The Arabic department at this university is confronting the history of this dictionary head on. Acknowledge that a Nazi was one of the primary contributors to it and why the Nazis were involved is a good thing.

On October 24, Curator Dot Porter will bring out LJS 387, an illuminated 14th or 15th century copy of al-Qāmūs al-muḥīṭ, a dictionary of the Arabic language originally compiled between 1368 and 1392.
Coffee With A Codex is an informal lunch or coffee time to meet virtually with Kislak curators and talk about one of the manuscripts from Penn's collections. Each week we'll feature a different manuscript and the expertise of one of our curators. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Puttering around on the Ligurian language sites that exist for Fanfic Reasons and enjoying the fact that so many people actually learnt about the existence of Italian dialects thanks to The Old Guard fandom. Brings me joy when someone mentions Nicky speaking Zeneise in fic.

I have always found it adorable when someone uses words in your native language, even if it's a simple "thank you" or "you're welcome", I feel it's a detail that lets you know that the person appreciates you enough or cares enough about you to learn your language
#it reminds me when i had a crush on this arab guy and i would carry a dictionary in my notes with words for when i saw him lol#he used to do the same with me; always saying thank you or you're welcome in spanish#it also reminds me when my friends tell me the most random sentences in spanish#because tell me in what colloquial / casual context are you going to use the sentence 'dónde está la leche' (where is the milk)#they always say it when we see each other lol

!! langblr introduction !!
salut !! i made this langblr to share my language learning progress and to be in contact with other people into languages<3 i'm especially interested in following people who post about their learning progress !!!
about me: - caroline (she/her), 21, finnish, uni student - other than languages i'm interested in almost everything art & culture related :) languages: - languages i'm concentrating on: french (high b1), german (b1), russian (high a2) - languages i'm learning on the side / have learned in the past: swedish (rusty b1), latin, italian (a1) (+ english). not planning on starting any new ones anytime soon..
language goals under the cut :)
some goals for this summer: - french: (1) finish b1 level textbooks and maybe go through grammaire progressive au français intermédiaire and/or avancé (2) get better at understanding natural speech (i can understand radio programmes etc just fine but movies, tv shows and youtube videos are a lot more difficult for me) - german: improve vocabulary, maybe go through a textbook (if i have the time) - russian: catch up on anki (i have over 5k reviews piled up….) and MAYBE finish my (final!) russian textbook - other: maybe try reading a book in swedish and listen to some easy italian podcast episodes, these aren't really that important long-time goals: - french: becoming as good as i am in english (or better..) - german: high b2 or c1 (currently my biggest problems are (1) vocabulary (2) can't speak…..) - russian: being able to read russian lit (+ having basic conservations without too much difficulty) - swedish: reaching a level that's ok/nice for a finnish person…??? as in being able to have a conversation if needed + being able to read contemporary texts (which i mostly am already) - italian: no big goals, i can already understand a lot based on french :) one day i'd like to be able to read italian books with ease and to speak semi-fluently but i'm in no hurry - latin: not forgetting anything i've already learned + finishing OLC 3 at some point (i only have 2–5 chapters to go)
#i'm not actually caroline my real name is just a bit too rare…#& the cerf levels mentioned are not at all accurate…….but I wanted to give some indication of my levels#i'll be tagging all of my french related posts with “français”; german with “deutsch” etc#french langblr#german langblr#russian langblr#langblr introduction#language learning#studyblr#and even though i'm not going to start learning a new language in the near future that doesn't mean that i don't have any plans yet...#as in.. when i'm at some point fluent in french and italian i want to learn spanish as well; it doesn't interest me as much as the other 2#but it's still a pretty language and there's a lot of great spanish-language literature to read :)#and then i'd like to learn estonian…#and i kinda want to learn hungarian and polish at some point..i most likely won't but they both look so nice#and finally….when i'm retired i'm going to keep my brain sharp by learning arabic or ancient greek#oh and i really want to “learn” to read the other main scandinavian languages as well….i just need a book and a dictionary for that though

over the past year what i've some to understand is that the word "terrorism" is only actually applied to "acts of terror" that are against the interests of the colonial state. and this gives the state the justification to kill more people than they were already doing before, as the acts of terror are, from what i've seen on my very quick wikipedia read-through*, almost always, if not always, a reaction to people dying under colonial conditions (which includes america bombing everybody).
and yes, the interests of the colonial state are everything that tr*mp stands for (capitalism, white supremacy), which is why an uprising in support of him is not actually opposed to the interests of the american government (or else he'd be rotting in prison right now rather than getting to rule again).
*don't roll your eyes, i'm not claiming to have it all figured out or that i'm an expert on this topic. what i'm trying to say is that it hasn't taken much for me to understand that terrorism is not a neutral word applied to all acts of terror, which a shocking amount of people seem to think without ever questioning it. i'm actually interested in reading more about it but this is my current superficial understanding of it based on the past year's media coverage and wikipedia
#this definition might not cover every instance of “terrorism” ever but it seems to cover a large chunk of it#it always seems to be “anything bad arabs do” or “anything bad leftists do” or “anything bad the colonized do”#school shooters killer cops insurance ceos who let everybody die genocidal governments and military never get these charges#even though they'd fit the dictionary definition of the word just as well if not more#that is what i've learned just by a superficial observation of media framing of terrorism#i haven't done a true deep dive so again i could be missing something and i don't claim to be 100% right#but this is my current understanding of it

When I was trying to figure out how to kern letters I saw an article that was like some fonts may have 1000s of kerning pairs and I was like whoa seems a bit excessive but I have 200 and I'm like a fifth of the way done.
#now i understand why Arabic fonts look like that when arabic calligraphy or just regular handwriting looks beautiful#I'm going to see this interface in my dreams so i can have the privilege (🙃) of manually copying pages from the dictionary#typography

How good is the Arabic grammar checker Sahehly?
Sahehly, an Arabic AI tool from Sakhr, helps improve writing by fixing grammar mistakes, suggesting synonyms, and providing tashkeel. Our test showed it to be quite promising.

Hi 🌟,
I hope you’re doing well. We’ve raised very little so far to support me and my family during these challenging times due to the conflict in Gaza. We’re still working to reach our goal and would greatly appreciate your help. 🙏
If you can’t donate, could you please share or reblog my pinned post? Your support in spreading the word would mean a lot to us. 💪

#יְהִי אוֹר; וַיְהִי-אוֹר#PalestinianFundraising#i would appreciate if someone with more arabic fluency than me could double check these translations#only some of this came from translators directly and the rest was google translate and my old arabic-english dictionary from college#i am.....not confident in it lol#would deeply value someone taking the time to help me ensure i am actually translating these prayers correctly#it is important to me that i offer these people something by way of response in their language#especially since they took the time to reach out to me in mine
