It’s Lollapalooza weekend in Chicago, so here’s my Lolla report on the concerts I’ve seen so far. I haven’t seen any. It turns out that we needed not only a new refrigerator-freezer, but also a new hot water heater. For whatever reasons, my family insists on hot water. Bourgeois elitists. What’s next on their list of demands? Indoor plumbing?
Anyway, my concert budget plummeted to zero quicker…
The Skies Sure Were Blue rocking with the Artimus Pyle Band!
The Artimus Pyle Band!

Review and all photos by Anita Maree
The Artimus Pyle Band (APB) rolled into St. Charles, IL playing the historic Arcada Theatre on August 20, 2023. From the moment the first note reverberated through the venue, it was evident that this was no ordinary concert. Pyle’s drumming prowess was awe-inspiring, infusing each beat…

Two years removed from their breakout 2017 record Between the Earth & Sky, Irish folk quartet Lankum are releasing the follow-up, The Livelong Day, next month. Expect them two play a couple songs from it at tonight’s show at the Beverly Arts Center (as part of the World Music Festival), including the one they’ve released, a pristine version of folk standard “The Wild Rover”.
Yandong Grand Singers of China open.
Prong, Reggies
We previewed Prong’s show last May at the Bottom Lounge:
“Groove metal legends Prong are still going strong. Albums like the excellent Carved Into Stone and last year’s Zero Days show that the band is still capable of telling a musical story from start to finish while making room for meaty riffs and complex arrangements, holding up alongside their 80′s and 90′s work.”
They release a new EP, Age of Defiance, in November.
New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front headline. Local hardcore band Uglybones also open.
Queensryche, Arcada Theatre
We previewed Queensryche’s show at Concord Music Hall earlier this year:
“In recent years, heavy metal band Queensrÿche have become less heavy and less metal. They say their new album The Verdict returns them to their roots. I met this claim with heavy skepticism, since similar bands have said similar things about every single new album they release, but this one’s not far off! Opener 'Blood of the Levant' combines chugging riffs with lyrics inspired by the Syrian Civil War. (If ridiculous concept albums like Operation: Mindcrime were 'political' in the same way a dystopian short story written by a high schooler would be, this song deals with actual real-world events.) The reflective 'Dark Reverie', meanwhile, exemplifies the progressive balladry the band does well. And slow-burning closer 'Portrait' is another needed change of pace from the thrash and bombast of the rest of the album. Point is, The Verdict is at once raucously hard and stylistically varied.”
Wolf Eyes, Empty Bottle
We previewed Wolf Eyes’ show last June at Empty Bottle:
“Ever the improvisers, Detroit’s Wolf Eyes come to town yet again to melt our faces, but mostly our minds. Their more recent output has bordered on the ambient, calmer than the harsh noise they usually make.”
Mukqs x Sharkula (the collaboration between Good Willsmith’s/Hausu Mountain co-founder Maxwell Allison’s electronic project and local offbeat rapper Sharkula) and pop rock band Glyders open.
Let me just start out by saying that the title of this blog makes no sense except that this post is about music and my quest to become one with music. You will only find out at the very end if I reached that lofty goal. I workshopped many alternate blog post titles, and they all sucked as much as this one, so what’s the point of even trying? It’s good enough (maybe too good?) for the likes of us.…
Tom Keifer's Timeless Tunes and Raw Rock Power = Electrifying Concert Experience!
Tom Keifer
Arcada Theatre, St. Charles, IL
July 15, 2023
Review and Photos by Anita Maree
Singer, songwriter, and mastermind Tom Keifer has proven once again that in your face rock-n-roll songs are alive and well. The Keifer band concert was a rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza. The band rolled into St Charles, IL on July 15, 2023, at the beautiful Arcada Theatre. Taking the stage with undeniable…

CSNY member/Twitter master David Crosby released his fourth solo album in five years, the surprisingly great Here If You Listen, last year. However, he’s currently on a tour entitled Sky Trails, named after his 2017 record, with members of CPR, the jazzy band consisting of him, his son James Raymond on keyboards, and guitarist Jeff Pevar. (Others playing include bassist Mai Leisz, drummer Steve DiStanislao, and keyboardist Michelle Willis.) However, expect him to perform his greatest solo and CSNY hits tonight.
Johnny Marr, Vic Theatre
We caught Johnny Marr briefly at last year’s Riot Fest and described his set as “the sound of classic Smiths songs coming from someone who isn’t an insufferable blowhard.” While that doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement, I do find Marr’s sets wholly enjoyable. His most recent album was last year’s Call the Comet, but he dropped a new track in February, the sparkling disco jam “Armatopia”.
Nils Lofgren Band, City Winery
Guitarist/songwriter and E Street Band/Crazy Horse/Grin member Nils Lofgren plays his second night at City Winery to celebrate the release of Blue With Lou, his new collection of songs, half of which were co-written with none other than Lou Reed. The songs were recorded with drummer Andy Newmark, bassist Kevin McCormick, and vocalist Cindy Mizelle, all who will be playing with Lofgren tonight, and one Reed-Lofgren track features saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Bonus for tonight: brother/Grin member Tom Lofgren joins the band on guitars, keyboards, and vocals.
