Alan Splet, David Lynch, Ann Kroeber – Sounds Of A Different Realm CD
RIP David Lynch a voice so unique that you could easily take him for granted. A voice so singular that Lynchian is a word that you immediatly know what it means but have trouble describing it to someone who doesn't.
We are without him now.

DPxP5 - Skin-Deep Beauty
Ann has always been hyperaware of how people look at her.
Disapproving looks from teachers and peers. Smirks and ogles from boys. Jealous glares from girls. Stares from Kamoshida. Curiosity from Ren. Worry from Ryuji. Admiration from Yusuke.
She wasn’t naive enough to think that Amity Park would be much different. So walking through the halls that first week, she doesn't pay them much mind.
The nerdy crowd in awe. The jocks scouting their new ‘prey’. Double-takes from just about every underclassman at the school.
Most of it is due to her odd company - turns out the son of a family of ghost hunters, a hardcore eco-goth, and a self-proclaimed lady’s man/tech geek have a bit of a reputation. All outcasts in one way or another. Something that she and the others from Shujin easily connect with. They decide to stick together as a band of seven by the end of that first day. And eventually, eyes fall off of them.
Only one crowd was unfazed by her company - or rather, incensed by it. The popular girls - or the 'A-listers' as Sam liked to call them, with all the sarcasm and derogation she can muster.
From what she's said, they’ve barely calmed down since freshman year. Cheerleaders, dating the bullying jocks, obsessed with their looks and new trends, catty and shallow bullies in their own right… They're walking stereotypes, honestly.
And Ann can feel the insecurity in every glare. It’s almost comical.
Still, she barely gives them a passing glance. And advises Sam to do the same. After all, she's dealt with worse.
A comment that gets a look of curiosity and concern to her host sister's face, but she doesn't press the issue.
Eventually, Ann is caught by herself at her locker before lunch one day. And approached by the little clique.
“Heeyy~! Ann, right?” The head of the group of girls - Paulina - calls over, her tone sickly sweet. "You should totally sit with us at lunch today!"
Ann gives the girls a polite smile. “Sorry, I promised to sit with my friends today. Maybe tomorrow-?”
“You’re joking, right?” That blunt interruption makes Ann pause, her polite smile dropping a bit. “Those losers are your ‘friends’? Come on, you’re way too good for them.”
Ann’s expression twists a bit. “Excuse me?”
Paulina chuckles a bit. “No, I get it! New school, new people, new country - you don’t know how things work here! So let me tell you; you’re settling for the bottom-feeders. I mean, what can they give you that we can’t?
That gets her to scowl, a spark of anger in her eyes as she turns toward the girls. “For one, actual friendship. I’ve known most of that group for years, while I’ve known you for five minutes. And already you’re putting them down to try and make yourself look better?”
Paulina actually looks shocked by that response, blinking for a moment before she matches that scowl on Ann’s face. “I’m doing you a favor, newbie!”
Ann scoffs, fighting the urge for her eyes to roll back into her skull. “Yeah, right. I’m not interested. Not today; not ever.”
The girls scoff right back, offended. Like she should care. The blonde in the group - Star? - she growls something about her ‘regretting that’ before the group finally walks off in a huff.
Ann sighs, mumbling to herself in Japanese as she finishes up at her locker. Just venting remaining frustrations to herself. Once she finishes at her locker and bumps into Sam on the way to the cafeteria, there’s a smile back on her face, eager to chat up her host sister to forget that little encounter.
Sam doesn’t tell her that she heard the whole thing from down the hall. But she certainly smiles wider as Ann walks with her to lunch.
(And as promised! @galaxy-turtle-genesys )

A Dyer Warning?: Extreme cruelty and Emma Electa Dyer, the Six-Husband Woman
g Emma’s divorce record from her next-to-last husband. Recently I’ve been writing about a lot of Packard divorcees, specifically the Mormon Ella May Rhodes last month, three women in December (Ida Margaret Leisen, Jessie Bonnalee Foster, and Laura Belle Meyers), and many more in the past. [1] This post will focus on one woman in particular: Emma Electa Dyer. Emma was born on September 11, 1888 in…

2024 MID-YEAR BOOK FREAKOUT TAG
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024?
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, probably. It was this or Prisoner's Throne but I can't deny Legendborn is a better and more unique novel overall. I still remember being super gobsmacked when I was done with it. That said, I haven't been enjoying Bloodmarked very much, which is really disappointing.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024?
The Prisoner's Throne by Holly Black. Was it as good as The Stolen Heir? Not really. But in no shape or form was it bad. I still enjoyed it thoroughly because I love Oak and Wren –- and also we got to see Cardan and Jude again!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to?
There's a lot but one in particular is The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley. I loved the fuck out of The Guest List and I did enjoy The Paris Apartment by her last year (or was it 2022??), so I'm really hyped about The Midnight Feast. I have heard it's getting mixed reviews, though, but by specific booktubers with established book tastes that differ from mine so…
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
Even though the author has disappointed me with her other book release earlier this year, I am most looking forward to A Song to Drown Rivers by Ann Liang. It's weird because it's supposed to be a tragedy (which I don't like reading) and a love triangle (which I'm meh about), but it's her first fantasy and the premise sounds really delicious so I definitely want to give it a shot. Comes out during my birthday month too!
Biggest disappointment?
Speaking of Ann Liang, my biggest disappointment is definitely I Hope This Doesn't Find You. I've already reviewed it so I won't say anymore, other than the fact that I was so crushed because it had such good reviews and also because This Time It's Real is one of my favourite books of all time. I hope I won't get crushed again with her next release…
Biggest surprise?
Dead Silence by S. A. Barnes. Even now I'm flabbergasted by how much I loved it. It was the first sci-fi horror I'd ever read and I ended up getting super invested in the main cast which was unexpected. For me, thrillers and horror books are less about characters you want to root for and more about the plot/shock value, which is why I couldn't believe how much I loved the heroine and her space crew. It's a gnarly situation for me as a reader considering their fates…
Favourite new author (debut or new to you)?
S. A. Barnes or Riley Sager. I went on a Sager binge starting from December last year to February of 2024 and I really loved his books. There's still two of his books I haven't read though, including the one that just came out this year.
Newest fictional crush?
Oak Greenbriar?? But can he be considered new when I already loved him last year? But if not him, then there's no one else, probably. I don't give my heart out easily, and honestly I haven't had the best reading year this year… even though I've read 44 books. It's kinda depressing, lol.

DPxP5 - The Mansons' Host Kids
The foreign exchange program was a surprise, but not entirely unwelcome for Sam. Until her parents dropped the bombshell that they will be hosting two of the kids. For fuck's sake, one of them is literally a model despite being her age - blonde hair, blue eyes, thin and pretty, magazine covers and interviews- God the more she looks at her picture the more she looks like Star.
Her new host brother doesn't look all that better - a jock posing as a punk with that bleach-blond hair.
She hates it.
And she hates it even more when they actually show up and act all sunshine and smiles, especially the girl, Ann. It's just a reminder of the conventional 'family' Sam's parents wished they got to enjoy.
She doesn't even notice the piercings on Ryuji, Ann's variety in her bags, or how the two cringe and shrink in at how painfully cheerful her parents are to have them as 'part of their family'. She just gives them the cold shoulder. All of them. And rants to Danny about her frustrations when Tucker starts begging for Ann's number.
That resentment bubbles over one night when Ann stays with Sam to help clean after dinner. Especially as Ann tries to ask about her fashion to fill the very purposeful silence.
"You can drop the act, yknow." Sam cuts her off, annoyed.
A tone that seems to genuinely confuse the blonde. "Sorry?"
"The whole smiles and rainbows and tolerant shtick. I can smell the bullshit from here. Your poser friend doesn't help matters."
Ann's eyes widen a bit at her bluntness before she settles. "I'm not bullshitting you. And I don't think Ryuji would count as a 'poser'-"
"Please, he's got 'jock' written all over him. Like he's just trying to be 'cool'. It's not gonna work. Not on me."
Ann can't help but give a huff of a laugh. "And here I thought those cliques were just for crappy American movies-" She stops her tease when she sees Sam's glare her way.
"He hasn't run in over a year. Not competitively. And he dyed his hair our first year of high school. Mostly so I wouldn't be the only blonde in class."
That gets Sam's attention, softening her annoyance a bit. Come to think of it... It is odd that a Japanese girl would have flaxen blonde hair...
"I ask about your fashion because I'm genuinely interested. It looks good on you! And I know Japan has different fashion subcultures than here, so I don't want to be insensitive or compare it to something it's not, yknow?"
"Seriously?" Sam asks with almost a laugh in her voice.
"Seriously!" The blonde's smile brightens. "I didn't come here to poke fun at Americans. Well- not too much anyway." She quickly and jokingly corrects herself. A joke that actually gets Sam to chuckle a bit.
"We deserve most of it, honestly."
"Heeyyy, don't lump yourself in with that!"
The two girls finish the dishes quickly, but still linger in the kitchen for a long while, chatting and swapping stories and fashion tips. Turns out Danny’s host siblings are friends with Ann and Ryuji.
Maybe this whole thing won’t be so bad.

Online order...
After visiting a different book store this past weekend, I went online to order the books that I was looking for but couldn’t find. The last book on the list won’t ship to my house until November when it’s released. The next to the last book on this list won’t ship to my house until February of next year. Everything else I should be getting within the next few days or so.

“Sorry for Your Loss” by Jessie Ann Foley; a casual review (SPOILER FREE)
I picked up Sorry for Your Loss this week at a used bookstore on a whim. I thought the blurb on the back sounded interesting, but honestly the cover was what got me. I’m a sucker for pretty covers.
Short Summary
Sorry for Your Loss covers a boy, Pup, apart of a large family that on the surface seem very tight-knit, but struggle to talk about their feelings and problems-- the main one being the death of one of the main character’s brothers. I won’t go in depth with the summary, but the story consists of him ultimately trying to break the social barrier people feel with grief; the careful tip-toeing around the subject of those who have passed, the awkward “I am so sorry for your loss”s, and the unhealthy ways we cope to deal with it.
Thoughts
I really enjoyed this book, and I am so lucky I got this wonderful book for only $4. I felt that it really captured the reality of grief. In Pup’s group for bereaved students, they all discuss almost magical moments where they felt a connection to their loved ones who died. Pup, on the other hand, is the only one who hasn’t had that experience. He describes it throughout the book as his brother not being “lost”, because that implies his brother could be found again, like in those moments. His brother is simply gone. And I think that’s the hardest thing to face, obviously, with grief-- one minute they’re here, and the next they aren’t. A whole person with likes and dislikes and their own experiences and preferences and vitality can just vanish.
So how do you deal with that? Well, if you’re like Pup’s brother Luke, you fill the void with substances until you’re too numb to notice, or if you’re like the majority of Pup’s family, you just ignore it. Shove it down deep inside of you, never speak their name, and hide away all photos and reminders so you aren’t faced with those earth-shattering feelings of absence.
But, sometimes in that absence you find something, like Pup. Through the absence of his brother, he finds a passion for photography and captures it instead. Unlike his family, he directly confronts the absence and embraces it. I think the phrase “everything happens for a reason” is quite frankly bullshit, but I like the phrase that “everything will find it’s place in your life”. Things happen, and you have to roll with the punches and find it’s place in your life so you can continue to live and thrive. Not despite it, but in spite of it.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed this book a lot, I tore through it within a day or two of buying it. It’s an easy read with a lot of personality. This wasn’t a life-altering book, but I had a good time reading it! I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a character-focused one-off story about grief. Despite it’s subject matter, it wasn’t a super heavy or emotional read for me. I’m tempted to check out the author’s other books based on my experience with this one. Not only am I sucker for pretty covers, I like reading about people just experiencing and processing feelings.
