extra blank space that wasn't removed)

The last one is wider

The first one doesn't have the list of books

The one about past lives has a different title in the spine than in the book

The one about dreams has a different title in the list than in the book

The one about crystals has a different title in the list than in the book and spine

The one about tasseography has also a different title in the list than in the book and the spine

Most of the cover photos seem to be from different sources, I always believed the one my original book had was taken by the people making the book, because the little owl on it is a Kinder toy I had as a kid

I can now tell you how the ISBN works, so you can look at the madness with me.

The first 4 books have a different ISBN for each, with a change in the part of the ISBN that signifies particular book.

It goes from 8 to 11 and the book with the number 9 is listed as 3rd and not 2nd in the interior list (in my memory, it was 3rd, because that was my mom's book and mine came after, but who knows). All of these have a side bar code with the number 00001.

The next batch of 4 continues having a different ISBN for each book, from books 12 to 15, but the side bar code number also changes, going from 5 to 8, signifying the number of the book in the specific collection.

The last batch of 4 all have the same ISBN, as if they were the same book, with the number 22 (what happened to 16-21? who knows), but they do continue with the side bar code numbers from 9 to 12.

It's wild. I wouldn't have been able to predict anything from this.

Still, here they finally are. I have collected them all. And here's the one that started the interest for this quest.

Put together, they constitute a pretty vast amount of pages. The booklets by themselves look rather short but, together, it's a pretty impressive amount of stuff, and quite detailed for each topic.

I still don't know who wrote them, if it was one person or several, or if they even remember working on them, since it's been about 22-24 years since they came out and it seems to have been the dying breath of a now defunct publisher that didn't specialize in the subject.

But I hope that, wherever they may be, they know some people appreciated their work. Because these little messy books have a lot of personality and represent where I come from better than other more polished publications have ever been able to.

Ooh, care to share what are your opinions on the personality distinctions between pre-crisis Dick and Jason?

Okay so, I don't know how coherent my thought process here is going to be so bear with me, but there's a few things I want to acknowledge first and foremost because they play a SIGNIFICANT part in how each character is, well, characterized. I'm also going to try as best as I can to compare them at similar ages but, well, if you know anything about comics and also in light of some of the points I bring up in this post, I think you'll understand why that's so difficult.

Additionally, look. There are like... soooo many comics, yeah? I'm going to focus on characterization specifically in Detective/Batman comics because frankly I don't want to hunt down examples from every comic he's appeared in or have to deal with potentially conflicting characterizations from different titles, there's enough of that in just these two.

The biggest reason I say is that at the time that Robin was originally added to Detective comics (#38), it was still something of an anthology of multiple stories in one book. Batman's adventures took up something like 11-13 pages and were completely self-contained. The Batman comic was started, if I'm not mistaken, after Detective #39, and while it is (almost) completely devoted to Batman, it also contains multiple stories in one issue and each is largely self-contained. Conversely, by the time that Jason is introduced, most storylines bounce back and forth between Detective Comics and Batman, and often last for several issues each. It also takes up more of the Detective comics pages (I wanna say something like at least 16?) and only has 2-3 stories (often, actually, Green Arrow & Black Canary stories, lmao.) (If I'm not mistaken, I believe both Detective Comics and Batman released monthly but two weeks apart from each other, so you'd be able to get your Batman fix every two weeks? Or at least, that's how it was before they started bouncing storylines back and forth, but I have to assume it's something similar given the consistency with which the stories zig-zag.)

This means that generally speaking we spend a lot more time developing characters later on in the comics. Dick, for a long period of his run, I feel has a more implied personality than a displayed one, but what he does is also heavily informed by his role in the comic and his relationship with Bruce. When Jason comes in, his role and relationship is different and that also informs his characterization.

So, I guess, let's start with that.

So, first of all, Dick is never* Rarely referred to by Bruce in Pre-Crisis with any familial language, Also Rarely* does he refer to Bruce with any. We often like to use the modern comics' interpretation of their relationship as father and son, especially since DC has pivoted their market onto their superhero "families," and I'm not going to argue that the idea of raising a child from the age of, say, eight or nine up until adulthood is pretty parental. I've made these arguments before, but it's important context to understanding his "personality" that he's not treated like that in the actual writing.

*Edit: I stand corrected on the "familial language" point. Unfortunately it looks like some of the issues listed here are ones I'd skipped because the image quality in the archive I was using was bad enough to give me a headache. Still, I don't really think he feels like a "child" in a majority of the cases that aren't literally centered on the idea of him being a child.

Dick was, from the get go, introduced to be Batman's partner, so his joining was a foregone conclusion they didn't waste too long deliberating. He was originally just supposed to be under Bat-Witpro but then Bruce activated turbo mode on his trauma projection beam and the rest is history:

As far as either of them are concerned, they are each other's "best/closest friends," and as far as the narration uses, Dick is Bruce's aide or sometimes protege. It's not until some, what, few hundred comics later I think*? They'll start referencing him as Bruce's ward more often. *In Detective at least. Apparently I wasn't searching through Batman thoroughly enough and missed a few things, per above link.

On a more... practical sense, you could say that Dick is the Watson to Bruce's Sherlock, albeit with an added flair of "training him to also be like Sherlock" kinda deal. This, imo, is reinforced with how often you see Bruce smoking a pipe while the two of them are talking, usually with Dick asking a lot of questions and Bruce answering them pretty authoritatively:

Contrast it to Jason, who literally the very next story after he's taken in by Bruce, starts referring to him as his "new father."

Detective Comics#526 (As a slight aside, another point to the, I suppose arguably "personality" differences here is that Bruce was going to send Dick back to Haly's, but Dick wanted to stay. Meanwhile Jason was the one suggesting he'd go back to Sloan Circus, and was diverted by Bruce's offer. He does also run away and go back to the circus later but we'll get to that)

Detective Comics #527 - I'd originally had two cuts from this issue including the previous one where Jason's saying "Batman's like a father to me now, I have to help him" but I ran out of images and decided if I'm sacrificing one that was the best option. Yes, I could theoretically use an image software to fuse some of these together. it's 3 AM, I'm not doing that.

Now, a not insignificant part of the above is later framed as Jason trying to prove himself so that Bruce will let him join him in his fight, but I'm going to be honest, given that Batman #361 (immediately prior to the above) has Jason enjoying an acrobatic routine with Bruce and then having a slight melancholy flashback about his parents being dead, I'm more inclined to believe that Jason scared of losing another parental figure so soon after losing the last ones, and he's clinging on to Bruce with all of his might because he's a scared child who's recently been uprooted from everything he's ever known.

It's not quite explicit, but as Jason notes that Batman had some clever tricks but that he'd needed Jason's help to win, it feels like Jason's trying to take control of the situation. His parents' deaths at Killer Croc's hands (Which were, tbh, largely Bruce's fault imo. He asked them, average & untrained civilians, to help him snoop around Croc's extortion outfit, and even lashed out at Dick when he suggested it was too dangerous for them. Yes, Bruce has a lot on his mind, but still) were completely out of Jason's hands. He couldn't even try to save them and didn't even find out they were dead until he was trying to warn Batman about a plot against him and overheard Batgirl telling Bruce about it, and, well, gestures above. He can't not want to save what little he does have left.

What all of the above really adds up to is that generally speaking even in his more "childish" moments, Dick is narratively handled as an adult. Yeah, he makes jokes and is dashingly daring, perhaps a bit more impulsive than Batman and occasionally damsel-ified, but he's not exactly that much more of a punster than Batman and his own quips tend to be.

And, I'll be honest, I can't help but wonder if the contrast between "miniature adult" Dick Grayson and "actually a kid" Jason Todd, is part of why he wasn't very well liked by some readers. After all, look at how a lot of people modernly react to more emotional younger characters like, say, Shinji from NGE or Steven from SU. When Dick is shown being emotional, idk, in the earlier comics it feels much more abbreviated and easy to gloss over. This applies to female characters as well, of course, and generally even moreso, but considering Jason's a boy character I felt relating it specifically to other boy characters who have that issue was more appropriate.

(The above gets worse when he's rebooted, because he IS definitely still framed as a child, with more volatile emotions like a child, but a child who "had to grow up too soon," which STILL reads differently from Dick being written effectively as a small adult.)

Anyways, as a result of this difference I'd like to make something clear: Dick Grayson has always been a far more serious character (personality-wise) than the cheery, bright colors of his costume and the concept of him as a circus performer might make him seem. And yes, even the puns, which at the time Bruce also made all the time. Dick, for the most part, is fairly content with his life until he gets older and starts butting heads with Bruce.

I do feel like in some ways it's a bit harder to really nail down a single, clear personality for him especially in the older comics, because there's not a lot of time spent exploring it, per the whole above thing on less pages and self-contained adventures. Honestly, if anyone wants to add on more panels and a more specific description for Dick, including outside these two titles, please feel free because I've been combing through hundreds of comics trying to find some more tangibly descriptive options for specific traits, but frankly the best panels I've found for him aren't until we get closer to, say, Detective #400 and such, which he's in college during and therefore I think is an unfair comparison.

But fundamentally, the core of Dick's personality is this, repeated at the beginning of nearly every issue, he's supposed to be more spur-of-the-moment and courageous (and quippy, but so is Bruce... until he starts sometimes randomly-but-not-always being a sourpuss about puns during Jason's run????). Where both are people of action, Robin lacks the "adult" patience, and making him a child is pretty much there as a means of excusing his impulsiveness. He's of course still incredibly clever, especially after Batman trained him, and is often sent on undercover missions alone.

And, y'know, an independent streak a mile wide. I would definitely say that in the long run he's a lot more mature than Jason, point blank, and he's pretty much got a handle on this whole crime fighter thing right outta the box as soon as he's trained up.

Jason though? Jason is frequently and consistently denied parts of Bruce's life in a way I would argue makes him crave a more dependent (and reliable) relationship:

If I had to really draw a strict line between the two on their biggest difference it's insecurity. Jason is full of it, and even after he becomes Robin he hinges so much on his relationship with Bruce and proving that he's important to Bruce, that he ultimately cripples is other relationships. (See: Rena)

Honestly, it's so weird to see Jason's writing here sometimes, because he'll have very natural misconceptions and feelings of discontent, and then it feels like it gets artificially tied to the fact that Bruce won't let him be Robin.

On the other hand, It feels very much like Jason won't settle for anything less than Bruce's full attention, and I can't say I entirely blame him: he's a kid and Bruce is all he has. With how much of Bruce's life is consistently upended by his role as a crimefighter... who would want to be only part of the life that gets upended? Who wouldn't want to feel more secure by knowing they aren't just being blown off? ... After all, we have a perfect example of this in Bruce's constant abandonment of Vicki Vale, which runs parallel to Jason's own insecurities.

First, third, and fourth are from Detective #530, second one is from Batman #364

Jason is deeply, deeply insecure, and, with the exception of anger issues (arguably), most of the things Jason gets accused of modernly, are actually more accurate for describing Pre-Crisis Jay: recklessness, a need to prove himself, being a bit of a glory-hog... which is all generally attributed to the fact that he's young, and it's forgivable for it... most of the time.

Honestly, I would go so far as to say that, with the exception of the victim-blamey tone they have about it and his motives, you could argue that if enough of the pre-crisis cases were considered canon then you could almost say they're right in ascribing those traits to him.

Detective #535* which, I'll say you could arguably take some of this with a grain of salt. Jason is hypnotized, but does later mention that he was only hypnotized to act certain ways at certain times and was able to decide for himself what to do outside of them.

But I'm going to reiterate: A lot of it feels like a need to have more control in his life, and a constant presence by Bruce's side. He wasn't there when his parents died, and found out by coincidental timing after the fact. I feel like he does tend to display some separation anxiety from Bruce, and is very worried about losing him.

This is a somewhat decent page about that from Detective #534 after he choked out Ivy (who'd previously been choking him out first) to save Batman:

Despite being really excited to work with Batman, he very quickly learns the drawbacks in ways that cast him with a lot of self-doubt, including the above kidnapping from Manbat, another almost-kidnapping out-of-costume via Chimara, being assaulted because of Crazy Quilt's obsession and hatred for Robin specifically despite having no clue who the villain was and everyone assumes he's the same Robin as there's always been... Consequences Dick didn't struggle with nearly as much or, in some cases, never faced at all.

About my Writing! I write fictional works and currently, am focusing a lot more in urban fantasy, dark medieval fantasy, cryptid horror, whump and futuristic science fiction! My works usually revolve around themes such as epic quests, secrets, adventure, rebels fighting an oppressive system, sibling bonds, acceptance/respect, outcasts, and much, much more! BEFORE the emergence of the modern middle class in America, before video games, before MIRV's, before high school students studied long hours to get into the first college of their choice, before the creation of after-school sports programs that for a fee escort city teen-agers who lack local facilities to ball fields and gyms, a unique and vivid street life for youngsters throbbed in our cities. This earnest volume describes the work and play of children of the working class in the first two decades of this century in a number of cities, including New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.

David Nasaw, a historian who teaches at the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York, has assembled ''Children of the City'' from archives, early reports by journalists and settlement house workers, oral history collections and published reminiscences. He sees urban street life as having been a struggle between reformers and youths, parents and children, police and rowdies, and, in the newsboy era, capital and labor.

Nostalgia is his priority as an author. Few are hurt by the conflicts. Poverty is manageable. The cities, despite overcrowding in working-class districts and a desperate craving for assimilation, are essentially benign places. This oversimplification is a result, no doubt, of Mr. Nasaw's unbridled affection for the period. His romanticizing of events is the price of admission for a glimpse into a way of being young that has vanished.

The distinction at the time between proper activities for boys and girls is intriguing by modern standards, and he describes it effectively. While boys hawked newspapers, peddled fruit, went looking for junk to sell and moved freely through the city, working-class girls were likely to be at home. ''Though many would, before marriage or between marriage and motherhood, work for wages in factories, offices, or retail stores, these were considered but temporary detours on the road to motherhood and housekeeping. There was little the girls could learn on the streets that would prepare them to be mothers and wives,'' Mr. Nasaw writes.

A common expression of the day was ''little mothers,'' to describe the widespread use of teen-age girls as surrogate parents for younger children in the family. Homebound, girls also attended to boarders, kept house and aided in piecework, usually without pay, while boys were on the streets, earning money in more glamorous pursuits.

The newsboy era is a fascinating footnote to the history of our cities, and Mr. Nasaw is at his best with this material. He describes how afternoon and evening editions of newspapers began to outnumber morning editions and required people to sell them. Youngsters could handle the work and for a time were the major distributors for the afternoon dailies. ''The newsies were no exotic breed of city child,'' Mr. Nasaw writes. ''The historical record suggests that selling papers on the streets was a common children's occupation. Hundreds of thousands of boys who grew up in American cities . . . sold papers.''

In 1899 an event took place that would have been perfect for film use by the Dead End Kids, but as Mr. Nasaw points out, it has been a neglected episode. Unhappy with a raise in the wholesale price of Joseph Pulitzer's World and William Randolph Hearst's Journal, New York newsboys, copying the methods of grown-ups' unions, organized a successful strike against these titans of journalism, with devastating effects on the newspapers' circulations. ''The publishers conceded defeat in the second week of the strike,'' Mr. Nasaw writes, ''by offering the boys an advantageous compromise.''

IN some respects, youngsters' street life in the city has been unchanged through this century - young people have played stickball and basketball and jumped rope through several generations. But ''by the 1920s the children of the streets had been pushed to the side by the automobile, which cut off their play and work space, by tougher and better-enforced child labor laws, and by adults who moved into the trades they once monopolized,'' Mr. Nasaw says.

Today's young people are out on the streets with cassette players and stereos. If they listen to the hits on Top 40 radio stations, they probably cannot identify pop stars of only a few years ago, so quickly do trends evaporate in our culture. The material covered by this book is largely forgotten, but, fortunately, David Nasaw has unearthed these colorful pieces from the remnants of our urban landscape.

Interview: Her Lotus Year. Wallis Simpson in China

Wallis Simpson (1896-1986) is often remembered as the wife of King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor. British monarch for less than a year in 1936, Edward preferred to abdicate the throne to be free to marry Wallis, an American woman who was considered unfit for the role of queen consort due to her previous two divorces. Before meeting Edward, Wallis spent a year in China, a period of time around which many rumours have spread. In this interview, James Blake Wiener speaks to Paul French, author of the book Her Lotus Year: China, The Roaring Twenties and the Making of Wallis Simpson (2024). Paul French is a British writer and journalist who worked in Shanghai for many years.

JBW: Wallis Simpson is often remembered for her role in the British abdication crisis of 1936, but Her Lotus Year reframes her as a more complex figure. Paul, what was it which motivated you to reexamine Wallis’ sojourn in China and write this title?

PF: I lived in Shanghai for many years and visitors would often ask about all the infamous rumours surrounding Wallis’s time in the city. The British tabloids particularly repeatedly bring up rumours of her sexual infidelities in Shanghai, suggested involvement in everything from prostitution to gambling rings, liaisons with opium dealers, horse nobbling gangs, posing for pornographic photographs, numerous affairs etc. I thought it was time to look a little closer at these allegations – which did so much to ruin her reputation in 1936 around the time of the Abdication Crisis.

Additionally, the year she spent in China – summer 1924 to summer 1925 – was an incredibly turbulent and politically fractious time of strikes, warlordism, and banditry. It’s a really pivotal year in China’s modern history between the end of the Qing and creation of the republic in 1911 and then the Japanese onslaught on China in 1937. I thought it would perhaps be interesting to show that year and its events through the eyes of someone a western audience perhaps has some familiarity with.

JBW: You have long specialized in Chinese history, and it is clearly a passion of yours. While researching this book, what discoveries or archival findings most surprised you as to Wallis’ time in China? Is there any single discovery or fact that we ought to know about in particular?

PF: Well, the rumours were all false. But, the stories all really did happen, just to other people. The British Intelligence officers who compiled the so-called ‘China Dossier’ on Wallis knew their Shanghai and old Beijing underworlds!

About Wallis herself I think the major revelation to me (the rumours of her in Shanghai never sounded right to me) was that she had come to Hong Kong initially with her husband (her first husband Win Spencer), a commander in the US Navy stationed there. He was a violent drunk who physically beat her repeatedly and she had to escape him. I don’t think that, whatever you think of Wallis Simpson, many think of her as an abused woman forced to flee a violent man into the dangerous hinterlands of 1924 China.

JBW: As a woman on the verge of divorce in a foreign country, Wallis faced the conflicting pressures of social conformity and personal ambition. In many ways, she was concurrently a product of her time and a woman ahead of it. Would it be fair to say that Wallis’ time in China served as a force in a personal transformation that would later color her life as the Duchess of Windsor?

PF: Absolutely. It took her a long time, and a lot of fights and beatings, before she left Spencer in Hong Kong. Her genteel Baltimore upbringing was adamantly against divorce and always assumed the breakdown of a marriage was the woman’s fault. But she finally plucked up the courage and left him. She went to Shanghai thinking she could get a divorce at the US Consulate there. She couldn’t as it transpired, but by then she had made the break and was in China.

After Shanghai, Wallis went to Beijing and fell in love with the ancient capital. It was here she had a genuine and passionate love affair, mixed in diplomatic circles, both foreign and Chinese, lived on a hutong in a charming courtyard house and really transformed into a more cosmopolitan woman able to mix in international society. She also developed a love of Chinese style – cheongsams, jade, embroideries, furniture etc – which stayed with her forever and wherever she lived afterwards.

JBW: Her Lotus Year vividly presents expatriate life in China during the 1920s. You also highlight Wallis’s interactions with other colorful characters. How representative – or exceptional – was Wallis’ experience compared to other Western women in China during the 1920s and 1930s?

PF: Independent western women were surprisingly common in 1920s Beijing. I think there’s a number of reasons for this including the many single (often widowed after WW1) intrepid European and American woman, the extension of the ocean liner routes to northern China, and the fact that in a Chinese city (as opposed to a colony like Hong Kong or a foreign-controlled treaty port like Shanghai) they could be entrepreneurial. They simply weren’t governed by the rules and social conventions of their home countries in Beijing. I think this is similarly why so many gay male aesthetes congregated in Beijing too. It almost became a kind of Asian outpost of the famous Lost Generation we normally associate with Paris in the ‘20s.

JBW: Your background in narrative nonfiction and storytelling is evident throughout this work. How did you balance historical accuracy with crafting a compelling and humanizing portrait of Wallis Simpson in Her Lotus Year?

PF: In my two previous books – Midnight in Peking and City of Devils – I’ve tried to reconstruct true crimes in inter-war China using literary non-fiction, by which I mean that I do all the research and then write it up using the techniques and style of the novelist. But I never invent characters, names, places or events. So I footnote, and list sources. You can check my research. But I want to write compelling narratives that take aspects of Chinese modern history to a wider audience than those who would buy a more straightforward history book. Let’s be honest, Chinese history is tough for many western readers, however fascinated they are by the place and the times – China has a LOT of history, the names can be tough for western readers, the places and events (who does any Chinese history in school in Europe or America?) unfamiliar. But perhaps wrapping it around popular genres like true crime or royal biography I can entice in a wider readership, but always making sure that the China history crowd feel they’re getting something original too.

I really loved Vader´s and Prince Xizor rivalry in old school star wars. Their conflict is different to the ones Vader traditionally has.

Xizor isn´t a military adversary, a jedi or a sith, he is a legitimate leader of a very powerful corporation that serves an important role in developing the construction for death star II but he is also a mafia Don,leader of Black Sun, an undersworld organization that shares intelligence with the rebels and the Empire because he is playing the long game and betting to both sides until there´s a clear winner, Xizor is sure the Empire will win but he is covering all his bases. He is also 300 years old so he has done this in the past with the Republic as well, his race lives for such a long time that he sometimes can get bored.

Xizor fight with Vader is mostly political and strategic, he wants to capture and kill Luke Skywalker for the Emperor in a way to show him his capabilities but also to take Vader´s role in the Imperial court, he is aware Vader is a Sith Lord but he doens´t know Palpatine is one as well and so his chances of getting Vader´s position in particular isn´t a safe bet but the Emperor allowed him to think he had an opportunity because his resources are useful and because he wants to test Vader on his political skills.

Vader prepares to confront Xizor because he doesn´t really want to relly on Black Sun for the death star, knowing all the intelligence he most definitely must be sharing with the rebels but more than that he is aware of Xizor ambitions but he isn´t truly worried about his own position, he is worried about Xizor killing his Son or hurting the Emperor which I find honestly cute, at that moment Luke and the Emperor are the people Vader cares the most about so their protection are his priority :D and so his whole role in this story, shadow of the Empire, is to get into the politics of it all, protect Luke, send Boba Fett and another of his agents to protect Han Solo´s carbonite block and keep an eye on Luke´s shennanigans, both the legitimate imperial politics and the underworld ones to keep his Son safe and to protect the Emperor.

This is an interesting story in which Vader´s foe isn´t fighting him directly but looking to show him innefective in his work as the imperial enforcer and leader of the army to defeat him politically, Vader´s initial reaction is to follow the game, aware of his Master expecting him to do that but once his darling Son and Lando decide to bomb to death Xizor´s Corustcant castle to rescue Leia and for his betrayal of the rebellion there´s clear evidence Xizor is trying to kill Luke and his friends right in front of him, so Vader no longer has to hold back.

Love this because this story is bassically about poor Xizor´s no good bad week with the Skywalker family, Leia spying on his archives, taking his intelligence of the death star, Luke bombing his castle and everything around him which is his style and Vader joining for the sake of protecting his boy but also because he kind of likes Luke´s style of burning everything in his sight even if this brings down all his political plans to deal with Xizor personally but he still offered Xizor to be captured out of professional etiquette.

This old flavor Vader is very refreshing, because he shows here how while politics isn´t his arena, he is no slouch at them whe he has to get involved there and I belive that´s something modern star wars comics have not tackled as well as this story did.

If there´s ever a Vader or Empire series, doubtful I know, I would like it to tackle his story from this perspective to truly connect the PT with the OT.

My Next Attempt At Long Fic (by which I mean more than 10000 words and it has chapters) Should Be...

The Sylki Con Artists AU

This one I have a wee bit written of already but I go back and forth on this one because it's Alternative Universe - Modern Setting and I feel like there's already a lot of those (which I also complain about a lot), and I have to justify it to myself as an experiment in whether I can do a Sylki Modern AU that doesn't just end up as "two people called Loki and Sylvie do normal stuff together". That's why they are con artists in this! Because 1) MISCHIEF (or crime, or whatever) and 2) if they have the same 'job' for similar reasons and I go on about them being similar a lot then that's maybe as close as reality can get to selfcest. (The selfcest is not just a feature of sylki, I feel it is THE feature and to admit to being Bad At Shipping (again) I'm just not that interested in it if they're different people who aren't even aliens. The same alien.) (You can tell me they are gods all you want but I've seen enough Doctor Who to know that must be A LIE so I reject it as such.)

The plot is that they meet in a bar one night and shag (obviously!) and then the reader discovers that Loki is trying to buy a painting from an old woman (planning on ripping off both her and his own buyer) and Sylvie is an artist who is selling a forged painting to some posh twat on the internet who she knows is trying to rip off her fake old lady persona on the deal but she's selling him a fake painting anyway so at least he deserves to be conned. They meet up a few times before finally realising that they are in fact conning each other under fake names on the internet, and then I have to try and fix it when they inevitably get mad at each other because of it. Also, Thor works in a shop because the brodinsons are Downwardly Mobile (dad spent all their inheritance, oh no!) Plotwise Loki is going to actually need Sylvie's painting for reasons I have not yet entirely worked out so one way or another they will have to eventually forgive each other for being con artists as they themselves are and for having attempted to con each other.

Ideally I will be able to make this one funny in some way, as I think the concept can get absurd enough to make a rom-com out of it.

2. The Jotun Heat Fic (also sylki)

I was into this one for about a day and now I have second thoughts because I am not sure I care enough about Frost Giant Biology to have to write an entire fic about it. It would continue my tradition (I did it once, that's enough for it to be a tradition) of turning a tiny ficlet into a much longer thing. This one: The Opposite of Heat, in which Loki and Sylvie go into whatever the Jotun equivalent of the fandom fave 'mating cycles/in heat' trope is, having never done so before because (see if you can guess...) they've never previously spent enough time around another Jotun for the hormones to kick in properly. They have no idea this can happen, and what starts out as Fun Porno-Fic Times soon gets a bit worrying and then I suppose they have to Investigate and that's the bit I fear might end up boring me.

This is set in an AU where S2!Loki did not instantly demand that Sylvie help him with his cop friends' problems and instead just went to live in Oklahoma with her, so the other/'real' plot is them getting used to living together and the weird-but-sexy medical issue bringing them into conflict because of course the first place Loki wants to go for help is the TVA (this not unreasonable of him, as they have a lot of info in their archives and he has no other friends anyway), which Sylvie is not keen on as she would rather just avoid them for the rest of forever. Gosh, I hope nobody goes to the TVA for help behind anyone else's back!

I need a way to make this one stay interesting once it gets to the Find Out What Is Happening part and also it needs to not just immediately end with a sensible solution like just going to Jotunheim and asking someone there for a talk about the frost-birds and the frost-bees.

Also I think they should fuck in that McDonalds. Just because.

3. Jotunheim Rejects The Guy Who Cannot Possibly Be Its Rightful King, Because I'm Annoying Like That AU (not thorki)

Speaking of going to Jotunheim, you know all those fics where Loki goes to be the Rightful King Of Frostland, as Odin apparently planned all along? That but it doesn't work, because I am not at all convinced he can have been Laufey's heir (who the fuck infanticides their only male heir?!) and even if he was well it'd just look awful, wouldn't it? Crusty Old Odin, worst friend to Jotunheim for several years running, sends back your kingdom's heir having raised him as one of his own family. (I hope at least one of you is thinking "US-Backed Puppet Ruler Who Will Do Whatever The CIA Tells Them To" because I did too! Ooh, geopolitical barely-subtext!)

The problem with this one for me is it requires a fairly large cast of Original Jotun Characters, and I still fear writing OCs because of the constant 'Mary-Sue' complaints in my fannish youth. Also I would Controversially (LOL not really) make some of them women, including Angrboda the ambitious would-be consort and Laufey's tragically spurned lover who on finding out that her long-dead son is not dead makes the most of it by insisting everyone call her 'My Lady, the King's Mother' (yes, I stole that from History but I do that sort of thing now, for the LOLs). So I have a bit of an idea what happens in this one, though I'd need to think of more political type plot stuff and also I just finished writing a multichapter fic that involved the Jotun succession so maybe I'd be overdoing it if I did this one now as well.

The other problem is Jotuns are too fucking tall. I mean really. This doesn't seem to bother anyone else but they are Too Fucking Tall to interact with the shorter characters, to the point that it just seems accidentally comedic to me. Just imagine the totally-not-a-puppet king of Jotunheim sitting on a massive throne, swinging his wee legs in the air. And I don't know how to work around that other than just saying "they are Less Fucking Tall in this fic" and I don't know if that would just annoy people. Also it does feel a bit incendiary to go against the general fandom insistence that Loki Is Totally The Rightful King Of Jotunheim. Though I suppose in this he is, it's just that he attempts to become so in the sort of circumstances that make everyone start saying things like "are we really that keen on our monarchy?" or at least "surely there's a cousin or an uncle we could give the crown to instead? yeah, even a woman would do. no, she doesn't have to be alive if there are only dead ones available."

(It was a mistake to let me read books about the Wars of the Roses, wasn't it?)

Oh and this isn't a thorki fic, but Thor is going to go to Jotunheim with his bro to help him settle in and also he will be going back to rescue him from it at the end. Bros before snows!!!!
