Triton Seawing light language lmao
I've had this theory/headcannon/idea for a while that, like the Seawings from wof, tritons are bioluminescent
While in bright lights, like the surface during the day, the patterns are practically invisible and don't glow at all, but during the night they seem to naturally illuminate
Of course, the trench which is the equivalent to the bottom of the ocean is much darker than simply the oversea at night, so the patterns only really glow in really really dark areas
And I know that Triton's can speak underwater as if they were above water but I imagine the further down you go the pressure (even though tritons are kinda built for that) messes with your vocal cords and the way the sound travels
So over time, tritons would learn to flash specific patterns in specific orders in order to mean certain things
Maybe if you flare out your fins and flash the patterns across them it could mean "here" or "come"
The patterns around the eyes would probably mean "see" or "watch/look"
I am a firm believer that the crown that Gil has is special to him and him only, but in the case that it isn't maybe illuminating the coral could mean "royalty" or "King/queen" or even "silence"
Though, at the same time, primordial and aquan are both languages kind of built for deep water so I feel like those would work as well
(speaking of which, recently I've been seeing videos of people chanting native or historical or generally really old songs or tunes in other languages, do you think the tritons would have anything like that in primordial? Or even aquan?? And what would the lyrics of the chanting entail? Probably something about the ancient leviathans or the gods and probably the cycle of life and death)

Another line of dialogue I recorded for my water elemental boss. A big inspiration for making stuff like this, honestly, was NieR. In the first playthrough of the game, you encounter enemies that speak a language you don’t understand. But on subsequent runs, their dialogue gets subtitles and you get context for what they’re saying, painting a much more tragic picture of what was going on throughout the game. I just love details like that, so even if my players think the dialogue is gobbledygook, I’m content with that. BTW, this is all of the dialogue I wrote using the Aquan cypher: 1. "Xjz jewi zua duni jisi? Miewi ni!" 2. "Ov ot pu ati. Vji huft jofi op gies." 3. "Cav vjip... Vji xusmf xomm sivasp vu xjev ov updi xet. Vjot ot... Huuf." 4. "Nusvemt, cixesi vji Qsuqjiv, gus ov tiit emm."

Gillion and Language!! :D (another jrwi hc ramble)
Personally, I really love the head-cannon of common being Gillion’s second language and therefore having a little struggle. (Primordial being his first language)
For example like, when Gillion was first pulled onto their old ship, he would’ve struggled a little with translating the words in his head. The crew would get into little miscommunications over it and he’d get frustrated with trying to adjust - among the additional discomfort of being out of water.
(I think that could also be the reason why he speaks so formally, unable to speak common as naturally as his co-captains. Though, I feel it’s also fitting to his character that the elders would have hammered formality into his speech.)
Gillion would have nobody to talk to with ease, except for Pretzel of course, the only person he’d assume would understand. It would that way for a while, until Jay would stumble upon his conversation and answer him in (somewhat) fluent Primordial.
I feel that’d be one of the things that’d bring them closer in their early days, teaching each other little words to help with understanding. Jay would enjoy the practise, not often being able to speak Primordial with anyone but the teachers who had taught her or long lost friends from Featherbrook. It’d help solve the barrier between them :)
With others it’s not so easy, which is why Gillion is so boisterous and expressive, trying to communicate another way. He and Chip find a way of understanding, learning slowly to read each-other’s expression or through physical signs. They show affection through side hugs or leaning into one another or wrapping an arm around the other’s shoulder. Actions sometimes convey more than words do.
When Gillion bonds with Caspian it would be a relief, rambling about home in the language he is familiar with. It’s nostalgic and comforting, especially after missing home and being forced to adjust to the change of culture so quickly. Even in the tank, everyone around him speaks in familiar sounds. It’s nice to hear words he can decipher without having to think too hard, the meanings coming to him with ease.
The same struggle comes to Edyn as well, speaking in broken sentences when they all meet in a bar in All-port. She spends most of her time working in the tank, so she still has a hard time adjusting and trying to respond to Chip and Jay as they talk to her. Gillion helps her out, his common improving over time spent on the Albatross. She still whispers to him in Primordial as the night goes on, and it brings him comfort that he isn’t alone.
Some of the Riptide crew would try and learn with time too. Gillion would teach Ollie little phrases to entertain him or tell him undersea stories. Chip would do his best to learn as much as he could; small languages lessons in-between sparring or training. He’d probably suck at it, laughed at by Jay for mixing up completely different words. The effort means a lot to Gillion at least.
Okay, this got out of hand. Goodnight! snooooree mimimmimi
Also, if you like this head-cannon you should read this fic that made me think about it :D (It’s an unfinished Royalty AU and it’s really awesome!)

Awhile ago I was thinking about Triton biology and eventually ended up landing on Aquan language being infrasonic sounds that cause vibrations in water and are caught by the fins. idk if that makes any sense lmao

When Gill Grunt, Zap, and Wham-Shell arrived in the Kingdom of the Merpeople to find information on the Water segment to the Mask of Power, they discovered that the kingdom was deserted, with only a few remaining, including Prince Aquan. Although the merfolk themselves have no clue what happened to the other mer citizens, Prince Aquan, Princess Finella and a few other merfolk soon fell under a strange trance and swam out of the kingdom without a word, with the Skylanders following after them to see where they were going.

last sesh: nyalori accidentally makes a man cry and confuses him by arguing that a city definitely exists when he says it doesn't
this sesh: nyalori confuses a NEW guy by asking for the most ancient maps of the ocean and also by not understanding a single thing he said about big events in elven societies that might make it hard for him to have maps

“So, about that shuttle, why do we need a special aqua shuttle? You would think that any shuttle that could survive a trip into the sea. Yes, I understand water pressure and all but, in a universe, where phasers and photon torpedoes are a real threat you would think these great space vehicles could travel anywhere in space including the oceans.”

Context: Our party was deep underwater. Our DM has it to where we can't communicate underwater very well unless you could speak Aquan or had connected airbubbles.
The ranger noticed that the party was being circled by an ancient black dragon. The ranger points it out to the paladin/sorcerer, who tries to tell the others in the party.
Paladin/Sorcerer: I cast Prestidigitation to spell "DRAGON" and I point in its direction.
Bard: I cast Minor Illusion, and it says, "DRAG ON DEEZ NUTS."
DM: ...
DM: [Bard], what is your AC again?

I was experimenting with my mic and audacity because I have a boss monster in my upcoming Pathfinder game that doesn’t speak Common. I’ve always wanted to do something like this, so I found an Aquan cypher here: https://dndtopics.com/languages/aquan/ I have four lines of dialogue he speaks that all sound like this. What do you think?

💎 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺! Mermaid Trousers
Wondrous item, uncommon ___ These trousers glimmer with reflective scales. The bottom of each leg widens into a fin-like, colorful lace. While you’re wearing the trousers and are completely submerged in water, you can use a bonus action to tap your feet together to transform your legs into a fish’s tail, as if you were a merfolk. While transformed, you can breathe underwater, you gain a swimming speed of 40 feet, and you can understand Aquan. You remain in this form until you use a bonus action to end the effect or until you’re no longer completely submerged in water. Any gear you’re wearing on your legs that wouldn’t fit on the transformed tail melds into the new form: you can continue to activate and benefit from the equipment while you’re transformed. ___ ✨ Patrons get huge perks! Access this and hundreds of other item cards, art files, and compendium entries when you support The Griffon's Saddlebag on Patreon for less than $10 a month!
