Ask a woman why she hates men, she will tell you she was raped at 15 by a boy she thought she could trust, she was brought up to never walk alone at night, always share your location with trusted people, look out for early warning signs of abusive men, carry your keys in your fingers as you walk back to your car, don't leave your drink unattended as it may get drugged. She watched her feminine peers be bashed and killed by their male partners, male politicians taking away her right to healthcare. She was sexually harassed on the bus to work, in the club dancing with her friends, her DMs filled with unsolicited dick pics. She's been referred to as a bitch for sticking to boundaries, a slut for being too easy, labelled an angry feminazi bitch for speaking out about rape culture, a slut that deserved it for being raped. She thought it was normal for her father to only express the emotion anger, the child brides that are sold and raped daily globally, the milions of women who are victims of genitalia mutilation. When she speaks up about these issues men turn a blind eye to it because they're "a good guy and don't do that" so it mustn't be a problem. She witnessed her mum having to do all the parental and house labor while her dad worked and would come home, expecting a beer in his hand and the TV remote in the other. Her father taught her that men like women a certain way and that there's no other reason for women to exist but cook, clean, satisfy and birth. She hates men because this world was made by men for men. She hates men because she's tired of being treated as property instead of a goddamn human being. She hates men for continuing the patriarchal narrative instead of listening and assisting women in dismantling the patriarchy. She hates men because they've never given her a reason to love them. She hates men because they hate us.

When people provoke you because they aren't getting the reaction they wanted that makes you look like the stereotype they're projecting on you in order for them to play victim, that is racially based harassment.

Black girls, just start crying. Don't get angry, start crying.

I have a really important question

So, as some of you may know, I'm creating an entirely-told-through-comic story of my rewrite of Disney's Wish. My rewrite changes Asha's personality to fit with who I enjoy to see in media, edits her design to make her less generic and more representational of the culture she is from, and adds a Starboy to act as her foil and trigger her character arc (as she does to him). Asha in The Fallen Star is a spoiled, Kusco-like princess insistent on getting her wish to become the greatest sorceress granted by her adoptive father, King Magnus. She doesn't care much for the people of her kingdom and yet still expects them to obey her every command. She's rude, self-centered, and sassy.

Now, I'm 100% on Korean, which means I am not black at all. So I've been doing some research about black culture and traditions to make sure I'm accurately representing Asha, even if it is in my own silly little rewrite. A great account I recommend following is @creatingblackcharacters, as they have so many good resources for writing black characters, especially if you're not poc.

For example, I cut out a scene where some children in Rosas braided Asha's hair with flowers (a reference to Tangled) because I learned that hair is a very important thing in black culture. I didn't want Asha to protest having people she was uncomfortable with do her hair because Starboy told her to be nice. Her braids are a special thing that connects her to her birth parents, and respecting that boundary was more important than shoving a reference in for me.

Now, I recently came across another article addressing the "angry black woman" stereotype in media. A pretty famous example of this is that patronizing and racist comic panel of Serena Williams. Essentially, the stereotype is suggesting that a black woman being angry is because she's a "beast" and "can't control her emotions" instead of thinking why she could be justifiably angry.

Here's the thing. TFS!Asha gets angry. She yells. She throws things and lashes out at people. She has visible muscles and a strong build. She makes threats and hurls insults. She loses control of herself at times. She has panic attacks and is closed-off and rude after she comes out of them. She's Kusco on steroids, basically, if Kusco was fueled by not only wayyyy to much self-confidence, but fear that if he didn't guard his heart, it would get shattered.

Part of Asha's arc is her learning to move forward (not move on) from her trauma as a child, when Stars rained down and killed her parents. She puts up with more stuff and learns to temper her anger, but she's still passionate. She's still witty and sarcastic. She's just opened herself up to other people, now.

Now here's my question: do you think my Asha is the "angry black woman" stereotype?

I can't think of any examples off the top of my head where this is shown nicely in media. If you do think that Asha is a caricature, please please tell me what could be improved! I really want to make sure I'm respectful of Asha's Amazigh heritage and to actually showcase parts of that if I can.

Un amphithéâtre

Il était une fois un amphithéâtre. Une femme s’avance. Chignon blond, costume tailleur, rouge à lèvre et pour son assemblée un grand sourire. Elle est fière, sur son regard ça se voit, dans son discours ça s’entend. La voilà qui commence par une pluie de remerciements. C’est un bien joli cadre pour parler de féminisme et d’écologie, politiser ces luttes, en faire un front commun, telle la thématique du jour : l'écoféminisme ! Les autres femmes et leurs chignons applaudissent. Bravo, bravo ! Quelles belles idées ! Oui soyons toutes sœurs, trions nos déchets et mangeons bio ! La satisfaction se lit sur leurs visages. Que de bonnes intentions en perspective ! Oui, c’est certain, le monde changera enfin sous les belles actions de leurs petites mains manucurées ! Au fond de la salle, elle les regarde, toutes mignonnes à s’agiter parler compost et graines de courge, elles ont tout compris, oui, c’est ça… Elle pourrait crier et s’énerver, casser l’ambiance, reprendre son étiquette de rabat-joie en insistant sur les enjeux décoloniaux, sur la place des pauvres dans les luttes écologistes et des autres minorités, les queers, les racisées, les invalides, à oser parler d’oppression et de radicalisation… Oui, elle pourrait prendre le rôle de la angry black woman puisque c‘est ce que tout le monde  attend d’elle, si facile à incarner quand on se retrouve seule au milieu de jolies bourgeoises trop parfumées qui croient avoir tout compris à la vie. Elle pourrait, oui, et parfois elle le fait et elle l’assume. Ce qu’on pense d’elle n’est pas son problème, tant qu’elle aura des choses à dire, elle les dira. Même s’il faut parfois crier pour se faire entendre. Et quand ça ne suffit pas, elle se lève et elle s’en va, claquant la porte sur tous ces jolis sourires. La rabat-joie, c’est elle, oui, et bien tant mieux. Si sa colère permet de faire entendre les histoires et les voix de toustes celleux qui dévient et dérangent, ainsi soit-elle. Son écoféminisme sera pluriel, émotionnel et rebelle ou il ne sera point.

My biggest fear as a woman is to give birth to female baby. To teach her growing up how to minimize the risk of getting assaulted, abused and/or killed because men still hate women. That men will talk over her in spaces such as in academia and the workplace. If she is lesbian or bisexual, men will see her sexuality as a fetish, merely a performance for the sexual gratification of men. That as a woman, especially a black woman, she will have try 10 times harder to get the same praise and success as a white man. I will have to teach her the early warning signs of abusive men. Knowing that statistically speaking, no matter how hard I try to shelter her or teach defense techniques, that one day she will come to me seeking comfort from the trauma she endured from the hands of men. I think there's nothing worse than knowing if I was to have a daughter, she'd have to grow up in the same world I did.

I woke up today feeling sad. I don’t know why but I randomly thought about this really cruel teacher I had back in high school who was super mean to me for absolutely no reason. I remember being told to sit in her class to finish a test I had missed but as soon as I walked into her class, she yelled at me in front of her students for “disrupting” even though she was expecting me.

It was super embarrassing. She demanded that I go “sit in the corner and not make a sound” and as I did, a few her of students were like, “ Damn. What did she even do?” She just continued on teaching.

I don’t know why that bothers me still. I was confused as to how I was disrupting her class back then. Perhaps she was irritated by something else and took that irritation out on me but in that moment, it felt like she took one look at me and got angry and wanted to humiliate me and she did.

I wonder if that’s why the “angry black woman” in me comes out whenever I felt disrespected. I automatically feel how I did in that moment - torn down for simply existing.
