Cloud/Roche fic: "Colors Without Names"
- Excerpt from a work in progress -
(For @ffviirarepairweek 2025, Day 7: Arts.)
Excerpt rating: Teen (for language and innuendo)
Premise of WIP: Cloud is only performing at the Honey Bee Inn tonight as part of his plan to infiltrate Don Corneo’s mansion and save Tifa. Cloud’s too worried about Tifa to enjoy himself (not that he’d enjoy any of this under other circumstances, either).
But then Cloud spots Roche in the audience. Roche is watching Cloud intently… and sketching in a sketchbook? Cloud’s night is about to take a colorful detour—a detour that could change his life.
Excerpt (1,093 words):
The lights above the stage are blinding, and whoever is controlling the damn spotlight has a real talent for angling it right at Cloud’s eyes. Cloud is sitting in a chair on the stage of the Honey Bee Inn as a honeyboy applies makeup to Cloud’s lips.
“You were born for this,” the honeyboy says, smiling.
Ugh. Cloud’s so ready to be done with Wall Market.
The spotlight shifts away from Cloud’s face, and Cloud blinks rapidly to try to get his sight back. Echoes of colors and shapes float through Cloud’s vision as his eyes recover from being overwhelmed by the spotlight.
But then Andrea Rodea takes Cloud by the hand and pulls Cloud out of the chair.
“Woo-hoo!” Aerith calls from the audience. “Get it, Cloud!”
Cloud tries to glare at her, but then Andrea suddenly draws Cloud closer, getting Cloud off balance.
“You have a fan,” Andrea says in Cloud’s ear.
Yeah, Aerith definitely seems to like what she sees, judging by the constant catcalls from her.
“I mean the gentleman in the SOLDIER uniform,” Andrea says, a laugh in his voice. “At the table next to your friend’s.”
Cloud’s gaze shifts and—
Oh, fuck.
It’s that dumbass from the Sector 7-6 Annex. Roche. He’s not even looking at Cloud, though. He’s looking down at something. A sketchbook? Is he drawing Cloud?
Suddenly, Roche’s eyes meet Cloud’s own.
Cloud expects a wink or a smirk or some other sign that Cloud’s being mocked, but instead Roche just frowns slightly and gets back to his drawing.
Whatever Roche’s agenda is, Cloud has to get out of here. He has to get Aerith to safety. Shinra’s after the both of them (although he’s still not clear on what Shinra wants with Aerith), and Cloud can’t afford to get sidetracked from tonight’s mission to rescue Tifa. The last thing he wants is to waste time on yet another duel with this asshole.
“Don Corneo won’t want to see tonight’s bride candidates for another few hours,” Andrea says. “I’ll set you up in one of our rooms in the meantime so that you can wait in privacy.”
“Thanks,” Cloud says. He’s glad he won’t have to deal with hours of public scrutiny. And it’ll be good to have someplace to stay out of Roche’s sight.
Andrea smiles. “You’re very welcome.”
---
After the performance, a honeygirl escorts Cloud and Aerith to their rooms. Rooms—plural.
“No. We shouldn’t split up,” Cloud says as the honeygirl gestures for Aerith and Cloud to enter two rooms across the hall from each other (she gestures for Aerith to take the room on the left side and for Cloud to take the room on the right side).
“You mean you want to share a room with me?” Aerith says. “You know what kind of place this is, right?”
Cloud scowls. “Yeah, I do. And that’s exactly my point. You shouldn’t be alone here.”
The door to Aerith’s room opens. Madame M saunters out. “She won’t be alone. I’m not satisfied with her dress. I’ve brought my tailor to make adjustments. Don’t tell me you want to join us for the show?”
Cloud’s ears heat up. “No, I—”
“Good,” Madame M says, grabbing Aerith’s hand and pulling her into the room. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay in that room of yours until you’re summoned.”
“You okay?” Cloud says to Aerith.
But Aerith isn’t listening to him. She’s already chatting up the person who Cloud assumes must be Madame M’s tailor.
“Don’t worry your pretty head about us,” Madame M says. “You have enough on your plate already.”
What?
The door to Madame M and Aerith’s room slams shut.
“Your room, sir,” the honeygirl says, once again gesturing for Cloud to enter the room on the right.
“Yeah, thanks,” Cloud mumbles.
The door closes quietly behind him. The room is pretty big and surprisingly nice, even if it’s still an unmistakably Wall Market-esque aesthetic: the duvet on the large bed is black, the pillows are a deep purple, and there are red lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
There’s a knock at the door.
Cloud stiffens and readies his sword. It could be anyone on the other side of that door.
Cloud cracks the door open.
…It’s Roche. He’s holding a sketchbook and a bouquet of colorful flowers.
Cloud shuts the door in Roche’s face.
“I come in peace, my friend,” says Roche from the other side of the door.
“Go away,” Cloud says.
“Am I interrupting something?” Roche says. “I hadn’t realized you already had company, although I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. You’re very fetching in that dress.”
This guy is such a pain.
“Go away,” Cloud repeats.
“Are you sure that’s what you want?” Roche says. “I can help you. I’ve heard a little rumor that you and your friend are trying to gain access to the infamous scoundrel Don Corneo. I assume you’re hoping that one of you will be chosen as tonight’s bride. But I regret to inform you that you’re not likely to even be invited into the building if you can’t play your part more convincingly. Your body language is all wrong. Let me offer you some pointers.”
“What, you like to dress up and seduce mafia bosses in your spare time?” Cloud says.
“I’ve been sent on more than a few honeypot missions involving corsets and high heels, yes,” Roche says. “Such missions aren’t my favorite, honestly—the clothing is wonderful but the men are such bores—but I’m told I’m very, very good at them.”
Cloud tries and fails to imagine Roche in a dress, seducing some rich guy. “I don’t buy it.”
“Yes, well, I don’t buy you as a coquettish mafia bride, either, my dear,” Roche says. “And neither will Don Corneo or his men. I assume you have a very good reason for wanting to gain access to Don Corneo’s mansion tonight. If you want to succeed, you’ll let me help you. Are you sure you want me to leave?”
Cloud opens his mouth to say, “Yeah, I want you to fuck off, thanks,” but he hesitates. He needs to succeed tonight. He needs to get into that mansion, get Tifa, and get out. And the only way to do that without facing down an army of mafia goons is to play the part of mafia bride convincingly. And it’s true that Cloud has absolutely no idea how to do that.
…Damnit.
Cloud opens the door. “Fine,” he says. “Get in here.”
Roche grins. “I thought you’d never ask.”

Rebirth update 5
Just got done with costa del sol and have to say, slightly annoyed at the moment. Just got a date quests which forces you to go with Aerith. Now that by itself isn't a problem, the game loves forcing you to go on dates you don't want to go on, and Aerith also goes on a date with Tifa. Clearly anything is a date in this game. The problem is that I'm trying to keep Aeriths affection rating low so I don't want to finish the quest, but after talking to the NPCs initiating the quest I no longer had any option to refuse to do it. This also wouldn't be too big of a problem....if it weren't for the fact that now Aerith is following me around Costa Del Sol wherever the hell I go. Also, I've noticed that with Aerith our "relationship" is always forced from the outside. Either it's Aerith forcing Cloud on a date in Remake, the Wall market people or other NPC's just asserting they're love birds, Aerith forcing Cloud up a clocktower or grabbing his arms when he's clearly uncomfortable. It never comes from Cloud himself, it's never natural. It actually kinda reminds me of Cleriths trying to force Cloud into something he clearly doesn't want. It's honestly really uncomfortable to see. Anyway, the sidequests here were fun but not the easiest to get through. Getting a perfect score on the piano took me at least 5 tries and required me to reset the entire game when I made a mistake since it didn't allow a simple "try again". Got very lucky with RedXVIIs football game, took me about 3 resets I think, and managed to get through barrets pirate minigame after some trial and error as well. Biggest issue was finding the yellow hand in spot for the segways, I accidentally finished the entire "cactuar photo" sidequest while just riding around looking for the yellow hand in.
My beachwear style matched Tifas naturally, so that was nice, and I like it when the game is more obvious about what the right choices are, like choosing to go help Tifa and Red during the beach assault. Wasn't sure what the good and bad options were during the beach conversation though so I looked it up and discovered I actually didn't select the best option for Tifa in Junon, which is unfortunate but still. Also found out that every option is "good". Fighting with Tifa in a bikini adds at least one star to this game, and in general I am always happy though when running into Andrea Rodea or Madam M so all in all good times. And Johnny is just always good fun. Something I realized I am not too big a fan of are the summonings in general. In FFVII unfortunately summoning has never been a massive part of the story like in FFIX or FFX. They could have potentially addressed this by tying them in with "WEAPON" more explicitly, but since that didn't happen they're mainly reduced to just being a mechanic that's there because all FF games need Summonings. But the way to remedy that would be to make the summons an integral part of the world, to tie them into the sense of adventure through exploration, by making them a part of the natural landscape in some way. And the groundwork for that is there, the summoning shrines, those are great. But why is the culmination of these quests done in a soulless vr simulation? These should honestly be like regional bossfights that are unlocked by completing a set of regional intel stuff. I feel like this is a really big missed opportunity. Next up is another round of region intel, I wonder what the speedrun time of this game will be, I'd like to see a speedrun which incorporates doing every single minigame 100%

¿Qué le bastará al hombre?
Insaciable,
indomable,
incurable.
¿Qué le bastará a mi corazón?
Doliente,
herido,
ahogado.
¿Qué será si no eres tú?
Si me siento al borde del precipicio,
mis lágrimas llenan el mar que me rodea.
¿Qué será si no es tu amor?
No me rozas la mano,
me abrazas por completo,
no secas mis lágrimas,
cesas mi llanto.
¿Qué será si no eres tú, roca mía?
Mi Salvador, mi Señor.
Al borde del precipicio me senté,
a mi costado armaste tu cabaña,
esperaste a que me calmara,
esperaste a que te escuchara,
esperaste a que te aceptaste,
esperaste...
Me esperaste,
Me aceptaste,
Me escogiste,
Me amaste.

Ama!.

Juana Barraza
Other Names:
Mataviejitas ( Little Old Lady Killer) and La Dama del Silencio (The Lady of Silence)
Childhood and Adolescence
Juana Barraza was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico on December 27, 1957. Barraza's mother, Justa Samperio, was a stay at home mom but was an alcoholic. Juana grew up in poverty, North of Mexico City, and had never learned to read or write much. The main source of trauma in Juana’s life, it seems, was her mother, Barraza didn’t really know her biological father. When she was about thirteen her mother reportedly exchanged her for three beers to a man, Jose Lugo. He would repeatedly raped her in his care, and by whom she became pregnant with a son. Lugo tied her to his bed, and would continually rape her over and over, even when she had an abortion, or when she gave birth to a son. After five years, her uncles finally found her and rescued her. It turned out, Juana’s mother had been lying to the rest of the family this entire time, saying that Juana had just left with her rapist of her own free will.
Adult Life
Barraza finally left for Mexico City after her mother died of cirrhosis. She underwent several failed marriages, from which she had four children. Her firstborn died in a gang related shooting when he was 24 years old. During the 1980s and 1990s, Barraza held a variety of jobs. She also toured central Mexico as a masked wrestler named La Dama del Silencio ("The Lady of Silence"), which was an alias she chose in reference to her own shy, silent personality. After the birth of her fourth child in 1995, she was short of cash, she began to steal items from shops and later evolved to burglarizing homes. In 1996, she came up with a plan with a friend, Araceli Tapia Martínez, to steal from the elderly. The two of them dressed up in white clothes and pretended to be nurses. They did this in order to gain access to the homes of elderly people living alone. The two continued robbing them once they were inside, however, Tapia was also in a relationship with a corrupt Federal Police officer, Moisés Flores Domínguez, and they concocted a parallel plan to extort Barraza. Flores met Barraza after a burglary that she had committed alone and he demanded 12,000 pesos in return for not arresting her. In 2000, Barraza retired from wrestling, where she earned 300 to 500 pesos per fight, and her situation became desperate. This is when her crimes began to become more violent and rash.
Crimes
From the years 2002 to 2006, Juana Barraza continued her burglaries but she began stabbing, strangling, and murdering those whose houses she was breaking into. It is suspected that she had been responsible for as many as 40 deaths. All of Barraza's victims were women aged 60 or over, most of whom lived alone. She would bludgeon or strangle her victims, and afterward would rob them. It is said that Barraza would pose as a social worker or nurse offering medical services to earn the victims' trust and gain access to their homes without forced entry.

Arrest and Capture
Relying on eyewitnesses and the nature of the crimes, Mexican police believed their suspect was a cross-dressing man or transgender male with broad shoulders, large hands, and a muscular build. Under intense pressure from the media and concerned residents, authorities incorrectly arrested several innocent people, including a nurse, a slew of transgender men, and prostitutes who they believed resembled the suspect. By late 2005, the number of deaths linked to the serial strangler reached 47. Mexican officials had no leads or potential suspects. The Governor of Mexico City, Alexandro Encinas, reached out to the National Autonomous University of Mexico neuropsychologist Dr. Feggy Ostrosky to study the murders. It wasn’t until January 25, 2006, when there was a break in the case when Barraza was seen by a tenant as she left the murder scene of landlady Ana María de los Reyes Alfaro. She ended up being arrested by a passing police patrol. Though Barraza was illiterate, a search of her home found a trophy room with newspaper clippings of the murders. The police also found objects taken from the victims and an altar to Jesús Malverde and Santa Muerte. These were two folk saints commonly venerated by Mexican criminals.
Trial and Conviction
In 2008, Barraza was tried for 30 murders and was found guilty of 16 of them. She admitted to one murder, that of Alfaro, and told the police her motive was lingering resentment regarding her own mother's treatment of her. Aside from the murders she was also involved in 12 robberies. The convictions were mostly for murders she could be tied to through fingerprint evidence. Barraza was sentenced to 759 years in prison, but she will be paroled regardless in 2058, at the age of 100.
Where is Barraza Now?
Barraza received multiple long sentences, all of which adds up to 759 years if served consecutively, but if they are served simultaneously, it’s possible she wouldn’t spend more than 60 years in prison. This is the highest sentence ever given to a criminal in Mexico. She was sentenced at 51 years old, so it’s unlikely she’d be alive after 60 years behind bars. In 2015, Barraza married fellow inmate Miguel Ángel, a 74-year-old man who was serving a sentence for murder in the men's sector of the Santa Martha de Acatitla prison. The marriage lasted only a year after they met just three times. Barraza now sells tacos in the prison courtyard to support her family and works as a gym instructor. One of her main activities at the prison is walking older women around.

Hello! hope you don't mind a little question, because I love how you've constructed Mel as a character in personality and all, but I was wondering because I'm reading that she's the owner of the Honey Bee Inn instead of anything else, Does she work with Andrea Rodea, because I thought he owned it? I ask because I've been thinking of writing him as he's a favorite character and would love to know how the dynamic would work between them! Have an awesome day & sorry if this is a bother
random asks . always accepting
Hi anon! This ask is actually very similar to an old one I received and I fully get why - post VII remake, the HBI has been completely revamped and Andrea was introduced, so I'm aware I'm writing an AU character of sorts.
But in truth Melissa (and this blog) predates the VII remake, being based off the OG where the HBI was not technically owned by anyone and was also portrayed very differently (it was very clearly a love hotel/brothel and not a night club - you may find some interviews in relation to this and how Square decided to modify what the HBI stood for considering the recent audiences).
So, in short, when I started writing Melissa and created her as a character, there was no Andrea Rhodea, haha. I don't think there is a possibility for Melissa and Andrea Rhodea to be in the same universe in relation to the HBI because these two versions conflict directly - and a lot of her background/motives to act is associated to a vendetta against Corneo and overall Wall Market dynamics which are just not present for Andrea's universe.
In conclusion, while I have followed some Andrea muns in the past and joked about sharing the inn, I have never thought how they could interact in the same verse! I guess someone would be going into an AU/different verse, either Mel or Andrea.
Feel free to reach out if you do make the Andrea blog, though! We can probably work something out if you wish to interact. :)
#anon#replied#thank you for sending this in#that old ask has some additional blog resources#which help understand my take on the HBI#and also the OG HBI wiki page may help#but feel free to IM me if you want to chat too~

Ben LaMar Gay has released “Mestre Candeia’s Denim Hat,” off his upcoming album, Open Arms to Open Us, out November 19 on International Anthem / Nonesuch. An homage to improvisatory and rhythmic elements of the Brazilian “Partido Alto” tradition, “Mestre Candeia’s Denim Hat” sees Gay lay a Chicago-style free-jazz synth raga over a swinging, fractured march. The title is a nod to the insight and style of master sambista and partideiro Antônio Candeia Filho. The video is by Andrea Rodea and Erik Mares of the Mexico City based Rhizomes Films.
