Because my brain won’t shut up and I have some self worth issues, let’s make some Aph america headcannons

First and explanation. Alfred grew up under mercantilism. His entire worth to his family defined by what he could produce for them while being looked down on. He knew that if she wasn’t good enough then he would be abandoned like Australia. I think that wether. It was intended or not Arthur may have manipulated his kids and cause them to in the future hacve self worth issues and try to do so much because if they don’t then what are they good for. Magbe this also has to do with a lack of praise or attention since Arthur wasn’t around often when they were kids. And especially after the revolutionary war, alfred toothy Arthur was so disappointed in him, after all he didn’t say otherwise. Maybe Arthur didn’t say he was proud of them enough.it probably want intentions, maybe that’s how he was raised, but it’s still affects alfred

Now after that explanation I do want to clarify this is all for the sake of story, I do have some self worth issues but nothing severe and definetly not caused by my family, they frequently remind me they love me, are proud of me and more, so just so everyone understands I am not reflecting, no need for concern, this is for story and angst sake.

now into the headcannons!

Alfred has weird reactions to praise. It’s unexpected since he’s so quick to praise himself as the hero and world power, but when complimented he seems surprised. He becalmed very happy but sometimes you can see a lack of belief in his eye, like he doesn’t think the praise is true, that he doesn’t deserve it. Eventually he takes it well after enough compliments, but it’s still enough for Alfred’s Friends to notice and give pause.

then one time, and older country or maybe Gilbert is teaching/ showing him something and when he does well they say they are proud of him. Alfred goes silent and appears shocked. He’s in disbelief. They country explains that they are really proud of him, confused as to why he reacted like that. Next thing they know he’s crying happy tears. He’s not smiling, clearly still a little distraught and kinda tangled in his emotions but he seems happy. The other country panics and asks what wrong . Alfred says he dissent know but he isn’t really used to hearing that. The other country makes a note to say it more often.

eventually a couple countries who are close to home or just concerned have noticed weird habits like this and gather to talk( without alfred or argue present) . Maybe a bunch of ten parental countries and some of alfred s freinds. They discuss and realize the self wotrth issues but are of course confused. Then one of the countries mentions that alfred said he wasn’t used to hearing that people are proud of him. That’s when things begin to fall into place. They agree that maybe some of them need to have a talk with Arthur about some of his parenting practices.just a talk.definitely nothing bad.

suddenly alfred and his siblings are called for a family meeting. Arthur apologizes for what he’s done to each of them and tells them all that he’s so proud and so happy to have them. It may take a bit, but maybe this is what this family needs to start to fix their past

Not sure how popular is that in Sicily as for the most past we do use the first part of the name, but it is done, like I am pretty sure no one would bat an eye if someone would call a person called Irene, Nene instead of Ire

I'm actually really glad to hear that, because I read two or three sources at some point that said it was a thing in Italy & especially in the south. So I felt really bad about the 'inauthenticity' of my characters, because by the time I learnt about it, the other nicknames were too ingrained to change them. Breathing a big sigh of relief that it seems to not be as hard and fast as I realized. OH YEAH I JUST REMEMBERED ONE OF THE SOURCES.

Okay, so, there is this terrible Yaoi Anime OVA about the Yakuza and the Italian Mafia out there. Not exactly sure if og Mafia Cosa Nostra or something else. They're in Rome, shit does not make sense. And aside from all the other terrible, insensitive and illogical things, I got so mad about the one guy's name. He was an Italian (who looked like aph America though) by the name of Alberto. Do you know what they shortened it to? Al. AL!!! FUCKING!!! AL!!!!! And I was so enraged about this, because "Al" pronounced Italian is a fucking preposition & that aside, does not sound like anything an Italian would ever use. It ends in a goddamn consonant. Christ alive. So I looked for sources and found a forum, where people talk about how in America, the first name of an Italian name is often used to make a nickname (Salvatore becomes Sal), but in Italy it tends to be latter part (Salvatore becomes Toto). Which isn't the most waterproof source, but it was good enough for me back then.

(Also big fuck you to whoever wrote on the Hetawiki and another source something that made Lovino look like a viable Italian name. Now I am stuck with this nonsense and have to work my extradiegetic failure into the story as the intradiegetical quirk that Emmanuela Vargas wanted to have a Special name for a Special boy. She was old money from a family in that big radius of Tirol & Veneto, details I haven't figured out yet. But sheeee spoiled her kids and was an entitled trophy wife. I love her. In the Ancient Olympics AU, I had an idea that Michele ended up having to coach the Vargas and he is such a nervous wreck about them losing bc he knows Emanuela will find NO fault with her boys and rip his head off instead. THAT kind of mother).

((Also kind of a fuck you to past me myself from stealing a name from FMA, not checking and ending up with a dude named Dolcetto. But not really a fuck you, bc it is a quite hilarious name. Bro's named like a grape. His nickname is Dolco, yes with the hard c, bc Dolcio or Dolce he'd loathe. Loathe just as much as Etto, as the Vargas and Franci half jokingly suggested, because he's 1.65m tall & skinny & a real insecure anklebiter about it.))

Story starts with Arthur returning to school after like a year

In that year Alfred and his Brother/Cousin, Matthew transfer to the school and has got settled in

Al blends in with it popular crowd a lot better than Matthew who’s always forgotten

The popular groups is like Francis, Gilbert and Antonio plus like Lovino and some others

So basically once Arthur comes back to school the gossip girl blog starts again and the first post is slating Arthur

Basically just exposes why he was gone for so long and/or making fun of why he was gone

From there the blog is used to vent ‘gossip girls’ gripes with the popular crowd and spends a lot of time targeting them

Al and Matt get closer to the group through this and Al gets closer to Arthur specifically

(Some filler bonding stuff that I cba thinking of rn)

GG starts going after Al as he becomes more and more apart of the group revealing embarrassing secrets from his past

Arthur and Francis get spotted hanging out at some point and the blog just blows up with hate directing towards them both but more towards Arthur

(Maybe some more drama)

Al starts to piece it together and confronts Matthew

Boys been crushing on Francis and is very bitter about being ignored and the blog that was originally just to vent became popular and he got kinda addicted

Targeted Arthur in the beginning because him and Francis used to have a pretty well known friends with benefits relationship before Arthur left

(And I can never think of how to wrap up fics hence why I don’t usually write them lol and if I remembered exactly how gossip girl ended I might just rip that off lol)

I added a brief possible prucan ending in the tags that I don’t want to retype but still want to add as a possibility lol

Okay this might seem a bit harsh on Canada but out of the Aph characters whose most likely to act like Gossip Girl before the reveal? (I’m not spoiling who it is in case you’ve been living under a rock). Idk none of us seen GG as a bad person until it was revealed the were behind the posts.

Ending in Madness

A Hetalia fanfiction I started many, many, many years ago!!! Like this is sooo old!! 

I want to upload it now after all this time because it’s never going to be done! And I’m like re-reading all of it again after all this time and it’s so bad...

Was inspired to create this after reading The Looking Glass Wars, so I wanted to use cardverse hetalia and a bit of my own craziness sprinkled to it.

Once upon a time in Wonderland the kingdom of Clubs ruled all the land and no one dared went against them, or their feared King; King Winter of Clubs was very feared in wonderland and no one ever questioned his rule. During his rule King Winter wanted to insure that no one will ever defy him and wanted to possess the most powerful army in all of wonderland, so he created the Mad Hatters. But creating Mad Hatters, one must place another through horrid torture until the mind is broken, and from then they are molded to become Mad Hatters, by force. Once the other kingdoms received word of the King of Clubs’ experiments for a stronger army and how he wanted to obtain it; they decided to wage war against the Kingdom of Clubs.

When war had begun against the King of Clubs all 3 kingdoms have had mass casualties due to the King's new soldiers, King Winter has given them the option to surrender and be spared or continue and die, deciding to surrender, the 3 kingdoms held a meeting to make the decision final. All 3 kings, the King of Hearts, the King of Diamonds, and the King of Spades have come to the agreement that they had no choice but surrender. But in came the Queen of Spades making her way through the doors with a walk and posture that held such authority, “YOU CAN NOT JUST SURRENDER I WILL NOT ALLOW IT!” she yelled with a commanding tone.

“We have no choice, we are losing men left and right if we keep this up there won't be anyone left!” said the King of Hearts

“If we surrender he will spare the people and our families as well” said the King of Diamonds

“Honey please we cannot keep this war going any longer” said the King of Spades

“If that is the case why not allow me to lead your armies” The queen of spades proposed, “A woman leading an army, well that sounds laughable” laughed both the King of Hearts and the King of Diamonds. “Honey don’t do this, I can’t risk losing you” pleaded the King of Spades, ignoring her husband's words the queen said, “well if it’s so laughable allow me to prove you wrong, in one day I shall have the King of Clubs army pushed back to the mountains, allow me this request and if I succeed allow me to take over all your military”.

“What? You can’t be serious that is impossible, we have been fighting for a year now and we have not been able to make any progress. What makes you think that you can do any better than us?” questioned the King of Hearts “As I said allow me one day, just one to prove that I a ‘woman’ can and shall win this war, unless you fear that a woman can best you.” challenged the queen.

“Nonsense! One day is all you wish correct?” said the King of Hearts

“Yes, that is all I wish to prove myself to all”

All three kings proclaimed that it shall be granted

It was very busy within the Queendom of Spades for today was a very special day, it was prince Alfred’s 12th birthday a very special day indeed for our young prince of Wonderland. It was as busy within the Queendom as it was within the palace. Servants within were in quite a hurry getting all the necessary preparations ready, and to prepare everything for the guests from the other three kingdoms.

On this glorious day all the attention was pointed towards the prince. He was within his room playing with his friend Tony. “Tony, today is going to be great! Everybody is coming from all over wonderland to celebrate my birthday.” he said to Tony. “Yes Alfred it sure is a special day for you indeed. Well I do have to take my leave so that you may dress yourself for this glorious day.” said Tony “Tony stop talking like that you know you can talk to me like a person, I hate it when you do that” Alfred pouted “Isn’t that the point” smirked Tony “I’ll see you when you get out then,” “ok see you!” After Tony had left he let out a sigh and said,”I hope that I’m allowed outside the castle for once, now that I’m 12, Oh what I would give just to be outside the castle.”

Knock. Knock

There was a knocking at the door, “ya?”, said Alfred as he turned to face the direction of his bedroom door. That’s when entered his mother the fair Queen of Spades, Queen Amelia,”Hey sweetie ready for your big day?” she said while closing the door. “Yes mom, but mom I want to ask you something” he began, “well what would you like to ask me sweetie”, responded his mother.

“Why is my 12th birthday so special, we never had huge parties on my 10th or 9th birthday like this. Why this one?” questioned Alfred,” Oh Alfred, have you been sleeping during your studies?”

“Ah no…..maybe” Alfred responded sheepishly

“Alfred, oh well it can’t be helped” she sighed and began walking over to the bed to sit, and patted the spot next to her signaling Alfred to do the same.

Alfred complied, " well you see ever since the beginning of time the number twelve has always been seen as a complete rotation."

"A complete rotation?" Questioned Alfred

“A complete rotation around the clock, signaling the end of an era to make room for something new” explained the Queen. “The other kingdoms have done the same within their own domain as well, it’s quite an important occasion for all royals, but mostly for the one ruling wonderland. Which will soon be you once my own time is done.”

“Mom how do you know when time is up, what does that even mean?” asked Alfred curiously cocking his head to the side.“Well in due time you will know. But everyone’s time ends in one form or another, whether it be a happy ending or a tragic one. But we all keep going to see where and how it ends, that is where wonder takes over to give us the strength to move forward and reach our goals.”

"Well enough chit chat we have a birthday to celebrate, come on we must get you ready."

"Okay ma" Alfred answered as he got up and followed his mother.

Within the Spadian military training camps were the new recruits that would soon be joining the card soldiers. Clanging of swords were heard outside followed by grunts and the barking of orders.

“Come on put your back into it!” one of the commanders barked.

“Is that all you got?!” yelled one of the trainees towards his opponent.

As the loud sounds rang through the air from swords, one trainee stood out from the rest, a teenage boy no older than 14 years of age, was only studying the other trainees around him, his face showing deep concentration.

“Studying your opponents Kevin?”, came a voice from behind, that was when the young trainee turned his head to see who had interrupted his train of thought. It was a young teen similar to him no older than he was with gray silvered short hair and very abnormally red eyes that seem as though had no life to them, no pupils were present. He dressed very nicely, wearing black pants with a white button down shirt underneath a royal blue waistcoat that had the symbol of the Spadian Royal Guardian.

“Ah, it’s only you Tony” replied Kevin. “And yes I am studying, I do want to gain the upper hand once we do get into real battle you know”

“Indeed I do know, I had to go through the same to gain my position as the Spade Royal Guardian and plus some” said Tony as he went to sit next to Kevin.

"So why did you want to be a Royal Guardian?"

"Well I didn't really, I was just chosen and I just said sure"

"Oh, I see well you are one of the best and besides that you also have to teach AL too. How's that goin for ya? He must be quite a handful."  laughed Kevin

“Well he tries, but he’s more of an ‘inventive’ individual than a fighter.”

“inventive?”, questioned Kevin

“Well he loves to think, imagine, dream, or wonder as I would put it. But that is also why he’s so interesting as well.”, answered Tony

“Ya, I wonder where he gets that from”, questioned Kevin

“Well besides that, are you ready for his birthday today?” asked Tony

“what do you mean by that?” asked Kevin

“I mean are you ready to dance with him” said Tony with a smile

“WHAT!!! YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS!! WHY ME!!!”

“Well don’t get mad ok, I know you like him and it has become more obvious lately”

“What, really?”

“Ya, I think it’s pretty cute and I just want to let you know that I approve” said Tony

Questions on The Hatters:

What is a Hatter?

              A Hatter is an elite soldier, a soldier that endures much more difficult training than the card soldiers. Once you're a Hatter it's for life.

How does someone become a Hatter?

Well in Wonderland, you must strive become a Hatter and endure the training that comes with becoming a Hatter. They must not be selfish, must show respect, and be gentle to the people they must protect. But besides these required traits, a Hatter must endure physical and mental training to build up their endurance. Excel in their studies, and must help others throughout wonderland. Hatters are the elite soldiers of wonderland they bring justice and smiles upon the people they help and interact with.

What is a Mad Hatter?

A Mad Hatter is like a Hatter but instead of the normal training that becoming a Hatter is required, they endure torture and take training beyond what it was meant to be taken. Due to this process, people go mad and lose their capability to ever have their sanity back ever again. Mad Hatters are extremely dangerous and must be avoided at all cost, even though they’ve gone mad it doesn’t mean they’ve lost their knowledge and just attack. No they are intelligent but lose their morals, which makes them twices much more dangerous to be near them.

Why do the Hatters only have their last names with them?

             When a Hatter or a Mad Hatter completes their training they give up their identity and accept their rank as Hatter or Mad Hatter. When this happens the name of a Hatter is forgotten from the memories of others and only the Hatter knows their own name, and it's their choice whether they would tell you their name or not. But Hatters do not reveal their names unless they would be vulnerable, that's why they only reveal their name to one that is trusted, so trusted they trust them with their very life.

Why does a Hatter become vulnerable when one speaks their name?

               Once a Hatter's true name is spoken they freeze in mid action and are then overwhelmed with the desire of protecting the one who has spoken their name. And will do anything to protect them even give their lives.

When a Hatter's name is spoken it is immediately forgotten by the ones who overhear, and only the ones who the Hatter revealed their name to are the ones to remember.

Summery:

All is well in Wonderland, until the once ex-king of Clubs made a return to bring madness and destruction over Wonderland. Will anyone escape his vengeful wrath, and save Wonderland from Madness?

kind of disappointing to see you supporting something like H*talia, I liked your art a lot but you support one of the most racist anime out there....

Okay. Lets talk about this. I’m actually going to copy and paste something I already wrote on my main blog about Hetalia then I’ll add a few notes... Yes. Hetalia the show is problematic. I garentee most sane Hetalia fans will agree, the fandom is probably going to go down in fandom culture history as one of the first disaster fandoms way before the fandoms that surrounded voltron or Steven Universe. Again, most Hetalia fans will also probably agree with that. There’s certain bits from the comic and show that are absolutely not okay- however for those of you making a ton of assumptions about ppl who were in that fandom or are excited about the possibility of it coming back-> let me just explain a few things.

1. Hetalia made massive history nerds out of a lot us, it’s not that didn’t have some problematic results and of course it’s very euro-centric. But I’d argue because of this show It made a lot of people interested in the world and history way more than they ever would have and educated themselves further as a result

ADDED NOTE: The fandom, while small, I’d say has grown up a LOT. The people in it are a lot more informed and aware - The abbreviation was changed pretty damn quick as people started coming back with the new season announced from “APH” (Axis Powers Hetalia - We can all know what’s wrong with that) to “HWS” (Hetalia World Stars).

2. If you were a fan of Hetalia…. that honestly actually meant you were more a fan of the fandom than the actual show. Hetalia has more AUs than probably any fandom I’ve EVER seen: these people made a ton of content Off of characters that appeared in episodes less than 5 minutes long. It got to the point where a lot of people’s interpretations of the characters were SO far removed from the original show they may as well just be entirely new characters. I’m not going to sit here and argue like the fandom couldn’t get toxic, I was there, I remember. This is absolutely a piece of media you SHOULD ABSOLUTELY still be critical of and many many many many many people since the day Hetalia showed it’s face and the ended up getting a creepy pasta story made out of it already have. We’ve been here. Fans have used these characters as an easy way to inform and educate, even more so now than there used to be. So any new fans coming in as well may actually learn a lot about history and other cultures. Which can be really important when done right. It CAN aND HAS been done responsibly. So at the very least if you see a few current or ex Hetalians on your radar just don’t automatically assume shit. It’s way more complicated, we’ve all been through this shit before. Us oldies have seen and understood many a fandom through aaaaaallll the highs and lows.  We were there. We know both the bad and the good that can come from this, as is the case with literally any fandom ever. All of them can be great, creative, and create friendships and community (I have my long term best friend in large part due to Hetalia) … and they can also be latched on to by people who aren’t gonna have others best interests at heart, and are gonna try and use something for bigotry or being just gross. That’s why you stay I n f o r m e d above all else. If you weren’t there for this whole rodeo before, just… at least get the idea that this ain’t a cut and dry situation FURTHER ADDITION: “One of The most racist anime” is a pretty bold claim. Shows like Attack on Titan I would argue have way more damaging mixed messaging around the holocast and nazism. However I wouldn’t go so far to call fans of it racist. Because either A. People aren’t focusing on that aspect of the anime and just like the cool action or B. They know but they’re consuming and reacting to it critically and making informed choices about where they put their money and time. Naruto and Once Peice - two of THE MOST POPULAR ANIME for a LONG time out there, have characters that are EXTREMELY racist charactures of black people but no one talked about that for a long time. I would also argue that yes, the Hetalia dub has some very racist and problematic things with it, we should all get on funimation’s ASS about that, however, the original sub is mostly harmless outside of just plain not acknowledging the horrors of the holocost - which I think since the show is supposed to stay a comedy is why the author steered away from having things set in the 1940s because at a certain point and most modern Hetalia strips don’t touch it - you either make a mockery of a serious topic (cough cough the musical in a lot of ways) , OR you don’t touch WWII and just keep the setting modern and you can continue making fun of Europeans especially all you want.

Point being, If I draw Hetalia fanart... that is not me putting a stamp of approval on everything in the show. If you see a Hetalia fan drawing a character in a Nazi uniform, or putting the pasty-ass character for America in a Native American headdress of course! Call them the fuck out! We are too! Report and block them! So... yeah. And look, I get it, from an outside perspective where the only thing you’ve heard about Hetalia is the absolutely WORST of it, of course you would feel that way, that’s how most Fandoms get a bad reputation. It IS good to talk about this. And if you or anyone still wants to disagree with me, look I’ll still hear you out... but I think we have to get out of this headspace in any fandom of EITHER YOU STAN EVERYTHING ABOUT SOMETHING AND SUPPORT EVERYTHING ABOUT IT OR YOU MUST HATE AND DESPISE IT. i have my thoughts, and i have my expectations, so lets go into the latter first

so i think that himaruya will make things simple. he’ll go with making phili and america friends, where phili still sort of idolizes america and america somehow keeps confusing phili for mexico or some other latino or SEA nation. funny, light, and vaguely based on stereotypes, as is the hetalia way!

which is fine by me, honestly. historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity is not what hetalia is known/popular/loveable for anyway lmao so i don’t have any high hopes for how this is gonna come out

my idea for phili is that he’s explicitly gay and that he 100% had his gay awakening when he met america. i mean, a strong, handsome blond with a charming grin and and bright personality suddenly comes into your life and says he’ll walk you through developing yourself into an independent nation of your own? if this was a coming-of-age story, america would totally be phili’s manic pixie dream boy that he blindly trusts and admires even though he doesn’t know a thing about him.

but they’re nations, and it’s complicated, and phili can’t exactly ignore how america’s “benevolent assimilation” plan wasn’t so benevolent at all. he loses the war against america, and while he’s grateful that america seems to be genuinely preparing him for independence when he becomes a US colony, he also feels himself losing part of his identity as america’s cultural imperialism ingrains itself more and more into him. he’s restless when his requests for independence are constantly rebuffed, and is emotionally and physically devastated when japan marks him as a target during ww2 because his country was made to hold so many US army bases. 

i love historihet’s idea that alfred would come into sexual maturity in ww2 and that he’d totally be a massive flirt, but i also feel like its around this time that phili stops romanticizing america so much. especially when america finally gives phili independence after the war but its still full of a lot of conditions that force him to still be dependent on america for stability. phili stops seeing alfred as an ideal and more of as a person: still charming, still handsome, still earnest in his dreams of being a hero, but also flawed and definitely not perfect. this should make alfred more “attainable” for him, but ironically enough, this just makes phili lose interest in him lmao. he realizes that alfred is actually annoying af, but he is grateful for all the good things that alfred has given him regardless, so phili is just trying to repay the debt by siding with him a lot when conflicts come up

meanwhile alfred has always seen phili as a friend, so he’s never had the kind of internal conflicts about their relationship the way that phili did. now phili just shamelessly flirts with alfred because its fun and amusing and he’s confident enough to do it now, and alfred just revels in the massive ego boost it gives him lol. its a fun friendship and they like to keep it at that

An unexpected ask 🤔 Well rochu is way to engrained in my brain, so like. part of the dynamic (in my head) is the fact that I really like Russia and China as a pairing  This response is going to be based heavily on my own headcanons (that others may have different views from which is 100% fair), and this is a word barf of a post, BUT Just in general for me, I like Russia and China entering this weird sort of relationship with America after the cold war where they’re all friends and the two of them like fucking with him. I headcanon all of them struggling with their mental health, but America is the most outward about it, so they’re also protective of him. Because in my AU’s, every single government treats their Nation like shit in some way in modern times, but their three countries are some of the worst (in different ways). They then bond over that I like the dynamic of America third-wheeling Russia and China too, sometimes being oblivious, sometimes annoyed as all hell.  If we’re examining each relationship with each other (in my head): Russia-China: Romantic. Feelings started arising pre-WW1 after the Boxer Rebellion in China when Ivan and Yao actually got to be alone together for the first time in centuries. (I go into this in my fic WDWW so I won’t regurgitate everything here But)  The two treat each other as equals and as humans, and during the beginning half of the Cold War when Russia and China were allies, the two admit their feelings together. When the Cold War is over, they’re allowed to see each other again and develop a comfortable relationship they try to keep secret, but all the Nations know about anyway Russia-America: While Russia and America the countries interacted with each other prior to WW2, I don’t see Ivan and Alfred as being alone with each other until WW2, and even then Arthur is always there so the two don’t talk alone much. Any interaction they don’t really know what to make of the other, though. And then the Cold War happens. And now we’re getting into my other fic AWH’s story -- but I like the idea of them developing a friendship during it despite everything because the other can really relate to their situation. They develop a mutual understand and even come to find they share many of the same hobbies. Their friendship is a teasing sort of one and they have mutual respect for one another.

China-America: China and America had no interactions with each other until Asia was forcefully opened up, and then never spoke alone each other until WW2, and even then those conversations were more stilted than America’s with Russia. I see the two developing an understanding and friendship after the US started recognizing mainland China as the legitimate China (instead of Taiwan) during the Cold War. And now I’m an ameripan hoe and I like aph South Korea so: I see China as having a deep, complicated relationship with Japan and SK. Because America and SK are very good friends, and America and Japan are in love with each other, Yao has to deal with hearing Alfred brought up a lot. The two have mutual respect for one another, even if Yao often looks at America in bewilderment sometimes if he does something stupid So yeah! Long post, but I really like these three together ^^

APH College AU: China

Oh hey look I’m doing the Asians now? Perhaps! AU intro here, highly suggested you read for context of why China is out of college.

Also, I know chefs aren’t supposed to be a waiter/see customers and cook at the same time, but too bad. He likes interacting with people personally and is good at knowing when to go back into the kitchens to make sure the food doesn’t burn.

- Owner and head chef of a small Chinese restaurant called Upside Down Luck (*any suggestions for other names are cool!*). He’s thinking about expanding pretty soon, since business is good and very consistent and a second restaurant would probably be as successful as the first. - 50% of business is college students, so he knows most of them. Most have come to his place at least once, and some, such as America, are regulars. - He's really good at memorizing faces and names, and can usually recognize people from the college. They get treated with either “Welcome back! How’s school? I heard there was a small fire in the labs!” or “You, again? *sigh* Same as last time?” - Also relating to that, he never lets students get more than two bottles of alcohol, especially late at night, and has never fell for a fake ID (partly thanks to his siblings telling him who’s a sophomore, freshman, etc). A true mom. - Knows all the school gossip also because his siblings, especially Taiwan and Japan, but South Korea also lets things slip because he forgets China doesn’t know; at dinner or something he’ll be like “Remember how ___?” And China whips around, very surprised and says “What??” with a raised eyebrow and a look that says s p i l l   t h e   t e a   s i s - He always complains about making his food too “Americanized” (?) but honestly it’s more Authentic Chinese style than most people - DESPISES Panda Express and their orange chicken. CHN: “Why is this sweet????” HK: “Chill, that’s just American Chinese food. Anyways, it’s okay tasty.” “No.” “What do you mean, ‘no’?”

- A whiz at budgeting and bargaining; always stays on top of his finances and sometimes manages his siblings’ finances as well when he’s really pissed at them for being lazy/not responsible with their money. A lot of the restaurant’s success is due to his cunning and money managing. - When he’s cooking or frustrated or hot, his ponytail goes up into a sort of bun. He’s not too happy with how it looks on him, but it’s just more convenient that way, either because regulations/sanitary purposes or to get his neck cooler. - He gives his siblings 20-30% off on restaurant stuff most of the time, but it varies a little with mood. Most other students have been jealous at some point or another, but the other side of the deal is that they can’t call Yao “mother” or “grandma” or “grandpa” in any form. They still do it though, and then he’s like “No privileges for you!1!2!1!!” - Also, the restaurant layout is super fengshui, because Yao is superstitious as heck, but also because it’s actually useful for interior design. Like it’s all perfectly aligned, windows face north-south (to get fresh air and sunlight), the door doesn’t have clutter around it, etc. It honestly looks a bit minimalist but also traditional at the same time. During the Lunar New Year he puts up menshen (门神) on the door and couplets on the sides of it, and he always has a small Metteyya (弥勒佛) statue/idol/thingy in the back of the restaurant for money and luck. - Laughs internally at people failing at using chopsticks. (He provides knives and forks and spoons of course, but there are always the handful who keep trying chopsticks). I think he’s the type to just... casually watch you struggle in vain and won’t do anything to help. Of course, if you’re a friend, then he’ll definitely try to teach you, but he doesn’t mind having a laugh at most of his customers. I think South Korea, Hong Kong, and perhaps Vietnam (Japan, Taiwan and Macau would be too kind to laugh and chopsticks aren’t widely used in other Asian countries) would stand and watch as well, taking out their phones and recording any particularly hilarious attempts. - He doesn’t live right above the restaurant, but has an apartment 3 blocks over. It’s not small, but not too big either, so when his siblings come over it gets kinda crowded. South Korea and Hong Kong are always telling him to move out and get a larger place, but China just kinda refuses out of sentimentality. “I like this place too much to leave it!” - Wakes up at 7 AM every morning and walks around the neighborhood and sometimes goes to the college to visit India. He likes routine, and considers it a really refreshing part of his morning. - I haven’t decided a lot of the other ancient’s lives yet, but China and the others would definitely get together for chats once in a while. All of them just happened to stick around close by after college and they’d talk about work and college gossip. College gossip is provided by China and India, but they all know a bit since their siblings are still there. - He majored in business and took a whole lot of outside culinary arts classes in college, and also happened to take a bunch of other random classes just for the heck of it. So now he’s educated on things like human behavior and what people would do in a zombie apocalypse + why they react that way, garbage and sustainability, and medieval studies + folklore through Game of Thrones. He considered taking a tree climbing course but didn’t, just because he didn’t want to waste time relearning how to climb trees with ropes. - Corollary to that, he probably has the weirdest fun facts because of all this miscellaneous info he’s collected. “Did you know there’s immortal cancer cells?” “I don’t want to know, Yao.” (Above fact is true but the story of the cells is really sad (and twisted and makes me kinda angry). They’re called HeLa, after Henrietta Lacks.) - His dorm room was probably on the neater side. However, it wasn’t too meticulously organized, and sorta like a thrown together hodgepodge of themes/aesthetics. Not that pretty to look at but it did its job well for him; he never really lost things in his room. - Loved math assignments (even though he grumbled) and bs-ed English, didn’t do too well in it. I think he’d honestly be ok with a B+, and his grades would’ve ranged from 87s to As depending on subject, with possibly one C+ where he just didn’t really apply himself. But he still applies the Asian Parent Standard to his siblings (but isn’t too strict about it most times. Just when he feels they’re really consistently not doing their best when they could be aceing a class). - He loved history though, and took a lot of courses about it that he didn’t need to graduate. This is also how he met India. - I feel like Yao would have a lot of lifehacks, both for managing college work, job lifehacks and things he uses in the restaurant daily, and tricks for outdoor work ex. farm work. Like if you put him outdoors in a rural area and told him to grow crops and raise chickens, he’d totally be okay with it, and would probably be able to do it well. This is in contrast to his siblings, who are more of city (?) kids. - Of course, he’s proficient with tech stuff and office work, but isn’t as good at it as Japan or HK. - Has a 3/4 heat tolerance and a 5/10 cold tolerance. He warms up by cooking (hot stove) or drinking warm water or tea. - Proud, a bit overly critical of people and nagging. He often gets tiny bursts of anger/intense annoyance at small things, and it makes him scary sometimes. (I hc it’s like this; someone does something slightly off/wrong and he kinda has a mini explosion, but it doesn’t affect his overall mood and he’ll still be pretty cheery to you after the incident is corrected.) - Again, his anger isn’t really full blown anger, but more a bunch of small annoyed explosions. It’s rare he gets mad, but if so, it’s usually a long tirade and lecture with lots of hand motions and shouting. It’s sorta scary since he doesn’t often get like that, so it’s serious when he does. - Relationships with some of his siblings are strained a little. They’re like a sorta mismatched family with lots of squabbles and petty disagreements, especially about who can order the others around. - Honestly a people person, he could ramble on and on for days about his life. Some people find him tiring, but he’s a good mixer with strangers. Casual friends with a lot of people, especially those who appreciate sarcasm and can snark right back at him.

Also, the “random college courses” I mentioned are all real classes, obviously not from the same university, but they exist (pretty cool!!) Like I kind of want to write a twisted canon universe where aph America is pretty scary, cares about looks and money and likes to make sure everyone knows he’s the best. And then an aph England whose life motto is pretty much that he’s here for a good time not a long one. Like Arthur’s always our drinking and doing dangerous shit and is high key manipulative af.

Like I’d say it’s 2p but then I don’t think of Allen or Oliver like that tbh, plus I don’t really ship 2pusuk though I’m so down for 2pUS1pUk 👌👌

Idk I just want that fic because I think Arthur would tease Alfred into loosening up and while Alfred thinks Arthur’s a total idiot they both have a soft spot for each other. It’s kinda hard to explain without just writing the fic lol.

Hypothetically, if someone were to try and revive IAMP again, but including American and Mexican states this time, how would you feel about it?

Hi there friend,

I have to put my personal feelings aside and ignore the root of the question for a moment here. I think, and I mean this with extreme sincerity and kindness, that hypothetical someone would be in way over their head to try this. I’m speaking from a place both of heartfelt attachment to the project and from a place of stressful administrative experience in its first revival. I first joined IAMP in 2009 and have more or less watched its entire rise and decline and participated in every facet of its renaissance, so I am extremely aware of where things are likely to go off the rails.

Here are some of the challenges you would hypothetically have to be aware of that I’ve outlined below. Read on, if you like. Aside from that, my take home message is this: if it isn’t fun or worthwhile and it becomes a chore, don’t do it. Do things because you enjoy doing them, because they strengthen relationships not break them. As always, ask if you have more questions because I’m happy to be a fandom auntie.

(And to answer your original question, my feeling is “exhausted”.)

1. Character Depth

For what we were trying to do (that is, writing, voice acting and art with editing on top), having 14 fully fleshed out characters was an enormous challenge. I cannot imagine having to balance nearly 100 characters. Back in the original IAMP, we had such a challenge getting the focus beyond Quebec and Ontario that even they weren’t given the character depth they deserved. Filling the spaces for VAs was an enormous challenge, and we technically had double the amount of roles because we wanted understudy positions in case one of our main VAs was ill or busy. There is a point right at the beginning when you have to ask what kinds of stories you want to tell and why you are doing this; without thoughtful attention, characters will become flat and fall back on overused tropes extremely quickly if they aren’t flat out ignored because no one can put in the work to understand and develop them.

2. Material

IAMP was running during a time when the fandom was at its peak. There was no lack of content about APH Canada that we could adapt and artists were very easy to get in touch with to ask about using their work. This is simply no longer the case. For Project Canada, this meant creating all material from scratch ourselves. We had no rigorous process for writers to workshop things and collaborate and try things out, and rather than being a creatively supportive environment it felt like a factory floor where no one had the same idea of what we were supposed to produce. It was all about matching the pace of the old IAMP with no actual creative substance. Instead of being fun, it was a chore. People would also fall back on their own ocs rather than developing the ones we had in front of us because they enjoyed it more, and I can’t blame them. 

3. People

This is the crux of the matter. People are the driving force of any creative endeavor. No matter how good your intentions or how well you get along, you will lose people along the way. Sometimes people drop off the face of the planet with zero explanation, that’s literally how I got my VA position as Alberta the first time. Sometimes people fall out with others- in the old IAMP, we lost one of our original admins because they wanted to bring in state OCs and make the project a little more America-focused, which was against the mission statement that our director was going for and this disagreement ended up costing friendships. Sometimes, people are well meaning but don’t have a direction or don’t feel like they can contribute even if they desperately want to, and eventually real life takes priority. Even when I had a ton of free time in my last degree where i was only taking one class and working on my thesis was my full time job, managing the project and taking on all the jobs no one else wanted to do including the work of my two other admins was a full time job and it started to impact my health. 

It’s an extremely stressful thing to keep track of other people let alone have energy left over to kickstart creative material. And it sucks when you have to turn down well meaning people who want to help because what they’re doing doesn’t match your endgame, its hard work trying to steer a creative project AND just moderate a forum, it’s hard to coordinate people with ideas to match and encouraging people without hurting their self esteem. It’s hard work doing research and interpretation and trying to keep characters consistent without making a dogmatic or trope-reliant one-size-fits-all version of history. And it’s especially hard to keep politics out of something all about politics. 

And this is just internally, I won’t even touch on dealing with people outside your project who don’t get what you’re doing or have problems with your interpretations. IAMP is ten years old this year, not all of it has aged well, and we were not fast enough to make good and thoughtful decisions on how to ‘update’ it for ProCan. I’ve seen so many people make ignorant comments about us when I occasionally go out looking for a nostalgia trip that it’s exhausting to deal with. I’ve run into several people I’ve had to avoid or unfollow because they seem to think our “popularity” is stifling their own ideas and who build their own OCs up by tearing us down. It’s really exhausting and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, which is why I prefer to do things in my own corner and just develop fun or interesting ideas on my own in my spare time when I can do my own research and come up with my own interpretations and then take responsibility for them. 

But this is why I encourage you to play and experiment on your own with people you enjoy talking to. I know I sound like a major downer with all these problems, but this fandom has honestly brought together some of my best and most enduring friendships. I’ve gotten to see so much of this country and meet so many people because we had this in common, and I even was able to persuade people to visit me in the subarctic backwater city I call home and show them what I loved about it. Don’t let this discourage you from creating, from talking to people, from trying on different hats. After all, I’m still here, I’m happy to be the fandom auntie, and I’m happy to chat about interpretation whether it’s about IAMP or otherwise. I’m just not willing to throw my soul into something that I know is going to be that much work again, especially now in my final year of my masters. It’s not worth the struggle to pour all your ability into something unsustainable. Plant the seeds, and water them where they take root, and let it be organic and messy and fun.

Operation: Sweet & Sour by Thing2BK is a slow burn Romanada (Romano X Canada) story with a cliche enough idea, Elizaveta getting the two to go out together from a high school meddler’s desire to see what’d happen. But, to discount the heart and humor within each of its 36 chapters would be doing it injustice. [Finished]

Prince’s Hand And Half of the Kingdom by marinoa shows us FrUK in a fairytale setting in which Arthur is forced to marry a very special frog, both very unwilling to go through with the process. Whatever shall a desperate prince do to evade the slimy frog’s existence? [Finished]

Child’s Play & Wildlife Encounter by GlitterTrails are only two of MANY delightfully charming stories produced by this author. Both stories tell of SuFin-related funtimes. Child’s Play being the tale of the two as children first meeting in a human AU and Wildlife Encounter showcases Tino as a TV animal expert (akin to Steve Irwin but goofier and scared) becoming spooked by the newest of creatures, the future love of his life.

How To Get Recognized by Mama May-Eye is a rare story about the micronations Sealand and Ladonia asserting their nation status to one flabbergasted Sweden, strengthening the two boys’ bond all the while. My description isn’t doing the humor within any justice, so read for that yourself. [Finished]

Do It Right by Arlia’Devi is a GerIta and Spamano tale of Germany’s attempt to give Italy the proper proposal and Roma not taking this sitting down. I read it from the kink meme first and lemme tell ya, it had me laughing like a crazy person. [Finished]

Childs Play by pupeez4eva is a side-splitting journey from the accidental transformation of America and Germany into kids because of Prussia’s mistake. Even without a concrete ending provided, there’s enough chapters of the story to get lost in. [Unfinished]
