When Malaysia Barat & Timur were younger (Melaka & Borneo), their personality were different. Melaka used to be the cheerfull and happy go luck brother while Borneo was the protective and serious sister. After Japan's colonisation, the twins personality changed as if they switch personality with each other (and also the fact at one point they look very identical).
Which is also the reason, to this day, why Singapore gives confused looks to his brother and sister.

From left: Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah
I'd like to think that aph Malaysia is made of three entities: West Malaysia (or Malaya as they call her in the old days) while iconique duo Sabah and Sarawak make up Borneo Malaysia or East Malaysia.
According to all known laws of aviation (and the circumstances during pre colonial times), these three probably wouldn't even thought of being a country together. Malaya wasn't even Malaya yet; she was vibing as the Sultanate of Malacca. Meanwhile the very modern form of what we know now as Sabah and Sarawak might have not yet existed. Not to mention they're separated by sea and at a glance it seems they have nothing in common culture wise.
However a few hundred years later after getting colonized, land selling to some yt who then made himself king, world war II, communism and the kicking out/graciously left/divorce of a former Federation member...Borneo Malaysia and West Malaysia are still a thing, 60+ years strong(?)
