I’m so thankful that I was able to see Slouching towards Bethlehem so soon. Seeing Will Wood live has always been my dream, and I was so sad a few years ago when I couldn’t take off of work to see him when he was here. This show was absolutely life changing. I want to talk about this with as little spoil about it as I can.
First off when I was in the Merch line at the beginning of the show Will would often stop at the merch table, and thankfully everyone was really respectful and didn’t yell at him or swarm at him. I think it’s because we’re all adult with social anxiety. I like to think that Will is a cryptid of some sort and that if we acknowledged his presence he would become threatening like an SCP. I did enjoy that after he walked away that everyone looked at each other smiling, it was really cute.
Secondly, Will stood near my table (not next to me directly but a few steps away) durning Schayfer James first song which I thought was really cool, I’ve never seen another artist do that. I really enjoying seeing other artists support each other even if they “hate” each other.
Third, both Schayfer and Will were very interactive with the audience which is amazing. Will would even walk into the crowd while he was talking which was really cool.
Fourth, this was one of the most respectful shows I have ever been to. There was no heckling, nobody was singing at the top of their lungs. The only issue I had was the person behind me had their leg on my chair and kept shaking it, which just made me feel nauseous. It did stop thankfully.
Fifth, the storytelling was hilarious. There were moments we would be on the edge of our seats and then just burst out in laughter. It was fantastic the way he was able to keep us guessing.
Lastly, the music. I’ve been to many concerts where the artists doesn’t sound as good as the recording but Will really has a way with his voice. It’s an amazing talent, and I’m so glad he came back to preform for everyone like this. Hearing your favorite songs live are so euphoric. I know I’m going to be chasing this concert high for a while. I’m so thankful I was able to go.
Thank you Will Wood and Schayfer James. I hope I can see you both again soon.

Fastball – City Winery – Philadelphia, PA – April 19, 2024
30 Years of Fastball were condensed into one action-packed night at the Philly City Winery, previewing the upcoming album Sonic Ranch and tapping their substantial songbook for an evening of terrific power pop-rock.
The band, formed in the early 1990s in Austin, Texas and featuring the same central trio – singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Tony Scalzo, singer/songwriter/guitarist Miles Zuniga and drummer Joey Shuffield. They were joined onstage by guitarist and keyboardist Dave Scher, a fellow Austin native.
Fastball climbed into the show with a burning take on “Fire Escape.” The power chords came out to play with the rocking midtempo jam “Warm Fuzzy Feeling.” Then they blew through a fun but slightly creepy version of the psychedelic-rock-tinged “Charlie, The Methodone Man,” which the band cheerfully acknowledged from the stage had their dumbest lyrics. Not that there is anything wrong with dumb lyrics, they insisted, as Scalzo demonstrated by singing a snippet of Manfred Mann’s classic single “Do Wah Diddy.” (“There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin' 'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do.'”)
They followed up by the scathing – but surprisingly tuneful – personal rebuke “Hummingbird” from the upcoming album, in which Zuniga derided the delusional beliefs of a frenemy over a wonderfully catchy folk-rock base. Similarly cutting was another Sonic Ranch tune, the reverb-heavy “America” which took a look at the American political divide over a spy-theme cool driving melody.
The band also took on the sweet harmonies of “All I Was Looking For Was You,” and played a cool medley of the band’s “Love Comes in Waves” matched up with rock classics by Led Zeppelin (“D’yer Mak’er”) and the Steve Miller Band (“The Joker.”) Fastball toyed with styles with the folk-rocky “I Will Never Let You Down” and country vibed “The Girl You Pretended to Be.”
The power pop was strong on a live version of their current single – and preview of the upcoming album – “Rather Be Me Than You.” Then they took on the soulful Stax feel of “Growing, Growing Gone” and “On and On” – another pop-tastic preview of the upcoming record.
Leading into the encore, Fastball pulled out their two biggest hits. Still packing a punch was the gorgeous love-lost ballad “Out of My Head” (which was not only a big hit for Fastball, but also had a renewed life with five-ten years ago when the chorus was extensively used as the base of Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello’s smash “Bad Things.”)
Then the main act closed out on their biggest hit, the whimsical “The Way,” about a true story of an elderly couple which disappeared. Although the real-life story turned out later to be more tragic, Scalzo’s lyrics imagined a sweet outcome for the heroes. (Also, am I the only person in the world who thinks the song is musically a dead-ringer for a sped-up version of Tom Jones’ old murder ballad “Delilah” – particularly in the intro?)
After a brief break, the band got back up for an encore, slamming the night closed with “Daydream” and a rocking take on “Sooner or Later.”
Thirty years of great pop came and went in the blink of an eye.

Fatoumata Diawara Live Preview: 10/6, City Winery, Chicago

You'd think that an album cheekily titled London Ko (a play on the Malian capital of Bamako) might evenly place Fatoumata Diawara's singing and electric guitar playing alongside her notable cast of collaborators. Yet, the singer-songwriter's fifth album (3ème Bureau/Wagram Music), her finest yet, is as personal as it is a showcase for her band and featured contemporaries. Yes, six of the album's fourteen tracks were co-produced with Damon Albarn, and Diawara's mix of falsetto vibrato and smoky baritone nestles comfortably within the confines of everyone from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus to the soulful breaths of Angie Stone. But it's Diawara's poignant diatribes and life-affirming tributes that make the album stand out.
London Ko is primarily an album of uplift. "Somaw" and "Mogokan" are sweet tributes to family and brotherhood. The former looks back at Diawara's move from Bamako to France, featuring finger-snapped percussion built around acoustic guitar arpeggios and staccato piano. The latter, which features Ghanaian rapper M. Anifest, sports hip hop rhythms and drum fills and gospel-inflected keyboards. In fact, Diawara bolsters her influences throughout the record, emphatically journeying through Black music all over the world. From the house piano of "Massa Den" and dub of "Dambe" to the West African blues of "Dakan" and the funk of "Tolon", Diawara centers the declaration to "Let us unite and be one." Perhaps most thrilling is "Blues", featuring Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, his trills dancing atop forward-charging drums.
But as celebratory as London Ko often sounds and is, it does its fair share of mourning, too. On "Sete", like on Fatou's "Boloko", Diawara decries the practice of FGM, this time atop mournful keys and bluesy guitars. The forceful "Yada" sees her proclaim her worth, perhaps in contrast to a rich man, blistering guitar solos and fried keyboards carrying her singing. These songs are reminders that, to Diawara, making music--especially as a Malian woman playing guitar--is as much a political act as an artistically fulfilling one, never taking for granted the power of her own voice.
