#And pretending that their foster mother was not their foster mother when she just sucked at being a parent is weirder

My next unpopular fandom take is people would’ve been bothered by the foster sibling to lovers relationship in She-Ra if Adora and Catra were the same skin color.

ok for the pairing/word prompt
pairing: shawn and chief vick
word: fergulous
haha get it ok sorry actual word for the prompt is: limit
:3
set somewhere around later s2ish
"Chief, I've come to a conclusion."
"Mmm?"
"I believe this baby and I are spiritual cousins. We can commune on a metaphysical level. Just look at her great head of hair."
Bringing a six month old infant to a police station is not exactly what her mother-in-law would call orthodox parenting, but the nanny cancelled last minute, and, if Karen is being truthful, there's a limit to the number of hours she can go in a row without having her daughter close by.
It's also true, Karen has to admit, that Iris was born with a fully-thatched head of thick dark curls.
"Don't drop her, please," is all she says, signing at the bottom of yet another ream of paperwork. To say it had surprised her when Shawn Spencer spent the better part of the last hour after her ten a.m. briefing hovering above her desk and pretending very hard like he had no interest at all in holding a baby is an understatement. Whatever cool detachment and casual flippancy he’d used to flirt around her office with previously is now gone, and Karen observes with no small measure of bemusement the fluttery look of mesmerized fascination on his face while he stands, shockingly still, with her unusually quiet and peaceful baby nestled only slightly awkwardly in the crook of his arm.
"Boss," Shawn starts again after another blessed minute of silence, his eyes still glued to the baby. "You gotta level with me here. Does Mr. Vick get more attention from womankind when he goes out with the stroller?"
"I'm going to have to ask that you don't make me consider the possibility, Mr. Spencer."
She signs another document.
"Aw, come on. Chicks love it when a man is on the same mental wavelength as kids. That's why I worked at a summer camp for six months, you know."
She has always wondered whether Shawn has experience working with children; there was that one horrible suicide case a few weeks ago that left a little girl in foster care, and the three hours she spent at the station that could have been miserable for all involved were mostly occupied instead by elaborate games of i Spy and – inexplicably – bananagrams. Shawn had claimed the game was a staple feature of Gus’s work backpack.
Not entirely unbelievable, Karen admits.
"Mmm," is all she says now, flipping to her next page serenely. Iris coos. Shawn stares at her in awe and lets her suck on his probably-unclean pinky.
She doesn't grimace, because when she looks up it's to the sight of Detective O'Hara frozen behind the glass door to her office, an expression on her face akin to a limpid-eyed doe caught in the throes of a cotton-candy-flavored swoon. If the door were open Karen thinks that they’d probably hear a squeak. She watches Juliet catch herself, turn on her heel, and scamper back to her desk.
Karen sighs; she probably was going to deliver a much needed report on the Lamden case.
She needs that report, dammit.
"Mr. Spencer," she says cooly, internally lamenting the imminent loss of her free baby soother. "Don't you have a murderer to catch?"
"Hm?" says Shawn, nasally. Iris has grabbed ahold of his nose and is burbling softly.
"The dead girl from this morning?"
"Oh, yeah," Shawn says, sounding like a cartoon character. "The boyfriend did it."
"Concrete evidence, if it won't be too much trouble, Mr. Spencer."
He rolls his eyes, but Iris is deposited carefully back into her bassinet. She hiccups. Shawn salutes and skips away. As Karen expected, Detective O'Hara reappears exactly a minute later, clutching case files to her chest and looking only a little bit more dreamy-eyed than usual.
"If you could leave the Lamden report on my desk, Detective," Karen starts without looking up, and, when Juliet, too, begins to hover, hides another pleased grin.
Perhaps this wasn’t the worst idea she’d ever had, after all.

2023 Anime Overview: SHY and Migi & Dali
SHY
Tumblr media
Premise: In a world where every country has a superhero, 14 year old Teru is Japan's. Her hero name is Shy, and that's exactly what she is-- she's a bit of shrinking violet at times and deals with social anxiety, which makes the public part of being a hero a struggle for her. But with a mysterious boy going around and turning people's hearts and pain against them to make them into dark, painful threats, she and the other heroes are going to have to step things up.
SHY is very much a magical girl show with am American-style-superhero coat of paint, and that's really what draws me to the series. Powers are based on your heart and emotions, the heroes friends and loved ones have their pain and despair manifest as terrible powers when induced by an outside force and then our heroes having to reach out to these people with love and compassion...it is so magical girl core. There's even a magical battle where mother and daughter must reach out to each other!
Also very distinctly magical girl-esque is how a lot of the series is focused on Teru and her cute girl bff having yuri undertones. Said friend calling out her name even activates Teru's "heart" and her powers truly awaken. IDK Teru that's pretty gay.
It does some things that are cool to see in a superhero show- like centering female characters and featuring a disabled superhero. This Anifem article also has an interesting take on one of the fights.
It's also not overly fanservicey so far either, though Teru mentions once that her leotard is skimpier than she's comfortable with (apparently magic assigns them their clothes) which sucks, (and it highlights her rear more than I'm comfortable at times considering her age). Let her have pants! But hey, after dealing with MHA's bullshit, I'll count my blessings that it's a regular leotard.
SHY is often a little silly-- the fact that apparently every country getting a superhero ended ALL WAR somehow is so ridic it wraps around to being endearing. It's also engages in some national stereotypes --for instance the Russian superhero who is Shy's mentor whole schtick being that she's always drunk (but you see it's okay because her alcoholism is based in her childhood love for her parent and she's fine and). There's a weird moment where an adult acts like she's going to kiss a teenager as a prank, and the pacing is a little uneven.
But when it hits, it really hits, and you really root for Teru. Seeing a superheroic take on struggling with social anxiety is fun, and Teru's passion and strength shines through. I'm excited to see more of her adventures, and fortunately a second season is confirmed!
Migi & Dali
Tumblr media
Premise: Orphaned twins Migi and Dali perform an amazing con to get adopted by a couple (who mention preferring to adopt only one child)-- they decide to pretend to be only one person, a boy named Hitori, with one of them always just out of sight as school or at home. They go to absurd levels to keep this up because they have an important goal-- their mother was murdered in this town, and they're going to do all they can to find her killer. But what mysteries does this suburban town hold?
It's hard to put Migi & Dali into words, but I'll do my best. It starts out as an utterly absurd show that plays it's "spookiness" so ridiculously that it becomes comedy (Mother's Basement compared it to the potato chip scene from Death Note, and I think that's apt, though it's very much intentional with this show). Seeing the ridiculous lengths the twins go to in order to keep up their con is amazing. Situations like them assuming their foster mother must be scalping children because they don't understand what a wig is or one twin throwing on a wig on so the other twin (who should know what he looks like because he can LOOK IN THE MIRROR) doesn't recognize him are hilarious.
Tumblr media
But then the show also becomes a tightly plotted and genuinely tense murder mystery that is incredibly moving at times? WHAT? All while keeping up it's signature brand of goofiness and absurdity! Side characters I did not expect to care about go through great development, Migi and Dali have some great character arcs, there's some genuine commentary on abuse, the damage you can do to children by forcing perfection on them, the struggle of being a foster kid, grief and recovery and more.
There are some things to warn for--parental abuse, rape through deception (def framed as bad, but yep. that happens), general harm to children, a very uncomfortable strip search of a child that involved ass-grabbing, and the weird bits where teen characters are kidnapped and forced to dress up and act like a baby (which turns out to be very thematically important and follows an interesting arc of being played partly for comedy at first then becoming deadly serious later) and of course the murder and stuff you'd expect from a murder mystery. (There's also some stuff involving infertility I think is fraught, but I can't really get into it without spoiling).
I know that's a huge list, but the show is definitely very rewarding--entertaining and full of more incredible twists and turns that one show has any right to be. Including the greatest housekeeper of all time, i would follow her into hell.
I can't get into more without spoiling, but yes, if you can handle this weird, wild ride, you should absolutely go on it. Sano Nami was a true talent.

But then she smiled, and her gorgeous green eyes seemed to shine, and his heart of stone started to crack. He felt the warmth flood his cheeks and his throat felt dry. He knew he was a fool if he thought this could work.
Kshdksjkd giiiiirl? Okay let's get started
So yeah, Ellie being the orphan kid no one wants is typical in every universe so I wasn't really surprise when miss girl's first scene as a child was sitting woth an officer lol poor baby. That foster mother was a real bitch, second villian in this story just behind her husband (that btw was david? He wasn't mentioned but I just figured). It really pisses me off in every fic that Marlene has the same personality she has as canon: ellie lives a miserable life and marlene still acts like the girl is just being ungrateful or something. Yikes. So ellie got to live with marlene in this one, that's a miracle.
I'm very curious about what ellie's blood disease is, is it life risking even on earth? I really hope not, because she it already crushed her dream :( and wait, so Nasa kind of knew about it but let it go as a form to keep exploring her image? Wow, that... Sucks. But doesn't surprise me actually.
Oh man, I remember reading some anon here said something about brother-in-law Tommy and I feel like that really is gonna be something in this story lol. He just met ellie aka cute girl from the bar once (twice now) and he's already more invested in this relationship than Joel😂and by the way he was asking what did joel do, it won't take long for tommy to take only the "brother" role from "brother-in-law". And hell, that was mighty akward lmao, I had to pause every sentence because it made me cringe (in a good way), but it was also funny so I couldn't stop giggling.
Well, I forgive Joel. I feel like he really realized how much he fucked up by ghosting her when he saw how it made her feel used. He's so bad at feelings, Geez, maybe that's why they never gave him a pixel girfriend in the games🤭
Anyways, I'm excited to see how this is all gonna turn out (specially to see how bad they can pretend they can be just friends lol).
- Merida Cub
Hello Merida Cub! I’m so glad you’re following along - I hope you continue to after the next chapter - we’ve got a new trope coming and it can make readers land on one side or the other. Ominous, I know 😏
So yes, Ellie’s foster parents when she was 13 was David and his wife - and I will circle back to this later, just like I will circle back to what happened to Sarah in Joel’s backstory. I wanted to lay the groundwork, but leave enough out so the reader finds out the whole story when Joel and Ellie finally bond over their trauma.
Marlene is not the villain in this story - she just didn’t give enough of her time and resources to Ellie when she needed it the most. Marlene gives Ellie what she needed when she was a teenager - a roof over her head and steady schooling so Ellie could thrive - which of course, Ellie still did on her own. Marlene will show up again later.
I tried to play Ellie’s disease off her canon condition - a type of blood disease. And of course, I’m not a doctor or scientist, so I’m playing fast and loose and taking dramatic license for this. Something that’s not life threatening, but could derail her career, but also will have future implications. Ominous, I know 😏
100% Tommy is more invested in the relationship than Joel is! He is good little brother and fully committed to the idea of being Ellie’s big brother, a role he’s never had, but would wholeheartedly embrace. Plus, he knows his brother has been in a dark place for a long time, and Ellie is clearly a bright light that Joel needs. Maria is Maria, that’s all I’m gonna say, lol.
Joel is so bad with his feelings - he doesn’t want to hurt this girl like he’s hurt others. I’ve alluded to Tess and Tommy forcing themselves to stay in Joel’s life after losing Sarah. Now Ellie is there and what’s she gonna do? Annoy the hell out of him - curious about his job, coming to his classroom because - let’s face it - she likes him, and she doesn’t want to just be his friend. And Joel is all “I you work on the other side of the building, what do you want?” 🤭🤭 You, she wants you, you fool

Let's Rewind! Toast watches Voltron: Defender of The Universe (1984)
Season 1, Episode 27: The Green Medusa Season 1, Episode 28: Treasure of Planet Tyrus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 27: The Green Medusa ALL RIGHT MY OTHER FAVORITE EPISODE OF DOTU
Ty Lotor for the lore, Planet Medusa was hit with a solar flare that put all of its people into a coma, his plan is to snatch one and let it loose on Arus ofc The sad part about this is that they picked a mother who lost her children, so she's having the worst time
I like the design for the Medusan, just wish it had more flair and no boobs,, is this woman not reptilian why does she have breasts
Ah there's the namesake, when angry the Medusan can grow pretty large, their hair transforms into snakes, and ya guessed it, their laser vision turns enemies to stone she looks a lot more monstrous in this form, a better look imo
Hey a scene from before is reused! We're back on Arus now and the scene of people crowding around lance pidge and hunk for their offer of food from the episode where Sven got got was reused for them calling for orphans since Allura is using part of the castle as an orphanage now A sweet gesture, wish there was more info about it
Back at the castle, an infant apparently chose Keith to be their foster dad oh, I am so making either an AU or a HC from this scene omg
PIDGE LORE he's an orphan! And adopted out of the system recently from what it looks like
Tumblr media
His adoptive parents <3
aw no Pidge,, he still wishes to have his biological mother with him, that's always a hard wish to have, not that I can comment much on it as I'm not adopted
Attack time and the team is already in their lions wow, no launch animation sequence? Amazing
AND NO ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE MEDUSAN? THIS ISN'T THE USUAL EPISODE FORMAT also pidge ejects from green who ends up smashing into the castle flooring below, I thought you were a better pilot than this kid
The Medusan mother grabs him after he lands onto the floor but instead carefully picks him up and places him onto her palm, even her expression is soft! This is why I love this episode, pidge found a mom and yknow what good for him because he keeps getting badass women figures in his life
Allura is freaking out about it and Lance wants to shoot everything at her for grabbing pidge before keith tells him again that she's got pidge in her grasp PIDGE IS JUST ROUTINELY GETTING ADOPTED AT THIS POINT AND WE LOVE THAT HERE
Pidge wakes up in a cave with the Medusan and tries running off but for some reason turns back and then immediately gets brought back by one of her snakes who nuzzle him after picking him back up how cute! I think Pidge knows something is going on especially because she only took him elsewhere instead of killing him
"he's awful little to see from up here" -Hunk such a cute line
PIDGE YOU MADE HER CRY, at least he apologized Lotor finds the two of them and immediately tries to capture them, but she protects pidge from it, and he finally realizes she's protecting him
Pidge likes snakes, sucks for lance who is definitely afraid of snakes after Bokar
Lotor says that he created a monster with too good a heart Created?? mf you KIDNAPPED A MOTHER AFTER FORCFULLY AWAKING HER FROM HER COMA YOU DIDN'T CREATE SHIT
Coran and Nanny immediately think Pidge is dead after the team searches for him again and still doesn't find him which like that's a sane assumption, but I'm also biased against them so how fucking DARE they pretend to care now >:/
Sike, Pidge is alive and he made friends with his new mom, Anga HE'S JUST CHILLING ON HER HAND LIKE IT'S NOTHING, MAN IS LIVING THE LIFE And suddenly Hunk is real hopeful that Anga has a friend lol
Attack hours again, this time with a REAL robeast and Haggar tries to force Anga to attack pidge so he PULLS OUT HIS GUN TO SHOOT AT HAGGAR ICONIC
Anyway Anga is shrunk down to her normal size and Pidge gets back to making sure Haggar knows who the bitch is between the both of them, and it ain't the little boy with a blicky that's for sure
Pidge gets a piggyback ride from Anga but she's super hurt and collapses before they reach the castle so Pidge promises to come back for her after having a memory of his adoptive mother giving him a piggyback right too THIS KID CAN FIT SO MUCH BACKSTORY AND TRAUMA IN HIM OH MY GOD
Voltron formed, robeast defeated, another scene is reused where Lance is kissed by allura and pidge gets kisses from the mice when he asks instead not the best scene to use? i mean nobody did anything except for pidge but all he did was make friends with a woman who died trying to do the right thing for him
/episode end
Episode 28: Treasure of Planet Tyrus
Planet Tyrus is a vacation planet i see, i can't tell if it was taken over and made a vacation planet for the villains to relax at or if it was always like that
So as an amateur archivist for older voltron content, I can definitely see why there were so many people who loved lotor specifically, the douchebag attitude probably doesn't take away from his looks either huh
oh so definitely conquered and it's lotors birthday! I wonder when this aired so I can assign that to him
i'm sorry, Zarkon stole treasure from Arus the week before the events of the episode?? guys what the fuck are you letting happen on arus
the team infiltrates the ship that apparently carrying said treasure, and it's deserted! they find a golden statue of lotor though, so that's pretty wild what the fuck is chitter doing on the ship, did i skip something on accident again
I'm sorry, red lion is able to phase through fucking metal? Lance is straight up hiding in the lotor statue what does this fucking imply because-
lotor sends a squad to go grab the treasure from the ship and keith pretends to be a guard only for the lead of the squad to say "nah youre not treasure so fend for yourselves" absolutely ruthless
the quality of this dub is so low lmao, looks like the team didn't realize that it was keith under the mask when he fell with the key in front of lotor because it was hunks voice first before keith suddenly pipes up and reveals himself
lotor v lance sword fight rematch AND LANCE GETS CAUGHT BY A TRAP DOOR WHAT KEITH TRIED TO CATCH HIM BUT WATCHED HIM FALL very homosexual of them
how many times has allura slapped lotor now? 3 times? she's right to do it every time
oh shit keith lance and pidge are about to be burnt a la witch trials, obvs allura is forced to watch because why would lotor kill her but mouse to save the day because chitter is biting the rope away
LANCE SURVIVES AND HE BLOWS UP BOTH THE CAKE AND THE STATUE he's so great, what a way to stick it to lotor on his birthday
voltron v command ship, obvs they win and apparently are able to get the valuables back allura makes fun of lotor and says he aged 10 years instead of only the 1

THE LETTER - An Epilouge To Fourth Wing - Part 1 - Part 2
Story Summary-
Twenty year old Sloane Mairi, sister to Liam Mairi, and daughter of Colonel Mairi and Isaac Mairi, Awaits her brothers first letter of his second year, before she can leave for the Riders Quadrant and see him again.
I sit in my room that I share with four other, younger girls, along the window seat where I have just received a new book from the market in Alrysben. I should be packing what I can in a rucksack, but I'm reading, because if I don't read what I have now, I never will.
Xaden sent a letter telling me to pack light, no books, whatever knives I still have from my mother, as well as my Tyrrish Stone that my mother gave all the marked children before the execution, because of course Xaden knows I still have it, both Liam and I do, it's the only thing we still have from our mother.
All of my other possessions consist of things Xaden, Liam and my fostered sisters have gotten me for my birthdays over the years, as well as my letter book-  it consists of every letter I've received since I was six- and the few things Lady Burnam has gotten us.
Though Lady Burnam is a temperamental woman- when Eya was here, she had had more than a few screaming matches with her - she is kind to all of the younger girls and boys that live with us.
At least I can see Liam in a few days. I think as Kahla and Bryn run through the room, playing what appears to be pretend dragon riders, Helena sits down next to me, her bobbed red hair bouncing as she slumps, then places a hand on my shoulder.
"Hey, have you finished packing yet?" She's two years younger than me, and the only other I share the room with. I shake my head and close my book.
"I still have a few days," I pause, then look up to the door, where the mail carrier sits, divying up who's mail is whose, "I'm trying to read what I can of this book before I leave."
She scoffs, "Read, read, read, that's all you ever do, Dear Dunne, you won't last in the Quadrant." Her gaze shifts, "If only they'd let you become a scribe."
I shrug my shoulders and breathe through the impending fear that seems to stay in my chests these days.
Fynn opens the door, his hand over his eyes, "Are you guys dressed?" He asks. When Bryn shouts yes, he picks her up from behind the door, "Good!" He spins his little sister around. He'll be leaving with me for the Quadrant, and hopefully, I pray, he will cross the Parapet safely.
I clear my throat and gesture my hand to the open door, and Fynn sets down his sister, his skin is dark, like Bodhi or Xaden, but a tad bit lighter, "Right, sorry, Lady Burnam wants all of us that are leaving to come down to her office." He answers. I nod and dust off my stuffy uniform from home-study as I set down my book.
I glance back to Helena, and nod with a smile, then call out to the girls before I exit, "Don't be too much trouble for Helena while I'm gone! I'll be back you know!" I call out, and the girls giggle.
We walk the long halls in silence, I don't know Fynn well, but I know he fought like hell to make sure he got here with Bryn. The last six years haven't been easy, I know I miss Liam every day, but at least Fynn and Bryn weren't apart.
"Are you ready?" He asks, trying to fill the voided silence.
I let out a self-deprecating laugh, "Me? The five-foot-six, skinny, blonde daughter of Colonel Deriana Mairi, who sucks at doing anything but swinging with a sword, ready?" His pace slows and he worrys with his hands.
"You're good at stuff, like a lot of stuff, and you're great at battle practice, well not Emek great, but you're good!" He tries to comfort. He continues walking, the asks another question, "Are you excited to see Liam?" I nod eagerly.
"It's going to be great, Xaden wrote me a few months ago saying that he bonded a red daggertail named Deigh."
"Xaden still writes?" He asks with a slight laugh.
"Well he writes me for Liam, to make sure that we are both doing okay, and also because we grew up in Aretia together, so we're kind of close." I respond.
"Ah, I can't even remember the last letter I got from him, it was before he left, but after his first check in letter." When we had all been separated, Xaden, Garrick, Liam, and Bodhi had all sent every marked child of the Apostate, a letter to check in, ask how we were settling in, and if we were sleeping good.
We reach the end of the hallway, where Lady Burnam's office sits, filled with the three other boys who will leave with me for the Riders Quadrant.
Lady Burnam turns in the chair that she sits in for all but six hours of the day. "Good Evening dears!" She clasps her hands together, and smiles, "Have you all finished packing?" I am really tired of getting asked this question today.
Everyone else nods in murmered agreements besides me. Lady Burnam turns her hand in a gesture, "Sloane? Is that right? Did you finish packing?" I shake my head, and answer.
"No ma'am, I'm going to pack tonight."
She nods, her green gaze catching mine, "Good, good. Well that's all I really wanted to check in with, well, that, and to wish you all good luck, I'll be praying to Zihnal for all of you."
We all give quick thanks before we are dismissed. Dinner starts in an hour, and it might as well be our goodbye dinner, despite that being in three days, when we board a cart for Basgaith.
When I renter our room, the girls are sitting reading through their history textbook, and Helena is sharpening a Tyrrish dagger.
I fall back onto my bed, and let out an exasperated sigh. Helena looks up from sharpening, and twists her head like an animal; "Are you okay?" I nod, my arms splayed out above my head.
Bryn and Kahla squirm up on either side and hug me tight. "We're gonna miss you Sloane." They whimper into my sides. I reach down and stroke their long, braided hair. Bryn's is a long fishtail, and Kahla has a short two strand.
"I'm going to miss you too." I whisper. One of the servants walks in and smiles, it's Dahlia, and she urges the girls upright.
"Come on you two! It's bath night! I've got bubbles, and-" She rattles a box, "wood incense!" The girls sit up and rush to follow her out of the door.
Helena sits down on the bed, and something slides on my night stand. "You got mail, it's from Garrick Tavis, Imogen Cardulo, Eya and Xaden." She says quietly, "They're all marked urgent." She runs a hand through my long blonde hair, then stands to walk out for a shower.
Yes! They're probably all telling me about what to expect after I cross the Parapet. I sit upright and reach for Xaden's letter, and break the seal.

O SHIT BALLS I FORGOT TO SEND YOU ONE OF THESE AAAAA
Some asks for Jo Mama the perfumer
👎 Is there someone your OC can’t stand, despite them being on the same side or sharing basic values?
🥪 On a scale from ‘burns water’ to ‘5 course menu’ how well can your OC cook?
🌊 Has your OC ever seen the ocean? If not, do they want to? What do they think of it?
🤝 Does your OC have someone they want at their side when they are scared? Who?
🧙Does your OC level intelligence? What do they think about spells?
Some asks for smol Yani
🎒 If your OC had to pick three things of all their belongings to keep, which would they chose?
🔪 What does your OC think how they’ll die?
OMG!!! MY FAV BRITISH MAN THE ONE AND ONLY
yay!!! asks on my fav depraved perfumer Joe mama!!!! Adding a read more cus this a long one
👎; yes, and it's Miquella. Though technically both stand against the golden order, Jhomara simply believes his methods are bullshit. Promise land? Abundance? Love and peace on planet earth were we all sing kumbaya and hold hands? Yeah look how well that turned out. Though it's not to say she doesn't hold some sort of reverence for him, she admires his dedication, though she scoffs at his fate.
🥪; burns water, air, dirt, you name it. She was raised in the shunning grounds, my girl eats rat and slugs on a stick.
🌊; She LOVES the ocean, it's the one of the few things she does. Since leaving the shunning grounds, she was enamoured by the beaches on Limgrave. It's tranquility reminds her of her foster mother.
🤝; her foster mother, Inenphaye the omen. Though now deceased, she swears sometimes she can hear her singing in the oceans waves. When she's afraid, which is hardly (bloodboil aromatic moment), she pretends she's in her arms again.
🧙; no , imagine leveling intelligence L + ratio+ get maidens + faith is better + dragon communion rules + ermmmmm comet azur user 🤓 + suck my balls + incantations are cooler
And now Yani 🩷🩷
🎒; an emerald pendant gifted to her by Miquella, a pen and an empty book. She spends most of her time writing poems, notes or just anything really. Plus, not everyone knows sign language, so it's good to have regardless of where she is.
🔪; ideally, she wishes to die of old age by the twins' side. She can't ever imagine anything bad happening in the Haligtree, so it would be a shame if something unexpectedly terrible would happen....like a certain queen shattering the elden ring. And a certain battle that left the Haligtree defenseless. And a certain demigod capturing her slumbering lord. And uh getting unfortunately caught up in it or something.....
But we ignore canon <3 shes healthy n well

OK finally watching oshi no ko anime, it turns out all i needed was to go outside for like an hour and im normal again
my thoughts under the cut (writing as i watch) (long) (lots of thoughts) (beautiful and true?) (manga reader) (don't read if anime only) (spoilers) (seriously) (i talk alot) (lots of thoughts)
at this point i've reread oshi no ko enough times that even if i didnt already know japanese i could probably make it without the subs SDJLF but its so cool to see lines and panels that im so familiar with brought to life!! i also liked goro's death scene, especially the way they used static and cut between shots. i keep on pulling out my physical copies of onk (well mostly vol 1) and pointing at my screen and the corresponding part of the book like
Tumblr media
2. AIIIII little known fact about me is that ai is genuinely my favorite character... WHICH SUCKS BECAUSE SHE DIES IN THE FIRST VOLUME. seriously we only ever get to see her after this when a. her name or demeanor is invoked by another character b. aqua has his numerous mental breakdowns or c. flashbacks (including but not limited to aqua's mental breakdowns). i am always down for ai content!!!
3. its so much easier to ignore the weird vaguely sexual stuff from their babyhood because i know the rest of the series is normal and cool and not into that sort of stuff👍
4. speaking of normal yayayay it's aqua back when he was actually normal and not "normal" :D like he is just a baby. do you think now that oshi no ko is popular people will get into internet arguments about whether you can ethically have aqua as your favorite character post-normalification. actually wait this may already have been happening in the dark depths of some discord server out there.. but i dont use discord so im blissfully unaware
5. OH i dont think ive seen all of the OG b komachi before? or at least not in high detail. epic!
6. infant ruby telling people on the internet "kys" before age 2... truly a model twitter user
7. not gonna lie i havent really ever liked the way babies are drawn here (including manga)... idk their heads just look way too big like adult heads drawn on toddler bodies then ""cutified"". but this is a personal gripe
8. do you think because of infantile amnesia the twins forgot about the whole pretending to be amaterasu moment. do you think miyako still remembers. can you imagine being the foster mother of two kids who you believe to be gods sent to earth. do you think she remembers that she was "charged by the gods with keeping ai's secret" and then aqua. you know.
9. imagine: you married the ceo of a mid production company because you want to date hot men. there are no hot men in sight. you have to watch over one of the idol's twin infant babies. they reveal to you that they are divine messengers of god and also they can speak normally. there are no hot men in sight. you tend to their every need because you don't want divine retribution. you explain the intricacies of the idol industry in detail every couple of days when they complain about the injustices of the world. there are no hot men in sight. you become their foster mom after they witness the traumatic death of their mother, whose secrets you where charged with keeping safe. at least 12 years pass. they never mention any of this again. you manage the idol group one of them is in. there are still no hot men in sight. your name is miyako. every day you wake up.
10. i like how gotanda gives his business card to a toddler. whats he gonna do, call you on his fisher price dial phone? well actually nevermind aqua is probably the only other toddler (alongside ruby) who could make use of a business card
11. KANAA LETS FUCKING GOOOOO but also nothing will ever top 'lick a lying snitch/flick a crying switch'...... nothing ever... :( also taking the opportunity now to say ive always found it hilarious she assumed 'aqua' is his stage name and not his actual legal name, that's how ridiculous it is DSKLFJ
12. sobbing at the ruby ai dance... dont even have that many words i just really like it.. do you guys think ai was thinking about her own mom [& abuse/lack of relationship thereof]? not even just in this scene but in her more serious moments when she's thinking about her kids it's like "i want to make millions so they can go to the nicest schools and have the nicest things" "i want my daughter to dance freely and happily and i will support her in this" which ig can also be excused as 'thats just what a normal parent wants' but idk i like taking into consideration her own past and lack of parental support when looking at the way she tries to raise her children (not that she exactly got a chance to, even while still alive)
13. also i realized at this point that ep 1 is like an hour long not just because of the whole 'we gotta make sure no one drops this before the reveal that shows what this story's actually gonna be about', but also because it would be kinda awkward to have cut any of these scenes out? or not like out completely but like from each other. like if we had ended ep 1 at for example where they do their silly baby dance and go twitter viral (chapter 5 aka the midpoint of vol 1). that wouldve been terrible. but we can't cut it any earlier, or any later. ai's death feels like the natural conclusion to this problem. also i can't really see much of the other sections being stretched out to fit a full episode length being done very well. having ep 1 be a full 90 minutes lets them be as long as they need to be, aka a 1:1 adaptation of the manga.
14. oh boy chapter 9 time
15. i don't have anything to say about ai's outlook that has not already been said but this is the scene that made her my favorite character. not being able to tell at what point your lies become reality.. not really knowing if you've ever loved or been loved truly because your entire concept of 'love' was based off insincerity necessary for survival.. and now not ever being given the chance to explore what 'real love' means to you. FUCK
16. aww i love all these little family moments they added! very cute ^_^
17. yayy go kids get traumatized ^_^ also for some reason i remember the stalker as having really light hair o-0 fascinating. i remembered his name though!! just like ai fr
18. speaking of hair i also did not realize saitou was blond i thought he had brown hair..
19. hey the bandana (? i forget the word) guy holding the ai fan sign during the news montage is from one of the intros to the vol 1 chapters where hes like 'oh yeah i wonder where those dancing babies are now'!
20. another part of that montage shows a house with a wii in it, which came out november 19 2006. characters are shown using twitter which started earlier that same year; it was a pretty popular website even in 2008, but the mobile app only became a thing in like 2010. i'm seeing a mix of flip phones and smart phones so this has gotta take place sometime around 2010. it's kinda difficult to tell exactly what age the twins are in the main story because like the first page of vol 2 has ruby listing her age as 14, but - and the proof is not at my finger tips rn - i swear to god they're like 16 at this point. i have legitimate reasons to believe this but i need to grab exact proof adding to that we also have 15 years of lies, which if im remembering right would be referring to the twins age? i was trying to logic out exactly what year oshi no ko takes place in even though i already know the answer is 'in the modern day' but anyway yeah i'll just finish my episode and move on
21. THE IPHONE RUBY IS HOLDNIG HAS A HEADPHONE JACK. i want so badly to say that's an iphone 4 but there's like a separation between that and the power button. i also dont have an iphone 4 with me so i cant check it irl :( but anyway the iphone 4 was released in 2010, meaning the evidence is piling up for this part of the story taking place some time around 2010. or maybe i'm looking too deeply into this and should go back to actually watching the episode.
22. this is reminding me i was gonna write a fic specifically about this time period where the twins go to therapy and have to adjust to life without ai, having miyako graduate from fake mom to actual mom, aqua faking being fully recovered from the incident so he'd be released from therapy (fic concept was inspired from him stating this in like vol 6), etc. i never did because i spent like 3 hours researching play therapy and never got anywhere with it.. but maybe...
23. THE KIDS HAVING TO WATCH HER FUNERAL THROUGH THE FUCKING CAR WINDOW... I'M GOING TO KILL MYSELF
24. YESS AQUA NORMALIFICATION COMPLETE
25. AM I INSANE OR IS THAT AKANE? HER HAIR COLOR IS THE SAME BUT IT'S SO SHORT
26. MEM!!!!
Tumblr media
27. AHHH POST CREDITS AI MAKING HER VIDEO FOR THE TWINS "i don't think i'll still be an idol by then" YEAH BUT AT WHAT COST 😭
FINAL THOUGHTS: i liked it alot ^_^ i dont really watch that much anime anymore (not that i watched an incredible amount before, but i am familiar with it) but i really liked this. i think they did a very good job of adapting the first volume! i know the rest of the episodes will be not-film length which does make me a bit sad because i think it would work out well, or at least not badly, if they were. it does also make me really excited for the future, seriously i will actually explode when i see the theater arc in full. cannot wait to see aqua mental breakdowns and ruby evil arc and and and and
the only thing i would've liked is if they could somehow have found a way to incorporate the pre-chapter intro scenes from the manga where they're talking about 15 years of lies, interviews with their pre-school teacher, etc. though both the pre-school teacher and the aforementioned bandana guy appear which may have been their way of doing it? like adding a fun detail for obsessives like myself to point at like 'my god it's those guys from exactly 2 panels in the manga'
tumblr ate my post and erased everything up to #2 while i was writing it and i was about to flip but it turns out that it automatically saves posts while youre writing them now and it was in my drafts safe and sound soooo crisis averted ^_^ anyway those were my thoughts on ep 1

ahh, I did not get that from this thread. My apologies.
Allow me to try to address your actual concerns then:
Yeah, Chloe stans can be prickly. When you have the actual creator denying Prima facie child abuse in his show, and a throng of people gobbling down his words because someone somewhere was mean to them growing up and so Chloe now represents their personal Bully who they want to see tortured *on top of* someone making a 5 yr long self-admitted spite-comic... well... they get defensive.
Some go overboard. I acknowledge that and imagine it sucks. I've had to talk stans down *myself* and I would be ranked as a stan, in as much as I despise child abuse and will always stan the child.
Allow me to hit another point: Consequences. I see this spoken of alot... what consequences? Where do we write this down? What would they do? Even before her father blamed everything he ever did on her and abandoned her into the clutches of her abusive mother while stealing someone else's child... Chloe didn't really have much.
In fact they had to pivot her character just to pretend she *hadn't* faced consequences. Chloe early on actually wanted to be liked. She was arrogant, off putting, and absolutely horrible at interacting with people, but she *did* want to be popular. Adrien's friendship mattered to her. She lost that. What people in school thought of her mattered(rooftop confession to Ladybug for proof) she lost all that. She went from a Queen, to a pest, to a non-entity. She cared about Sabrina's friendship (no it was not a healthy friendship but it was *a* friendship before S4) she lost that.
The only thing S5 Chloe had was her money... which isn't supposed to buy happiness right? and Lila whispering in her ear(much like we saw with Kagami, stoking her worst aspects). There's not much more to take away from her. Y'want her poor? Would that help?
My point here is that 'consequences' aren't meaningful unless they're directed at a solution.
It's funny that there was one point where Chloe WAS going to face actual helpful consequences. When she was caught cheating and was going to be assigned a bunch of makeup work. That's a lot of consequences. That's lost summers and evenings. That's cramming years of schooling into a short period of time. And the show had the gall to have *Marinette* the goddamn protagonist lash out at Ms. Bustier for finally trying to do her job. (She'd had Chloe for multiple years and never noticed. That's gross negligence on the part of an educator)
That's why people are mad at Astruc. That's just an unhinged viewpoint to present to kids.
So, what other consequences? Some community service might be helpful. It might also get her out to show her more of the world. Honestly, I'm not sure if removing her from her parents and putting her into a foster home should be considered 'consequences' or 'A blessing' at this point. (probably Zoe too. Keep her away from Andre!)
One problem with having her face consequences is, then we have to start doling it out to the other people who should face some in this show, and the writing team definitely has zero interest in *that*.
To your next point: I would disagree with you on the 'redemption arc' S2 clearly held all the narrative waypoints of a redemption arc in progress, hell compared to Felix, Andre, Gabriel, and even Shadybug/Claw Noir Chloe has a positively *protracted* redemption arc. 🤣
I will meet you halfway though. I will say that TA never intended to actually *follow through* on the redemption arc. He as just farming it for some buzz/drama/fanpoints on an episodic level and fully intended to tank it later.
I don't think there was an 'aborted' redemption arc. I think, like much of the narrative hooks in ML it was just 'teased' and then ignored when they anted to do something else.
ML is fantastic at forgetting what has been shown previously on screen when it needs to.
I will also state this: I don't give a damn if she has a 'redemption arc'. I want the girl to be shown *getting help* because that's the healthy message to send to the kids. If she's never a hero again, if she never makes friends with the rest of the class, I don't care. I just want what was done to her to be acknowledged, and the fact that *someone* can help to be communicated to any abused kids watching.
Hopefully this addresses your points a little more succinctly, and you feel that I have at least acknowledged your actual positions instead of demonizing you.
One the broader topic of people in the fandom who do not have any concept of proportionality, nuance, negotiation, persuasion, listening, or the difference between understanding and acceptance?
We can fully agree. Though I don't think they're limited to any one particular group of stans. 😂
Mlbtumblr stop acting like Chloe is just shmol and misunderstood and actually acknowledge her issues and the way she treats others without blaming it all on Thomas Asstruck go!

The 50-yard Line
Tumblr media
Masterlist
written for day 7 of @elorcanweek2022
a/n: not edited, sorry if it sucks- i’m trying to get back into the groove of writing. i had this sitting in my drafts for months and elorcan week finally pushed me to finish. also side note cause i just wanted to tell someone: i actually wrote this on paper to get the ideas flowing and it kinda worked!! but it was a pain in the ass to type so i don’t know how i feel about the method. anyways, hope you enjoy :)
wordcount: 2.8k
~ ~ ~
“Salvaterre! Whitethorn! Get your asses on the line!”
Lorcan Salvaterre rolled his eyes at the senior screaming instructions: Erawan Valg. The guy had it all: the ladies, the popularity, the money, not to mention he was the captain of the football team (but did it count if it was because his dad was the coach? Lorcan didn’t think so). But, Lorcan mused to himself, he’d rather be a broke virgin loser than be stuck with a personality as vile as that.
Lorcan wobbled as he stood up from where he was taking his water break between sprints, feeling like a newborn fawn on a ship caught in a storm. Fuck, he would definitely need an ice bath when he got home. Erawan was not taking it easy on the rest of the team today. Maybe he had some issues with his daddy dearest, the coach. Seeing how hard it was considering it was only week two of the season, Lorcan couldn’t say he was particularly excited for the rest of the season, no matter how much he loved playing.
Football was his way out of this small town. Rowan may have had the brains but for Lorcan, he honestly couldn’t give a shit about academics. That was definitely not his calling, as made evident by his grades. People would always say he couldn’t amount to anything, a foster kid bouncing around in the system, house to house. At least Rowan had a future, they said. Well, he was determined to prove them wrong.
Rowan and Lorcan had been adopted together at 10 after staying together in the system since they were 6, both boys facing traumatic childhoods with Lorcan and his substance-addicted mother and Rowan with his emotionally and physically abusive aunt. Gavriel had adopted them. They would mock him, asking how much of a family could they be, a real family anyway, but Lorcan didn’t give a shit what people thought. He was happy, Rowan was happy, and his little family of three was happy, the third being Gavriel, their adoptive father. Apparently, the man had grown up in foster care as well and after the death of his wife and son, he decided to comply with his late wife’s wishes for him to adopt a child to give them a loving home and family, things both she and her husband didn’t have growing up. Gavriel saw Lorcan and Rowan and had seen himself in them, at least, that’s what it said in his journal. Lorcan hadn’t meant to snoop one day, he was just looking for a spare notebook he could use, but the juicy tidbit of gossip was just too good not to share with Rowan. Though Rowan pretended to be dismayed as to how Lorcan got the information, he knew that on the inside, the little gossiper would be having a field day at the minefield of information. They knew they could talk to Gavriel about anything, it was just more exciting this way.
That had been 6 years ago when little Lorcan’s biggest concern was if Gavriel would return them to the foster home like an ill-fitting pair of jeans. Now, his concerns were football and college. Bemoaning the hour of ‘optional’ practice they surely had left, Lorcan turned towards the bleachers, suddenly distracted by the recognizably familiar pair of blood-red converse. There was only one person at this school with those shoes. Shaky legs and exhaustion forgotten, Lorcan jogged up to Erawan and his right-hand man Duke Perrington to ask for a break to use the bathroom. Sent off with a careless wave and some crude joke Lorcan didn’t care to hear, he turned with a huge grin that was an accurate representation of how his heart felt at seeing Elide Lochan.
They had met at one of Aelin Galathynius’ birthday ragers, Lorcan only tagging along for his brother Rowan, the hopeless idiot crushing on Aelin. Lorcan had been in the corner, ignoring the piss-poor beer he was handed and lamenting his decision in letting Rowan drag him along when that bastard had left him for Aelin after she batted her lashes at him. Elide had been looking for a way to avoid Erawan, landing herself on his lap with a hurriedly whispered ‘Please play along’ before pressing her lips to his. They kissed awkwardly for a while, Lorcan only putting his hands on her thighs when she placed them there before Elide was sure Erawan had gotten the message. They escaped to one of the spare bedrooms upstairs to further cement their lie for Erawan with an explanation from Elide and they’d spent the rest of the night talking to each other. They had had more in common than Lorcan had originally thought when passing her in the halls. She was sharp, funny, and so unbelievably gorgeous. Elide had asked that they take it slow and casually after Lorcan accidentally blurted out a rushed ‘Willyoubemygirlfriend?” but Hellas damn him if it wasn’t the hardest thing in the world for him. He should’ve known then that he was falling hard, and fast.
Lorcan ran behind the bleachers as fast as he could when he left the captain’s vision and was rewarded by a short but sweet kiss from Elide. They were quickly cut off by Lorcan’s breathless pants, something he swore was from the running, not from seeing his crush. Elide took one last hit of her joint before putting it out, all too aware of Lorcan’s aversion to all drugs and substances after both of his parents died of accidental overdoses. Granted, it had been crack, not marijuana prescribed for her bad ankle, that Lorcan’s parents had taken, but Elide never wanted to do anything that made Lorcan uncomfortable. She was developing a soft spot for her fuck-buddy, actually.
“Hey sport,” Elide muttered in a husky voice that made Lorcan lose his mind every time.
“Hi, El-” Lorcan started to greet her before being cut off by the taste of her cherry lip gloss on her lips as she pressed them to his. A scent of cinnamon and elderberries that was so uniquely Elide enveloped him. The hour that had felt so long when he was conditioning now was over with a blink of an eye as Elide and Lorcan lost themselves in each other. Hot and sweaty from their make-out session and the late August heat, they were startled back to reality with the clattering of cleated feet plodding up the bleachers. Lorcan raised his head in alarm before cursing as he clonked his head on the bleachers. Elide let out a small giggle at the comical sight of a 6’5 (and growing) Lorcan squished under the bleachers with her 5’1 self.
Lorcan stepped out from their secret make-out spot and offered his hand to Elide to help her up when he was met with the leering grins of Erawan and Duke. Those fuckers. Elide led Lorcan away with a scoff towards the two seniors when Erawan’s voice echoed after them.
“Wow. That’s real slutty of you ‘lide. First that cheerleader witch, now the junior loser? What’s next, the trash? Seems that you’re getting pretty damn close to getting there.”
Elide growled, the sound intimidating yet sexy to Lorcan. “Fuck off, Valg. I don’t want to have to tell you again.”
“You could find yourself a real man here, Elide,” Erawan ignored her, digging deeper into his little stupidity pit. “I’ll be waiting for the day you regain your senses. We could rule the school.”
She rolled her eyes in response before continuing to drag Lorcan away with her, a storm cloud gathering above the both of them. Elide didn’t deserve the shit she got for not wanting to hook up with the biggest douchebag at their school, Lorcan thought. Unfortunately, Elide ran in similar circles with Erawan because of her friends, the icy head cheerleader Manon Blackbeak, the aforementioned ‘cheerleader bitch’ as well as Aelin Galathynius, her cousin and the rising freshman star of the soccer team from what he had heard. Combined with her status as a senior and a reputation for being one of the hottest yet hardest to get with girls at their school, according to a poll taken by the newspaper club at least, that meant she frequently ran into Erawan often at parties and therefore came face to face with his horrid attempts to woo her by talking down to her. Like Lorcan said earlier, he’d rather have nothing in the eyes of Erawan than have a personality like his.
Elide pulled Lorcan off to the side into an alcove between buildings where no one could see them. As a habit, she frantically pulled out a pre-rolled joint to weed before taking a long puff. Lost in his detailed imagining of revenge against Erawan (beating the shit out of him) on Elide’s behalf, not that she needed him to, Lorcan was startled back to reality with the smell of weed. With a groan, he pulled the joint out of an unsuspecting Elide’s hand before smashing it under his foot. Already braced for the harsh feedback, he was  not surprised when the verbal lashing started.
“What the fuck was that for, asshole?”
Lorcan narrowed his eyes. “I asked you not to smoke that shit around me, El, and you agreed. Besides, you’re welcome for helping you not drop dead.”
“Oh my gods. We’re not doing this again. I’m not going to fucking die. It’s prescribed you big gargantuan moran. Mind your own business,” Elide muttered in a tone akin to the growl from before as she balled her fists up.
“Hell, I’m sorry for caring about your well-being. I thought we were friends. Or a thing. Or whatever?” Lorcan was met with Elide’s dick shriveling glare, as he liked to call it. Oh shit.
“Well then don’t fucking care about me. We’re not friends, we’re fuck-buddies. That’s all it is,” Elide spat out, the escalation of their argument surprising both of them. “I’ve had enough of this toxic male bullshit for today. Leave. Me. Alone.”
Lorcan scoffed bitterly, hurt by her sudden outburst. He hadn’t been trying to fight her, he genuinely was concerned for her but maybe this wasn’t the best way to show that. Whatever, he wasn’t about to cave now. “Well if that’s what you want, I’ll see you around.” Lorcan turned and walked out of the school towards where Gavriel’s car was waiting, forcing himself not to look back at the girl he had fallen in love with as he took each step.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .*:☆゚. ───
It had been about three weeks since ‘the incident’, as Lorcan liked to call it, and Elide still hadn’t called or texted. Or even looked in his general direction. Lorcan was more ashamed of himself than anything, trailing her like a lost puppy and taking long detours from class to class just to get a glimpse of her. He suspected the silence on her end had something to do with him labeling their relationship rather than their argument, especially with her known aversion to relationships. But then again, he could be wrong. Fuck, he just wasn’t sure anymore.
Miraculously, as if summoned by his tortured thoughts, Lorcan’s phone lit up with a text from a number he knows all too well.
my uncle left last night- come over and talk?
Lorcan typed, deleted, and re-typed different responses too many times as he tries to formulate a response that says ‘I wasn’t obsessing over you or chasing you like a lost puppy but I did think of you a little” while still being cool and suave. He gave up eventually and just settled on a simple ‘k’ before sending it off. Lorcan sighed. The things you do when you’re whipped for people.
Jolting out of bed to put on a pair of sweats, Lorcan jogged through their one-story house to the key rack. He cursed when he found the keys to the Range Rover he and Rowan shared missing. As Lorcan heard the unmistakable sound of an engine starting, Lorcan cursed again, letting out a few choice words. Today was Whitethorn’s date with Galathynius. Lorcan normally loved Aelin, Rowan’s girlfriend of 4 months after he finally brought up the courage and balls to ask her on a date. The ‘bitch queen’, as he nicknamed her affectionately, could give insults as good as she got and the two quickly became as thick and thieves after a short period of mutual antagonizing. Aelin made his brother happy and she was like a sister to him but Hellas be damned if she didn’t have the worst timing. This was his chance to finally confess to Elide how he felt after three weeks of agony and he was stuck with no ride to Elide’s place after an invitation there.
There would be no other choice than to run. Gavriel took his own car to work and he refused to ask Rowan to come back and drop him off. Now that he remembered, the bastard had been so excited for the date today, fucking humming some love song that had pushed Lorcan deep into his wallowing in misery. No matter how desperately he wanted to see Elide quickly, he couldn’t do that to his brother.
Half an hour, 2 bottles of water, and a lot of breaks later, Lorcan was finally at Elide’s grandiose house (or was it called a mansion?). Lorcan shot a text out to let Elide know he’s here so she doesn’t attack him thinking he’s an intruder before lifting the potted plant next to the door to find her spare key. As he walked up the familiar stairs where he had fucked Elide when her parents were away, he grinned at the memory before refocusing to find Elide and talk about whatever she wanted to talk about. He peered through the rooms he thought she would be in, before poking his head through Elide’s bedroom door last. Bingo.
Elide is furiously texting someone with lightning-fast thumbs as she’s hunched over her phone when Lorcan found her. He knocked on her door to let her know he was there and her head snaps up so quickly that he heard her neck crack. Lorcan winced. That had to hurt. Elide ignored the painful feeling of her back protesting her strained position to tell Lorcan the three words weighing on her since the day he walked away from their argument. Granted it had been because she told him to, but Elide knew it would kill her if he walked away from her like that again. Her heart was too involved for her to not care.
Lorcan began to speak, the words coming out too quickly to be actually considered words when Elide interrupts him.
“Lorcan, just please let me get this out. I know you care for me, and I care for you too, but I want more. I- I love you. A lot. I couldn’t stop thinking about you after our argument. I’m sorry for what I said that day, I didn’t mean a single thing I said. We are more than fuck buddies. You’re my best friend, and I love you. I felt so bad about how I lashed out but you were really pissing me off, but all I could think about as you left was the fact that I don’t care if you piss me off every single day for the rest of our lives. I just want to spend it with you.”
“Lochan. I don’t know what to say..” Lorcan trailed off, pouting before he grinned. “You stole my dramatic love confession. I’ve only loved you since the day we first met. I realized it that day during practice when I saw your converse from the 50-yard line. I’d never been so excited to see someone as I’m excited to see you every single day and all I could think was ‘Damn, I could do this for the rest of my life’. I’m sorry for the shit I said too, and for walking away. I promise you that I will never walk away from you again. We’ll always solve shit before leaving from now on, okay?”
Elide’s face went from worried to euphoric in a second. She threw her arms around him and hugged him with more strength than Lorcan thought she had. As Lorcan let out a booming laugh, Elide shrieked in surprise as he spun her around like she was his queen. Lorcan had never been so fucking happy in his entire life. The moment she told him that she loved him, it was like a missing puzzle piece in his heart finally clicked into place.
Maybe that 50-yard line when Lorcan had realized he loved Elide had something to do with all the magic he was feeling. He’d have to plan something there to commemorate it. Maybe a promposal? That was hilarious, Lorcan thought to himself. If you had told him a year ago, hell even a month ago, that he would be excited to go to prom, he would have laughed at you. But now? Now, he’d be ready for anything with Elide by his side.

Happy Pride Shana! 🏳️‍🌈 I love all your fics - so dealers choice!
Liz is eleven the first time she goes to take out the trash and finds Michael Guerin digging through their dumpster.
He takes off running as soon as he sees her and she's too surprised to call out after him.
He glares at her in school the next day but she pretends like she doesn't notice. That night, she leaves a carton of still warm food on top of the dumpster and just hopes that he's coming back for it. If nothing else, he doesn't glare at her in class anymore.
This goes on for a week before her father catches on to what she's doing. She tells him the truth when he asks, and his face goes very adult and serious and he gently says to her that he'll handle taking out the trash from now on.
Two days later he's cleaning out the tiny room he uses for an office and moving a twin bed into there and the day after that Michael shows up to their dinner table with narrow distrustful eyes and a trashbag full of clothes.
They can't foster him legally, considering her parents, but as long as his on paper foster parents can continue to collect a check without any fuss they don't care where he is. So Michael stays.
Liz sits next to him at dinner and walks with him to the bus stop and teaches him how to brush his hair and his teeth the right way, just like her mama and papa taught her, because he does it but not right and he doesn't say anything to her but he brushes his teeth longer and uses a comb on his wet hair and lets their shoulders knock against one another while they make their way to the bus stop.
Mama doesn't seem to have much of an opinion about this boy in her house. Liz is more grateful about that than she is disappointed.
Rosa pretends not to like him for about three days, which is when Liz starts crying because she doesn't their homework and it makes her papa sad when she asks so she just doesn't ask anymore and Rosa hates school but she's patting her back trying to make everything okay when Michael sits next to her and slowly, haltingly explains all things that don't make sense to her until they do.
Rosa gives in after that, after Michael made her stop crying when she couldn't, and starts complaining about having two little siblings annoying her all the time. She ends up being so busy keeping up with their antics that she stops trying to spy on their mother whenever she leaves, which seems like a good thing.
"I'm probably older than you," Liz tells him, "so that makes you our little brother."
"Probably doesn't count," he protests, but he's smiling too.
Liz is the one to notice first, to figure it out, and by the time Michael gives in and confesses that he's an alien - a real one, not like their parents - she already knows. Hearing that Max and Isobel are too does come as more of a surprise.
Michael starts putting Ortecho as his last name on all his schoolwork and no one stops him. Liz and Michael become nearly as close as Max and Isobel, who make themselves a near permanent fixture in the diner once Liz knows the truth.
Liz starts teasing Michael about having a crush on her best friend Alex in high school. (Both Alex and Michael worry about being gay at different times, but Papa already has practice with that ever since Maria and Rosa started dating). He shoots right back about Max having a crush on her, which is a suitably distracting thought that she forgets to annoy him for the next several months and finds out they're dating when she walks into her brother's room to find him sucking face with Alex, which she really didn't need to see.
Kyle is a jerk for about a year, so she dumps him and starts dating Max. Then he and Alex become friends again and he's way less of jerk and she has several small crises about it up until she notices Kyle and Max are giving each other the kind of looks that Michael and Alex used to and she solves her problem but just deciding that she and Max should date Kyle. Several people tell her that it'll never work, but she graduates with two boyfriends who are dating each other and her, which is very fun for her because she loves proving other people wrong.
Rosa splits her time working between the diner and the Pony with Maria and Mimi. She and her brother and all their friends commit to going to college in at least the same tri-state area, and all of them drift back to Roswell slowly. She and Kyle get jobs at the same hospital while Max works on his novel and jokes about being a kept man, even though he was the one working the most to pay their bills while Kyle was in medical school and Liz was in graduate school.
Alex and Michael get engaged, surprising no one, while Michael pursues his career in agricultural science. Alex starts discovering some worrying things about his father, which makes him sign up for the air force to dig deeper against everyone's protests. Isobel and Gregory start dating, surprising no one, although she and Michael start making a lot of jokes about Manes men that make Alex and Gregory turn interesting shades of red.
Maria and Rosa buy the Pony and then take a trip to Vegas where they drunkenly elope all in the same weekend. Papa is pulled between furious and elated and gives Alex and Michael a twenty minute long lecture about having a proper wedding.
Alex find out about Caufield and works with Gregory and everyone to free all the aliens and shut the project down. Alex manages to do that while getting his father court martialed for running an illegal operation and not releasing the aliens to live amongst society as the Caufield operation was ordered to do fifty years ago. Several very important people are quietly court martialed when this comes to light.
They meet Nora who tells them all the truth of their home planet and why the left. She and several other aliens go to the dessert and take care of Jones and a man called Noah, who she says never should have been on the ship in the first place.
Liz successfully sponsors her father so he attends Alex and Michael's wedding as an American citizen. He and Nora sit side by side and watch their son get married to the man he loves.

✗✗               BOTANICAL HEADCANONS: ACCEPTING @stevenharrington asked  ❛ acanthus, anemone, belladonna, daffodil, gladiolus, peony, sage  ❜
ACANTHUS: Is your muse deceptive, or willing to lie or deceive to achieve certain means? Why or why not ?
Sarah has no qualms about lying. Most of her adolescence was spent lying by omission or straight up deceiving her classmates to hide what her home life was like and make herself more popular. Lying isn’t a compulsion for her, she’s not naturally deceptive. In fact, she’s often brutally honest, but she won’t hesitate to lie if she feels it’s necessary and she doesn’t feel bad about doing it.
Lying is a matter of survival for her a lot of times. It’s what gives her the peace to be able to escape into her popularity to avoid her home life, its what keeps her and her brothers out of the foster care system. Lying to herself and pretending nothing gets to her has gotten her through all the neglect and crushing burden that never should have been placed on her.
ANEMONE: How does your muse view the world; as a cruel & unforgiving place, a land full of wonders, or something in - between? Where does that world view come from (what experiences, life lessons, etc.)?
The world is a shitty, unfair place. It’s full of people who get away with bad things and good people don’t get what they deserve. But at the same time there is beautiful things in the world. Life is hard and it will wear you down, but there are little moments of joy that you use to carry you through it. Which is why she indulges herself and parties as hard as she does. Life sucks so why deny yourself anything that makes you forget about that for a while?
She’s just developed this kind of mindset over the years. I don’t want to keep saying her home life sucks and belabor the point, but when you live in uncertainty all you really have are those few moments where you can escape from it. Whether that be a good meal, or a new record, or getting so drunk. You have to find those moments because otherwise life is too unbearable to keep living.
BELLADONNA: How does your muse respond to silence? Do they take comfort in soundlessness, or seek to fill the void with noise?
Sarah has to fill the void with noise. She can’t stand to sit in silence, especially on her own. She often has headphones on listening to music when she’s alone because what? She’s going to be alone with her own thoughts? Hell no. Comfortable silences are a rarity for her, shared only with a select few.
DAFFODIL: Is your muse one to be loyal in relationships, or are they likely to quickly move from one bond to another?
One of Sarah’s better qualities is that she is incredibly loyal. If you genuinely connect with her and earn her trust she’s not just a friend for life, but she’s a protector and a caregiver. She takes care of the people who she cares about, which includes standing by their side no matter what.
GLADIOLUS: Describe a moment from your muse’s life that they will never forget.
She was nine and in the car with her mother. She couldn’t remember where they were going. To the grocery store maybe? The radio was too loud and even from the back seat, far out of view of the speedometer she knew they were going too fast. It wasn’t a surprise when the blue and red lights over took them and finally forced her mom to pull off to the side of the road, but it still scared her. School had taught her that cops were good, they were supposed to help you, but she had a sickening weight settle in her stomach as she watched the cop approach the driver side window. Everything was a blur after that, she was never sure if it was the hazy nature of childhood memory or if she just chose to forget. The next thing she knew her mom yelling with the cops as they handcuffed her while another cop pick her up and put her in the back of the second cop car. She did remember starting to cry in the backseat, hiccupping and struggling to breathe until she was too tired to keep going. Her mom was arrested, when she was older she found out it was on a possession charge, and Sarah was moved into a foster home until her grandparents were able to collect her. She wasn’t there long, but she’ll never forget the feeling of helplessness the whole situation left her with. The cops that tore apart her life, the unforgiving foreignness of the foster home, the anger at her mother while simultaneously yearning for her. It all carved a deep scar into Sarah’s mind, allowing a resentment for authority to fester.
PEONY: What would a  ‘ happy life ’  look like in your muse’s eyes?
Answered here!
SAGE: What is your muse’s legacy? What do they want to be remembered for & what might they actually be remembered for?
Sarah wanted her legacy to be of someone worthwhile. She was never able to figure out exactly what she wanted to do with her life, but she did know she wanted it to be something people looked back on and could never say she wasted it. Not like her parents slowly dying in their shitty hometown. She wanted to be remembered as someone people loved to be around, that she made everyone feel alive.
After her death, it’s funny how quickly people move on. All the popularity and friends didn’t matter in the end. People don’t want to remember a tragedy like what fell over Craven Creek. The good goes hand in hand with the bad and it’s easier to throw them both out and move on. Everyone tries not to think about Sarah. It’s too uncomfortable. Her death is too much of a reflection of the culture of Craven Creek to have allowed something like the Death Mask to become what it did. Too much of a reminder that their quiet little suburban lives can be torn apart at anytime.
Sarah’s legacy isn’t of a life well lived. It’s of a life that was hardly lived at all.

Boys hc’s feats Diaspro
Riven
Riven Cassios was born to two Omega prisoners. What surprised everyone, because staying healthy enough to carry out a pregnancy on a planet that sucks your magic is... Obviously the Rocalucce Council keeps an eye on the planet, they took him out of there because no child would pay because his parents, and he has been in foster homes, although it doesn't last long since the requirements for his adoption were more strict than most -which in the long run the Council would realize was COUNTERPRODUCTIVE for his character-. That is what Darcy detects and why the high spheres are somewhat "permissive" with him.
His mother died giving birth, it was already miraculous that she lived so long and ‘bout his father I think I'm going to kill him too, maybe. The father I assure you would be love him (he called Riven to himself Daru, his gift) thought was not his initial idea, the mother always saw him as an experiment (she was a witch who followed the Ancenstresses). Ohm, also in his blood there are dark elves and giants.
Riven surname is actually the name of the galaxy where he was born or a derivation of it, as is common for orphans. So the boy knows NOTHING about the above.
Timmy and Riven are the only specialists who have passed the full course at Fonterossa, without skips. In the end they bond about it. Timmy gives him a recommendation to work as a part-time mechanic at Magix (good boy face, he knows how to use it)
Timmy
Timeus “tshhhh, it’s Timmy.... i’m not my grandfather” fulfills the physique requisits as much as any other specialist, but it is true that his physique and abilities, adapted to the distance, give him a more "feline" air.
He is also the one who wakes up at night and moves silently, scaringthe rest of the squad if they wake up unexpectedly.
His glasses are for both sight and Aura Vision. His parents are rich enough to pay for an operation, but since he would have to wear glasses for his ability anyway, why? Practical guy.
And the glasses make people look down on him, something that when his self-esteem is high and he’s being rational and cunning he knows it’s wonderful, although many others times may hurt. He is mostly leprechaum with something human.
Nex
Nex is still a Paladin born in Lymphea and with blood of literally ALL races. He adapts well to any planet, although not its people at first. His race mix makes his face “charismatic”, like always draw attention even if people don’t know very well why they are draw.
His ability is Delay Sleep. It allows him to hold over his need to sleep for days without going crazy or losing physical capacity or needing many days to recover (he can stay awake for 5 or more days, sleep 8-10 hours and go back to being his usual self). Sometimes he does not control this well and has plenty of energy in need of drop but he is the one who has the most control of his ability.
One of his parents spent time in Rocalucce Fortress as a "guest" so at times he feels like he has something to prove.
Roy
Coming from Andros, most of the population are merpeople with a few elves and humans. which avoids the 100% aquatic population. Roy, unlike Aisha is mostly human-elf with a bit of merpeople in a grandgrandgrand level. One of his parents comes from one of the colonies on the moons of Andros and he was born there although they moved almost immediately.
Roy’s paladin ability being the canon “Triton Aura” used to breathe underwater. That and learning to swim and drive all kinds of water vehicles was what made him feel "adapted" to Andros. But he always try to be useful.
He only became a Paladin at the beginning of season 6, and it was visiting him that the season began. He’s bi but he thinks of himself as straight.
Nabu
I plead guilty to liking Nabu even though I shipped Aisha with Flora and Nex. So I have a hard time thinking about him. Except, EVERY time I try to think of something. EVERY TIME. Rapunzel. So, he will never cut his hair.
But with an island instead of a tower and a babysitter (male and wizard) more dumbledoor (not, actually more like Newt Scamander mentor like).
Sometimes he misses out on some "social customs/things/normalcies" whatever is called due to his little dealing with people. He may seem naive or that don't understand sarcasm. He understands and learns quickly, but people were very respectful to him and there are things he is not used to. 1/2 merpeople 1/4 half elf 1/4 human as both of his parents are half merpeople.
He likes to swim as much as any merpeople, but they didn't let him do it much because they were afraid he would go away or lost, so he usually went off "to the heights", going up to the rooftops and things like that.
Helia
Helia is trans but keeps his first name as chosen name which I don’t understand. Also he has formally tried study practically everything he wanted. Specialist, Paladin, Wizard (of Threads). Painter.
He can't make up his mind, his family hurries him just to STOP making them dizzy and spend a few years with everything -and actually end a single “major” choice- he wants to experience, that he has a very long life and can dedicate a few decades to Everything and they can support them. Well, more or less, but he was vip pass to all these options because family connections.
Long story about Sky, Brandon and Dia.
Sky, Brandon and Diaspro's first meeting was a show. Has it all. Costumes, lies. Confusion. Kidnapping. And that is why Diaspro insists on the wedding (I would like to mention that although I don’t know her romantic orientation yet surely bi or lesbian, here, Dia is asexual. And Sky is non-binary but his parents do not approve so go for he/him to avoid problem with them. And here our story begins)
A bit of background. Brandon actually hails from Isis, the son of the military and was chosen by the whimsical chibi!Diaspro as a playmate and future personal guard (because then she believed that touching children gave "lice" and her character and age did not have the 18like wall of royal education, then in a random encounter he called her among many things what Dia's mind translated in a strange way "uncracked geode", which is a double-edged compliment in Isis that many would not accept from strangers but she liked it). Rarely they would end up becoming friends in the end. When the series begins, Brandon and Diaspro keep up with calls, which will prevent Dia's reaction with Bloom on the one hand.
On a visit (officially only from the kings of Erakyon to to the kings of Isis) for the children to get to know each other, somehow, they all ended up happily dressing up, with Sky and Dia looking like two pretty princesses and Brandon assessing whether his dress would be green or yellow because Diaspro insisted that she and Sky had already taken the blue and red and so it would be more "thematic".
Here began the first of many attacks on Sky's head, because before it had begun to be rumored (true) that Erendor had fertility problems (btw his race dwarf-high elf and Samara is leprechaum-high elf, Sky gots mostly high elf part). When they came in and saw two girls and a boy, Brandon, not the highest IQ, but one of the wisest of his team and definitely the best fighter, played along so he ended up pretending to be Sky (also helps that his hair colors looks like Erendor) Everything worked out well in the end, although Brandon ended up as Sky's squire (better for him, worse for Diaspro), and Diaspro made Sky promise that he owed her a big favor. Anyway they grew up over the years in friendship and they both knew they were not of each other's true love interest, but, they could put up with each other (because that's what royalty does).
Sky and Diaspro have a sonorous (affectionate) war over Sky's hair to annoy/exasperate Brandon. Diaspro always complains that he doesn't grow it and it would look great then. Sky says that he is fine as with his hair at it is (it's actually Erendor's thing). The soft part of Diaspro that she doesn't usually show off has taught Sky many ways to style his hair and subtly put on makeup to look more feminine if he wants to.
How I am amused by that image from wikipedia and that Diaspro entered Sky's guard so quickly. Another headcanon is that Diaspro would sometimes change her appearance a bit and go into Sky's guard to be with Brandon to annoy him and Sky, when Brandon has to talk about her without giving details, she is simply "his sister Charbonne" (she hates that alias). They were discovered when she was 15 years old but she had already trained and the royal families considered it a sign to formalize the engagement since “they search each other” (people only sees what they wants).
The Diaspro family is not good, first Brandon was a shield (emotional) because as a child they were not “that” bad and then Sky joined him (physically and politically), handling things with Bloom so like that was not a good idea when the floor was full of cracked bottles.
... omg i’m sorry you three i’m sorry what I did to you
Also, Brandon's ability as a green user is very interesting and helps with this a lot. I temporally call it “Keypoint Warning” and I like it a lot, it's like a "tic" that tells him "be careful, what you say, what you do now, even the smallest thing could change everything for youself (for better or for worse)”. He actually has a scar on his forehead (not a lightning bolt) that his hairstyle hides after “that” day but a little less fine on the words and the kidnappers might have broken his mouth so... His parents have been cured (spoiler: no) of heart attack since then.

All too soon, two very familiar colors filled the back of the van. Alex’s heart immediately submerged into the dark ocean it always went to in despair, knowing they were all screwed this time. He could already see Bobby pulling onto the shoulder - they didn’t need the sound of sirens to tell them what was up. Willie still seemed like he wasn’t all present, and Alex squeezed his fingers and shook his hands to bring him back to the now. They had really hoped it wouldn’t happen. None of the guys could’ve anticipated the alarm, or that Caleb would be in town when they definitely thought he was gone, or that everything would go wrong.
Not knowing didn’t matter, though. Hours later, all five of them sat inside a holding cell at the LAPD, heads bowed as none of them dared to make eye contact with each other. It was early morning by the time all of them had been processed, and they were all varying levels of exhausted. The time passed at a frustratingly slow pace, although there was no way of telling what time it was. Thankfully, they were the only ones in the cell at the time; if there had been other inmates it would’ve sent Alex’s nerves past their threshold. A guard sat just outside a doorway to the rest of the station while another sat directly outside the cell.
Alex was tempted to wrap his arm around Willie’s shoulders, since he remained dissociated, but the eye contact from the officer sitting across from them was too unsettling. He didn’t like the thought that came through his mind - the one that made him feel like an even worse criminal, even though he knew he wasn’t. Stubbornly, Alex fought to push the feeling away, and settled for putting a hand on Willie’s shoulder. There was almost no reaction, but then Alex saw his brown eyes flicker in his direction and that was all the peace he needed.
“It’s my fault, you guys,” Reggie murmured, barely peering up from where his head hung dejectedly. “I was just so caught up in getting back - ”
“It’s not your fault, Reggie,” Bobby interrupted him gently. “He was waiting for us.”
Luke didn’t speak. His eyes couldn’t leave his empty hands. Alex almost couldn’t look at him; it was a sad image.
They had all been so sure that Caleb was finally out of LA, never spoke about their plans at the studio, had been so careful about the way they acted around him - there was no way. There was just no way that he could’ve been so ready to show up just as they were trying to get the master copies of their album out of his hands. And worse, now Alex had dragged Willie into it, and the guilt mounted even higher from there.
A female officer approached the cell with a clipboard, not bothering to look up from the page she had her eyes glued to.
“Bobby Wilson?”
Bobby raised his head at the sound of his name.
“You have an older brother here to pick you up,” she said monotonously. “You’re free to go.”
The door to the cell was opened and Bobby made his way out in slight confusion. He threw a conflicted look back toward Luke.
“Did he say if I was taking anyone with me?”
“He came for Bobby Wilson and Bobby Wilson only.” Her tone shut down any further questions that he had. Looking back apologetically, his shoulders slumped as Luke shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it,” Luke said, although not as assuring as he likely wanted to be. “I’ll be fine.”
Alex watched as Bobby’s eyes lingered for a few seconds on Reggie, who was still hunched forward with his gaze fixed on the concrete floor. It seemed so uncharacteristic for him, but Alex understood he was probably shutting down at the mere thought of returning home. The emotions ran high enough in his home as it was. They hadn’t really been given options as for who got called when they’d been brought to the police department. Finally, Bobby turned and took the car keys and wallet that had been confiscated and disappeared.
Luke moved closer to Reggie and put a hand on his back, and he began muttering something to him. They were just far enough away that Alex couldn’t properly hear what they were saying.
“Sheldon’s gonna be so freaked out when I get home,” Willie spoke suddenly. Alex turned to see him finally looking around the cell, fully aware of his surroundings.
“Hopefully he’ll be okay,” he assured. “They can only hold us for up to twelve hours; that’s what they said.”
Willie looked at him and nodded, eyes once again immediately training themselves onto empty space.
“How are you doing?” Alex asked carefully. Willie didn’t move his eyes, but he appeared to be brought back into focus again.
“I just have all these images running in my mind,” he said. “Things he did. Things I did. He decided to pretend I was dead rather than deal with my existence. It’s like he was already trying to bury me by taking away any connection to my past. Sometimes I wonder what I was like before the accident. What if I deserved this?”
For a minute, Alex merely sat with his jaw agape, as if he’d been slapped upon hearing what Willie was saying.
“Wha- ? No. Willie, that can’t be right,” he started. “You couldn’t possibly deserve any of this, no matter what happened in the past.”
Willie shook his head.
“I was in the foster system, Alex,” he argued. “From the few things I know, I was passed around a little bit. Caleb was someone who took difficult kids; he had a reputation with social services. I wanted him to be the bad guy because I got a taste of something better, but when I look around, Alex? I have no one to call. Not even family.”
It was the first time Alex had seen tears well up in his eyes since the night at the Stratosphere, but he felt that any comfort he wanted to offer wouldn’t be accepted. All he could do was look back at this beautiful boy who deserved far more than he believed, brow furrowed in silent protest. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, Willie had a point. There was a possibility that the guys’ dislike of the man had become biased based on Willie’s story, as unintentional as it may have been. Still, Alex refused to believe that it was because Willie was the real menace.
“Look, we may never know the truth,” he started, trying to look at him as directly as he could. “But I’m the one who got you here; I take responsibility for that. And sometimes having someone to call doesn’t mean they’re there for you.”
Willie gave him a look that was mixed, but he mostly read concern. Frankly, Alex wasn’t sure what his own parents’ reaction would be, but he didn’t dare hope for any sort of understanding.
“Reggie Peters?” The same female officer approached the cell again with her clipboard.
Reggie turned away from his conversation with Luke, sucking in a nervous breath.
“Your mother is here to take you home; you’re free to go.”
Pressing his lips together anxiously, Reggie simply bowed his head as he was escorted out the same way Bobby had been. Luke promptly spread himself out along the bench, pulling his beanie over his face.
For a while, Alex let his mind wander as he kept his hand resting on Willie’s shoulder. What Willie had said made him want to reevaluate the whole situation with Caleb. It wasn’t that he thought Willie was as bad as he said he was, but it stood to be examined. He remembered the difference between his short first impression of the man at the diner, and the second time he’d seen him. He even remembered his own reasoning - how it was possible that Caleb could come off as so severe while running a diner but maintain such charisma while serving guests.
A pang of memory also came as Alex had noted he didn’t seem like a straight man and after months of actually working with him there was even greater evidence toward that notion. It had been what made Alex want to trust him in the beginning. Finding an adult figure who offered him a break from being constantly vigilant about the way he naturally felt had been a blessing. Not even Alex could ignore that. However, something still told him that just because they had that in common didn’t make Caleb trustworthy.
“Luke Patterson?” All three boys looked up in surprise when they heard the officer’s voice a third time. Luke clutched his beanie to his chest, confused most of all as he sat up from the bench. Instead of announcing who had come for him, the officer stepped aside as two familiar faces came toward the cell.
Julie Molina and her Aunt Victoria looked at the boys, both with stern expressions.
“Julie?” Luke uttered in surprise, standing up from the bench and slowly moving toward her.
Folding her arms, Julie had her eyes fixed on Luke with a brand of disappointment that appeared to burn like acid. She flashed the same look toward Alex for a moment and he was duly stung. Luke could make all the sad, pleading puppy faces he wanted, but ultimately was struck dumb by knowing he had no room to speak.
“We have a lot to talk about,” Julie told him, the chastising tone not to be missed. Luke’s face fell and he hung his head, looking back toward Alex with a similar apologetic look as Bobby had given.
Alex caught Victoria also looking at him. It was still stern, but more in telling him she was let down. Why it compounded his already guilty feelings even more, he couldn’t understand. Her expression changed, however, as she looked at Willie next to him, as though she were trying to recall where she recognized him. Immediately forgetting his guilt for a moment, Alex perked up and subtly pointed a finger toward him, mouthing the name “Willie!” to her. She looked at him incredulously, and it was a shame the officer was already escorting them out with Luke, because he was sure she had questions.
“Was that Julie’s mom?” Willie asked. Startled, Alex looked at him and cleared his throat.
“Ah, no, that was her aunt,” he told him. “Her mom is still in the hospital.”
“Oh,” Willie replied, casting he gaze to where they had left with a look of empathy. “That really sucks.”
“Yeah,” Alex agreed.
For the second surprise that night (morning? Alex couldn’t tell), and for the fourth time, the female officer returned.
“William Taylor?”
Willie looked at Alex in utter perplexity, and then back at the officer.
“Um…” he began saying. Before he finished, Flynn came around the corner accompanied by a woman both boys assumed was her mother.
“Hey big bro!” she said in a highly exaggerated tone, sending them a gigantic wink with a grin that was very out of place. “Looks like you messed up big time mister!”
Willie could only stare back in shock. Alex was too busy trying not to laugh at her poor acting skills. It was so obvious that she and Willie weren’t family.
“Hey...sis,” Willie said finally, still unsure what was happening just then.
Holding onto the bars and leaning close into the holding cell, Flynn dropped the grin immediately.
“Julie tipped us off and Alex’s parents aren’t coming, so we’re doing you guys a big favor,” she said to them in a low voice, laying on the irritation and topping it off with a tilt of her head and a smile that suggested murder.
Promptly, Willie stood up and was let out of the cell, still looking at Flynn and her mom in bewilderment. Alex sat with his hands folded in uncertainty.
“Him too,” Flynn’s mom nodded toward him. The officer opened the door for him and Alex sighed as he came out, realizing just how high his nerves had really been while sitting there for the past few hours. He could suddenly feel the blood rushing into his fingers again.
As he and Willie followed Flynn and her mom outside, he wasn’t surprised that his parents had opted not to come get him. If he guessed right, his father would’ve refused to go in some backward attempt to show tough love, and his mother would’ve been barred from going herself to show she agreed with the choice. Both he and Willie thanked Flynn’s mom as they sat in the back seat of her van.
Flynn turned around in the passenger seat as they drove off and Alex knew what was coming.
“How many times am I gonna save your ass?” she directed at Willie.
“Language, honey,” her mom warned. Flynn rolled her eyes, but backed down a little.
Willie smiled nervously at her.
“Third time’s a charm?” he offered with little confidence.
“There better not be a third time,” she cautioned. “Seriously, what were you thinking?”
Alex opened his mouth to respond but she put up a hand.
“Actually, save it. Anything I have to say is just what Julie will say to you guys later, and she’s the one who’s really mad at you. Right now, I’ve got permission to skip school and I’m not gonna waste it lecturing you two.”
Sharing a look with Willie, both boys were happy to at least not have to endure Julie’s wrath right that minute. It was only imaginable what Luke was going through at the moment.
“So, how did you know I was there?” Willie asked.
Flynn leaned back into the correct position in her seat and took in a deep breath.
“Julie’s aunt is supposed to be on sabbatical, but apparently she can’t stop doing little bits of work here and there. She’s an investigator. Anyway, I guess she was doing something at ungodly hours on a Sunday night for God knows why, and she was already in the station when Sunset Gets-Caught-Being-Stupid was brought in. I guess she tried to make sure nobody called the Pattersons because she promised Julie she won’t, and she found out there was a fifth kid with no emergency contact so she had Julie call me, and I had to wake up at six-thirty this morning to an angry Julie and while I, for one, don’t care that you were trying to steal something, the way y’all did it was just so dumb, I can’t even stand to look at y’all - ”
“Okay, we get it,” Alex interrupted.
“But the important thing is,” Flynn continued. “We can’t take you guys home. Sorry.”
“Wait, why not?” Alex asked.
“I have one hour before I need to be in the office,” Flynn’s mom told them. “So I’m putting my girl in charge of you two for the day.”
Flynn looked back at them smugly.
“Oh, I’m putting you two to work,” she said, not hiding how much she enjoyed being in a position of power.
Alex could only gesture with his hands in a manner of saying “ah, well,” and sighing in acceptance. This was loads better than dealing with his parents for the time being. And Willie seemed to have finally broken entirely out of the strange trance he’d been in ever since they’d seen Caleb.
“Do we get a nap first?” Willie asked. “‘Cuz we’ve been awake all night.”
Flynn’s eyebrows shot up in realization and she flopped back into her seat again with a sigh.
“That’s fair.”
It was well past noon by the time Alex opened his eyes. They had thanked Mrs. Taylor and then immediately passed out on the living room couch. Barely gaining his bearings, he found Willie still zonked on the opposite arm of the couch. He couldn’t help but admire his sleeping form, so much calmer than any other time he knew. The sunlight streaming in from the blinds glanced perfectly off his cheekbones and highlighted the rich brown tones in his hair. Alex had been struck by how handsome he was from the second they met at the diner, but he’d hardly gotten a moment to properly appreciate how beautiful he was.
Somehow there was something so lonely about him that brought an ache to Alex’s chest. Their conversation from earlier replayed in his mind. Willie really seemed to believe he didn’t belong anywhere when the only thing Alex wanted in the whole world was to keep him tightly in his arms. He really hoped to show Willie how much he meant to him some day.
“Oh my god, you are so in love with him,” he heard Flynn saying as she stood at the edge of the living room. He was too tired to give a proper response and could only turn to her still wearing a look of fondness. “Oh my god, stop, you are so precious!”
All Alex could do was lightly chuckle in return. Flynn tilted her head adoringly.
“And to think I was there from the beginning,” she reminisced.
Alex had a realization hit.
“I never said thank you, did I?”
She shrugged.
“No. But now you get to pay me back by doing all the chores my mom left for you.”
Heaving a sigh, Alex sank back into the couch and pressed his lips together, already reeling from exhaustion.
“Yep,” he muttered before reaching over and grabbing Willie’s hand, gently shaking it to kindly wake him up.
“Sheldon...stop,” Willie groaned as his tired face pinched together against the light. Alex giggled as he leaned over and tried shaking his shoulder instead.
“Hey, it’s me,” he said in a low voice, watching as Willie’s eyes fluttered open and immediately gazed back into his face. The absolutely enamoured smile that spread from cheek to cheek as he took in Alex’s face framed with his hair hanging down was more than Alex could take, and he felt honest-to-God butterflies in his stomach.
“Hey,” Willie murmured, his voice a pitch lower than usual from being asleep with just the right amount of vocal fry. It took all of Alex’s strength not to smother him right there on the couch.
“I really do hate to break this up, you lovebirds,” Flynn told them. “But it’s time to get to work!” She clapped her hands and the boys clambered off the couch, still sharing admiring looks at each other. She led them through her house, listing off the many things her mom had demanded: cleaning bathrooms, weeding the garden, and mowing the lawn were all there.
“And last but not least,” Flynn was saying as she led them upstairs. She flung the door open to an unfurnished room with bare walls and plastic covering the floor. “Painting!”
Alex saw Willie’s face transform from bleary task mode to shining with joy at the prospect of getting to paint. He wasn’t sure what it was, but everything Willie did was making him fall even further in a way he hadn’t thought possible. They were doing household chores for heaven’s sake. It made him consider doing all the rest of the chores just to let Willie do something he enjoyed. After seeing his reaction to Caleb, Alex thought it would lift his spirits more than anything.
“I say we divide and conquer then?” he suggested, putting a hand on Willie’s shoulder and giving it a firm squeeze. Willie tore his eyes away from the unpainted walls to give Alex a puzzled look.  Before he could ask questions, though, Alex simply looked him directly in the eyes and nodded toward the room before them, insisting he stay and paint without saying a word. He saw Willie’s expression soften and one corner of his mouth turn up in a delighted smirk once he understood the message.
“Okay,” Willie muttered to him, facing the bare walls with newfound glee.
Willie watched Alex head back down the stairs and he couldn’t help but be overwhelmed with gratitude. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to spend as much time with him as possible - looking into that angelic face as he’d woken up had spun his head more than anything else in his life - but it was just the thought of how he was suddenly in Alex’s world and it was so...different. It vaguely reminded him of hanging out with everyone after the show at the Pearl, but it appeared to be so much deeper and so tight-knit. Julie and Flynn and their families went so far as to stick out their necks for the guys when they really had messed up, and it wasn’t even an obligation. Even being made to do housework for people who were still practically strangers to him felt like he was being taken in with open arms. He had the intruding thought that he’d eventually wear out his welcome.
“So, are we painting everything the same?” he asked Flynn, rubbing his hands together. Flynn wagged a finger and smiled with excitement.
“No,” she teased. Going over to a corner, she lifted two cans of paint, handing one of them to him. Looking at the swatch smeared on the top of the lid, Willie smiled to see a lovely teal, and then sunflower yellow on the can in Flynn’s hands.
“Oooh yes, these are some good choices,” he said, rolling up a sleeve with his free hand. All the worried thoughts could be put aside as they began popping the lids off and mixing the paint. “Have you got a hair tie I could borrow?”
“There is something about a boy asking me that question that just feels amazing,” Flynn commented as she briefly headed out to fetch one. Giggling at her remark, Willie lifted the paint mixer and watched the color drip into the can in fascination. There was something familiar about the notion of painting that made him wonder if it was something he’d done often before. Before forgetting. Would putting the brush in his hand unleash some kind of muscle memory or sense of nostalgia for something he didn’t know he had? Flynn returned with the hair tie and handed it to him, and he immediately pulled his hair back into a small bun.
“Alright, so these walls are gonna be the teal green color,” Flynn instructed, pointing toward the walls furthest from the window. “And these over here are gonna be yellow. I’ll start with the yellow and meet you at the corner, sound good?” Willie nodded at her as she moved her paint supplies over to the opposite side of the room, putting her braids up into a ponytail as well.
“Copy that,” Willie replied.
Once the paint was all mixed they got to work, both silently focused on the task at hand. For a while, all that could be heard was the repetitive swipe of brushes against the texture of the wall. There had been no sweeping rush like Willie imagined, but a gentle comfort quickly took over as he watched the color fill the empty space. He heard a loud buzzing outside and for a moment, peeked out the window to see Alex steady at work mowing the lawn below.
“So,” Flynn started, almost making him jump as he turned his attention to her. “It looks like our skater boy likes to paint; do you do art too? I saw your face.”
Chuckling, Willie hadn’t realized he’d gotten himself stuck in a situation that warranted friendly banter. Out of all of Alex’s friends, though, she was the one he’d seen the most, now that he thought about it. Despite how aggressive she had appeared at first, he really enjoyed her energy.
“Yeah, actually I draw. A lot,” he told her.
“Nice!” she nodded. “What kind of stuff do you draw?”
“People...places,” he said thoughtfully as he continued painting. “Memories.”
Flynn kept nodding, her expression becoming more pensive. “Cool.... Memories are interesting. Did you do a lot of cool things when you were little?”
Willie chewed on his tongue for a minute, realizing she still didn’t know. Even now that he’d been away from Caleb for a while and Alex’s reaction had been so kind, sometimes speaking of his amnesia still felt like something that wasn’t allowed. Regardless, it was a pretty important detail.
“I actually don’t know,” he stated. Flynn’s eyebrows knit together in response. “I was in an accident a little over a year ago, and I don’t remember anything - well, I remember a few things, but not a lot. Whatever I can figure out, I try to draw it so it stays with me.”
She gave him a long sympathetic look. Every time it was different; Alex had been a little shocked but then really sweet, Bessie had merely brushed over it like it wasn’t anything crazy, and now Flynn had her big brown eyes staring with such sadness in them. Again, he wondered how much he had really lost along with his memory. It seemed to be a thing everyone else could properly mourn, knowing the difference, but he couldn’t no matter how much he tried.
“That’s really awful,” she said. “I’m sorry.”
Willie only nodded, accepting her words.
“It sucks, but I manage,” he said. They both resumed painting after noticing they had stopped for a moment.
“I mean, you made it here, which is pretty amazing,” Flynn told him. “Well, not here as in we just picked you up from the police station, but you know, you left Vegas and have your sweet job at the record shop.”
He shrugged, trying to be casual. Those thoughts were getting to him today in a way they hadn’t ever before. The ones that said he was still messing everything up anyway. He was just in a different city with a different job. It was great that he’d miraculously found Alex, which had been his entire goal, but now that he’d passed that step in his plan, life went on. And it hadn’t really become so different, now that Caleb had his hands on things again. There were still so many questions about that as well, because he really did wonder if maybe he had made everything out to be worse in his mind. Caleb had been his guardian for three years and Willie was one of numerous kids - he couldn’t be that insidious, could he?
“I said, ‘you’re dripping paint on your shirt!’” Flynn repeated to him, enunciating loudly and snapping him out of his train of thought.
“Oh,” he started, looking down at his now ruined shirt and then continuing to work on the wall. He could live with it.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked.
He shook his head. “It’s nothing. I just keep thinking.”
“Uh huh. Whole lot of nothing to think about in there.”
Willie shot her a slightly wounded look. She rolled her eyes.
“Sarcasm, sorry. Looks like you have so much on your mind you can’t even function. So what’s up?”
He looked at her, unsure where to begin. It was great that she seemed easy to trust, because it made him less hesitant about talking, but he didn’t want to turn the painting session into something else. His mouth betrayed him though.
“I just keep thinking that maybe I have everything wrong and I brought all the guys down with me,” he confessed. Flynn didn’t respond, but listened quietly. “I met Alex and it was amazing! And I got it in my head that maybe being here with him would make everything better. But it looks like I’m just a bad influence.”
Flynn had nodded along until that last sentence, to which she tilted her head and squinted.
“Hold up,” she said. “Alex told me Caleb was your guardian, right?”
Willie nodded.
“Who also told Alex you were dead for no good reason?”
He nodded again.
“And you think you’re the bad guy here?” She had set down her brush and placed her hands on her hips.
Taking in a deep breath, Willie prepared to explain.
“Well - ”
Flynn simply held up both hands to shut him up.
“Willie. Buddy. You’re just a kid.”
You’re just a kid.
The words echoed around in his brain for a little bit as he let them settle in. She was right. Somehow he’d lost sight of that.
“You made some mistakes, I get it,” she continued. “But you’re not the bad guy. You’re still figuring things out. Actually, you know what I first thought of you? Well, actually, my first thought was that you were some creep who was trying to get into my friend’s concert, but after that, you know who I saw? A really good guy trying to show someone he cared. And bad people don’t do that.”
For a long time Willie just stared back at her in amazement. Somehow Flynn had managed to completely obliterate any other self-deprecating thought he had. It was the most human he’d felt all day. There was a sticky thud as his brush landed on plastic and he rushed to throw his arms around her.
“Oh!” she cried in surprise, slowly accepting the hug in return and patting his back. Willie squeezed her tightly and then stepped back, chuckling to himself as a small wave of embarrassment hit.
“Julie has good taste in friends,” he told her. “You’re really good at those pep talks.”
Flynn beat her chest with her palm and graciously took the compliment.
“Thank you.”
Willie picked up his brush again and continued working. He almost laughed when he had the thought that while he technically already had a boyfriend, Flynn was his first real friend. He was going to make that count.

_______
“Hey,” said Jensen, knocking on the door to your room. You kept your back to him from where you lay on your bed and felt a hand gently rest on your forehead. “Feeling okay, honey? You’ve been quieter than normal today.”
“Sorry,” you said. The bed dipped behind you and you felt his back press against yours.
“Nothing to be sorry for,” he said, running his hand over your head. “Want to go on a ride with me?”
“It’s after eight,” you said.
“You stay up until midnight every night plus it’s summer. Come on. Pretty please? We’ll get ice cream on the way home,” he said. “The really bad for you kind too.”
“Jensen, not today, please,” you said. “Maybe tomorrow night.”
“Nope. Tonight. Unless you’re dying, we’re going out. End of discussion,” he said, ruffling your head. You groaned and sat up, following him to the garage and slipping into a pair of flip flops, following him into his SUV. A few minutes later you were driving towards the east side of town and you were frowning.
“I thought the place we go to is near home,” you said.
“The ice cream place is. But we have to go somewhere else first,” he said, turning on the radio to a quiet station.
“I’m sorry I burnt the bacon this morning,” you said.
“Oh, it was a little over done was all,” he said.
“It was black. You looked like you wanted to throw up,” you said.
“Maybe it was a little burnt. But you guys made me breakfast for father’s day all on your own and my eggs were delicious. I loved it,” he said.
“Jensen. It’s just me. You don’t have to pretend,” you said.
“I’m not pretending. My four kids made me breakfast for the first time and considering three of them are still very small, I think it was pretty fantastic,” he said.
“Whatever,” you said, leaning your head against the window. You saw him reach his hand over and hold it open on the center console in your periphery. “What do you want? I’m not holding your fucking hand like some five year old child.”
“Alright,” he said, leaving it there as he drove. You watched the lights and houses go by, catching part of the city before you were past it and well into the eastern part of town. He drove far, right to the outskirts before you saw a sign and sat up. You swallowed as he continued into the small community there, getting off of the highway and main road, taking a few twists and turns before you saw where you were going.
You were quiet as he pulled into the place and drove for while, stopping after a moment and turning the car off. He hopped out and went to the trunk, taking something out and then knocking on your window.
“Well come on,” he said. You unbuckled and stepped out, looking around and rubbing your arm. “Okay, tall munchkin?”
“Why are we here?” you asked.
“Because it’s father’s day,” he said, holding out his free hand. You shakily grabbed it and stepped closer to him, looking all around. “It’s alright. The lights are coming on anyways.”
You nodded and followed him across the grass, Jensen knowing right where he was going. When he stopped, the car was far back behind you and Jensen set a bundle of blue and white flowers down.
“I came up for mother’s day too. I would have brought you then but you had that stomach bug,” he said. You stood there and nodded, taking a deep breath. “When’s the last time you were here, kiddo?”
“The funeral,” you said quietly. “I couldn’t remember what cemetery they were in. That’s besides the fact of how scary they are.”
“It’s not scary,” he said. “Look around for a second and listen.”
You shook your head and he wrapped his arms around you.
“Come on. Try for me,” he said. “You always try for me if I ask.”
“Sometimes that really sucks you know. Trying,” you said, shutting your eyes.
“You came home with me on that rainy night. You tried for me at your lowest. This is a walk in the park compared to that,” he said. “Nothing will ever be as hard as that was and guess what, you came out the other side okay. Just look around for me, Y/N.”
He dropped his arms and stepped back. You sighed and opened your eyes, spinning around in a quick circle. He gave you a bitch face and you rolled your eyes, turning more slowly.
“There’s trees here and lots of flowers around. The lampposts look like those ones at the park, don’t they? It’s nice and quiet. It’s a lot like that time I woke you up early to go watch your first sunrise at the park,” he said.
“It looks like a park almost,” you said to yourself as you glanced at the curvy paths in the place.
“That’s because it’s not meant to be a scary place, Y/N. It’s supposed to be a place you want to come visit, like the park. S’nothing to be afraid of here,” he said.
“I hated this place,” you said, staring down at the ground. “I hated that day. I didn’t even cry. I already knew better at that point. Still got hit when I got back to my foster home that day for sniffling. I always thought they might be mad at me for that, my parents. Not being upset that day for them,” you said. He bumped your shoulder and you looked up.
“They knew you were upset, honey. Nothing can break your heart more once you become a parent than your child hurting. Your parents are not mad at you. I know your head. They aren’t mad at you for this being the first time you’ve been back either. I can promise you that.”
“Lucky guess,” you said.
“Today being your first father’s day being adopted and all have anything to do with how quiet you were earlier?” he asked.
“Two lucky guesses,” you said. He threw his arms over your shoulders and gave you a hug from behind. “I don’t want them to be mad at me or think I moved on and I’m going to forget about them.”
“We will never forget about them, tall munchkin. They’re are as much of a part of our family as you are. They’ll always be a part of ours,” he said.
“I changed my last name though. How could they not be angry for that?” you asked. He was quiet behind you and you felt a kiss on your temple.
“Guys our daughter is doing it again,” said Jensen. You went to speak but he sighed. “She always like this or this a teenager thing? I know you guys handled potty training which thank you very much for but I mean, you know, you guys could speak up and tell her she’s being an idiot. An idiot we love very much but an idiot.”
“You are the one speaking to a grave,” you said.
“It’s okay to talk to people that have died, Y/N. Death is weird. We don’t know what happens when it happens but just because someone died doesn’t mean they have to be gone. A name is just a name. It doesn’t mean anything when it comes to family. Take Jared for instance. He’s your Uncle but we don’t have the same last name now do we?”
“Yeah but I asked to have my name done cause it meant something to me and-”
“I know what it meant. No one’s ever throwing you away. You’re ours, forever. All of ours,” he said.
“God, you’re so sappy,” you said, wiping at your face.
“See? I had to handle that one again! Guys, a little leg work here,” said Jensen. You smiled and felt a quick breeze whip past. You looked back and he rested his chin on your shoulder. “It was the wind, dork. Not a sign.”
“You’re the one that mentioned it, not me,” you said.
“So you gonna wish him happy father’s day or do I have to do that for you too?” asked Jensen.
“Happy father’s day, dad,” you said. “I’m a lot better than last time I was here. I’m okay now. I promise.”
“We’ll get her by more often,” said Jensen. “Oh, and our girl can’t cook bacon for shit. I blame that on you guys.”
You giggled, Jensen hugging you again.
“Okay, okay. I get it,” you said, grabbing his arms and tilting your head back to look up at him. “Happy father’s day too.”
“Thank you, kiddo,” he said with a big smile. “Best one yet.”
“Why?”
“It’s our first one with you adopted. Of course it’s the best one,” he said.
“Sometimes I really can’t believe you played a badass on TV,” you said.
“Shut up,” he said, giving you a noggie. “Let’s go get some ice cream.”
“How she doing now?” asked De when you were sitting on the back patio by the fire pit around midnight, curled up in your chair in a hoodie that used to belong to one of them. Your eyes were shut and you knew you should have walked up to the house but the fire was cozy warm and you really didn’t want to move. “Daddy daughter trip work?”
“Oh, she’s a sucker for those. I got her wrapped around my finger,” said Jensen with a chuckle.
“I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around, Jensen,” she said. A fingertip grazed your forehead and you heard a light laugh.
“Yeah, I know I am. I don’t mind,” he said, a piece of hair tucking behind your ear before it was quiet, a few crackles of fire. “She’s too little to have that much fear and pain bottled up inside her. There’s always something new in there we don’t know about and there’s no way for us to stop it.”
“You stopped it today,” said De.
“No I didn’t. She was afraid her parents would be mad and think she moved on because she has us now. I didn’t stop that. I helped her through it but it’s not gone. It’s gonna stick in that kid’s head for a good long time and there’s nothing we can do.”
“Jay, I know we’d both take on all that pain for her if we could and maybe we can’t do that. It doesn’t mean what we do, things like today, it doesn’t mean those moments don’t make a difference. She was happy for the first time all day after you guys got home tonight,” she said. “That’s real and that makes an impact.”
“This kid has more scars than you and me put together,” he said. “It’s just...I just want our baby to be happy and safe.”
“She is. Everyday she is more and more comfortable here and with us. Earlier this week she even called me mom a few times,” she said.
“She did? That’s a huge step for her. We’ve told her so many times she never has to,” he said.
“I know. She did it on her own. Maybe she was just trying it out. It’s up to her what she wants. But this is the same girl that sat shaking at the end of our bed scared to even look us in the eye because she thought we’d hurt her. It’s been a year and a half Jensen. We went from that to her asleep out here all tucked in, feeling safe enough with us here to protect her. It is slow some going sometimes, I know it is, but she is a million times better off than she was, even on days like today,” said De.
“I’m not used to being the one freaking out all the time,” he said. “That’s your job.”
“You know how I was a little jealous of you two at first,” she said, a smile in her voice. “You’re so close.”
“Yeah but remember what the doc said.”
“She was far more afraid of you than she ever was of me,” she said. “It’s why we didn’t have to work as hard for us to work. You had to earn every second of it. I know that was hard.”
“You know how sometimes the kids can be a bit much?” he asked and she laughed. “I can understand being annoyed or thinking yes, that picture is not gorgeous that they just drew or whatever. I can understand that you don’t like every single thing every single second about your child. But even if your kid is driving you up the wall, you still love them. You’d still stop anything that ever wanted to hurt them.”
“What’s your point?”
“She didn’t know that. We had to start from nothing. It took months for me to feel like I could even hug her without scaring her,” he said. “Days like today, they make me wonder if I still scare her ever.”
“Jensen. You earned all of that with her. You proved yourself to her over and over again. You’re the last person on earth she’ll ever be afraid of and you know what else? You’re the first one she’ll ask to protect her,” she said.
“Until she finds a boy,” he chuckled.
“Babe. Even after the boy, you’ll be a close second,” she said.
“I can take that,” he said. “She mentioned any boys in particular?”
“No. I’m simply saying she starts college in a few months. College boys are cute,” she said.
“She can stay single and live with us forever as far as I’m concerned,” he laughed.
“She might disagree with you there,” she said. It was quiet again and you heard murmurs before the creak of a chair. “You gonna carry her?”
“I ain’t that old,” he said. You fluttered open your eyes as you got picked up, your legs going around his back. “Bedtime munchkin.”
“Mhm,” you hummed, shutting your eyes again. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he said after a beat. “Go on back to sleep. I gotcha from here.”
Eight Years Later
“Where we go mommy?” asked Allie as you unbuckled her from her car seat.
“We’re saying hi to mommy’s daddy for father’s day,” said TJ, grabbing her hand as you went to the back to grab the flowers. The bundle of them had scooted back and you stared down at your stomach with a sigh.
“I got it,” said your dad behind you, reaching inside and getting them for you.
“Thanks, dad,” you said, leaning against the back of the SUV for a moment. “I am so over being pregnant.”
“Another month and you’ll be a momma all over again,” he said. “He still keeping you up at night with the kicking?”
“The boy never stops,” you said.
“Chill out, Mr. Hanover,” he said. “Let mommy sleep some.”
“Oh he’s going again,” you said, taking his hand and resting it on your stomach. “Feel him?”
“Yeah,” he said, a soft smile on his face. “I can’t believe my baby made a baby."
“I’m still your baby,” you said.
“Even if you are getting grown up,” he said. “Come on.”
He walked with you up the grass, setting your flowers down along with his.
“Jay, I thought you mommy’s daddy,” said Allie.
“I am, sweetie, but mommy was lucky enough to have two mommies and daddies,” said your dad.
“Oh. I don’t get it,” she said.
“We’ll explain when you’re older,” said TJ with a smile, picking her up and resting her on his shoulders.
“Well happy father’s day to my three guys,” you said, giving TJ a kiss and your dad a hug.
“Can we get ice cream now?” asked Allie.
“Sure. It’s father’s day tradition,” you said. She hopped back with TJ towards the car, your dad bumping your hip gently. “Sup?”
“Someday your children might be parents,” he said. “I know that’s way beyond what you’re thinking at the moment but it’s true. Do me a favor if that happens.”
“What?”
“Try to teach them that’s there no such thing as a perfect parent. Give ‘em some love and safety and they’ll do okay,” he said.
“Dad’s in a mood again, guys,” you said.
“You look like you have a basketball under your shirt,” he said.
“Sarcasm. Great defense mechanism,” you said, grabbing his arm when the baby kicked hard.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah. You gotta calm down in there, buddy. You can meet your other grandparents after you come out, not before,” you said. He stopped kicking after a moment and you sighed. “How on earth did mom have two of these inside her at once.”
“Oh, I remember being told to get the snip very quickly after that,” he said.
“Dad. I’m still scared from the couch make out session. I don’t need to hear about that,” you said.
“I made out with your mom this morning,” he said with a smirk. You fake gagged and rolled your eyes, saying goodbye before you went back down the grass with him. “It was awesome.”
“You’re such a boy, it’s ridiculous,” you said as you looked at him. You felt yourself start to trip and two very quick hand shot out and grabbed your arms. You got your feet under you, your own arms wrapped around your stomach. You took a deep breath, your dad staring at you. “I’m okay.”
“I’m sorry,” he said. You cocked your head and felt the soreness in your arms, glancing down to see the red spots from where he’d caught you. “I hurt you. I shouldn’t have grabbed you so tight.”
“Dad. You didn’t hurt me. Me and baby are all good. I’m not supposed to be walking on uneven ground anyways. You didn’t do anything wrong,” you said.
“You’re gonna bruise,” he said.
“I know this is incredibly hard for you to hear but you protecting my child is more important to me than you ever doing a thing for me so thank you,” you said.
“Can we go back to me embarrassing you? We can talk about how me and mom-”
“Argh,” you said, hearing him laugh as you walked back down to the path. “TJ, my dad’s being weird again.”
“First off, that’s him always. Second, are you saying we’re not gonna make out when we’re their age cause that doesn’t sound like fun,” he said.
“See? He gets it,” said your dad.
“Mommy, I want ice cream,” said Allie.
“Me too, kiddo,” you said, climbing into the passenger seat with TJ’s help.
“We’ll meet you there, Jensen,” he said as your dad headed back to his car.
“Hey dad? Call the other guys to go too,” you said.
“You sure?” he shouted back.
“I’m sure. It should be everybody’s thing,” you said.
“You got it, kiddo,” he said. “See you guys in a little bit.”
“You good?” asked TJ, rubbing your arm when he slid back in behind the wheel. He lowered his hand to your stomach and you smiled.
“Yeah, we’re all good. Happy father’s day, babe.”

THE STORY OF KAYLA . (as so far by my head.)
trigger warnings include: divorce, parental abandonment (kinda), neglect,  emotional and verbal abuse [if there are others, i apologize]
-she’s never known a world in which her parents are together,, they divorced at the age of 3 for her. her mother got the job of raising her and her dad would send gifts and money sometimes. the last time she saw her dad was when he remarried and she was 7. her stepmother didn’t want some reminder of his past wife, so that was the end of that relationship.
-her mom did try but, she looked so much like her dad and even had a similar brain to his, she pushed kayla away. told her all she would be good for is being a wife one day and she shouldn’t try for anything else.
-she would buy her things, pretty dresses and make up. nice girly things if she was in the mood for it, gave her a nice nanny (she’s had the same one since she was 5.)  but if she asked for anything school related even if it was required, she’d be told no. she stopped asking by the age of 10.
-kayla is extremely booksmart, it’s just never been fostered in a way she can use it well. but she genuinely sucks at being people smart,   stuff tends to fly over her head and she misses a lot. not in she’s /a dumb way/ but she genuinely just  does not know what the fuck is going on.
-a lot of kayla’s pain is hid behind smiles, fancy bags and trying to pretend she’s someone she’s not. she is a lot more than just the bubbly ditzy girl you see when you first look at her. she just doesn’t have that many safe spaces (besides carrie & dirty candi and even then it’s only partially ) to be herself.
