2024 MID-YEAR BOOK FREAKOUT TAG
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024?
Tumblr media
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, probably. It was this or Prisoner's Throne but I can't deny Legendborn is a better and more unique novel overall. I still remember being super gobsmacked when I was done with it. That said, I haven't been enjoying Bloodmarked very much, which is really disappointing.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024?
Tumblr media
The Prisoner's Throne by Holly Black. Was it as good as The Stolen Heir? Not really. But in no shape or form was it bad. I still enjoyed it thoroughly because I love Oak and Wren –- and also we got to see Cardan and Jude again!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to?
Tumblr media
There's a lot but one in particular is The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley. I loved the fuck out of The Guest List and I did enjoy The Paris Apartment by her last year (or was it 2022??), so I'm really hyped about The Midnight Feast. I have heard it's getting mixed reviews, though, but by specific booktubers with established book tastes that differ from mine so…
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
Tumblr media
Even though the author has disappointed me with her other book release earlier this year, I am most looking forward to A Song to Drown Rivers by Ann Liang. It's weird because it's supposed to be a tragedy (which I don't like reading) and a love triangle (which I'm meh about), but it's her first fantasy and the premise sounds really delicious so I definitely want to give it a shot. Comes out during my birthday month too!
Biggest disappointment?
Tumblr media
Speaking of Ann Liang, my biggest disappointment is definitely I Hope This Doesn't Find You. I've already reviewed it so I won't say anymore, other than the fact that I was so crushed because it had such good reviews and also because This Time It's Real is one of my favourite books of all time. I hope I won't get crushed again with her next release…
Biggest surprise?
Tumblr media
Dead Silence by S. A. Barnes. Even now I'm flabbergasted by how much I loved it. It was the first sci-fi horror I'd ever read and I ended up getting super invested in the main cast which was unexpected. For me, thrillers and horror books are less about characters you want to root for and more about the plot/shock value, which is why I couldn't believe how much I loved the heroine and her space crew. It's a gnarly situation for me as a reader considering their fates…
Favourite new author (debut or new to you)?
S. A. Barnes or Riley Sager. I went on a Sager binge starting from December last year to February of 2024 and I really loved his books. There's still two of his books I haven't read though, including the one that just came out this year.
Newest fictional crush?
Oak Greenbriar?? But can he be considered new when I already loved him last year? But if not him, then there's no one else, probably. I don't give my heart out easily, and honestly I haven't had the best reading year this year… even though I've read 44 books. It's kinda depressing, lol.

Online order...
After visiting a different book store this past weekend, I went online to order the books that I was looking for but couldn’t find. The last book on the list won’t ship to my house until November when it’s released. The next to the last book on this list won’t ship to my house until February of next year. Everything else I should be getting within the next few days or so.

“Sorry for Your Loss” by Jessie Ann Foley; a casual review (SPOILER FREE)
I picked up Sorry for Your Loss this week at a used bookstore on a whim. I thought the blurb on the back sounded interesting, but honestly the cover was what got me. I’m a sucker for pretty covers.
Short Summary
Sorry for Your Loss covers a boy, Pup, apart of a large family that on the surface seem very tight-knit, but struggle to talk about their feelings and problems-- the main one being the death of one of the main character’s brothers. I won’t go in depth with the summary, but the story consists of him ultimately trying to break the social barrier people feel with grief; the careful tip-toeing around the subject of those who have passed, the awkward “I am so sorry for your loss”s, and the unhealthy ways we cope to deal with it.
Thoughts
I really enjoyed this book, and I am so lucky I got this wonderful book for only $4. I felt that it really captured the reality of grief. In Pup’s group for bereaved students, they all discuss almost magical moments where they felt a connection to their loved ones who died. Pup, on the other hand, is the only one who hasn’t had that experience. He describes it throughout the book as his brother not being “lost”, because that implies his brother could be found again, like in those moments. His brother is simply gone. And I think that’s the hardest thing to face, obviously, with grief-- one minute they’re here, and the next they aren’t. A whole person with likes and dislikes and their own experiences and preferences and vitality can just vanish.
So how do you deal with that? Well, if you’re like Pup’s brother Luke, you fill the void with substances until you’re too numb to notice, or if you’re like the majority of Pup’s family, you just ignore it. Shove it down deep inside of you, never speak their name, and hide away all photos and reminders so you aren’t faced with those earth-shattering feelings of absence.
But, sometimes in that absence you find something, like Pup. Through the absence of his brother, he finds a passion for photography and captures it instead. Unlike his family, he directly confronts the absence and embraces it. I think the phrase “everything happens for a reason” is quite frankly bullshit, but I like the phrase that “everything will find it’s place in your life”. Things happen, and you have to roll with the punches and find it’s place in your life so you can continue to live and thrive. Not despite it, but in spite of it.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed this book a lot, I tore through it within a day or two of buying it. It’s an easy read with a lot of personality. This wasn’t a life-altering book, but I had a good time reading it! I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a character-focused one-off story about grief. Despite it’s subject matter, it wasn’t a super heavy or emotional read for me. I’m tempted to check out the author’s other books based on my experience with this one. Not only am I sucker for pretty covers, I like reading about people just experiencing and processing feelings.

Some people actually liked this, so some Alternate Bullshit I'm latching onto and adding here thanks to an abandoned fic I found ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/30813425/chapters/76064342#workskin ): Shujin Exchange Program! Bc merged timelines is more fun and easier to deal with- Timeline-wise, it'd be 2017-ish; post-P5Strikers and the start of their final year of high school for most of them, minus Futaba who'd be in the class below everyone else. The fic I linked has it so all of the Shujin Thieves are staying with the Fentons, but I think it'd be funny if they were split between the Fenton and Manson households. Specifically, I think it'd be funny to have Ann and Ryuji - the sunniest little extraverts of the bunch - be staying with the local goth girl Sam. Like just imagine the initial meeting between them; Sam being all stand-offish and maybe even a little catty bc of course her parents picked the two blonde sunshines to host for this... But it turns out they're both really nice - Ann shows a genuine appreciation for goth culture and fashion and Ryuji is a baby punk so they all actually get along pretty well. I think nobody should leave Futaba alone in the Fenton house, let alone the lab. Or the Ops Center. Ren is about the only one that could potentially reign her in from touching everything she's not supposed to. Until given reason, of course. Something I think could also be fun to play with for Ren being in such close proximity to Danny is how Personas are technically either classified as or just are spirits. Like just imagine, Danny greeting these two kids his family is hosting for the exchange program and his ghost sense isn't going off, but they don't feel normal either... Secret identity shenanigans!
I have So Many Thoughts on this, but I should probably. Organize them first before I make something big hgdfsd
I've been playing with character ai too much so here's some Danny Phantom x Persona 5 crossover bullshit that I've thought too much about-
Disclaimer: I have not been active in the DP fandom for literal years so criticism on that side is welcome
The PTs get yoinked over to Amity Park probably bc of Vlad
Timeline for them is post November 20th or mid-third semester
Depends on if we want antagonist Akechi or reluctant ally Akechi for the Thieves
And if Maruki shows up to continuously screw things over
Either (1) PTs immediately get found by Vlad and he yoinks Joker to be rescued by Danny bc "wtf is this asshole doing now- oh that's a human ah shit-"
Or (2) they manage to evade him and hide out in Amity for a while before getting the attention of Danny
With 1, we get badass breakout with Danny seeing Joker's thieving and Persona bs in action and Joker seeing Danny's powers
And an easier team-up between Team Phantom and the Phantom Thieves when the PTs get the name of the asshole who took Joker
With 2, we get More Conflict Potential with Danny being like "who tf are you, you look like villains but you beat up [insert ghost here] sooo?"
A lil bit of distrust, but I can see Joker working his magic a lil and at least getting a small deal of "we'll help you with these guys if you give us information on the whole Ghost Thing Here"
Should Danny continue to distrust them/not like Joker being so Vague, potential attempt to overshadow him
Which. Would Not Go Well with the fact that boy has at least 6 other parts of his soul that can be like "yo What The Fuck" and kick him out
But once that trust is up and shit, fun teenage vigilantism with superpowers!
And trauma bonding!!
