#And the third... Idk. I just wanted to show that Julian knows how to make essential oils from flowers.

"I wish I was that rose..."
Eyyy 👀 More stories! With Farmer Myra (@seharuuchan) and Hestia (@g0atmama). Isaac here too! This was dedicated to the old Vine. Hehe...
The Stardew Valley Floral exhibitionl was perhaps one of Lewis's best ideas for the new holiday, as not only local farmers, but all Valley residents who know how to care for flowers and plants can show off the fruits of their labors in floristry. Not to mention the large flow of tourists, which will definitely raise the image of Pelican Town and the major itself in the eyes of the whole Republic. So the idea appealed to everyone without exception (even Sam, with his allergy to pollen).
The time for the event was chosen immediately - early autumn days, when the flowers of the cold season were just beginning to bloom, but everything was still decorated with summer colors.
And so - the day came. People from big cities and distant lands hurried to get off the bus to be the first to see the exhibition stands, the sweetest aromas of exotic plants (and delicious food, special thanks to Gus) wafted in the air, and the variety and splendor of flowers in pots and vases amazed even the most experienced florists. The valley was rich in the gifts of nature, and many would not miss the opportunity to see it all.
Even though for Isaac attending the flower festival was something akin to a vacation or a day off, the adventurer still couldn't understand why Camilla had sent him here as support and a gesture of goodwill from the Castle Village. He could understand the meaning of his presence at Spirit's Eve, after all Isaac was one of the main monster catchers for the event, but why flowers?
Alas, the thoughts of one of the most talented witches in the entire republic were unfathomable to anyone, so Isaac had no choice but to accept his fate and think about what he might do at the festival today. Not that he didn't like the flowers, but the crowd, the incessant noise, and the intoxicating scent of pollen were weighing heavily on his mind. So Isaac thought of nothing better than to walk slowly toward the smoke from the grills where Gus was preparing his famous barbecue, eager to savor the local roast meats and ales.
There were a lot of stands with floral displays and other various goods for sale, each of the exhibitors had done their best, but the most beautiful and unusual, in Isaac's opinion, were the three stands lined up in a row, with three of the most famous and chaotic farmers in Stardew Valley behind them. Farmers who were also his colleagues in his work as an adventurer, two of whom he was more or less on friendly terms with, but the third farmer.... It was a little more complicated than that.
Julian, if the scarred adventurer's memory served him correctly, was more interested in mountain flowers, so it was not surprising that his booth was overflowing with various displays of lavender, chamomile, heather, geraniums, and others flowers. There were also many vials of essential oils and handmade soaps, which the young man with heterochromia made himself. Isaac remembered this at least because he had delivered those same oils to their local healer in Castle Village when Julian had generously given oils to them out of the goodness of his heart.
Hestia's exhibition stand was probably the most unusual among the others. Her whole exposition could be described in one word - lilacs. Many, many lilacs. There were branches of this fragrant plant sticking out almost everywhere. But all over the violet-haired girl's table were small crystals of various shapes and cuts, and inside them were elegant little flowers of the same lilacs. There were also crystals with camellia, forget-me-nots, violets and gypsophila. Near the stand - a real full house: children are tugging at the sleeve of their parents, asking to buy them beautiful crystal key chains with flowers, and young couples choose a romantic gift for each other, with a rather tender and a little clichéd phrase: "my love for you will end only when this flower fades". Hestia was just glad that with her crystal magic she was able to make a lot of people happy while earning herself money to buy expensive seeds.
Some might call Myra's stand old-fashioned, but the classic floral displays that the girl had created with love and care would make even the most picky person gasp with delight. After all, it was a flower festival, and she had plenty of flowers. As if taken directly from a Renaissance painting, beautiful bouquets of chrysanthemums and gladiolus adorned glass vases, and potted orchids stood nearby. But Myra's favorite was the rose, the queen of all flowers. The girl herself was almost invisible behind the huge bouquets and pots, which contained many kinds of roses, shades of soft pink, yellow, scarlet to burgundy, purple....
Isaac himself didn't notice as he slowed his step as he passed Myra's booth. The girl had her back turned to the man, completely engrossed in picking another bouquet of ruby-red roses. A second - and the adventurer's footsteps stopped altogether...
"Didn't think I'd see you here," Julian's welcoming voice brought Isaac back from his reverie to reality, and made Myra and Hestia turn their attention away from their business and toward their guest. "How are you?"
In his usual fashion, Isaac only snorted quietly and bowed his head slightly in greeting. Julian nodded to the taciturn adventurer in return.
"Hey, Isaac," Hestia finally finished with the last buyer of her crystals and waved a hand to Isaac.
Myra, noticing the familiar adventurer, smiled widely, causing the cloaked man to look away slightly. The long-haired girl stepped out of her booth as lush bouquets of roses blocked her view.
"We're glad you were able to come to our festival. Everyone did such a great job with the floral arrangements," still holding the bouquet of red roses, Myra couldn't help but inhale the fragrant scent of the flowerbud.
"I wish I was that rose..." The realization that Isaac had said those words out loud made him abruptly sober up from all those spicy floral scents and panic beyond belief.
"What?..." Myra asked.
"I said you're all gross!" If there's an 'idiot of the year' nomination in the world, Isaac would definitely be the winner. The astonished looks of three farmers were fixed on Isaac, which made the man blush even more furiously. With a flick of his hand, he pulled the hood of his brown cloak over his head and quickly walked away toward the grill. He didn't care about the meat anymore, Isaac was going to drink ale first, and the stronger the better.

Everything You Need to Know about “Shadow and Bone” on Netflix (*UPDATED: POSSIBLE LANGUAGE OF THORNS ADAPTATION INFO)
Since it’s recently been confirmed that we’d be getting S&B content in a few days (finally!), I thought I’d compile and summarize as much info as I could to refresh everyone’s memories! Please spread the word/share this post to those who aren’t up to date! (I’ve seen some people online who are worried about how it’s going to turn out, and I’d like to be able to hopefully reassure those people)
Now, there’s a LOT of stuff, so there’s always the chance I missed/forgot something. This post will be split up into categories based on type of info, so here we go! I went back and listened to/watched both of the big live streams (NYCC and the S&B Charity Competition), went on the Grishaverse Reddit, etc. to find as much (extra/bonus) stuff as I could. (If I missed anything/got something wrong, please feel free to leave a comment!)
Update: A lot of people have been asking where it was confirmed we were getting content soon. I found out from one of the update accounts I follow.
Thanks for reading, everyone!
General/Key Info About the Show
-This first season will be adapting both “Shadow and Bone” and what has been dubbed a “Book 0″ (most likely meaning prequel/backstory/set-up) for “Six of Crows” -In relation to the above point, the timelines are being brought together for the show. (Normally in the books, the two series are set two years apart)(We don’t know how exactly or what this means for the story, but I have a really interesting theory that I thought up in relation to this, message me if you’d like to hear it.) -Leigh acknowledges and understands that some of us have doubts and are worried about the show, but she has publicly assured us (numerous times) of how much she loves the show and cast, how well she thinks the crew/writers did in bringing the Grishaverse to life, etc. See a later point below in the Facts/Tidbits section -The first season will have 8, one-hour long episodes -Alina has been made half Shu (half Asian) for the show! Leigh stated that was decided on after she and Eric had a lengthy discussion on Alina’s character. -The main cast (as in confirmed to be in all episodes) is comprised of Jessie Mei Li (as Alina), Archie Renaux (as Mal), Ben Barnes (as the Darkling), Freddy Carter (as Kaz), Amita Suman (as Inej), and Kit Young (as Jesper) -Wylan and Nikolai are NOT in the first season. (Nikolai didn’t appear until the second book, and Leigh confirmed that at this point in the story, the Crows had not met Wylan yet.) -Other cast members include Danielle Galligan (as Nina), Calahan Skogman (as Matthias), Daisy Head (as Genya), Sujaya Dasgupta (as Zoya), Luke Pasqualino (as David), Julian Kostov (as Fedyor), Simon Sears (as Ivan), Zoe Wanamaker (as Baghra), and more! -The Darkling will also be called “General Kirigan” in the show. From what we know, The Darkling will be the “enemy” to Ravka (so in essence, General Kirigan is his alias/fake persona (what he’ll most likely be referred to for most of the show), and no one knows that he’s actually their enemy. (Meaning it’ll most likely a super big moment when they learn their general was actually the Darkling in disguise)). -The show was shot on location in Budapest, Hungary. (And additional filming took place this past fall in Vancouver) -In order, the 8 episodes are titled the following: “A Searing Burst of Light”, “We’re All Someone’s Monster”, “The Making at the Heart of the World”, “Otkazat’sya”, “Show Me Who You Are”, “The Heart is An Arrow”, “The Unsea”, & “No Mourners”.
Other (Fun) Facts/Tidbits About the Show
-Upon seeing Jessie’s audition, Leigh loved her audition/portrayal of Alina so much that she apparently stated that she wanted her to play Alina or she’d be out of the project. She was sent five auditions to watch, Jessie’s was the third, and she said she didn’t bother watching the rest of them. -Leigh stated that she and Eric Heisserer (the creator of the show) said they were on the same page from the first meeting. All other past meetings with producers and companies about possible adaptations had left her with a bad feeling, but she said they’d had the same ideas about inclusion, story, staff, etc. She said she’s loved the respect he’s shown towards the work (and, in a way, to us the fans) -Netflix apparently also has the rights to adapt “The Language of Thorns” , though we’ve gotten no info on that adaptation yet. (UPDATE: I just watched a Leigh Bardugo event from Feb 2019 (a few weeks after the show was first announced, I think): As of  that day, she said that she thought that they were going to use LoT more for "texture” (IMO that might mean worldbuilding?) in the show. And I don’t know if she was talking about LoT specifically because she was very vague, but she said that there were certain things in the show that she thinks readers will be really excited about. Again, this was over a year ago, back when they were still in pre-production and stuff, so don’t take my word for it. Besides this, I couldn’t find anything else relating to a possible LoT adaptation. Maybe they’ll have the stories from LoT appear as actual folk tales told in the show, and that’s the “adaptation”? IDK. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpHnw8Ygw5c&t=1906s)) -Leigh is an exec. producer on the show! I’m no expert, so I don’t know how much say/power she had in the process, but she definitely had some. -There is a RAVKAN edition of the “Shadow and Bone” book that Leigh says makes a cameo in the show! -Jesper’s guns had custom etchings done on them by a Hungarian antique gunsmith! (And they were so good that Leigh and Eric said that it looked like it belonged in a museum--they were also described to be quite heavy!) -Eric Heisserer is the creator of the show, he is an award-winning writer, well known for “Arrival”, “Bird Box”, and more. (If I remember correctly, Leigh said that he’d reached out to her about making the show!) -A DeKappel painting (maybe the one owned by Van Eck?) was confirmed to be in the pilot episode. -Pekka Rollins and Tante Heleen have been confirmed to be in the first season, but their casting has (up to this point) not yet been revealed. -Bo Yul-Bayur is confirmed to be in the show! (Though Kuwei has not) -Leigh will have  a cameo in (I think) Episode 5! She will be wearing a Materialki kefta and will be opening a door, if I remember correctly. -A lot of the crew was also extremely passionate about the project and fans of the books -The “Lives of Saints” book that was published in October is an actual book/prop that is appearing in the show! -I’m personally fine with Mal, but Leigh says that Archie is going to change everyone’s minds with his portrayal! -The costume designer for the show is Wendy Partridge, known for her work on “Thor: The Dark World”, “Pompeii”, and more!  -The composer for the show is Joe Trapanese, known for composing for “The Greatest Showman”, “Straight Outta Compton”, “Lady and the Tramp”, and more! At the NYCC Grishaverse panel, they revealed a little bit of the score (”Grisha Theme”): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFxIEbsHKJA
Fun Cast/On Set Stories/Facts
-The cast all loves each other, and are all extremely passionate about this show, which is great! (Leigh said that on her second visit to the set, she heard them singing together) -Leigh says that Ben Barnes once snuck up behind her on her first day on set and scared her by whispering “Fine, make me your villain” -Freddy’s favorite Grishaverse book is “Six of Crows”, but most specifically the first line of chapter 2 (”Kaz Brekker didn’t need a reason.”) -Jessie would apparently come to set on some of her days off to support the cast and crew! -Sujaya has stated that her favorite Grishaverse character is Nikolai! (#Zoyalai) -Freddy has become famous/popular with the fandom, one of the reasons being because he often comments on posts/live streams asking something along the lines of “What was it like working with Freddy Carter? xoxo” -Danielle loves Nina and her journey in “King of Scars” -According to a Tweet, Freddy and Leigh said that there had been a scene with “a very pesky gate”--Freddy said that it “wouldn’t be proper to tweet the expletives [he] used that day” and that he thinks he “scarred” Amita and Eric. -Amita’s favorite thing about Inej is her silence, and her favorite Grishaverse book is “Six of Crows” (as of May, where we learned this during a live-stream, she said she’s read it three times and listened to the audiobook twice.) -There was a waffle truck on set on the last day of shooting! -Calahan says that if he could play any other Grishaverse character, he’d want to play Nikolai! -While she did work with the trainer to get more physically fit, Amita learned most of her knife techniques by herself! -Leigh said she cried a lot while on set! (She said there was one scene they were shooting that she has a very clear, vivid memory of writing many years back--based on the context of which she was talking about it, if I had to guess, I’d guess she’s describing the Winter Fete.) -Leigh also said that on one of her first days on set, it was funny/weird to see all the extras in First Army uniforms chilling on their phones, drinking coffee, etc. -One of Calahan’s favorite character dynamics in the books is the dynamic between Kaz and Matthias -There was a moment where Amita was fully in costume and doing amazing, graceful knife work, only to trip and fall when she’d finished. -Amita and Jessie and Sujaya were best friends on set. -Sujaya loved everything about playing Zoya. (Especially her confidence) -Leigh says one of her favorite props was Kaz’s cane, especially because of what it meant to her and the story. -If he could be any Grisha order, Calahan says he’d want to be a Corporalki -Calahan loves Matthias’s journey/arc. -Kit’s favorite Grishaverse book is “Crooked Kingdom”!

I’m currently reading the third book of the Caraval series, and lemme tell you, I’m SCREAMING. Legend you are an asshole and nothing will change that, you can be the prettiest boy in the universe but you won’t fool me. Too bad Tella is falling for all the tricks.... Hopefully this book won’t end in a mess. There is enough mess in the middle though. Jacks is good boi, I love him, he didn’t do anything to make me hate him so far. Lets hope he won’t. I will update this description once I’m through the book and tell what I think. Until then, enjoy this illustration of Legend! Character (c) Stephanie Garber Art by Zsocca
Edit:
I’ve finally read the third book, so I’m gonna write a long summary of my thoughts about the series. Because it gave me a lot of feels. And tons of heartbreaks. (spoilers ahead)
Okay, so the ending was kinda silly. The first half of Finale was making some sense, then somehow something happened and the other half became a mess I’m still trying to get over.
Throughout the book, I felt like Scarlett was pushed into the back, and Count Nicolas appeared only to have Scarlett do something in the first half of the book. Closing off the count-plotline was a good idea but not planned out well. He appeared only for one scene only to die soon afterwards. That’s just wasting of a character.
Same could be said about Paloma/Paradise. She was brought back only to get killed and we didn’t even get to know her. Shame, because I was intrigued by her backstory and personality.
Also the Fates were there and the Fallen Star came in. He could have come sooner? Idk, he could have abducted Scarlett in the beginning and we could have had moments of him and her daughter getting to know each other and the reader would have also got a picture of his motives. Scarlett could have used her wits to get on his good graces. And don’t even get me started on why the heck did she become empress to begin with.
Does Valenda have a government? Surely the empresses/emperors have a council and such who at least get a saying in the ruling of the empire. How can such a mess happen in an empire’s capital while the population does nothing but goes from one ball/festival to another in a span of a few months?
Julian was also made to feel like a background-character. But to give him credit, he is the only accountable male love-interest in this series. He lies a lot, yes, but he is trying to be a good person and he is acting like a decent human! That’s an achievment in this series!
Lets discuss Tella, the problematic child. She was making me bang my head against the wall a few times, but I could understand her problems because she just turned 17 and is basically a needy teenager with an attitude. But then I just got fed up with the way she was running from one boy to the other. Excusing everything Legend did while also complaining about the awful things he is doing to her, only to then run to Jacks for help (and he does help every time she needs him) and then tells him to ‘get lost I don’t like you’. That made me feel like she is just as manipulative as the two men fighting for her heart. Or whatever she has, because they don’t wanna love her.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I didn’t like Dante in the first book, and I didn’t get to like him in the second. He felt like a different person in every single book. Even after it was revealed that he is Legend, I couldn’t unite the two in my head and I still can’t. The author also mentioned that originally they were two separate people and well, it shows. In the third book he was mostly referred to as Legend, and I can understand why: because Legend is Legend and Dante is not really him.
Also, he was kinda useless in the second half of Finale. Tella collected all the infos needed from Jacks, Legend just tagged along to find the stuff. Then he was killed and soon put in a cage. I didn’t understand. He just took the mighty witch’s powers, he was almost as strong as a bunch of Fates, but he still had no power to even stand against Jacks when he popped up.
He is showed as this immortal being who clings to his powers while pushing his own brother away, and then he suddenly changes heart at the very end of Finale. It made no sense. Where did that change come from? What happened to him in that cage that he suddenly felt like becoming mortal for Tella is now the thing he wants? It was abrupt and unexplained.
The powerful, magical being he was in Caraval is nowehere to be seen. He did his tricks in this book too, but he couldn’t really use them to his advantage. Which is strange, considering how smart he was portrayed before - he invented Caraval, he moves the plot behind the scenes - but now he is just out of wits. The mighty Legend from the previous two books couldn’t make it to Finale, and I think it’s due to the fact that he was revealed to be Dante at the end of Book 2 and this threw his character off the road.
Lets talk about Jacks as well. It’s no secret that I like him, but I’ll try to be objective. First of all, he was hinted in Book 1 at the very last page, then hinted at Book 2 in the very first page with a prophecy that shaped Tella’s very idea of love and marriage and set the destiny of her love-life (at least in her mind). Then there is the true love and the beating heart thing from Book 2.
Finale expands on this by affirming that an immortal can’t love, so we assume Jacks is bad news and is entirely selfish with his obsession of her. But his actions don’t line up with the villain he is told to be. We just hear that he does bad stuff, but we never actually see him do anything bad. Although he is able to manipulate feelings (even with his faint power), he is not making any great efforts to use that to his advantage.  He allows Tella to have free will. He lets her use him and his skills when she needs him. He also does his own tricks and twists on their deals, but he never outright lies to her. He is selfish, but also surprisingly considerate. He also constantly lets her go and is not actively trying to get rid of the “rival”. It’s strange. Jacks goes back and forth with her, until the second half of Finale turns him into the villain he was supposed to be from the beginning. He finally strides in, announces what he wants and takes it. But due to the previous history we had with him, this sudden change in his attitude is just as abrupt as Legend’s change of heart at the end.
I guess this was a last minute decision: make Jacks a real villain and give room for Legend to be endgame and get redemption. Which I don’t think ended up well.
And what about the Fates? Dunno, we don’t know. There were a few thrown in there, but aside from Gavriel and Anissa, we didn’t get to know them that much. And the ending casually mentions they fled to North. Fled? Come on, they are magical beings, they could rule the empire if they banded together. Nobody could stop them. Yes, they can die now, but they have powers! Heck, Jacks could make everybody like the Fates if he wanted to, manipulating the emotions of the government and even Valenda’s people.
The thing is, the author created these overpowered beings, and couldn’t find a decent way to defeat them, because by human standards, they are undefeatable. Legend was an important, powerful barrier against them - or not, because he was weak in Finale for some reason.
Also Jacks could have been a key ally from the enemy’s side, if Tella wasn’t so stubborn about pushing him away. He basically worked against his own kind, admitting his and the others’ weaknesses.
The characters are flawed, which is good, they make me proud once and then disappoint me like an impulsive child, so I have no complaint about their characteristics. Keeping them consistent was a problem though.
The series itself was imaginative, full of creativity, it had a magical vibe and an intriguing plot. Too bad this plot couldn’t find it’s clear end.
There were many good ideas thrown in this book, but a bunch of cool items collected in a room don’t make it a harmonic room.
These are my final thoughts: Caraval is fantastic start, Legendary is a good sequel, and Finale is a problematic ending.
Does this ruin the experience? I don’t think so. I enjoyed the series, it kept me at the edge of my seat. Caraval and these characters will surely remain with me, so I thank the author for this wild ride!

Top 10 favourite characters from any fandom
I was tagged by @limalepakko , thank you! Since I have recently listed male characters here (or you know, in August, but we all know time hasn't been a thing for many moons), I took the liberty to list characters in general this time. I also went with which characters feel right at the moment, so does not show all my favourites. I also try to keep these short. (edit: okay so these are not remotely short, I will post a list first and have the explanations be under the cut, read if you want to hear my ramblings c': )
1. Fantine, Les Misérables 2. Javert / Jean Valjean, Les Misérables (yes i am cheating) 3. Carrie "Big Boo" Black, Orange Is the New Black 4. Jane Marple, Agatha Christie's Marple 5. Aunt Lydia, The Handmaid's Tale 6. Bridget Jones, Bridget Jones books & movies 7. Rock Lee, Naruto 8. Sarah O'Brien, Downton Abbey 9. Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables / Anne with an E 10. Sister Monica Joan, Call the Midwife
*
1. Fantine, Les Misérables
I love Fantine with all my heart. I remember reading Les Mis for the first time and her story sending chills down my spine. Her character development makes me so sad, from a girl who falls hard and fast and won't deny anything from her lover, to a woman who is so beaten down by society that she can't do anything but laugh at her fate. But I love how she doesn't lose her pride or her fighting spirit and how she still has the guts to spit in Valjean's face when she sees him after being arrested. And I love how all she does is for her daughter and how despite selling "the gold on her head and the pearls in her mouth" she is content, because all that matters to her is that Cosette will live.
*
2. Javert & Jean Valjean, Les Misérables
I was really trying to limit this list to one character per fandom, but alas, I am but a weak little person. Thus, I am cheating already. The thing is that when it comes to Les Mis characters, Fantine, Javert and Valjean are the eternal top 3 for me, but I'm never quite able to say who I love the most. Last time I picked Javert for the male character meme because I love the symbolism and critique of society his character embodies, but let it be known that Jean Valjean is the best character in all of literature and I will fight you on this. The original soft on crime icon (aside from Jesus Christ but they're the same and you know it). Valjean's character journey is such a complicated one from an ordinary man (no worse than any man) to a person, who had been shaped by society and criminal justice system to be a very dangerous man, to someone you could compare to a saint if you wanted to... To an ordinary man, who would do anything for his daughter. He has so many character-defining moments, the biggest ones being in my opinion the trial of Champmathieu and letting Javert go instead of killing him. I just love Jean Valjean so much and could speak about him for hours.
*
3. Carrie "Big Boo" Black, Orange Is the New Black
Hopping away from the Les Mis hole and into a OITNB hole. I was debating on whether I'd put Boo or Pennsatucky on this list since I love them both so much, but I've been feeling so much love for my angry butch king that it had to be her. First of all, I'm just so happy to see butch lesbian representation where the butch identity is not just a joke. I know OITNB sometimes uses Boo questionably, but in general she is a nuanced character and one of the most interesting ones in the series in my opinion. I'm so sad they forgot all about her on the last seasons. I love everything about her, how she has trouble with feelings besides anger and often deflects serious stuff through humor, how fiercely protective she is of those she loves (boosatucky otp forever fucking fight me), how proud she is of her butch identity ("i refuse to be invisible")... Also, not to express attraction, but... Mama I'm in love with a criminal. And not to be a slut for how characters view religion/spirituality/God, but the relieved smile she has in one of her flashbacks when she says "there's no God... there's nothing", like you can't just do stuff like that and expect me not to love the character to bits.
*
4. Jane Marple, Agatha Christie's Marple
Last time I listed Poirot and was a bit frustrated I couldn't list Marple, but now it's time to right that wrong! I love this little old lady so much. I love Agatha Christie so much for just going "you know who is the person who knows everything that's going on in a community, and thus would make the perfect detective for a detective story? the nosy old woman". As she is introduced in The Murder at the Vicarage: "Miss Marple is a white-haired old lady with a gentle, appealing manner — Miss Weatherby is a mixture of vinegar and gush. Of the two Miss Marple is much more dangerous." She is so likable and witty, you can't help but love her. My favourite portrayal of her is by Geraldine McEwan, she looks so gentle but has such a sharp gaze. I would spill all my secrets to her any day. I also am compelled to tell you that when I was a child we had a costume party at my school and I dressed up as Marple and learned some old lady things in English (it was before third grade so I didn't know much English back then) just for the occasion (such as "thank you, my dear", "what a lovely necklace you are wearing" or "there has been a murder"). Teacher might have thought me rather morbid but I remember that day being quite good.
*
5. Aunt Lydia, The Handmaid's Tale
The Handmaid's Tale is such a great series and a book and Aunt Lydia is such a great character. The way she's capable of being absolutely cruel and vicious, but how she is also protective and caring in her own way. One of my favourite scenes in this series is when Serena Joy (my other favourite, can you tell) tells Lydia to "remove the damaged ones" from a line of handmaids and Lydia tries to argue with her. Sure, she is responsible for some of the punishments these women are now "damaged" by, but she truly believes those punishments were for a greater good and now the handmaids deserve their place with the others as much as anyone else. It is chilling and the character is such a dark shade of morally gray, but I can't get enough of it. The actress who plays her, Ann Dowd, has so interesting thoughts about her, like here. I just love this character so much I could scream.
*
6. Bridget Jones, Bridget Jones books & movies
I'm mostly talking about the movies here because Renée Zellweger's performance is iconic. Plus the movies are what made me love this character first. But I'll give it to the books, they're one of the few books I've laughed out loud while reading. Anyway, how do you even begin explaining the love I have for Bridget Jones... I love how she is a character so many people can relate but who would be a comic relief side character in some other story. Yes, yes, it is really bad that she is constantly described as fat when she really is not, but when I was growing up she gave me hope that people who are viewed as fat and/or unattractive by other people can be admired and appreciated, and they don't have to be super talented at everything and highly intelligent and some kind of a super smooth social butterfly to "make up" for what they "lack". And also that they can have standards (i once dodged a bullet by rejecting someone by pretty much subconsciously quoting Bridget Jones so..). I also love how the comedic tone of everything does not dismiss Bridget's feelings. For example in some other movie we maybe would concentrate on how "stupid" Bridget was to trust that Daniel was in love with her, but in Bridget Jones we concentrate on how Bridget was hurt by Daniel cheating on her, how he is the one who did wrong. Idk I just love Bridget Jones so very much can you tell.

7. Rock Lee, Naruto
Aka the boy who would have kicked Madara in the balls if Kishimoto had any sense of drama and good storytelling. I think I robbed Lee by not putting him on the fav male characters list. You know that post that goes like "gays be like 'these are my comfort characters', 1 literal ray of sunshine, 2 war criminal" etc? This child is the sunshine. I've been reading and watching Naruto again ( @hapanmaitogai is my sideblog for that nonsense) and I'm so ready to adopt Lee and/or Gai. Rock Lee is just such an earnest character, he has a goal he will give anything to achieve and he's the one true underdog in this manga. I love how he's so kind and polite (it's not so clear in English but in the Finnish translation he speaks as formally as he does in Japanese, he uses singular polite "you", calls Sakura "Sakura-neiti" = "Miss Sakura" etc... i love one polite boy). Also, he has the best fights in the series. Like Lee vs Gaara is a Classic, but we simply can't forget that time Lee absolutely crushed Sasuke in just a few minutes, or that time he politely asked Kimimaro not to kill him while he drinks his medicine. The best boy. I love that boy so much.

8. Sarah O'Brien, Downton Abbey
Last time it was Thomas' turn, so now I must talk about the snakiest snake, the queen of weaponized handmaidenry, Miss O'Brien. She is such a great character especially in the first two seasons (I obviously love her on season three as well but Julian Fellowes really tried to make it hard by not explaining her actions at all, didn't he. Well, luckily I am ready to stuff the gaps with my headcanons). She has some of the best comebacks in the series and brings some needed realism in some conversations. I also love how she uses her position as a lady's maid for her advantage and how she is proud of her profession despite being highly aware of the power structures in the Abbey. And then there is the soap. That is such a good character moment, because for a character who always plans ahead, who is ruthless and cunning and intelligent... I don't think O'Brien thought about the soap thing at all before she left the room ("Sarah O'Brien, this is not who you are" hit me like a train). Just once she did something with nothing but anger motivating her and that became one of the defining moments of her character. And one of the defining things of the future relationship between her and Cora. That's why I find the Sarah/Cora ship so interesting, because there will always be the undercurrent of bitter regret. Also Sarah O'Brien and Thomas Barrow are the greatest brotp and Fellowes was a coward for driving the smoking scheming gay best friends apart, and

9. Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables / Anne with an E
I'm not saying L.M. Montgomery is entirely responsible for me having a fondness for strict, older women who first act unkind but have a heart of gold, but she most certainly did not help. Between characters like Marilla Cuthbert and Elizabeth Murray, how can you not fall in love with the type? It's been a while since I read the Anne series, but I really love how Marilla's character has been adapted into the Anne with an E tv series. Geraldine James looks like she was born to play her, she has me in tears so often. She has the ability to portray someone like Marilla, who is a very hard and stern person but feels deeply for her loved ones. I was watching the episode that dealt with Matthew's heart attack and Marilla berating her brother while hugging herself like she was trying so hard to hold herself together absolutely destroyed my heart.
*
10. Sister Monica Joan, Call the Midwife
It was a tough choice between her and Sister Evangelina. I just love these nuns very much. Sister Monica Joan is such a lovable and wise character. She is so knowledgeable of many subjects, from the Bible to astrology, and I feel like her unspecified memory problems and confusion are handled very tastefully. I also love how she's such an important part of her community despite not working as a midwife anymore. She is such a kind woman and gets visibly upset when others are treated poorly. And how could I not mention her saying "I do not believe in weeds. A weed is simply a flower that someone decides is in the wrong place", like... I love her so so much.

I won't tag anyone, but if you read this and you want to do this, consider yourself tagged and you're no allowed to mark me as the one who tagged you!

I'M CLOSING TWITTER FOR THE NIGHT JESUS CHRIST ANYWAY I'M JUST GONNA INFODUMP UNDER THE CUT BECAUSE I'M GOING APE
HI I SPENT ALL DAY WANTING TO/STARTING TO WATCH TOTAL DRAMA SEASONS 4 AND 5 BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE MIKE&.... AND MOOMOO DECIDED TO WATCH WITH ME BECAUSE THEY BINGED TDI SOMEWHAT RECENTLY..... AND IT TURNED INTO ME PERIODICALLY PAUSING TO TALK ABOUT OUR OWN SYSTEM AND COMPARING MIKE&'S WITH OURS SO AN 8 HOUR EVENT TURNED INTO AN ALMOST (CHECKS TIME) 12 HOUR ONE..... they went to bed a while ago so i'm finishing s5 by myself.... and it was cool because i know now they're wanting to get to know the others and ask questions and be involved(!!!!) BUT ALSO i know mike& in general is a controversial character.... but as someone who sort of relates to the internal conflict in a weird way or has this being our first time witnessing someone with DID have their alters identities respected and not being treated like a complete weirdo for being plural... i mean there's the mistreatment a la chris and scott triggering a switch intentionally to help himself in a competition.... but other than that!!! and the ending to s5 which i have not reached but spoiled myself with because i wanted to know what i was getting into before i started!!!! i'm legit falling in love with these guys and want to see them go places and it makes me appreciate the one fanwork i've seen rewriting them a bit even MORE...... also i know mal is the most stereotypical/worst rep of anything, for having a persecutor and knowing their roles i SHOULD be saying it's a little singlet bait-y and knowing they added him in the story as the main villain because they knew that's what people would have wanted to see instead of a system achieving healthy functional plurality.... but he reminds me a lot of our persecutor and how they acted back in the day, we haven't entirely patched up and they still have stumbling blocks sometimes but after getting to know them and realizing they're acting in good faith (even if the good faith is spelled out with self-sabotage), i just have a feeling maybe i need to psychoanalyze mal. ESPECIALLY because of mike (and to an extent the show) treating his headmates like EXTRAS instead as other fully fleshed people (at least in s4, though they got their moments to talk to each other and cooperate) and taking control/acting like the others were getting in his way of *his life*.... and mal being the host before but being locked away and having to force his way out and rule with an iron fist before he was given any mind.... that guy needs a hug. and everyone else (MIKE ESPECIALLY) may need to learn how to communicate better. mal just needs to feel important and get attention when he's doing things that AREN'T being mean or acting out.... also i think i just want to give mal a hug in general. not saying mike is the real villain of s5 but i AM saying when he was working with everyone to overthrow mal, they were very clear that mike being in charge, while better, was still not the best because they get pushed aside and not taken seriously.... so i think if they just went to therapy or TALKED TO EACH OTHER (I KNOW THEY CAN!!!! THEY HAVE A HEADSPACE THEY HANG OUT IN!!!!! IF MIKE WAS ONLY ABLE TO ACCESS IT BY THE COMPETITION NOW'S A GOOD TIME TO GET YOUR WORDS IN!!!!!) then it would have been a MILES better solution than. PERMANENT INTEGRATION AND CHOOSING TO CURE THEIR OWN DISORDER ALL BY THEMSELVES WITH NO HELP BY PUSHING A BUTTON IN THEIR BRAIN JUST TO GET RID OF ONE GUY THEY DIDN'T WANT TO TALK TO!!!!!!!!!!!! oh my god also i just want to mention i know svetlana was trying to be nice and encouraging saying they needed mike because he's better at some things than some of the other headmates but..... that coupling with the integration...... kind of hammers it in that everyone sees themselves as "extra" :( it makes me want to be more conscious of how i think/talk about OUR headmates because i want to try and make everyone feel welcome and valid.....
anyway sorry for the text wall i just love these guys so much but i HATE THE WRITING and i'm stalling finishing the s5 finale because i know they're going to do it and it's going to piss me off so much and i love ALL of them and want them to be ok..... it's hard for me to criticize much else because i can see us a lot in these guys and how things run.... and i'm disappointed they didn't show much else of mike& purely because i was watching the seasons just for them so everything else felt like filler.... IT WAS ENTERTAINING I JUST.... want to see more of them but WITH THE CORRECT DIAGNOSTIC NAME AND SEVERAL THERAPY TRIPS LATER LOL.....
///////
///////
edit: finished!!! SO! mal admitting he was pushing people away so they didn't have the chance to hurt them first. the others saying integration wasnt getting RID of anyone, just making them a fuller singular person. GUYS I'M SOBBING.... i KNEW mal was doing the typical persecutor song and dance but with the way he even threw around his baggage like it was NOTHING. still upset at the integration since everyone was more willing to cease existing as they were altogether just so mal wouldn't be the host.... it breaks my heart.... ALSO I'M STILL OVER THE MOON ABOUT GIVING THEM A HEADSPACE AND THE LITTLE DETAILS IN THERE!!!! i legit don't know any other media featuring systems that INCLUDED that!!!!! god y'all the end of the system era was pretty disappointing but it just made me think of the guys i'm living with. i know i wasn't a perfect host and was definitely a control freak when i first discovered i was part of them, and every day i try to make that right.... so this just reminded me of those times in awareness infancy where i was like. ok but i'm the one who fronts the most so i must be the real one!!! obviously not true anymore because julian's the host now, i mean i'm still real but knowing that logic is pretty busted... hehehe.... even realizing i was only the host for a handful of years up to that point was a shock!!! but retroactively trying to work things through with everyone and getting us to a functional place despite not being able to see a therapist about it yet... this was weirdly heartwarming in a way? seeing the headmates in their natural habitat, just chilling. seeing them get into internal conflict. dissociation periods used as windows into their mind. mike starting as insisting he was the one in control and who SHOULD be in control, even willing to abandon everyone for zoey, but going to being the least willing to integrate because he would miss everyone and valued their existence.... i know they can only fit so much development in 20 min episodes of a show thats supposed to focus on multiple people (non-systems at least) so i think their story was cramped in that aspect, but if it were a more serious non-reality show focusing more on mike& in general it would have been WAY smoother. but like. i understand the shorthand and can see the allusions and whatnot. i know what they were trying to do. and i LOVE it. it's not perfect but this is the first time i watched something in a good while that felt like it encapsulated ANYTHING close to my personal experiences being in a system and being the disgruntled host, and seeing a little bit of my closest comrades in mike's headmates was just icing on the cake. :) i think the only thing i would have liked better was if instead of an integration they either agreed to work together and be more functional/rehabilitate mal, or if someone new split entirely to act as the mediator.. idk total drama is pretty stressful!! it's the right environment for it!!! and especially the inner system conflict!!! i don't know i think after all that, they needed someone to be the impartial third party to help settle conflicts and junk... just my onion though

I want to hear your opinion on m/m vs f/f relationships in Cog! And male vs female characters in general. What I noticed about relationships is that nominally, we do have wlw prominent characters - as in, they exist and all - but the focus is never on them. And female characters' plot is often a function of male pain/angst. I did love Cordelia, though, and I thought James was more bearable than other Herondale men.
my opinion is essentially what you described: there are definitely wlw characters in the shadowhunter books, they exist, (helen blackthorn, aline penhallow, and anna lightwood), but they are never allotted the same kind of focus that the mlm characters have. the wlw characters’ internal thoughts, dialogue, and arcs take up less pages than the mlm characters’. they’re usually operating as supporting characters to the main characters’ storylines. not even like second-level supporting characters like how ty, dru, livvy, and kit were supporting characters to emma, julian, mark, and christina’s stories, where they had their own arcs that directly tied with the main cast, but didn’t nearly take up as much page time or were the emotional center of the books. but like third or fourth-level supporting characters where they showed up to fulfill one or two narrative purposes and then were never to be seen again. they might have a few pov sections within chapters here and there that allows the reader to get a small glimpse into their minds and their feelings, but they don’t have any real significant arc or as big of an impact on the story compared to both the mlm characters and presumably straight characters. yes, i’m talking about aline and helen and yes, i’ll always be bitter they didn’t show up until the end of the second book in the tda trilogy. and yes, i’ll always be bitter that when they did have any page time in qooad, they were very short. and no, i don’t think aline and helen being older authority figures aka “adults” thereby necessitating that they be sidelined so they don’t take over the stories and fix the problems of the young adults/teens is a reasonable excuse to erase them to the extent that they were.
another thing: there are simply more mlm characters than wlw characters in the shadowhunter books. this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because we always need more mlm representation. but if you compare the amount of mlm characters compared to the amount of wlw characters, there’s a clear inequality and dare i say, preference for mlm characters. and this fact makes me uncomfortable being that cassie is a woman and this clear preference is riddled with heterosexism. the first mlm relationship in the shadowhunter books was magnus and alec, right? and the first wlw relationship was aline and helen, right? okay, we have one of each, but arguably magnus and alec were more important characters in the tmi series. skipping over tid because there really were no new queer characters in that trilogy. magnus was there, but he’s not a new character. moving on to tda: we have mark, kieran, kit, and ty. four new queer characters in the shadowhunter books: all of them are mlm. again, we can’t discredit the presence of aline and helen in the tda trilogy, but let’s be real, mark, kieran, kit and ty were part of the main story and aline and helen were not. and this is where the argument of leaving aline and helen at wrangel island for most of the trilogy makes me uncomfortable. mark and helen are twins, aka they are the same age! you can’t argue that sidelining aline and helen was necessary for the narrative because of the whole ‘authority figure meddling with the kids’ stories’ issue, when mark and helen are the goddamn same age! the idea to bring back mark early on and not helen just reeks of heterosexism. you . could argue that cassie simply was more interested in mark as a character and that as a writer, she should have the creative freedom to write about what she wants. but when you deliberately create a wlw character who is the same age as her mlm brother, kindling that hope in readers’ hearts that they’re finally gonna get wlw rep, but then suddenly prop up the mlm character at the expense of the wlw character, then there’s a problem. it would have hurt less if these characters were not related and the same age, but they are.
and now lastly, the tlh trilogy. we have matthew who’s bi, alastair who’s gay, charles who’s gay, thomas who’s presumably gay, anna who’s a lesbian, and ariadne who’s presumably a lesbian as well. (cordelia gives me bi vibes, but that might just be cassie’s writing through her perspective and describing every person regardless of gender with very beautiful descriptors, who knows). we have a whole slew of new queer characters which is amazing. i’m thrilled and happy that cassie made this decision and is willing to be inclusive, more than she has before. but the ratio of mlm characters compared to wlw characters is still skewed. cassie had the chance to create more wlw characters, fix the mistake of not having as many wlw characters in her previous books, and even out the numbers a little, but instead she choose to create even more mlm characters. idk...as much as i love the mlm characters in chain of gold, like i adore alastair, thomas, and matthew, i can’t help but feel frustrated at the lack of page time for anna and ariadne. when i heard anna was gonna be part of the main supporting cast and saw that she was on the drawing of all the characters in the first edition of chain of gold, i was so excited! finally, a wlw main supporting character. i was crushed to later find out she’s actually a few years older than them, and her only big narrative impact is when she’s helping them at the hell ruelle. anna has a few pages and moments where it’s all about her and her relationship with ariadne, but it’s not enough. speaking of ariadne, of course the only other wlw character was poisoned and bedridden for most of the book! because we simply cannot have more than one wlw character in the main narrative at the same time!
this is already super long, so i’ll end my thoughts here with this: all of this erasure and sidelining of wlw characters reveals that there’s a clear preference for, and honestly...fetishization of mlm characters in cassie’s books and heteromisogyny towards wlw characters. i don’t know if it’s actually okay that cassie prefers and is more comfortable writing mlm characters, especially considering she’s presumably a straight woman. i lowkey feel like there’s an assumption that most of her fans prefer mlm characters and thus, there are more of them in her books. why do you think male characters in cassie’s books are lauded as heroes and leaders more than the female characters are? there’s an assumption that the target audience of the shadowhunter books consists of mostly straight young women, therefore the characters that get the main focus and emotional weight and struggle in her books are male characters, with the male herondales being a prime example. it’s all really frustrating.

Asra & Julian Go to a Bar (1/2)
(Decided to split it because it’s long and they’re okay on their own but idk it’s late and I’m Feeling.  This is the Silly/Fluffy half.)
They shouldn’t have been drinking.
Honestly, they should have gone their separate ways after leaving the palace; go home, go to sleep, grapple with existential dread, go back to work.
But Julian had wanted to unwind first, and there was a place he’d heard of and somehow never been to.  On a whim, he invited Asra, and on a whim, Asra agreed.
They don’t really know each other, having only worked together for a few weeks and not talked about much besides.  But, Julian reasons, a few rounds in a lively tavern are an excellent way to to bond.  Asra shoots him a smile--is it the first time he’s seen him smile?--and finds them a table near the back of the room, far enough from the band that they can speak without straining.
Conversation flows more easily with alcohol involved.  Asra selects something bright green with what looks like an eyeball floating in it, while Julian, for his part, samples just about half the menu.  Asra, sipping the strange concoction that definitely has an eyeball in it, admits to being a lightweight--but that doesn’t stop him from accepting a second, then a third drink from the beaming server, or from stealing a mouthful of Julian’s when he thinks he isn’t looking.
The face he makes, lips pressed tight and nose wrinkled, makes Julian laugh so hard he snorts.  Asra glares at him for just a moment before laughing himself.
The band strikes up a swaying beat, and Julian lets out a startled noise.
“I love this song,” he says, setting down his glass with a note of finality.  Asra raises an eyebrow as Julian stands and, with a flourish, places one booted foot on the table.  When he gets both feet planted and finds his balance, he reaches toward Asra, ever dramatic.  “Care to dance?”
Asra stares, incredulous, certain the doctor is joking.  But the gleam in his stormy eyes says otherwise, and with a shake of his head, Asra takes his hand.
“Alright.”
Julian hauls him up with ease, pulling him close (just to steady him, of course,) and then turning in a slow circle, mindful of the edge of the table.  Asra follows him, surprised at how graceful the lanky (and no doubt tipsy) man is.
“Do you do this often?” he asks.
“Go dancing with beautiful magicians?” Julian replies carelessly, spinning Asra away then gently drawing him back.  “Would you believe you’re the first?”
“I meant dance on tables,” Asra retorts.
“Only when the mood is right.”
The song ends and a few people clap as Julian steps off the table and helps Asra down.
“Thank you, by the way,” Julian murmurs against the side of his head.  He’s far too close--Asra can smell his aftershave, the alcohol on his breath, and hear his steady heartbeat--but he doesn’t move away, choosing instead to enjoy the closeness of their bodies and the unusual softness of the doctor’s voice.  “Not that I mind being a solo act, but there’s something special about performing with a partner.”
Asra smirks, and Julian matches him.
“Two drunks on a table is hardly a performance.”
“On the contrary,” Julian says, “I think that sounds like the next big stage show.”  He leans close, chin on Asra’s shoulder, extending a hand as if to paint the scene.  “Two Drunks on a Table, the story of a pair of hapless friends on a quest to find joy in dark times.”
Asra looks up at him, suddenly serious.
“Are we friends, Ilya?”
Julian hesitates.
“Dear Asra,” he says, “Two Drunks on a Table is, of course, fiction, and any resemblance to a real plague-ridden city is merely coincidence.”  When Asra continues to stare, Julian clears his throat.  “How--how about another drink?”

Would you ever do a fan route for Lucio? Like what would the plot be from beginning to end?
Would I? No, probably not. But I can definitely tell you what I would want to happen! It’s honestly fairly boring because I’m just a big fan of exploring characters vs having an intricate plot. It is a dating sim, though, so you’d think that character development would be the priority but alas....
We know that I am a big fan of slow burns, and it’s kind of baffling that the Arcana isn’t more of a slow burn because it has the perfect mechanics for it (as the game is set up a lot more like a regular novel than other dating sims I’ve played). So Lucio’s route would be a slow burn. But he’s constantly horny on main, how would that work? Simple: we have him stay stuck in his goat form for a while, to get to know him and not just rely on something superficial like his looks to drive our attraction to him.
We start out fairly similar to his actual route, with MC sneaking into his wing to try and find clues, but running into Lucio’s ghost. Unlike the first two times they’ve been up there, they don’t run away this time. Instead, they approach him, asking him if he is the late Count. Of course, he responds very dramatically, woe is me-esque, but MC also understands that he kinda deserves to be dramatic. Because he was left alone in the remains of his body for 3 years.
But soon MC has to leave, but they promise to keep visiting Lucio, both to get to the bottom of the mystery/help him out of the situation he got himself into, as well as because they’re simply curious.
Occasionally they sneak out and bother people around the palace, but Lucio can only be away from his wing for so long. But MC is beginning to genuinely enjoy his company, so is there really a problem here? Other people are starting to notice how they disappear for hours on end, but MC always just chalks it up to “solving the case”.
Maybe, eventually, MC starts to develop feelings for Lucio. Because while he has moments of narcissism, he also has moments where he is sweet and funny. Not at all the tyrant others describe him as.
MC finds a spell while helping Asra out in the shop one day, a spell that seems like it could help Lucio out. Maybe not permanently, but at least for a while until they can find a way to get him his body back. As soon as they can, MC brings the spell to Lucio and is like “GET THIS”. It’s basically the spell from the game.
Yay! Lucio has a kind-of-body again! And he takes this opportunity to really amp up his flirting (not that he wasn’t before, but it is very hard to take flirting from a goat seriously). ~oh worm~~whatever shall happen now~
More sneaking around but now Lucio keeps making flirtatious jokes.
Oh, also, of course Julian’s innocence is proved. MC doesn’t want to reveal how they know, mainly for selfish reasons (if they reveal that Lucio is still sticking around, that creates a whole new slew of problems). It would probably be best to go about the same route that his innocence is proved in Julian’s route because I legitimately don’t remember how it’s proved in everyone else’s route. Which means less screen time for Lucio, which is a bummer, but he doesn’t need to be there 24/7.
So the masquerade rolls around, and Lucio has started acting... off.
Meaning he’s been acting very guilty and flighty, barely making any jokes or even asking for praise. Which worries MC, but when they press him about it, he simply shuts down and refuses to talk. So they chalk it up to him not wanting to deal with the memory of the night he died, which is a pretty good reason if you ask me.
But then the Devil shows up, and a deal is struck up- a deal that seems beneficial to both parties. But MC is a dumbass and doesn’t realize that they may be being tricked.
An end to the plague in return for Lucio getting his body back? Sure, why not!
But ooh... wait. MC’s body is the same as Lucio’s body. A fact neither of them realized and just thought they had an awesome connection from the get-go. Idiots.
Asra finds a way to contact MC and essentially does a “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE” and gives them a run-down of what exactly Lucio has done, as well as the whole “hey you were dead”
So MC is not. happy. with Lucio. And confronts him about it, feeling betrayed.
And for a moment, it seems that he doesn’t care. But then something clicks, and he actually feels regret for his actions, for hurting someone he lov- cares about deeply.
So he promises to help MC get their body back, and then ignores the other feelings he has because Who Has The Time To Deal With Love?
So now we enter the magical realms. Lucio, MC, and Asra because we love third wheels.
Right before they enter the Devil’s realm, Lucio turns to MC and just kinda goes “hey...Iloveyouokayletsgodothis”
And MC is like “despite everything that’s going on and what he’s done, I can’t not make out with him”
And Asra goes “-_-  can we please get this over with”
But when they’ve confronted the Devil, Lucio’s chains are all made visible, and MC has a “oh shit what do I do he’s in pain what do I-” And makes a grab for the chains, which buckle under their touch. Realizing that they have the power to actually fix this problem, they attempt to break all the chains, but are stopped by the Devil before anything substantial can actually happen.
So instead, Lucio has to face his fear and break the goddamn chains himself through standing up to the Devil and like... growing as a person or whatever. It’s cheesy but what do you expect from me here.
Upright Ending: The chains actually break and MC and Lucio (...and Asra, I guess lmao) fight against the Devil. Lucio probably brings out a cool sword because I, personally, love swords and he’s good at that kind of stuff. MC uses ~magic weapons~ on the offense/magic shields on the defense. The Devil isn’t permanently defeated, because he’s the Devil, but is sedated long enough that they can escape. It’s not a perfect ending, and Lucio does still have to deal with the consequences of making deals and not fulfilling his end, but they’re learning how to be happy. Maybe Lucio abdicates his throne in favor of someone else (maybe even starting a democracy idk it seems like the system of governing they have isn’t working lmao), maybe he just decides to be a better ruler, i dunno.
Reversed Ending: The chains don’t break. Lucio is stuck at the Devil’s mercy and MC, at last minute, runs forward. “I want to make a deal.” MC makes a deal for Lucio’s safety, maybe offering to take on Lucio’s debts so that he can be free, maybe offering to be stuck in the Devil’s realm for a while (No This Will Not Lead To Romantic Entanglements But It Is Very Persephone-Hades blah blah blah). I like the former idea more, because then MC has to deal with the consequences of Lucio’s actions, and he doesn’t grow as a person.
Yeah, I guess that’s what I’d want to happen.

February 22nd-February 28th, 2020 Creator Babble Archive
The archive for the Creator Babble chat that occurred from February 22nd, 2020 to February 28th, 2020.  The chat focused on the following question:
How do you deal with people shipping non-canon ships for your story?
Deo101 [Millennium]
To be completely honest, I've only had one person ever ship a non canon/endgame thing. I kinda just ignored it. I think I would in general just ignore it, no matter how many people did ship a non canon thing. But it does make me uncomfortable
carcarchu
I once had a professor tell me "once you release your story to the world it no longer belongs to you" and i think he was right. once your story is shared with others it can no longer be said to be solely your creation anymore. you can't stop other people from shipping non-canon ships and even if you want to discourage it it's kind of beyond your hands at that point. other people's interpretations of your work is something you have to accept as a creator even if you find it unsavoury
Tuyetnhi
this is always in the back of my mind so uh, I let folks be and try not to search up fandom pics of my comic. at the US at least, I remember reading that creators who are currently writing/creating a story and it's not up to completion, anything like viewing fanart or reading fanfiction of alternative interpretations is not advised. So you have to stow it away till the story is thoroughly done, then you can just check out what fans are doing rip. I think it's aimed towards creators who have like NDA thing they're working on or if they're working with a publisher. still, I thought that's an important thing to keep in mind.
though I do get folks send me like single character fanart and really doesn't interfer with the story anyway so I accept those lmao
carcarchu
@Tuyetnhi that's for creators to not get sued for having their story turn out similar to people's fanfics
Tuyetnhi
aahhh :0
still er lmao. if the possibility is there, I rather not uh.... seek it lmao
especially like shipping fanfiction of my characters when the story isn't over yet lmao
eli [a winged tale]
I totally agree carcarchu. Readers can interpret character interactions through their own lenses and sometimes what we as creators intend in the story may be seen as a potential ship to varying degrees. I actually just had a conversation about this within my beta circle where a friend who hasn’t seen the whole script shipped a non canon pair and it was interesting! I personally don’t feel disturbed by it unless the pair had a large age difference/can potentially be unhealthy etc. There is a threshold I won’t cross but that tends to be quite high. Otherwise I just think it’s interesting and continue the actual story
Eilidh (Lady Changeling)
I haven't come across this with mine yet, but given that my story is deliberately non-romantic and the whole cast is aroace, I wouldn't be comfortable with anyone shipping any characters romantically. But that's very specific to my comic.
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
To me, there are four levels of "non-canon" with regards to shipping. 1. You were supposed to ship this and get disappointed, so good job. The obvious example is the Mizuki-Cahe-Pejiba love triangle. Mizuki x Pejiba doesn't work out in the end, but it's not like it was a non-viable ship - if Mizuki x Pejiba wasn't compelling at all, it wouldn't have been much of a love triangle, now would it? 2. Didn't think of it myself, but I get the dynamic you're going for. One surprisingly common ship in the shipping contest poll was Taci x Coruby, which isn't a ship I was deliberately teasing... but, like, I get it? Coruby is outgoing, loyal, and makes lots of dad jokes. Taci is prickly, self-absorbed, backstabbing, and was (is? probably is) literally afraid of dad jokes. I can definitely see why people would want to see more of that dynamic. 3. ...Why? An example of this is Zaxaty x Mr. Enetoro, which showed up in the poll. Even ignoring the bad age gap (22 vs 50 which is like... all right... she's half your age but ok...) and the sexuality incompatibility (Zaxaty's only into women, Enetoro's not into anyone)... these two have literally never spoken to each other either on or off screen. Literally what drew you to this pairing??? Like I'd almost believe it was a mis-click on the poll over anyone actually thinking these two work together. 4. Bad, bad, very very bad. AKA "they're related", "one's underage", and/or "i know exactly why you want this ship, and I don't like it". For a while during the shipping poll's running, the third place ship was Mizuki x Nothing. First off, the age gap there is pretty gross, but I guess I can't expect readers to know that (Nothing is an immortal demon, but relative to other demons it's a kid so... someone's underage there). And second... I know exactly why people were shipping Mizuki with the giant demon that uses tendrils to mind control people, and I do not like that dynamic.
As for what I do about the ships in #3 or #4... so far, nothing, because they've been contained to the poll. If someone drew actual art of them, though, I'd probably tell them to stop, and I for sure wouldn't post the art on my fan-art page.
kayotics
I don’t have a very present fandom, at least in the sense that there’s any amount of shipping that’s unexpected. Or maybe it’s tucked away? I think the people who read my comic aren’t ones who make their own content. Either way, I’m pretty ok with shipping non-canon ships. I’d encourage it, really. I love the idea of people having fun with my characters in a way I didn’t expect. As for ships that are taboo... as long as they’re not hurting real people, I just don’t want to see it really or be made to be part of it. It would make me uncomfortable.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, how pushy/not pushy they are with Weird Ships is a big factor for me as well.
As long as they keep it to themselves, they can ship all the ships they want, no matter how icky. I'd prefer to not know if it's really icky.
So far there is only one Potentially Viable ship in my comic, though. And that Viable ship is very, very important to me. So if anyone ships one of the involved characters with someone else, I would seriously hope it's not because I've failed to develop the Viable Ship in a compelling manner. People are free to ship whoever, but don't let that be because of my own failure as a storyteller?
I've actually had anti-shippers against that Viable ship though lol, which may be relevant to the topic. What do you do when you get vocal anti-shippers of canon ships
I do think it is related, like another variation of "people sticking to their own thing with regards to ships."
kayotics
As a shipper: any crack ships I come up with is usually just because I like to explore the dynamic. Some people are more extreme about hating ships but... idk it’s probably just because they don’t like one of the characters for some reason
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Believable crackships can be a lot of fun to observe, as a non-shipper. Like I look at this amazingly well-written crackship and I'm like, wow, this is sorcery
sagaholmgaard
I haven't had it happen yet (my comic is less than a year old and doesn't have a lot of followers haha) But I'm really open about shipping! Much like @kayotics I would probably encourage it. I'm personally aroace and in my original writing I like to explore non-romantic relationships, but I know the appeal of shipping and tbh i ship my own ocs that aren't canon to the story/don't get explored in the comic because they're background characters for whatever reason. It would be genuinely fun to see if other people started exploring those ships on their own! Or things I haven't thought about! If something made me really uncomfortable, I would likely ignore it. If someone tried to get their non-canon ship to become canon that would be worse, no matter if i personally liked the ship or not, lol.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, people need to respect boundaries, always
kayotics
Yeah, definitely. It wouldn’t make me uncomfortable unless someone was trying to break into my personal boundaries
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
It doesn’t happen so much currently with Phantomarine, because I just don’t have enough shippable characters yet (related, underage, or otherwise just kinda squicky). I wonder what will happen when I introduce more. But as long as people are interacting with my characters in a fun healthy way, but still respect my choices in the end, they can ship away in any (legal) direction. It’s honestly not a ship-heavy story. It’s far more about friendship and healing and rebuilding strength/trust after trauma - if any shipping were to happen, it would probably be in a sequel or continuation when everyone is... feeling a lot better
DanitheCarutor
Depends on the characters. 90% of the time I don't care, I may even make jokes. There's nothing wrong with people wanting to see my hideous characters getting together, although there are two things that would make me a little salty. 1. If there is a scene going on that I want readers to take seriously. Such as if there is a part in the story where someone is overwhelmed and having a mental break down, then another character comes over to help calm them down. It would be kinda rude to get a bunch of comments screaming "KISS THEM!", "KISS NOW!" Although that could just be me being a stick in the mud. 2. Anything involving Julian. They are currently not mentally stable enough to properly consent to any romantic endeavors, so when people try to ship other characters with them it's a little... eeeeh! Kinda non-con, and it feels a little gross. I try not to get on anyones ass about these, realizing no one means any harm, they may not even be full aware of the situation. (Especially with Julian since they're still functional enough to talk to people sometimes and hold down a job.) Normally I leave the comments be, they just kinda irk me sometimes.
em.rowene
Honestly, I think I'd be flattered to see more fan interaction with Fractured Magic. Even if it's a ship I don't really get, it would just be nice to know people are engaged with the story and like my characters enough to interact with them beyond just reading (though this answer's definitely coming from a place of having been publishing it only half a year and not having a huge readerbase yet) Someone making fanfic with my characters is actually a major goal of my writing, but I agree with the above people who said reading it before the story's done probably isn't a good idea. I don't think there's much legal risk to it (I actually wrote a major paper on this in law school) - there's only been one case even remotely analogous in the US. Someone wrote a Rocky fan script and sent it to the writers, and then the next Rocky movie had a similar plot and the person sued. The judge said if you make a derivative work (like fanfic), you can't sue the creators of the original copyright for infringement. But I do think it would be bad form bc it is really easy to be influenced by stuff like fanfiction of your own story, even if you don't mean to be
Mei
Thankfully I haven't had to deal with people shipping my characters from MHIAC with anybody else. But that's mostly because I've only actually introduced the two main characters, who are husbands, and one friend. I think it'd be super interesting to see how people view the character relationships once I introduce more of the cast. I'd be really curious too! I mean, I don't want people to try and break up the canon couple that's for sure... but I guess all the side characters are fair game for shipping if people choose to. I'd honestly be super flattered if people shipped any of my characters, it would feel like I'm doing something right. As long as there's no NSFW stuff because boy that'd make me uncomfortable.
chalcara
Shipping‘s fan stuff and just for fan, as long as you do it in your own space, go hog-wild. Have fun! Not gonna watch/read/view it, but have fun! People taking their headcanons as fact for the main-comic might end up a problem, but I‘ll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
So far, I've only had people ship the canon main couple, so I haven't had problems yet. But honestly, I don't care who the readers ship for the most part, unless it's gross and/or illegal. For example, if they are related or underage... Other than that, I don't mind. It's all in good fun
Deo101 [Millennium]
I actually wanna add on to my comment: non canon ships only make me uncomfortable if they go against the Characters sexuality, or if it's an abusive ship or illegal. If it's not one of those then it doesn't bother me! My Characters are generally friends so I totally get someone wanting to ship two who won't be endgame
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I dunno. I just can't be bothered by stuff like that for multiple reasons. 1) Most of my characters don't talk about their sexuality in the comic. 2) Because of setting and time period, everyone expects everyone to be straight (which of course isn't true). 3) And I don't think readers typically mean anything bad by shipping people with each other that won't be together (again, unless it's gross or illegal).
One of my characters, for example, is aroace, but he doesn't even know that's a thing, because sexuality and mental health is not understood in this time period. So of course he hasn't mentioned that he's aroace at all. He is married to a woman, because of societal expectations, so likely he will be shipped with her. But their relationship is horrible, and it was definitely a marriage of convenience. So if readers decide to ship him with other people, I can't fault them, because they simply do not know.
Him being aroace is only in the subtext and in my heart.
Deo101 [Millennium]
I make my Characters sexualities pretty clear, so I consider it akin to homophobia to want to see my gay man with a lesbian
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
In your case, it's definitely a bit different, because you have made it obvious.
Capitania do Azar
Too bad @Deo101 [Millennium] i am preparing problematic ships right now (no I'm not)
I don't care about what people would ship, and I would be curious as to why people think this or that pair could work it's a very interesting way to see how people are interpreting the story and the characters
Deo101 [Millennium]
LMAO
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I'm definitely scared of people shipping incestual relations in my comic, because there is a situation where characters are related, but it isn't known to the audience (yet)
And I really don't want that mistake to be made
Deo101 [Millennium]
Lia/luke shippers before the last star wars movie came out...
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Yep
I'm like... soooo nervous right now
I can just feel the bad ships encroaching
Capitania do Azar
If people don't know can you blame them?
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I think it's only bad if the ships persist after it's revealed
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I can't blame them, but I just don't want to think about it
sagaholmgaard
ack, good luck cronaj! I wanted to add that when it comes to shipping and canon sexualities i'm the same boat as you cronaj. I have my own idea that my main characters are pan and ace respectively, but it doesn't come up in the comic and they don't have the lingo for it during this time period, so I can't blame readers for making up their own headcanons and ships
I have comic ideas that are a lot more centered around sexuality and getting into a relationship. If i ever make them happen I'm sure I would mind a lot more it people's ships went against the characters' canon sexualities
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Lol, haha, I also have a pan character whose sexuality isn't revealed in comic XD
Like... A little bit of subtext, but not explicitly said
FeatheryJustice
I actually don't mind people shipping things in my comic that is non canon, because it just proves people read my comics. I myself love crack pairings and dumb things, so I treat their ships like crack pairings. I think an example in Teasday was someone joking about shipping Vander with Spyder, two characters who never met and I was like "Haha that's funny." Because it just proves they read my comic to even know the names at least.
Capitania do Azar
They never met but... If they did
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
I've had more readers want to date the characters themselves then ship them with another character, so it's hard to have a solid thought on how I'd feel with ships so far That being said however, i don't really mind ppl shipping as long as it's respectful to me and the readers boundaries. There's been people honestly wanting more interactions between characters that aren't shippable in my eyes, so i most likely would advert them if i saw ships i didn't agree with. That said, go wild!
Kat - The Yuri Canon
I get a lot of non-canon shipping, mostly because there are so many possibilities. Mostly I allow it, as long as they don't get too extreme or overly sexualize my characters. But I did have to stop some when they kept insisting my Ace go out with one of my characters. I finally had to say it just wasn't happening.
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
Its never happened to me, but if it did that would be fine I guess. I’m not about to change plans in how I write the story to spontaneously put characters together unless there was good chemistry maybe
I would be happy overall that people were engaging with my characters on that level
Cap’n Lee (Flowerlark Studios)
I have only had one single ship comment in the 14 years I’ve been doing webcomics, and it was over a decade ago. But it was also an intensely uncomfortable one, where a reader was trying to ship my 14yo gay character with an adult female villain. Needless to say I put the brakes on that right away, and have never had a ship comment since.
But secretly I wish readers did occasionally ship my adult characters, because so long as they don’t get toxic, I think non canon shipping can be fun. If the reader doesn’t demand their ship be made canon or fight with people shipping a different pairing, I’d be all for it.
Ash🦀
Honestly I would love to see ships. I've never really had an audience for Foxes with Machine Guns, so seeing people care that much? I think I'd just be grateful. TBH I cried when I got a comment so someone having a whole ship? Of My OCs?? I'd probably end up sobbing like an idiot. They're all adults, ship away, you have my blessing.
Nutty (Court of Roses)
I personally love shipping, and in regards to my comic, I'm excited, but also nervous. I have a main ship that I push myself that so far a lot of readers have been really receptive to (Merlow/Nocturne <3). I also have a few more ships coming up... but in the meantime, I like to see theories, but I worry that either a) the ships I end up with will make folks unhappy, or b) folks will ship things that ignore a character's established orientation. Like, it's fairly clear Diana is a lesbian, but I already had a casual suggestion from a rl reader of her and Merlow getting together and I'm like. N no. No please. Please, just let them be besties, they will be best friends I promise but Merlow is not a lady.(edited)
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
See, I don't care about people having ~gross~ ships. I might not want to hear about it -- and if you expect it to become canon, you're probably out of luck -- but if a reader enjoys imagining or exploring it on their own time? I'm not gonna police them over that.
Just because a thing is illegal to do IRL, that doesn't mean it's illegal to imagine it or write about it. (If it was, I'd be in a whole lot of trouble...)
...not that it's really come up, since with my comics it seems like most people are happy to go with the canon mostly-healthy ships anyway, but.
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Same with shipping against orientation -- if some reader wants to imagine an AU where the character realizes they've been bi the whole time after all, why not? The canon representation you wrote is still there. It's not gonna be compromised or erased unless you write that happening.
(And if the reader's imagination is more like "everyone is actually straight and some people, including these characters, just get temporarily confused"...I mean, at that point they have waaaay bigger problems than which webcomic characters they like to imagine kissing.)
kayotics
I think I gotta agree with Erin here. I’m not gonna police what people want to imagine. It’s not my business. They can do what they like in their free time.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I assume most of "I don't want X" folks mean "I don't want to see X." I can't even imagine policing what people do in their own time! I mean, what are you gonna do, be like the NYC library parking sign?
(That sign is real and I have seen it)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
"I don't want to see X" is definitely true for me
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Yeah, any time someone's clear that they mean "I don't want to see X" or "I don't want readers telling me about X", that's a different story!
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
And if said illegal/gross ships are perpetuated on the internet, I'll probably try to step in
ESPECIALLY WITH UNDERAGE CHARACTERS
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
...see, that's getting back into "policing what random people do with their free time" territory.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I WILL FIGHT YOU
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
um, there's a difference between things you do on your free time, and things you post where children can see
it's an important distinction
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I specifically have one character who is a small child who I do not want to see in ANY romantic situations
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
I mean, we don't have psychic filters on "check this box to confirm that you are over 18" filters, so in theory "children can see" just about anywhere...
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
unless, of course, the character is aged up significantly
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
And cute ships with young characters having crushes on each other have been around since forever.
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
oh young characters having crushes on each other is one thing
but there are far worse things on the internet
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Yes
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Right, but we're talking about "shipping" as a general thing, which includes the cute crushes.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I don't want any weird pedo crap
keep that aaaaawaaaaay from my characters thank you
Deo101 [Millennium]
on the subject of what people do in their free time, it's pretty obvious that I can't control what people are doing but that doesnt mean I support any free time activities.
I
I'm not gonna say I'm okay with adults shipping adults and children even if they do it where no one can see
like they CAN and I can't stop them but I wont say i'm okay with it just because I can't control it
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Sure, but, we're not talking about any "free time activities" -- we're talking about people using their imaginations. That doesn't cause me any harm. And if nobody ever sees it? Geez, plenty of people have waaaay darker thoughts than that in the privacy of their own heads.
Deo101 [Millennium]
I think it causes harm to how they interact with the world, though. and just because it could be worse doesnt mean it's okay
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
If they are interacting with the world in a specific harmful way, that would be a thing we can discuss on its own merits!
FeatheryJustice
I feel like if you police people from not doing something, they want to do it more.
So by not drawing attention to it, it might be a better move? For Ships, if someone ships something you don't like, don't draw attention to it kinda thing?
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Also true!
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I think "I won't say I'm okay with it" and "I will actively make an effort to police it" are two very different things?
You can definitely have this... area where the distinction isn't clear
FeatheryJustice
For example, if someone is like "Don't draw this character as X because I don't like it" People might do it because you said something?
People are weird, I wish they will listen to author wises but not everyone will.
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
I mean, yeah, but "I won't make an effort to police it because that would be physically impractical" is also different from "I won't make an effort to police it because that's not my job."
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Well, if they do that, then they are an asshole(edited)
because they aren't respecting the creator's barriers
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
@FeatheryJustice Not spreading ideas you don't like in the first place is a smart move, yeah. Put your energy into promoting and spreading the things that make you happy.
FeatheryJustice
Yeah! Promoting things that make you happy might be better. Like "I like the fact you guys enjoy drawing my characters" Something like that that's more positive
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Sure, they can do it, but if you do something like that, which is also illegal in most countries, then you are disrespecting the creator, the character(s), and the law
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Wait, what are people doing that's illegal?
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past) Today at 11:19 PM And if said illegal/gross ships are perpetuated on the internet, I'll probably try to step in ESPECIALLY WITH UNDERAGE CHARACTERS
FeatheryJustice
Oh yeah that's something different. That's just illegal.
RebelVampire
I'm just admin stepping in here to remind people to remain respectful. Cause this is the sort of conversation that can quickly go out of hand.
FeatheryJustice
Got it Rebel
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Doing bad things is illegal. Writing about bad things happening isn't illegal. (Again: I have written fiction about soooo many illegal-to-actually-do things.)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I think there is a difference between writing about a terrible thing happening and putting it in a negative light and shipping pedophilia(edited)
Deo101 [Millennium]
I think writing about underage characters with the intent for sexual pleasure counts as CP
FeatheryJustice
I mean drawing and writing about murder is okay, actual going out and murdering someone is not okay. But I think for this context we are looking at something that is a bit more worrying.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
But I wouldn't want to read a story where murdering for pleasure is glorifed either
FeatheryJustice
Yeah, that's why I think context matters.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
and I frankly think media like that shouldn't be shared with the world
Like, i guess write it and stash it away on your computer somewhere
but don't show it to people
Tuyetnhi
i can hear the police sirens blaring from the sound of someone writing cp lmao
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Lol
FeatheryJustice
Back to talking about shipping (Sorry I got this conversation derailed here), I think there will be people who will never announce their ships as well.
Or have it so open ended no one knows what's what.
And maybe we can brainstorm good ways to tell people we would like them to not ship certain things?
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Probably don't say anything unless it does become a visible problem
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
...I get that nobody wants to go into this too closely, and I sure don't either, but I also think someone should say -- legally speaking, a work is only CP if a child is harmed in its creation. If there's a living, human victim. Conflating that with other things is not beneficial to anyone, and can itself be hurtful to survivors.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Honestly, I don't feel the need to warn people not to write inappropriate ships about my underage characters, because it should be common sense not to do such a thing
I really won't say anything about it unless someone actually posts it on the internet
Tuyetnhi
rip I hate to burst it but under us law, even drawn cp is considered illegal
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
^
I think it depends on the country
but in some countries, yes, it is considered CP
RebelVampire
But see that brings in the complecation of international law. If an artist is in the US but the fanartist is in say Japan where they have a much different relationship, whose laws apply?
Tuyetnhi
it depends on the site host i think?
like if it's a US based site
and there's CP there, it's under US law correct?
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
the fanartist can't be be punished if they live in a country like Japan where that's legal, but I would still try to contact them and ask that they take it down(edited)
FeatheryJustice
(I wasn't talking about CP in my post I was just like if you don't want these two characters to be shipped together what can you say? Didn't mean to spiral off like that sorry)
RebelVampire
But it might only apply to US citizens. For example, some sites specifically alter themselves so part of their site follows European GDPR laws but tell the americans they suck
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
But that is also the difference between law and site terms
the person might get banned from the site but not sued
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
I can't speak for every country, but it's genuinely not illegal in the US -- and, yeah, I don't know why a general discussion about shipping had to go this far either! You don't need to go right to the most disturbing possible interpretation when thinking about hypothetical shippers...
RebelVampire
Yeah. All my point is is blanket saying its illegal just cause it is in the US is inaccurate.
Deo101 [Millennium]
also morals =/= law, and a site is allowed to say no to that even if it is legal
they are not owed a platform
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Individual site TOS can be stricter than national laws, yeah.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
@Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn) I think the reason people discuss the worst case scenarios is because those scenarios are precisely what they have issues with, as opposed to other kinds of non-canon ships
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
@Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn) In my case, I mentioned it because that's where I draw the line with shipping. Other stuff, no matter how much I disagree with it, I don't really care enough to do anything about it
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
I get that people have those lines in their heads, but when you don't describe the distinction, when you talk about "shipping" as if "everyone should understand that I exclusively means graphic photorealistic sexual content"...that's a big leap to make!
Tuyetnhi
@Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn) agreed but er.... I still do believe that the US has a law about drawn CP being illegal. it's something that I found out when I had to help a friend out from a situation (I won't go to details rip)
but yeah it's a big assumption lmao
I know shippers in good faith won't try to push that onto others
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
And it seems unfairly harsh on any shipper with literally any other interests or activities.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Honestly, even if someone only commented about a ship with an adult character with a child character, I would still ask them kindly to delete their comment, or delete it myself
Tuyetnhi
^ye
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
It doesn't have to be a visual representation for me
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
And when you're talking about your own website, I think setting rules like that is completely reasonable.
Deo101 [Millennium]
again, I wont say im okay with it even if it's only in someones head. Just cause theyre not sharing it doesnt mean I'm okay with it
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
If I have the power to remove their comment or report them, I would
but if I don't, I will ask them to refrain from such comments
That's all the power I have
And as @Deo101 [Millennium] said, I also don't have to agree with people's filthy thoughts
Deo101 [Millennium]
I understand they can think them and i cant do anything about it but i wont offer support for it i dont think
RebelVampire
As a reader, I want to second that it's important to distinguish what you mean when you say you don't tolerate specific ships. Obviously, no one think pedophilia is okay and that would be a fine ship to not tolerate. However, if all you say is you don't tolerate specific ships, readers will also jump to the worst conclusion possible, which in this context is you don't tolerate anything that is non-canon (vs. what creators think is the worst possible conclusion when they hear non-canon).
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
see, this sort of thing is exactly why i have four tiers of "non-canon"
Deo101 [Millennium]
please elaborate!
Tuyetnhi
4 tiers? :0
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Oh yes, definitely
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
i mean it's in my post a few days back To me, there are four levels of "non-canon" with regards to shipping. 1. You were supposed to ship this and get disappointed, so good job. 2. Didn't think of it myself, but I get the dynamic you're going for. 3. ...Why? 4. Bad, bad, very very bad.
with more detail explaining specific ships that ended up in my poll that fit into each category(edited)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Even if stuff is noncanon, or goes against a character's canon sexuality, I don't really care, because fan AUs exist
and it's pretty hard to offend me
mostly the pedophilia thing is the only thing I'm passionately against
So yeah, #4 is the only place where my hair stands on end
Deo101 [Millennium]
oh sorry I did read that but I didnt realize thats what you meant by the tiers ^^;
Tuyetnhi
its helpful!
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
It is indeed
I read it before, and I still find it useful
I'm sure #1 and #2 is where most of the WotP shippers will reside
And there will definitely be a few #3s
FeatheryJustice
That's very useful, the tiers XD
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
@RebelVampire absurdly late, I know, I just wanted to second that "obviously, no one thinks pedophilia is okay" is really important to keep in mind. No matter what anyone says about any kind of shipping -- people should be able to feel comfortable that nobody's gearing up to call that into question. We're all on the same side with that one.
spacerocketbunny
There's a few characters I'm a little protective over regarding their sexuality, but most of the characters are bi/pan so it's pretty free game! I'm so here for random crack ships honestly
Capitania do Azar
Get ready
AntiBunny
Personally I enjoy seeing what random ideas fans come up with. It's all part of being a creator.
meek
lmao i'll try to get one comment in before the discussion closes As a creator, a lot of my feelings about shipping is related to how I am as a reader/audience member for media? Character dynamics and relationships are one of my favorite things + what'll usually hook me for a series, and definitely exploring relationships that either didn't receive any attention or were completely non-existent in the original material is one of my favorite things to do! And that'll inspire me to create or make certain choices with my original characters based on that "Well, what if [this] happened in that story?" So with that, I don't find myself get super-attached to canon/endgame ships and I'll just do my own thing, regardless. I always respect the original intent when it comes to character's sexuality or preference (unless it's a case of 'everyone's straight' lol), but I'm a rabid multishipper in fandom anyways so I'll carry that energy over to my own works LOL And let it be free for all, even if I have an 'end' goal in mind. After all, I'm the biggest multishipper for my own characters too!
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
>I always respect the original intent when it comes to character's sexuality or preference (unless it's a case of 'everyone's straight' lol) @meek Just for the sake of argument, why do you respect the characters' sexualities unless everyone is straight? Personally, I don't mind sexuality swapping in fan ships and such, but I do wonder why there is this specific stipulation for you.
meek
Also input as a reader: sometimes it's good to be completely upfront about where your boundaries are as a creator! And also being explicit about certain character details or relationships can help, because a lot of times readers don't.. really know.. I can't tell you the number of times I've started reading a comic where the ages of the characters are very ambiguous with: - specific ages are never said - the art style is stylized in a way that unless they're explicitly a child or an elderly person, everyone looks like they're the same age - the context clues on their age is limited to.. they worked a minimum wage job - in-story they are treated with the same level of respect and authority status as everyone else around them - characters that are older than them that act the same age and that's led me several times to thinking a character was at least 18-23+ and actually they were supposed to be 14.....
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I assume it's for the same vein of reason why we don't have a Straight Pride Day. This is getting into the weeds though, so I'm very hesitant to approach further
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Sure
meek
The short answer is that there's no harm in adding more gay or trans representation to a work of fiction
but erasing canon gay or trans representation to make it cis or straight is bad and homo/transphobic
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I mean, I don't think there's anything wrong with respecting characters's sexualities or messing around with possibilities, but it just seems rather... odd
meek
also just straight up it's complete white-washed fiction that LGBT or POC did not exist in history until [convenient time here] so acting like you're being "historically accurate" by exempting them is just.. bad
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Well, depending on location, that would be incorrect
But again, I'm not particularly upset to see "straight" characters depicted as gay(edited)
meek
well i'm a queer nb person so i've encountered innumerable works of fiction where everyone is straight, cis, and white so i'd much rather diversify that then perpetuate it
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
You're not wrong about there being a numerous amount of straight, cis, and yes, white characters in media
But I feel like it's destructive to society as a whole to suddenly decide to be more courteous toward LGBTQ+ groups than toward straight people
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
This is getting too political for me and I feel it could get out of control quickly
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Maybe it is political
You don't have to participate
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
It also feels off topic
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
But I think it's important to politely discuss it
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Maybe not in this channel specifically
meek
i'm going to be honest, i feel incredibly uncomfortable to be asked to continue this conversation
if you want to talk more, then write a DM but this has nothing to do with the main part of my comment or the topic for this channel
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
If you feel uncomfortable, then I respect your decision not to continue this discussion
I've said my piece
Spring-heeled Jack
Jumping in before this closes: I'm not there yet but I'm in the camp of "whatever floats your boat!" If someone ships my characters I think I'll be flattered that they are that invested in them to have those feelings. But also I'm super new to this and the only comment so far is my friend jokingly saying she ships herself with one character.
Ash🦀
I'm in the same boat as Spring-heeled Jack- the idea that people would even be invested enough would be flattering, yes. It would be really cool, but I doubt it will happen since there's a limited cast and it's not a romance. I do have personal ships, but since romance isn't a factor, shippers... Just won't be canon, kinda no matter what they ship. Maybe if my story was more romance-centered I'd care more, but as it is... Do what you want, it's not going to hurt my feelings if you think Ren and the Oni would be a power couple or whatever.
kayotics
I’m just gonna pop in here and say this: shippers making queer content of (presumably) straight characters is a large part of how I figured out I was queer, because for the most part (especially when I was younger) that doesn’t exist in the public eye.
Spring-heeled Jack
My comic isn't romance based, it's horror but I feel that really good horror is best built off characters you can connect to. So I have some families. I have some married couples. The older two "children" (they are in their 20s) are dating. I made one of my main non-binary and their partner is ace. Another main is a transman. In my heart my characters are all pan anyway so I like just putting them with who I think works best lol
I also low key ship one of my married characters with another character that is coming in later. I do enjoy shipping so I might be biased lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
my comic is pretty romance based, it's not a romance but there are pretty strong romance threads in it, and my characters arent all pan so I feel differently, so I do see why you would feel differently than me on this subject!
Spring-heeled Jack
I can also respect a creator having an idea for a character and not feeling comfy with people going different directions with it.
Ash🦀
Oh definitely- How individuals interact and feel for their characters varies from person to person.
Kabocha
I don't mind people making changes for shipping purposes or shipping non canon stuff -- so long as they don't expect me to change my writing to suit them. And like Snuffysam, I kind of have similar tiers for ships, too. I don't want to (and can't, really) control what other people do, but I'd prefer that if a reader knows it's going to make me upset or something I've expressed wishes against, that they not share it with me. Besides, if what I'm writing doesn't meet their needs, I'd rather see shippers search out, celebrate, and elevate work that better matches the values they idealize in pairings. (and trust me, romance is FULL of it if you look. :D)
Spring-heeled Jack
I thought about my only canonically het character that I have (I only rp him now, I have a comic planned for him down the line) and even with him all I can think is "if someone wants him to kiss a boy, I super don't care."
Ash🦀
Wait, hold on, have people actually asked to change the story based on who they think should get together? Is that a thing people do? (Forgive my ignorance, I’m not really a fandom person? I’m p shy and keep to myself)
FeatheryJustice
I seen it happen. Which in itself is pretty rude soemtimes because people get angry if their ships aren't canon kinda thing
Ash🦀
Oh my. Thank you for the warning then, I’ll keep it in mind. That’s very rude! Would probably fill me with spite, to be honest. The “well now I’m not doing it” haha. I’m... disappointed but not surprised this happens. Still, it won’t change my mind. XD
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I have run into more than one person who hyperfixates on a ship (in any media, not just comics) that's... honestly, truly, never going to happen? Like, a main character crossed with a background character who had no lines and showed up in a single scene. That sort of thing. Then they implode/explode when it doesn't become canon by the end. If it happened for my own work, I don't know what I'd say. Apart from telling people not to put all their eggs in one basket, I guess I fear that kind of manic fanaticism.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Wasn't that the reason behind that infamous blackmail incident, the Voltron one
or am I mixing it up with a different fandom?
Spring-heeled Jack
Looking at fandoms in general, there are people that get over invested and become possessive. It's a shame.
Deo101 [Millennium]
the fact that it could be more than one fandom says a lot, i think :P
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
yeeeeeah ugh
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
If it's not, I'd still believe it (edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Also the needle in the cookie one (though this was given to a fan artist who drew a ship they didn't like, not the actual author)
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Hoooooooly hell, I feel like I remember that, but not specifically what it was for. NIGHTMARE SCENARIO.
Deo101 [Millennium]
thought that was because they didnt draw a character fat?
again, the fact it could be multiple things
hugely concerning
Spring-heeled Jack
Just, please, never take consumables (food, drink, ect) from strangers.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, I think the "you didn't draw her fat enough" was a different one
Deo101 [Millennium]
:l
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Scary world we live in -_-
Spring-heeled Jack
There are people who get too invested in things and don't know how to process those feelings. Be smart and careful, but don't let those people stop you from making your comic, art, fanart, or anything.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
ngl, I'm honestly legit scared. Not quite terrified but lowkey fear in my mind... I'm not at all active in con circuits, etc. so I don't think any physical harm will happen to me, but I do worry about potential online harassment.
Deo101 [Millennium]
Me too, to be completely honest
Spring-heeled Jack
Conventions are usually really great. I've been at some for about three years now and everyone has been so kind. Online, however, is more of a concern because people can post anything, it's easier with that distance.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Even with a low likelihood of something happening, common sense is definitely good. Don't take food, have a buddy nearby, have an 'out' if you feel uncomfortable. But yeah, cons seem to be lovely so far. If anyone causes trouble, staff usually does a good job wrangling them
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Yeah, I've had great experiences at cons for the most part. A few creepy people that camped out at my table for a bit longer than comfortable, but otherwise it's been great
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Oh yeah The campers. They mean well, but man... they CAMP.
Spring-heeled Jack
I get a lot of lingering people and returning people,. but only once so far did I really have someone just stand there and block others. But he was a bit older and was putting his change in his wallet from a sale, so I didn't want to say anything
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
I love the people who return! I usually get people returning the next day to buy something (or to buy more stuff). Those people always seem so invested in my work.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, it's more the online stuff I worry about
o(-<
Deo101 [Millennium]
me too, I've been real lucky to have people mostly be very kind but theres always new fear with new readers, or every new thing i introduce that someone will be mad about it
Spring-heeled Jack
Lemme clarify, returners are okay, but the ones the are weird and linger and block the booth. That makes me a little stressed out
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Oh man, Deo, I can feel those fears in my bones.
Deo101 [Millennium]
ahahha a bunch of new people show up and youre just like thats a lotta people who could be pissed at me huh?
I had someone get very upset with me over something once, in a way i never imagined someone would, and im coming up on a scene I've been planning for like a year now which canonized my characters trans identities, and I worry some people will think i am hmmmmmm doing a bad job
or not the job they want
Spring-heeled Jack
Forget them. Do what you have planned!
Deo101 [Millennium]
yup! but if people do get very upset with me I will still be hurt, even if I think I am really doing the best job I can
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
hard same
I won't bend my story, but I sure as hell will be hurt
Spring-heeled Jack
I understand. I worry that my queer characters aren't queer enough, but then that's a worry I have about myself IRL, sooooooo, I get you
Deo101 [Millennium]
someone once got upset with me over that ;) so i worry about it too
Spring-heeled Jack
It sucks because the opinion of others both don't matter and SUPER matters
Deo101 [Millennium]
or, sorry, they said I was blase my bad
and yeah like, im gonna do what i want but it still sucks when people are mean about it, regardless
which ^ is kind of how I feel about this shipping topic. Im gonna do what I want but Id really prefer people not be upset over not getting what they want.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I think everyone's mileage varies on what 'the right representation' of relationships and characters is. Barring obvious no-nos, I don't think everyone will ever be 100% satisfied. I do very much dread that one person coming into my comments to tell me "You did this character/ship wrong, thus, you are a bad writer, and probably a bad person - gonna write an article about you now kthxbye" At that point, I would just hope enough people come to my side to go "Um... no?" because I would definitely want to recede far into the nearest dark corner and think about what I've done
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah. when I did get that comment of someone kind of telling me off about how Ive chosen to represent things. I really kind of started... not overthinking, because I dont think that worrying about doing a good job and taking comments into consideration is BAD, per se, but I started really worrying about whether or not i DID do something wrong. my friends came to my defense, which was very nice, and the person did actually end up changing their mind and kind of rescinding their comment. I think places like this and having people that support you to back you up when stuff like this happens is really important
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
It happened to me and it did absolutely suck. I'm genuinely unsure I can take another one if it happens again
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah idk what I would do if someone went... that hard..
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I think there are some reactions that not even sensitivity readers could predict. Like, things that are so out of left field, but also still make a bit of sense if you really, really stretch your brain? Arguments that would make for excellent thesis papers someday, tbh
Spring-heeled Jack
:( I'm really sorry it hurt you that much, Keii. I know I can say "don't let it get to you" all day but you will feel how you feel when someone pulls that kind of stuff. I hope it doesn't happen again and, if it does, I hope it doesn't hurt you!
I hope it helps to remember that there will probably be many people out there that see your work and see the characters and go "That's me!" or "I feel seen!"
Spring-heeled Jack
<3
We get a new topic tomorrow, yeah?
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I think so
Spring-heeled Jack
Nice!

The Arcana Teacher AU
Used to be one.  I know how schools work, ish.  Don’t think anyone’s really done this yet :)  High school, absolutely.  Hogwarts?  Idk maybe.  But teachers?  Maybe not?
NADIA- Social Studies/Economics.  Grade-level leader, goes to lots of teacher trainings, gives presentations at staff meetings, volunteers for summer school, a perfectly-organized and color-coordinated classroom.  Basically if TeachersPayTeachers and Instagram combined to form a person.  TBH all the other teachers are crazy jealous of how awesome her classroom looks. Even though she works long days, she always shows up to work looking flawless (when I taught I didn’t even wear makeup after the second day of school, it took time away from sleeping).  Always willing to help out other teachers with work, or figuring out what to do about students who are struggling with a concept.
JULIAN- Biology.  Yeah, it’s kinda gross dissecting frogs, but he tells jokes and Cool Science Facts to ease the tension, especially if he sees students getting uncomfortable.  Sometimes comes into work hungover, but that’s when he just prints out a class set of an easy fill-in-the-blank worksheet, turns off the lights and puts on a few episodes of Bill Nye the Science Guy.  He tells each class a different story about how he got his eyepatch (first period thinks he wrestled a bear, second is positive he got a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas and shot his eye out, third swears he got attacked by a harpy eagle at a zoo one time).
ASRA- Math.  Like magic, it’s all about the formulas and the steps taken, whether it’s casting a spell or solving an equation.  A difficult subject for many students, but he does his best to make it engaging and fun. His door is always open for students to come in for tutoring, and he loves nothing more than to see a student’s face light up once they finally start to understand.  Besides, how many teachers have a pet snake?  He finds it’s easy for him to teach when Faust is draped around his neck, since the class won’t take their eyes off of her, and therefore him.  Definitely the kind of teacher to hand out candy and allow snacks.  His classroom is filled with stuff from his travels, and if there’s time at the end of class he loves to talk about places he’s been and things he’s seen.  If his students all ace a test, he’ll have a movie day to celebrate.
PORTIA- Art!  There’s nothing she loves more than creating things, and she wants to spread that to others.  Always encouraging students, gushing over their works like they’d just created the new Mona Lisa.  Her classroom is cozy and smells like paint.  There are lots of potted plants around the room... and lots of pictures of Pepi.  She always keeps her door open after school, playing some low-fi hip hop while students come in to work on projects after hours, and is always willing to lend a patient and sympathetic ear if anyone wants to talk.
MURIEL- Wood Shop.  Yeah, I know, he’s huge and could coach football or something if he wanted, but our boy’s a gentle giant.  He’s big on safety equipment and constantly reminds his students about being careful.  He’s even dipped into his own wallet to help buy new goggles and work gloves.  He’s very protective of his students.  He doesn’t talk much during class, unless you ask him questions, then he’ll be happy to help.  If he sees a student struggling, he’ll just walk up behind them and say ‘can I show you an easier way to do that?’, taking their tools in his large hands and making sure they’re watching as he demonstrates.
LUCIO- World History.  Well, history of war.  The man could go on for literally hours talking about warfare through the ages.  He demands full attention on him through the entire class period  No snacks, no bathroom breaks, nothing.  You came here to learn and you will LEARN.  If he HAS to teach you about something else that’s not violence-related (like, I don’t know, the Industrial Revolution, the Space Race, what have you), he’ll just assign readings in the textbook and essays, demanding absolute silence while he sits back at his desk playing Candy Crush on his phone.  Does not allow partial credit or makeup tests.

Lord of Shadows Review & Analysis! SPOILERS AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
On another note about spoilers, I get that seeking out spoilers as well as snippets, are a product of waiting so long for the next book… but I don’t know that I will treat them the same way going into QOAAD because I almost felt, while reading, that I had read 35% of the book already! I can’t promise that I won’t seek out spoilers or snippets, but I do hope that less are released over the next two years (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I would prefer a surprise!) With Regards to Individual Characters: • Emma: a feminist badass, growing into being the best shadowhunter of her time but not there yet. Her sarcasm and skill has improved since LM, and I literally laughed out loud during her POV’s and while reading her quotes. The scene with her and Diego and the fire ants= pure gold. Her scene with Manuel and calling out the cohort for being fascists= pure gold. • Julian: a sweetheart and I want to cry thinking about how much he has been through. I know “Dark Julian” has been referenced several times throughout the fandom but I really didn’t see too much of a change until- actually- the steamy scene with Emma where he demands that she calls him only Julian. Very sexy, very dark too. • Cristina: deserves better and I am dying for more of her POV’s. I am always amazed by her class and maturity. • Diego: not perfect. I am mad at him. • Kit: surprisingly likeable. I am so glad they included POV’s with him and Jace!! • Livia: underrated as hell, so sweet, so caring, so selfless, her charm and sarcasm= gold. • Ty: I AM SO GLAD WE ARE FINALLY STARTING TO SEE T Y B L A C K T H O R N AND HIS TRUE SELF-A M E N. • Dru- her crush on Jaime is fitting for a first crush and I’m glad he gave her the confidence to speak up. I want to hug her literally all the time. • Tavvy- irrelevant but cute. SHIPS: • I surprisingly loved Mark and Emma’s dynamic. Their relationship reminded me of a mundane high school sweetheart kind of relationship, because you can tell they absolutely care about each other, I just don’t see them as anything more than a bromance. I will however agree with the sentiment, "maybe in another life" because maybe, in another series, in another world, they would have been perfect for each other. • Kieran/Mark/Cristina: I find it significant that no choices were made in terms of canon relationships, which I interpret as a canon friendship because if any of them were going to be romantically involved, a decision would be made by now. I enjoy the friendship they have, I surprisingly forgave Kieran, but I do not expect any of the Blackthorns or Emma to forgive him also. His actions in QOAAD will definitely define how I feel about him going forward. • JEMMA: You all know I am 100% a Jemma shipper, but this time around I was glad that their relationship did not overshadow the rest of the book. I liked how private their relationship was, which is a funny word to use because people become more privy to it in LOS and because it was extremely private in LM, but the fact that they were literally in a different part of their country on their own made me all happy. • I am also glad that I got the B&N copy with the extra scene, which I waited to read because it is right after the ending of the book and I did not want to read anything after finishing LOS, lol. • Kitty: No canon romantic relationship yet, still very cute scenes… Ill talk about this in theories. • Kit/Livia: I am glad that Livvy’s first kiss was Kit, and not some random boy who won’t treasure the memory or look back and think “oh she was sweet, it’s a shame what happened to her”. Kit will always treasure the fact that he was Livia’s first kiss, and will cherish the friendship he had with her. It was platonic, but still special. I know people on tumblr were upset with this but I hope by the end of the book they understood. PROFOUND THINGS IN LOS • Lets talk about the fact that Emma Carstairs literally doesn’t cry….. but she cried over Julian literally 400 times in Lord of Shadows. If that doesn’t show you how much she literally loves that boy idk what will. • CLARY SHIPS JEMMA. During their conversation Clary literally says “who I pictured you with [not Mark or Cameron] doesn’t make sense….” This goes back to my question to CC about whether or not Simon knows about Jules and Emma, since he noticed something off during the parabatai ceremony. She responded “he knows something, he just doesn’t know what he knows”. I think the same applies to Clary, maybe she has even had premonitions about it, and that is so so significant. #jemmaisendgame • Kit and Livia and Ty’s friendship: so sweet and pure and is literally the reason why Kit decides to stay. How will Ty and Kit function without their third musketeer? • DRU & JAIME: Thank you Jaime for giving Dru the confidence to confront her family over her role as a Shadowhunter… but the witchlight you left behind that literally portals to another dimension: WTF? WHO IS ASH????? That scene is messed up because it is so short and therefore, subconsciously everyone looks over it because of how chaotic everything else is. I can’t help but feel like this is going to play a MASSIVE role in QOAAD. • Diana & Gwyn: Thank you CC for trans representation and a beautiful story. The fact that Gwyn accepts her wholeheartedly made my chest ache, and I hope that no one will use it against her please please please. • Jules & Emma’s Decision to tell the Inquisitor: Not sure why they did this tbh, but now that Robert is dead, what are their options??? Did he mark it down somewhere? Will they become so irrational that they consider the Seelie Queen’s offer? Livia’s Death • Months ago I received an anon message from someone about Livvy, which literally said that they felt something was going to happen to her and I completely dismissed it…. Thinking we haven’t seen enough of her storyline yet and it was too soon. I AM SO SORRY, and it’s literally all I have been thinking about for days. • Livia was so so selfless, down to her core, the last moments of her life were spent trying to save the people she loves. • I discussed with a mutual that the fact that Annabel did it was both cruel and also extremely fitting. • When you think about it, Livvy was the 21st century version of Annabel. From their appearance, which was remarkably similar, to the way that they treated outsiders taking refuge in their family (Livvy with Kit, Annabel with Malcolm) down to their deaths, both innocents killed trying to protect the ones they love. • The fact that the Mortal Sword shattered to me symbolized the end of the truth and trust within the Clave. • The amount of guilt that each character will carry following these deaths is heartbreaking… • i sincerely hope her death is not tossed to the side, discussed for 150 pages then only mentioned 4-5 times after that because she deserved better, the entire Blackthorn family did, and peace was completely ripped away from them Which brings me to my first theory: I believe there was a reason that Jessamine was introduced to TDA, not only to highlight Kit’s Herondale-ness, but also as a foreshadowing of another character who is not at peace, feels that there is unfinished business, and a group of people needing to be protected: Livia. Because it was made clear in the book that necromancy and raising the dead is forbidden, and because QOAAD takes place a week later, Livvy’s chances of being raised are very very very slim. I sincerely believe that she will come back, but not to life. It would be fitting of her to come back as a ghost (not at first but definitely later in the story) and for her to protect her family, and give Kit and Ty the OK to do whatever they want to do (whether its be a couple or become parabatai, or go to the Scholomance) More theories: • Though I predict a dark Julian, I do not predict a dark/irredeemable Julian, who digs himself into such a big hole that he can’t climb out of it. Remember he has two anchors: his family, and Emma… • The Rosales brothers, especially with their plans to overthrow the Cohort and fool Zara are going to play a massive role in QOAAD. • I think that Jemma are going to have to confide in Jem and Tessa, and they will end up helping Jules and Emma with the parabatai curse. I am also sure they will play a big role in the next book. • Unpopular Opinion: I do not think Clary will die. I know she thinks she will, but CC did say QOAAD is lighter (in regards to themes) than LOS, and I just do not think it would be a lighter book if Clary, a significant character, dies. I think she will become close to death, and people will become concerned, then she will tell Jace of her fears and say yes to his proposal. However, I could very well be wrong!! •i do predict the Cohort being in power for a short amount of time….. because they represent members of our society, I do not think they will be shut down so easily because that’s not realistic. Despite this, hope and love always win. I trust that this will remain true in the next book. • I do predict the end of the Cold Peace, it was never ever a good idea and no one likes it. • I predict that Drusilla will be a hero, now that her older sister has passed away and she has finally decided to step up as a Shadowhunter, I do not doubt that the role she plays will be significant, it just seems to be a reasonable underdog story. • Kitty: parabatai or lovers? An important decision, because Kit does reference his thoughts about being parabatai with Ty, and Ty finally says yes to being parabatai with Livvy. I think it’s a possible “that’s what Livvy would have wanted” trope, but I could also be wrong and think its about as equal of a chance of them becoming lovers. • Who will the new head of the LA Institute be? I sincerely doubt it will go to someone the Blackthorns do not know or trust. They have had so much taken from them, the Institute does not deserve to go next. Possibly Cristina? Will Jules or Emma be of age? Jem or Tessa following the end of the Cold Peace? We have to see! • ASH… I am just frustrated that we do not know more about him… I don’t even have a theory I just needed an excuse to talk about him again. Questions and Theories from my mutuals!!!!! • Anonymous: Its 3 am and I am literally just crying on my bed because of the book. >> Relatable!! I cried hours after I finished because I was so sad. The ending really got me! • Anonymous: Do you think Jaime and Dru are endgame? She is 13 and hes like 17 but he thinks she’s 16. Idk, they seem to have a nice friendship but not a romantic relationship in my opinion.. >> Agreed! I honestly think CC included this first crush idea as a way of introducing Dru’s further character development, not necessarily to introduce them as a couple… But also think about Cecily and Gabriel!!! They were about the same ages at the time, even though that was a different time period… anything is possible, but I do not ship them romantically! • VirginaNewman: I loved LOS, however I was indeed disappointed that Helen + Aline make a debut in the LAST chapter! >> I definitely thought Helen and Aline would play a larger role in LOS, they were barely mentioned, barely had any scenes… I was disappointed by their small role too, but I am interested to see how hard they fight to stay in the next book. Ps- the scene where Aline basically tells Zara to shut her fucking mouth is GOLD. • Betweenshadesoftessagray- Since Robert’s dead, its going to be a race to get that spot, with probably Zara’s father trying to become Inquisior. And since Robert was the one who could help Emma and Julian with the exile thing, they really don’t know what to do with it. I think the powers will continue to grow, and since I think the main battle of QOAAd is going to be a battle where the warlocks and nephilim cannot use their runes/warlock magic, maybe their parabatai magic will still work and that’s how they win. I have already stated that I think there is going to be a battle in QOAAD without being able to use rune magic and the warlocks not being able to use their magic, but this didn’t fit in my other ask I just realized something that made my theory more solid: in the beginning, Zara says she went to Hungary because they were claiming their weapons were not working and she said it was incompetence, so the blight is already spreading not only in Idris but everywhere else. >> This is such a well thought out theory and I wish I could give a formal response but I definitely need to go back, reread, and analyze this… I didn’t even realize the significance of Shadowhunters and warlocks including Magnus losing their powers!! Wow! Is this because of the Black Volume? I definitely think Emma and Julian’s parabatai/love powers will play a huge role in QOAAD and maybe even save the day during this second Dark War. Maybe that’s how they will become heros, their bond will be broken as a reward or something and everyone can live happier ever after? AHH! • Share your theories and thoughts in the comments below or inbox me (not on Anon so I can respond privately!!!)

What is your total word count on AO3?
My total word count on ao3 is 186888, and 85224 of that was written all last year while 101664 of that has been written just this year! I’m actually pretty proud that I’ve already managed to write more than I did last year and that I broke 100k this year already!
How often do you write?
Hmm. This is kind of a tough question because I don’t really have like a set and stone writing regiment. Like I just write whenever I feel like writing. When I’m working on big projects like Fic Exchanges and stuff like that I try to write 1k a day for those fics (not that that always works because let’s be real it doesn’t lmao). This past week I wrote at least 3k a day which was hella fucking nice. But yeah, I go through periods where I’ll write hella like that almost every day and then periods where I can barely even get like 50 words out everyday or where I won’t write for like 2 weeks straight (that sucked. so so much.) I do like to try t write at least a little bit everyday though just so I can say I’ve gotten something done haha.
Do you have a routine for writing?
Mm, not really? I kinda just sit down and write. Usually I sit at my desk and write (I kinda have to sit there if I’m writing for a deadline because then it feels like Business lmao) but occasionally I’ll get comfy on my bed and write there too. I usually write between classes (or sometimes in class tbh) so it’s really just whenever I get the free time to. I always listen to music while I write, usually I try to match what songs/artists/genres/playlsits I listen to to what I’m trying to write and the mood/genre of the fic. But then sometimes I don’t and I just listen to whatever comes on haha. Sometimes when I’m just writing all day and I start getting frustrated because either I’m not finished yet or the words just aren’t working I find it helpful to just step away from my laptop and take a shower or something. That really helps because then I come back refreshed and ready to try again.
What are your favorite kinks/tropes/pairing?
Oooh this is a fun question haha. I love a shit ton of tropes so let’s see... I think my all time favorite trope is fake relationship, but I’m a huuuge sucker for coffee shop aus, and when they’re done well I really like enemies to lovers too. Oh and give me alllllll the harry potter aus in the world I fuckin love those omg. And I really enjoy parent fics or kid fics, those are nice. And the whole “oh no we have to share a bed” trope- sign me the fuck up.
As for favorite pairing... well I’m partial to Evak and Spierfeld because I’ve written for those a shit ton, so I guess those are my favorites. Buuut I do like Nooreva (which I’ve written!) and Jokael (which I haven’t written but would like to at some point!) and Evilde (which I also haven’t written but wouldn’t mind writing one day). Also from different fandoms I kind of want to write a stucky fic one day eventually maybe. And I do love a good scorbus, wolfstar, johnlock fic in terms of reading.
And then kinks hm. Not really sure what it means by this lmao, like what kinks I like to write?? I guess Isak’s public bathroom kink is always a fun one, and I 100% believe he has a thing for Even’s thighs (is this me projecting? whaaaaat?) Even seems like the kind of guy with a hair pulling kink maybe... idk man. Oh actually, Even totally absolutely 100% gets off on domesticity, he fucking loves that shit. Isak made him breakfast in bed? Boner. He and Isak tag team the dishes with one of them washing the other drying? Boner. Buying furniture for a new house? Boner. He eats that shit up for sure.
Wow that got long.... lmao
Do you have a favorite fic of yours?
Ooh okay hmm. I think my favorite Evak fic that I’ve written is probably I Have Hella Feelings because one I just fucking love the title of it lmao and two that one originally was just supposed to be a oneshot but then I wrote a second part and was like well shit I already know people are going to ask for me to write the smut that would inevitably be a third part and then I just,,,, kept,,, writing,,, and suddenly it was a full on chaptered fic. And I remember that I had absolutely nothing planned for it and literally wrote each and every chapter the night before I posted it lmao so I kinda liked how spontaneous it was and how it actually worked. Idk that fic just makes me really proud.
As for Speirfeld fics, I think my favorite one of those that I’ve written is either my soulmate au Where I Like You Best or my college au Lies as Sweet as Chocolate. I was really really happy with how both of those fics turned out, especially the soulmate one tbh because I hadn’t ever written a soulmate au before that and tbh they kind of scared me to write idek why but they did. But I wrote that one and I kinda loved it. And then the college au one was just so much fun to write and the end product made me really happy. So yeah, I’d say one of those is my favorite!
Anything you don’t like about your writing?
Haha. Of course there is. Would I be a writer if I loved every single thing about my writing and didn’t have things I hate? No. Exactly. Nah but I think one thing I don’t like is that I feel like I use certain phrases or actions a lot and like I have a few in mind and I’m not going to mention them because even though no one probably is even reading this lmao the off chance that someone is and sees those and then notices it in every single one of my fics.... yeah no thanks. Lmao. But yeah there’s certain phrases/actions I feel like I overuse and I’m trying my best to not overuse them but it’s hard lmao.
Also, I can tell when I’m rushing through something or I like, don’t really care I guess, anymore. I don’t think not caring is the right way to word it because I do care, but I think it’s just when I get to that point where the writing isn’t working and I’m getting frustrated I feel like I start to rush through the writing just so I can finally be done with it and then I end up skipping over the details and it just sounds really stiff and choppy and stilted to me. And like idk but when that happens that’s when I really start to hate my writing because I know that it’s not my best and that I can do better.
Now something you do like?
Hmmm. For the most part I like my writing and I typically don’t hate every single thing I write or my writing in general because like idk I think it’s because I know that every time I sit down to write I’m writing for me and because I enjoy writing and I like these characters and this world enough to expand on it, not because I feel like I owe anyone anything.
I guess I like the way that I try to pay attention to details a lot. Like I like making sure that my works are descriptive enough that the reader can see it come to life in their mind and like actually envision the characters doing whatever it is they’re doing or picture the location they’re at like the reader themselves are there too. I don’t know I just really like detailing things and focusing on the small things that can like help to really make a story yknow? Like in my Simon vs. fics I’ve tried to incorporate small little nods to the book and the movie alike and when people comment that they like that I’ve done that that makes me happy haha. And I’ve tried to do that in my skam fics as well, little references to events/details in the show too. So yeah, I guess I’m pretty good at the small details like that.
(Oh my god, that last question was a lot harder than I expected it to be lmaoo)
