three years ago I was miserable. I would cry every day. have panic attacks every day. I would eat alone, I would lie in bed for hours, I wouldn't go outside. I wouldn't let anyone close to me. I was terrified and convinced I was a horrible person.

today, I'm genuinely delighted to be alive. I go to sleep early so I can have lots of daytime the next day. I don't eat alone. I can't remember the last time I cried from something that wasn't a sad movie. I go outside every single day, for a bike ride, for a walk, for a swim. I know I'm not a horrible person. I know I deserve good things. I know I'm trying to be my best.

this took YEARS. this took THREE YEARS to work through. it took therapy, a change in my relationships, and moving countries. but it finally clicked. I'm finally in love with life. you need to grit your teeth. you need to lean on your friends. the way out is through, guys. carry on.

I see many posts about how it's okay to have a bad day or a bad week or a bad month, and I want to add that it is also okay to have a bad year or several bad years. It's okay if it takes you longer than a day or a week to work through your problems - and even if you've been struggling for years, that doesn't mean your entire life is doomed. Sometimes it takes a year, or two years, or five years or more to get better and that is okay. It's okay if your recovery takes time. It doesn't mean you're failing.
