Guest Service Excellence Crosses Industries, Continents
The city sounds familiar but the accent isn’t what you expect. When the Straz’s new senior director of guest services mentions he’s from Boston, you expect the steamrolled vowels endemic to the U.S. city’s natives. Anthony Winter-Brown’s accent is decidedly English, though. He’s from the other Boston, the original, actually, In Lincolnshire. In the U.S., of course, Boston means Bahstahn and…

The Story of Tonight
Pairing: John Laurens x Reader
Word Count: 1,345
Genre: Historical au
Warnings: Not really a warning but this not historical accurate and is not about the actual historical person but the Laurens by Anthony Ramos
Summary: You've been friends with the Schuyler sisters for years and they invite you to the winter's ball. At the ball you meet eyes with John Laurens and you know you're helpless.
You always wore dresses in shades of lavender, making you a sight for all eyes. You were also born into a family of wealth as the only child. Your job was to marry rich and have children. However, you never found yourself interested in any of the men who crossed your path. Angelica told you that tonight would be different, as there was a ball for Washington and his troops.
In your normal life you weren't too acquainted with soldiers, so you gave in to her request and joined the Schuyler sisters at the ball. One big problem was you had no idea what to wear. Sure you had many gowns, but none seemed to pick your interest. That was until your fingers came across a lavender gown with white ruffles at the ends of the corset, sleeves that ended at the elbow and were adorned with the same pearly white ruffles. There were also pearls along the neckline and you knew this was the dress.
After your handmaidens helped you get dress and do your hair into a beautiful low bun with a pearl clip, you could hear the Schuyler carriage pull up to your home. Squealing, you made your way outside, curtsied at the men opening the door for you. As they did, you could see big smiles on Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy's faces. “Ladies I am truly thankful for the invitation.” Angelica smiled and shook her head while Eliza pulled you into the carriage. “Come on Y/N we don't want to be late!”
It did not take long till you all arrived at the ball and were quickly greeted by eligible, some not, men. You and Angelica were both tired of them men just trying to suck up to you two and not be true and honest. While chatting with the sisters you heard some noise and noticed Washington and his troop were now here. You paid respect and turned to curtsy when your eyes fell on a certain soldier.
He had freckles all over his face and luscious brown curly hair. It felt like your heart stopped beating and everyone was frozen. That was until Eliza tapped on your shoulder bringing you out of your trance. "Hm?"
"Y/N you were staring is everything alright?" You quickly blinked and turned to face her with a smile. "Yes, I'm fine just... Do you know who that man is." As you pointed Eliza shrugged but placed her hands on the small of your back. "No, but you should go talk to him he's cute." Before you could you answer she was already walking you towards the man.
You noticed the small group of men around him smile and back away so he could take a step forward. You felt like you couldn't speak and you needed a timer telling you when to breath in and out. All it took was one smile and a kiss on your hand from the man and you were done for. "John Laurens at your service ma'am." So that was his name, come to think of it you did hear about the Laurens and their wealth from your father but never did you think their son would be this breathtaking. "Are you going to introduce yourself m'lady?"
If you weren't embarrassed you were now as you look at his smirk ridden face. "Ah yes my apologies Y/N L/N it's a pleasure to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine, say would you care to take this over to a less crowded area?" You nodded and laced your arm through his as you walked to a more secluded place. You felt so helpless being near John. You had just met the man yes, but you could already feel the sparks flying. "I must say I have heard of the L/N family but they never mentioned the daughter was as beautiful as I am seeing now."
You knew he had to be a flirt and you also knew your game was not the best. "Well the feeling is mutual. I don't mean to burden you, but I'm not great at communication at least not right now." John had given you look of confusion and you sighed. "Please do not laugh. When I'm near you I feel like the world has stopped and it's just us in it, like my heart is beating so fast I can't feel it."
He took your hands into his and smiled the brightest smile you had ever seen. "Y/N when I look at you I feel this sense of longing I never had before, and I do not want to let it go. I have to be honest with you, I am a soldier fighting in the war where we do not know what will happen. If I'm to court you, and if your father accepts, will you take the possibility of not knowing?"
You understand every bit of his words and held his hands tighter. "I do accept, all I ever wished for was a man who had his life planned how he wanted and was never afraid to do the unimaginable. Only request is you write to me when you can?"
"I'm not the biggest writer but for you I promise to send you letters." A beautiful smile made it way to your face and you couldn't feel any happier than now.
During the week's at war John sent you four letters, and you re read them every day. In reading them it was almost as if you could hear his voice. You learned that Eliza hit it off with Alexander Hamilton at the ball and she was also receiving letters from him. The pair was also getting married the next day.
As the day came you were excited for two things. One, your dear friend Eliza had met the love of her life, and the other was you had believed you did too. John Laurens was there at the wedding, so were the others but you only cared for him. You knew you weren't to walk with him as the maid or honor, Angelica, and the best man, John, had to walk together. However you gladly waited for him with the same smile on your face from the first night you met.
The wedding was beautiful and so was the reception, especially because you were able to get some time with John alone. "I missed you dearly, have the soldiers been good to you?" He chuckled and moved a stray hair from your face. "Yes, even they weren't I wouldn't stop fighting for what I believe in and neither should you."
You knew what John was talking about, it wasn't like a war but you knew you would have to fight for it. See you wanted to open a library for kids of the unfortunate, where they could learn to read and write. John mentioned in a letter after you told him about how your caring nature was something he loved about you. Love, it wasn't a word you two expressed before but once he wrote it, the word and feeling became a frequent.
"I'm still in the works of convincing my father, but all can be on the side for now because I want to relish my time with you before you leave again."
"I know my dear Y/N, sadly we can't stay long after the wedding, but my dear I promise to write more than I have and I will help win this war to come back to you if you'll have me." You nodded and held his hands. "I will always wanted you John Laurens always. I'll get this library started and when you come back we can get married, have children and show them how beautiful the world can be."
John caressed your cheek and looked into your eyes deeply. "I would love nothing more than a family with you Y/N." As he was leaning in you did as well giving him a kiss goodbye hoping he'd come home to you.

Having now watched the first two episodes of Shardlake, some observations:-
please could modern tv dramas learn that realistic lighting is less important than being able to see things. I've encountered worse than this but Still.
that Romanian castle on a mountain is just not convincing me as a monastery on Romney Marsh in Kent oh dear Gods. Especially with only 100 monks. They'd rattle around in there.
I know it's winter but... working farmland in the grounds anyone, rather than just a few random sheep and chickens? Especially given they brew their own beer?
people in Tudor England demonstrated to be so ableist they have not noticed that the prettiest lawyer in all of London is among them just because he's disabled. I mean SRSLY.
really really enjoying it though.
magnificent acting throughout but especially Arthur Hughes as Shardlake is just... oh my life. My expectations were high (I've seen him in Richard III and he's just the best ever), and he more than lives up to them.
ooh, Gollum's daughter! (Delivering another smashing performance.)
I remember quite liking Jack Barak in the book! In this I admit I want to throw things at him. Anthony Boyle's doing an excellent job, it's just.. yeah. He's still interesting though, just less likeable. :-)
this is a very crapsack world interpretation of Henry VIII's England, but not necessarily unrealistically so under these circumstances. Everyone is either traumatised, appalling, or both. (I admit that the crapsackness is why I eventually gave up on the book series, though I'm finding it a lot more tolerable on telly.)
no really, the acting is stunning. Everyone's a pleasure to watch, deeply compelling.
my eternal love for shows that have visibly disabled characters played by visibly disabled actors (even if Arthur Hughes is not disabled in all the ways Matthew is!). <3 You can tell that Hughes has had some input. And he's not the only disabled actor in it! :-)
Talking of the prettiest lawyer in all of London:-
[image description: an unedited screenshot from the first episode of Shardlake, showing Arthur Hughes (a white man in his early 30s) as Matthew Shardlake. He has short light brown hair, pale skin, a short beard, blue eyes, a dark blue doublet. You can see his head and shoulders, and can just make out that the character has scoliosis. He's in a darkish room though with a window letting in light in the background, and there is candlelight on his face. He is looking to his right, wistful or melancholy.]

I thought Fauci was hospitalized with the WEST NILE virsus? "Fauci wants to bring back MASKS after contracting COVID (despite being vaccinated SIX times)"
12 Aug 2024
By Alexa Lardieri U.S. Deputy Health Editor Dailymail.Com
The number of infections is increasing as part of another summer surge - even though hospitalizations and deaths from the virus remain at historic lows.
On Monday, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease said: 'The message is that if you are in a risk category you have got to take this seriously.'
The 83-year-old told people with comorbidities and seniors 'you should be wearing a mask' in crowded places.
He also revealed he had contracted Covid about two weeks ago. It was his third Covid infection and he has been vaccinated and boosted a total of six times.
The above shows weekly Covid deaths (blue bars) and percent positivity of Covid tests (orange line)
The above shows the percent positivity of Covid tests in the past week by region in the US
According to the CDC, the weekly Covid test positivity for the week ending August 3 was nearly 18 percent, compared to 16 percent the prior week and 10 percent one month before that.
Test positivity is the share of Covid swabs taken that come back positive.
World Health Organization officials warn that if the virus continues to spread, it could lead to new mutations and severe infections that evade vaccine protection and therapeutics.
Deaths have been generally on the rise since May, but began declining the week ending July 20. They currently hover at around 500 per week, compared to more than 25,000 in the fall of 2020.
The elderly, people with compromised immune systems and those with comorbidities are more at risk of developing severe Covid, being hospitalized and have a higher risk of death from the virus.
New documents 'credibly show' Covid DID leak from Wuhan lab, say House Republicans
Dr Fauci told MedPage Today Editor-in-Chief Dr Jeremy Faust: 'You don't have to immobilize what you do and cut yourself off from society, but regardless of what the current recommendations are, when you're in a crowded closed space and you're an 85-year-old person with chronic lung disease or a 55-year-old person who is morbidly obese with diabetes and hypertension, then you should be wearing a mask.
'And you should be careful to avoid crowded places where you don't know the status of other people and you should get vaccinated and boosted on a regular basis.'
Dr Fauci's face mask guidelines have long been criticized as people claimed they did not work to prevent the spread of Covid.
The educational and social effects of face masks on children have been well documented, with one NIH study calling the impact of mask use on students' literacy and learning 'very negative.'
Another NIH study also found that social distancing caused 'depression, generalized anxiety, acute stress and intrusive thoughts.'
And in testimony to Republicans in June, Dr Fauci admitted he didn't remember reading anything to support that masking kids would prevent COVID.
When asked if masking kids was an effective way of preventing Covid transmission, he said: 'I still think that's up in the air.'
Despite the mixed guidance, experts are still concerned about the rapid spread.
Dr Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University's School of Public Health and former White House Covid response coordinator, told NBC: 'If you just talk about infections, this is probably going to end up becoming the largest summer wave we’ve had. It’s still not as big as the winter waves, but it is starting to get close.'
Dr Anthony Fauci recommended that the elderly and people with comorbidities wear face masks to protect against Covid
Dr Jha said she expects this surge to peak in the next few weeks and subside in September, just as updated vaccines to target the KP.2 strain of Covid become available.
Additionally, in a briefing last week, World Health Organization officials said 84 countries are experiencing a rise in the percentage of positive Covid tests over the last several weeks.
WHO officials said: 'Covid-19 infections are surging globally... and are unlikely to decline anytime soon. The UN health agency is also warning that more severe variants of the coronavirus may soon be on the horizon.'
And wastewater surveillance suggests the spread of the virus is two to 20 times higher than what is currently being reported.
WHO officials added that new waves of infection could spur mutations and more dangerous strains of the virus 'that could potentially evade detection systems and be unresponsive to medical intervention.
The health agency is urging countries to ramp up their vaccination efforts and promote yearly Covid vaccines for high-risk individuals.
Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious disease epidemiologist and lead of the COVID-19 response at WHO, said: 'As individuals it is important to take measures to reduce risk of infection and severe disease, including ensuring that you have had a COVID-19 vaccination dose in the last 12 months, especially, if you are in an at-risk group.
'I am concerned with such low coverage and with such large circulation, if we were to have a variant that would be more severe, then the susceptibility of the at-risk populations to develop severe disease is huge.'"

I’m not sure if something like this ever happened to you: but when you are really really tried or just have something else in your mind… sometimes you forget things and go looking for them even though you have them literally by yourself 😂😅 (looking for you glasses while wearing them hapen to me so often 🥲)
Could something happend to Steve and Bucky to or even their little one? 😃
Darling!! Great question :D (PS thank you for your patience my angel)
So...sort of. It happens to Steve and Bucky, but not to you. And it drives them nuts. Because you never forget ANYTHING.
You have an almost supernatural gift for finding their stuff, mostly because (and you're not even consciously aware of this) you seem to have a radar as to where they are at all times if they're in proximity to you and you're awake.
Steve has a habit of setting down whatever is in his hands if something big grabs his attention. And, being Captain America, that could mean anything from hearing you squeal and he's not sure if it's a scared squeal, to his mission communicator going off, to a news story suddenly popping up about someone being in trouble, to a missing dog poster. If he senses a mission that needs him, he almost goes into autopilot to help. On good days, Bucky jokes that it's the Cap version of his Winter Soldier programming which often earns him a scathing glare. When the problem is solved, Steve'll try to go back to what he was doing before, but can't remember where he set stuff down.
You can basically retrace his steps from memory and find whatever it is. To you it's the best treasure hunt ever and you love it. While he's always grateful and rewards you for helping, and genuinely loves that it makes you so happy, it drives him bonkers that he can't remember where he put the thing down in the first place.
Bucky has a little more of an excuse- there are holes in his brain from Hydra that will never fully be gone. He's done a lot of work to deal with these issues, including finding coping mechanisms to help him remember little details. That's what drives him nuts. Sometimes when the big stuff slips, he can begrudgingly accept it. It's the little stuff, the innocuous and unimportant stuff, that drives him mad. And he legitimately tries not to get down on himself when something slips through the cracks...but he's never been self-forgiving.
You don't realize exactly what's going on with him- why he gets so gloomy when he can't remember where he put his book down when he just had it. You just know that when you play with him, he gets happy and isn't gloomy any more. So if he's all frowny trying to find something, you go into full-on Private Baby mode. It becomes a critical mission to find it, and you'll run to your room and put your doggie tags on and a bicycle helmet and Papa's big brown leather coat (which is about 4000 sizes too big for you) and come out barking orders like you're a drill sergeant, determined to find the missing object and not resting till you do. It always breaks Bucky out of his funk, and he'll usually join in the mission (which often includes getting bombarded by pillow bombs, having to belly crawl down the hallway, and spying on Papa to make sure he "hasn't gone rogue").
They like to privately joke (when they're not annoyed at themselves for losing stuff) that you're better than St. Anthony. After you find something, they lovingly tease each other that St. Katie Cat has won the day again.

okay hear me out; the concept of five times… and the one time.. with lockwood and reader, where they are in a secret relationship, maybe reader could be kipps sister to give a reasons why they can’t tell anyone. and then just five times (or less idk) they were nearly caught and the one time they were?? i think that would be amazing, also i’m a sucker for forbidden romance trope so…
I love this. I hope I did it justice for you.
Words: 1400 ~ Content: angst, kissing, forbidden relationships
clandestine meetings and longing stares
This is a public place. We’re not doing anything wrong.
It’s true. The Archives is a public place. Where people go to study.
Except that’s not what you and Lockwood are doing.
Not that you’re defiling the books here or anything. You’re just stealing a moment together.
Towards the back of the first floor, in the stacks of the Ancient History section, where hardly anyone goes, Lockwood has you pressed up against rows and rows of leatherbound books.
He’s so close that you can see tiny flecks of gold in his dark brown eyes, make out a few stray hairs on his jaw that he missed shaving this morning.
You settle your hand over his heart, feel the rhythm of it beating.
You’d like to do this in public. Hold his hand in front of everyone; claim him as yours.
There’s just one problem: Quill Kipps is your big brother, and if he found out, there’d be hell to pay.
Lockwood’s nowhere near good enough for you, he always mutters.
And isn’t Anthony’s life hard enough already? An orphan by the age of 6, and responsible for Lucy and George (not that they need taking care of) at 17, he has worries galore without adding sneaking about with you to the list.
But he loves you. You feel it in his hand at the small of your back, hear it in the timbre of his buttery smooth voice when he says your name.
“Lockwood-” you begin, but he presses a gentle finger to your lips.
“Shh. Listen.”
And sure enough, you hear it. The swish of rapiers against clothes. Other agents are here.
You spring apart, you tucking yourself around a marble pillar just in time to see your brother approach.
You’re safe.
This time.
—- ---
The second time, it’s George who saves your bacon. He’s known for weeks; he was the first one to figure it out, because of course he was.
The three of you are in a little cafe a stone’s throw from Covent Garden, drinking tea and sharing cake. Lockwood feeds you bites from his own fork and you reciprocate, while George playfully rolls his eyes about how sickeningly domestic it is.
You’re laughing and brushing a bright pink angel cake crumb from Lockwood’s mouth when George suddenly knocks his cup of tea right into your lap, and when your gaze cuts to him he mouths: Go.
A second later, you hear your brother’s voice at the cafe counter and you disappear into the bathroom.
—- ---
The third time is a very close call.
Lockwood’s shimmied up the tree outside your window. Your heart jumps into your throat every time he does this, especially because it’s usually after dark.
When he taps on your window, you let him in right away. He’s windswept and his skin is cold from the winter air. He smells of crisp fallen leaves and earl grey tea, and you kiss the confident smile off his face.
“Lockwood,” you say when he’s safely seated on your bed. “We have to stop this.”
He tugs you close, pulling you between his legs so your back is to his front. “Don’t ask that of me. Please.”
You turn and kiss him. “No. I mean, sneaking around. Quill will have to just deal. I mean, we face terrifying Visitors on the daily, but him finding out you and I are together is worse? I don’t buy it.”
“He hates me,” Lockwood murmurs, tangling his fingers with yours. He sighs. “And maybe he’s right. You can do better.”
You twist in his arms. “You shut up right now. You’re the best person I know.” He still looks so sombre, so you add, to make him laugh, “Except George. Of course.”
“Except George,” he agrees, but his seriousness is for show now, and the little glimmer of happiness on him makes your heart soar.
He leans down for another kiss, and his mouth is delectable, and you turn fully in his embrace to line your bodies up.
You’ll never get enough of him, you think as you slide your hands into his hair, pulling him closer still. Your tongues tangle, and when he breaks the kiss you lean back so he can drop kisses down your neck.
The sound of your name from outside the door makes you go rigid.
It’s your brother.
He knocks. “Are you in there?”
“Shit!” You breathe.
You practically push Lockwood off the bed. “Hide. Hide!”
He scrambles under the bed and you stuff your quilt in behind him just as Kipps opens the door to find you reclining on bed with your over-ear headphones on.
“Would you knock?” You exclaim.
He frowns. “Sorry. I - why is your window open? Aren’t you freezing?”
—---
The fourth time, everyone’s in the dark - literally.
You’re all working together, Lucy, Lockwood and George, and Kipps and his crew, including you. The basement of the creepy old church is silent around you. You only have the one torch, but Kipps wants to survey the space without light at first, to get the lay of the land.
By some divine providence, you’ve ended up crouching next to Lockwood, and you startle when he takes your hand, only to relax when you feel his familiar rapier-callused palm.
You don’t dare to speak, but you rest your shoulder against his.
His fingers start to move on the flat of your palm, and you’re confused for a second until you realise that he’s tracing letters on to your skin, with full stops in between to demarcate the words.
I.
Love.
You.
It makes your heart swell as you imagine him saying the words, imagine his gaze holding yours, strong and sincere.
And then Bobby loses his nerve and switches his torch on, and all hell breaks loose, and the moment is lost.
—--
The fifth time, you don’t even try to hide it.
It’s the aftermath of a huge battle. Several Type Twos. Not enough agents.
When the fog from the salt and smoke bombs clear, Lockwood’s lying on the ground a few feet away, next to your brother. You crawl over, see your brother stirring, but Lockwood isn’t.
Desperate, your heart clenching, you kneel by his prone form, cupping his face with both hands.
“Lockwood. Anthony,” you beseech softly.
Kipps sits up, but you ignore him. You settle your fingers on Lockwood’s pulse point.
It’s sluggish, but it’s there.
Relief makes you weak as Lucy, George and Bobby crowd around.
“He’s just playing-” Kipps begins.
“Shut up,” you snap.
He recoils but says nothing else.
“Lockwood, wake up!” You plead, patting his face.
Around you, Lucy and George look stricken and pale.
You wait for what seems like an eternity, but then Lockwood lets out a little cough.
“Help me sit him up,” you tell your brother, and to his credit, he responds right away, and between you you prop Lockwood up against Kipps’ chest.
“You’d better not die,” Kipps mutters. “My sister will never be happy again.”
Your gaze flits to your brother’s face.
He rolls his eyes. “I’ve seen the way you two look at each other. Neither you or Lockwood are as clever as you think you are.”
Lockwood’s eyes flutter open at that moment. “Good to hear that normal service has resumed, Kippy,” he groans.
You lean in and kiss his dear face. “How do you feel?”
“Like I’ve been thrown around like a ragdoll.” But he smiles, and some of that Lockwood bravado lights up his eyes. “But getting to kiss you in front of everyone just might be all I need to recover.”
You laugh and kiss him again. Kipps makes a face, but doesn’t protest.
“You don’t mind?” You ask, still cuddling in close to Lockwood.
“Hard to mind when he saved my arse literally ten minutes ago.”
“Aww,” Lockwood coughs, still weak. “Kippy and I are having a moment.”
Kipps shoves Lockwood off him. “As long as you never, ever refer to us having a moment again, we’re good.”
The whole hang of you walk home together, you and Lucy supporting Lockwood between you, and, you think:
We’ll be all right.

Hey folks, I had an idea. So I'm writing a fic called Once More, With Feeling, and I am about ready to put another chapter out, but at the same time I have also finished the character sheet of every character in my fic who goes to school at the same time as Harry (whew.)
So my idea was that I would release said character sheet and people could do asks pairing a character with a subject they liked (for example, Keiko Tanaka with older lesbian awakening) and I write them a chapter if I could, because 1. motivation and 2. it would be fun!
One note: please don't use any original characters without asking. I know there's still a chance that it will happen and maybe it's not fair to ask, and if so lmk, but if at all possible, if you are reading this, inherent creative copyright is the basis of all fanfiction and if we can't agree on that, so much of what we love wouldn't exist. If you ask I'm 100% amenable to the characters being used, but please ask.
Okay, without further ado, here is the list as of right now, with Harry as a first year. When I get to the next year I'll reblog with the new kids and without the seventh years. The * refers to an original character, and the (a) refers to a character that has already been introduced in the story, which doesn't mean they can't get a chapter written but means they may already have a bit of a personality.

Chapter Five: A Long Winter Together
“I think I’ve been in cities for too long. Were there always this many stars?” Crowley wondered, looking up. The fierce wind that swept obscuring clouds away had stopped, leaving the night still and clear. Vast tidal ripples of the aurora shifting through the sky glowed green with hints of pink and yellow and violet, lovely and inviting, and it made him want to fly up to dance among the dancing lights, to feel the frisson of charged particles play over his skin and along the ends of his hair, the tips of his feathers.
“Were the stars always this bright? Were the northern lights always this beautiful?” Aziraphale murmured from the heated cocoon of Crowley’s embrace, hot water lapping lascivious around his bare shoulders.
“Not as bright as you,” the demon whispered and leaning back, felt hot water slide up around his neck and ears even as Aziraphale squeezed him tighter, their bare limbs entwined in the steaming water.
“Not as beautiful as you,” the angel whispered, his voice trembling, feeling the touch of cool lips soft upon his own.
The bell of the bookshop jingled sweetly as Crowley came in, tossing off his rain-flecked scarf and coat, everything hanging up properly on the coat rack in a way that must have been miraculous given the haphazard way Crowley threw off the outer layers. The demon took off his dark glasses and ran the fingers of one hand through his infernally dry hair, the other hand carrying a plain crinkling paper bag.
“Angel, I’m back! With chocolate croissants!”
“Crowley.” Aziraphale’s voice held the hint of a threat in it.
“Yes?” Crowley asked as he wandered into the back room, with as much innocent naivete as he could muster, which was either a lot or not very much, depending on how it was measured and who was measuring. He set the bag of croissants upon the round table where they took their tea breaks. The bag tipped over as if by accident, opening to reveal a glimpse of two beautiful flaky croissants within, glazed golden brown. “Shall we eat while they’re warm and the chocolate is still melty?”
Aziraphale eyes lingered upon the pastries briefly, before he turned back to the computer monitor.
“‘Never before in the history of the gävlebocken?’ ‘The first time in memory?’ ‘The jackdaws are stripping the goat down to its frame?’”
“Surely I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Crowley said, trying and failing miserably at concealing a smile behind a tiny black cup of hot espresso that had been waiting for him on the break table.
“This!” Setting down his hot cocoa, Aziraphale tapped the heavy glass monitor, pointing to the news headline and an 8-bit video loop of the goat being torn apart by tiny black pixels of jackdaws. “Are you sure you weren’t involved? I thought I felt you do something while we were on the way out...Did you put grain in that goat?”
“Oh no, you caught me. All my nefarious doings,” Crowley said with a laugh, before taking a sip.
“And here I thought you were just feeding the birds.”
“I was,” Crowley said, finishing off the drink and setting the tiny cup down. “Just, you know, didn’t want to make a further mess on the ground and there was this really nicely made feeder already set up, wrapped like a present in festive red ribbon...”
“Crowley. How much grain did you put in there?”
“I don’t know. Enough for a few weeks?” Crowley shrugged.
“Do you mean for people or for birds?”
“Is there a difference? Oh, you’re right, there is a difference. Scale and such. Erm, squirrels, I think? Enough for squirrels to eat for a few weeks. Splitting the difference, you know. Between a human and a bird.”
“I can’t even begin to explain how many things are wrong with your estimation methods,” Aziraphale sighed. “But what you did with the grain is destroying that poor goat!”
“Just a little something to help some little birds manage during a long winter.” Crowley bent down to steal a sweet cocoa-inflected kiss from the angel. “A long winter together.”
Aziraphale sighed. That light touch of lips ended quicker than he expected, than he wanted, so he turned in his chair and drew Crowley down into his lap for another kiss. The demon was cold from being outside, but warmed up quickly in his arms.
“Better?” Aziraphale asked. “You felt cold.”
“Mm-hmm, much better.” Crowley slid his arms around Aziraphale’s neck. “I’m never cold when I’m with you. Not for long.”
“Speaking of which, no more burning goats,” Aziraphale said sternly.
“No burning goats,” Crowley agreed. “This year.”
“Wait, this year. What do you mean this year?”
“Your words, angel, not mine. ‘No burning goat this year.’ Besides, there’s always next year for a little goat burning. Though now it’ll be a race to get to it before the jackdaws. They’re clever and have long memories, once they know someone or something is a source of food, they never forget. I’m excited, it’ll be fun to see if I can get to it first before they do.”
“Crowley!”

2023 Reads: thelonelybrilliance
Final count 72! I set a goal of 52 originally but raised the bar when I realized that would only bring me into early November.
Decided it would be fun to share some stats and recommendations along with the full list.
First, ten recommendations:
The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (best completed series)
Gregory Orr, The Last Love Poem I Will Ever Write (best new poetry read)
Minka Kelly, Tell Me Everything (best memoir)
E.B. White, Here Is New York (best short read)
Carrie Fisher, The Princess Diarist (best journals)
Sydney Taylor, All-of-a-Kind Family (best children's lit)
Laurie Halse Anderson, Shout (best poetry memoir)
George Eliot, Middlemarch (best classic)
Michelle Zauner, Crying in H Mart (best food writing)
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown (best sci-fi/ongoing series + best audio drama (Red Rising (Book 1))
Of my 72 reads, 31 were rereads, 41 new . Four were audiobooks, the rest print (primarily e-books). My longest read was David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. My shortest read (I think? A lot of poetry collections are short) was the longform essay, Here Is New York by E.B. White. I read the most books in December (15) and the least in June (2). 50 authors were women, 21 were men, and one poetry collection was multi-author. My most-read authors were as follows:

The Taste of Revenge (9)
Warnings: canon typical violence, mentions of non-consensual drugging, descriptions of character death, mentions and descriptions of jail, car crashes, descriptions of drowning, lying, manipulation, guns, yandere themes, cursing, mafia AU, mafia Rafael Barba (trust me, he needs the warning), spoilers for Hannibal, references to Leverage, past Frederick Chilton/Rafael Barba, NSFW moments and angst.
Chapter 9
As you stood waiting to enter the Naval Court with Frederick in between you and Barba, your mind drifted to the first time that you had heard about the Naval Court.
Standing in the bullpen next to Tony, Ziva, and McGee on a cold winter’s day when the heating was broken was not your idea of a good time. Tony, Ziva, and McGee weren’t fairing much better than you were.
“I am this close to begging Director Shepard to let me run around the building.” Tony informed you all with chattering teeth.
“I would join you.” Ziva promised.
“At least it's slightly warmer up here. It’s freezing down in autopsy.”
“Tim.” Ziva gritted out, “My blood currently feels like ice. My limbs are unresponsive and I have goose pimples on top of my goose pimples. Do not tell me that it could be worse.”
“They’re called ‘goosebumps’ Ziva.” Tony corrected her.
The agent spun around to face him and jabbed him in the chest with a finger, “Anthony DiNozzo, I do not care that I have butchered one of your pointless idioms. If you correct my English one more time, you will be running around the NCIS building to escape me. It would be fruitless but at least you would be warmer before you die.”
You stifled a chuckle and stuffed your hands into your coat pockets as Tony moaned about being betrayed by someone who preferred warmer climates like him.
“Why are we here? There’s no case. I would much rather be huddled in a ball underneath my quilt right now with the air conditioner on as hot as it can go.”
“You’re here to learn about the Naval Court,” the voice of your director had your heads snapping around to face her where she stood on the stairs with Gibbs standing next to her. Not for the first time, you considered the possibility that there could be something more than platonic between the two of them.
“I thought they were a myth.” McGee whispered, nudging you.
Your boss stared at him until McGee developed a sudden interest in the wall behind the Director’s head.
“What do we need to know about them?” Ziva asked in a business-like tone.
“If you’re ever brought before the three Admirals and their Behavioural Specialist, act like you would in a courtroom. They have more influence than you can possibly imagine and they have seen things that would make your nightmares afraid. Keep your head down, and you’ll never encounter them.”
The doors dividing you, Frederick, and Barba from the members of the Naval Court opened inwards and a man in a naval uniform walked steadily over to you. He saluted once he had come to a stop before you and you returned the gesture. Your injured shoulder twinged in pain and you fought to keep the grimace off of your face.
“They are ready for you. Follow me.”
He pivoted gracefully on his heel and strode back through the arched doorway.
“What next?” Frederick demanded.
“We follow him.” Barba replied.
“And after that? What do we do?”
“Since we’ve disregarded step one, just behave as if you’re in a court room.” You said as you followed the man. Frederick and Barba accompanied you.
“It would have been helpful to know that there was a step one. What is it?” Frederick hissed.
“Keep your head down.” You answered.
The Naval Court was set up like any other courtroom you ever witnessed except for where the judge usually sat. Instead of one judge, there were three admirals, with their name plates in front of them, watching you step into the room. The person occupying the Behaviour Analyst’s chair had you choking back a gasp. She looked just like you remembered her with her straight brown hair, piercing brown eyes and lips set in a straight line.
“You have been called before this court because your situation is a unique one and we must determine whether the three of you are risks to society. We shall begin with you, (Name) (Surname).”
Your throat dried instantly as Admiral Shane spoke without looking up from the notes that he had in front of him.
“The only concern that this court has is your willingness to house a criminal that you have a history with. Explain the reasons behind your actions.”
“My judgement stemmed from the information available to me at the time, Admiral. The information was spoken in a different language and I was informed by Mr. Barba that I would gain access to the translation when his safety was ensured. I did not make this decision lightly and my Director also approved my decision.”
Admiral Shane raised his eyes from the paper and focused on you with his piercing blue eyes, “Doctor Frederick Chilton, you were brought to D.C. at the request of James Sterling of Interpol.”
“Yes, Admiral.”
“That wasn’t a question. It was a statement.”
Frederick tensed.
“Somehow I know this isn’t going to end well.”
“You were brought to D.C. and you conducted an external review on Jethro Gibbs’ NCIS team and how they handled their past case. What was your assessment of the team?”
Apologetically, Frederick turned the tiniest amount in your direction, “My assessment was that they had dangerous levels of co-dependence and that they were allowed far too much leniency at NCIS due to their efficiency at catching their suspects and bring them to justice.”
“I find it hard to believe that you are considered to be an expert in justice when your own methods failed spectacularly, Doctor Chilton.” Admiral Zane remarked. “Was it not your fault that Abel Gideon escaped the BSHCI and brutally murdered one of your nurses and a security guard before capturing and eviscerating you?”
Tremors wracked Frederick’s body and your hand slid into Frederick’s. With a small amount of pressure, you squeezed Frederick’s hand reassuringly as your mind made sense of the new information that had just been revealed. Had you leaned forwards, you would have seen that Barba was resting his hand on top of the hand that Frederick was using to grip his cane in a show of support as well.
“I would argue that I face the consequences of my actions every day, Admiral Zane.”
“I am sure that is comforting to the family of the nurse and the security guard that Abel Gideon killed. Your connections to Rafael Barba and James Sterling caused the mass resignation of the NCIS team. Had NCIS been notified of any crimes during that time period, you would have been charged as an accessory to those crimes as well as being charged with obstructing a federal investigation at the very least. By contacting Mr. Barba after you were contacted by Mr. Sterling, you were nearly responsible for the death of an NCIS agent.”
The dressing down that Frederick was receiving was clearly cutting Frederick deeply. He tried to pull his hand out of your grasp but you refused to let him go while Admiral Zane explained they had subpoenaed Frederick’s call log because they had been investigating the connection between him and Barba.
“What guarantees can you give us that you will not endanger the safety of those around you? What if Abel Gideon tracks you to D.C.?”
Frederick stopped trying to pull his hand out of your grasp and his trembling grew more pronounced.
“Admiral Zane. We cannot speculate the what-ifs when Abel Gideon is the subject of an investigation at the BAU.”
“Thank you, Emily.”
“Very well. Mr. Barba, I trust you are familiar with this process since you have undergone it recently?”
“I am, Admiral Steele.”
“After you were released from prison, you murdered a former Interpol agent. You then proceeded to save the life of the NCIS agent that Doctor Chilton endangered at great risk to yourself prior to surrendering yourself to NCIS and assisting NCIS to uncover the truth and solve their case. We will now turn to our expert for her judgement on the matter of your futures.”
Emily faced the three of you. She wore a neutral expression on her face which would have calmed anyone down who didn’t know her but it worried you because that was the expression that she used during interrogations. Her eyes were steely and they lacked the warmth that you had experienced from your friend. With a word from her, your career at NCIS could be over in a second.
“There are many aspects to consider,” she began. “I recommend that we deliberate behind closed doors and reveal our judgement when we have examined all the evidence.”
“I concur.” Admiral Shane agreed. “The three of you will return to your current residence and we will contact you once we have reached a decision.”
Your throat dried again and your palms began to itch, “Thank you all for your time.” You managed.
The three of you were incredibly subdued on the way to your home. That didn’t change when you crossed the threshold of your door and made your way into the lounge room. A yellow object grabbed your attention and you stooped to pick it up after putting your phone down on the table. When it was in your hand, you realised that it was a stress ball that had rolled off of the table.
Settling down on the floor with your back against the lounge, you threw the stress ball to the wall on the other side of the room and you caught it when it zoomed back to you. You were aware of the fact that Frederick sat down next to you and Barba sat on the other side of him as you threw and caught the ball.
“Why are you so calm about this?” Frederick burst out.
“Because I can’t allow myself to feel anything else.”
“And there’s nothing we can do?”
You shook your head at the same time that Barba snorted, “They were very efficient when it came to prosecuting me in that very courtroom.”
“Your case was an open and shut one. Ours has too many grey areas for it to be handled in the same manner.”
“Why did you hold my hand in the courtroom?” Frederick asked, changing the topic.
“You needed support.” You stopped throwing the stress ball and gave Frederick your undivided attention.
“From you? Rafael, I understand but I highly doubt that your reason is as simple as that.”
“It is.” You defended yourself, “Why did you expect the comfort from Barba?”
The mob boss bristled at your continued refusal to use his first name. Rafael had told himself that your insistence on using his last name when you were speaking to him or referring to him would pass with time but it was chipping away at his patience that you continued to do so when there was no reason to. He had given you permission to use his first name in his office that day when you had brought him coffee.
“We were at college together and we dated for a time but it didn’t work out.”
“We were different people then, Fred.” Barba twisted his head to the side. Your heart sunk into your stomach as your brain registered the soft expression on his face.
“Did Frederick ever care for me at all or was it always Barba? You stupid, stupid girl! Of course, it was always going to be Barba! You’ve served your purpose. Sterling will face the Naval Court soon and his crimes will be brought to light just as Barba’s and Frederick’s were. Why would Barba want anything to do with you now? Why would Frederick?”
Your fingertips dug into the surface of the stress ball as you stood up.
“Where are you going?”
You forced a smile, “I just remembered that I put my phone on silent.” You lied. “I’m going to check to see if there is an update from the Naval Court.”
With quick steps, you left the lounge room and snatched your phone from the table as you passed it. Not caring about the squeak your door made as it closed, you locked your door and stared at your phone’s blank screen sightlessly. You let your temper get the better of you and you threw the stress ball at the opposite wall. Your vision swam with tears as the ball ricocheted off of the wall and bounced on the floor before rolling over to you with the smiley face facing you. You left the ball on the ground as hot tears cascaded down your cheeks.
