Bloom, Alfred. Life of Shinran Shonin: The Journey to Self-Acceptance. 1968. Reprint. Berkeley: Institute of Buddhist Studies, 1994. 80 pp. One of the earliest treatment of Shinran’s life in English by a Western scholar. Scholastic in nature but this monograph can be enjoyed by non-specialists. The author raises many intriguing questions, for example, 1) why did Shinran enter the monastery, 2) why did he leave, 3) what were the specific charges against him, and 4) what prompted his return to Kyoto.
Bloom, Alfred. Shinran’s Gospel of Pure Grace. Tucson: The Univ. of Arizona Press, 1965. 95 pp. The first systematic and “theological” treatment on Shin- ran by a Western scholar. Extremely popular in college classrooms and still in print after thirty years.
Bloom, Alfred. Tannisho: Resource for Modern Living. Honolulu: The Buddhist Study Center, 1981. 102 pp. Explains the most important chapters that illumine the heart of Shinshu teaching from the perspective of modern issues and concerns. Dobbins, James C. Jodo Shinshu: Shin Buddhism in Medieval Japan. Bloomington and Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, 1989. 242 pp. An excellent his- torical treatment of the development of Shinshu institutions from Shinran to Rennyo. This book, in particular, fills “gaps” in previous scholarship in two areas: 1) contributions of Kakwnyo (third abbot) and his son Zonkaku and 2) developments of the other Shinshu branches. The discussion of doctrinal heresy offers an innovative and insightful approach to our understanding of doctrine and its historical evolution.

The book provides a glimpse into a respected scholar and teacher who inspired many of the Shinshu teachers in North America. Kakumura, Northiko. Shinran: His Life and Thought. Kiyozawa, Manshi. December Fan: The Buddhist Essays of Manshi Kiyozawa. Trans. and ed. by Nobuo Haneda. Komiyama Printing Co., 98 pp. Kiyozawa (1863-1903) is one of the most pivotal Buddhist leaders in modern Jodo-Shinshu history. Belonging to the Higashi Honganji branch, this progressive priest helped to reform the teach- ings with message that resonated with modern Japan. It contains ample translations of key passages from his writings based on major doctrinal themes. Authored by two main translators of the Shin Buddhist Translation Series.
Yamaoka, Seigen. True Pure Land Buddhism: Jodoshinshu: An Introduction. Los Angeles: Pure Land Publications, 1991. 65 pp. Provides a good traditional overview of the major doctrines, supported by appropriate citations from the original sources. Written from within the tradition with emphasis on orthodox doctrine. May prove to be difficult reading for those looking for spiritual edification on an introductory level. Translations of Jodo-Shinshu scriptures Inagaki, Hisao. The Three Pure Land Sutras. Kyoto

"Its not alright my love"

It wasn't the waking up in a bed that wasn't yours which shocked you, you had gone out with friends the night before so perhaps you'd decided on a sleepover or something? A hook up you don't remember was less likely because even if you'd drank too much you were slightly repulsed by the idea of a relationship since your last… unfortunate one.
Regardless, it was the plain concrete wall you were facing and the gentle breathing coming from somewhere behind you that made you question things. You sat up a little too quickly and earned yourself a painful whiplash from the speech you turned your neck to face the strange breathing. The room was entirely concrete except the wooden floor, a stack of plastic chairs in one corner and in the one diagonal to you was a woman sat scribbling in a book. On the wall to her left was a window that must've been covered by a black curtain from the other side.
The woman's head twitches to the side slightly and she looked up at you with a grin plastered on her lips, the kind of grin a kid makes on Christmas when they see their presents. She slams her book shut and puts it on the floor next to her, keeping her eyes on you. A strange silence fell over the two of you as you seemingly both waited for the other to speak but considering the situation you were surprised you weren't already screaming.
The woman sighes contently “did you have good dreams?”
…what?
It almost shocks you into a new level of concern when she asks it so casually, nothing about this was normal but her tone made you want to think it was. You squint your eyes and open your mouth, she seems to straighten her spine as if bracing herself for an onslaught. “where. the. fuck. Am I?!” it comes out quieter than you'd hoped but the shout was enough to make her smile waver slightly.
“Well, right now you're at my work. Don't worry yourself we will be going somewhere comfier soon, a proper bed awaits you once I get the call to confirm the house is ready. My name is Amida” she wasn't wrong about the bed not being comfy, and taking a look down at it you realize it's just a pillow and thin blanket. You look back up a t her and furrow your brows, her smile hadn't ceased.
“ok- look crazy lady, I don't know where we are but kidnapping is a crime. Are you aware of that?” it's sarcastic, you can be sarcastic when angry. You can also be violent when you're angry so she should really be considering herself lucky you're not in that mood. “Why are you grinning like a mad woman? Oh wait you are a mad woman, right?” You grit your teeth and your nearly trembling, being angry is really helping control the sacred tears you can feel bubbling.
Her smile softens “my little love is so clever, your right it is a crime. Luckily no one's kidnapped you.” Deranged is putting it lightly now, the way she's talking feels patronizing and only adds to the list of things you really wanna sock her in the face for. But you're almost certain it'd hurt you more than her with that jawline she has.
You blink and blow air into your cheeks as you think of a response, letting the air out of your mouth with a popping noise you continue. “right- yes, only problem is I'm pretty sure you've kidnapped me” your smile is more to bare your teeth at her then anything. That door on the wall opposite you is looking real open-able right now.
She notices your gaze and her smile becomes a firmly set fron, her eyebrows furrowing. “Look at me” and you almost ignore her but then you hear her step towards you. Your gaze snaps back to her and she groups your chin with her thumb and forefinger.
You gulp almost audibly and it makes her smile return as she speaks again. “I've brought you to me, where you belong, my love. How could that ever be a crime?” she kneels down to be eye level with you and it's unsettling how green her eyes are, this eye contact feels far too intimate for you.
You bring your hand up to try to push her off you but she let's go of your chin to catch it And brings it to her lips for a kiss. “I don't want to hurt you, darling. Don't make me punish you” she points like she thinks you give a shit and screeches like a banshee when you sneer and bring your other hand up to punch her left cheek.
She falls back and pants “you stupid girl!” She screams as she cradles her face. You cease the opportunity and bolt toward the door, making it through just as you see her jumping up to stand. You slam the door behind you and realize you can barely see anything in this new room, there are no shadowy silhouettes which leads you to believe that nothing is in here.
You hear her scratch at the other side of the door, her screaming and banging echoing through the wood. Luckily you've pressed yourself up against it so she can't force her way through too easily. While you look around at the darkness frantically trying to come up with a plan, you can see light higher up in the room like there was a door there. The only question was how to get to it.
There must've been stairs up, maybe a couple feet away from you? You'd have to let go of the door to get to them and without light you'd surely trip or fumble, it might be your safest bet right now but Amida would be chasing you so you'd have to be quick.
You take a deep breath and cut out her screaming before pushing yourself off the door and rushing to where you think the stairs are. Once the door behind you slams open there is light flooded into the room. There are stairs! But there's also a mental case chasing you.
You rush up the stairs, relying on the light now and ignoring the sound of Amida rushing behind you as you force open the double doors at the top.
A forest.
Like, a real actual forest.
You were in London- where did she get a forest?! Where were you!
Amida let's out another frustrated scream behind you and you realize that you need to run and run fast, however the escape was short lived once a sharp pain flooded the back of your head and you fell into a dreamless sleep.
When you woke up all you could think about was what a great fat liar your kidnapper had been with her “I don't want to hurt you”, then again maybe it was stupid of you to have trusted her word in the first place, what with the kidnapping thing.
You found yourself trying to desperately recount every detail of your kidnapper, if you were to get out your need to report her to the police after all. Green eyes, wavy black hair, tall (at least an inch taller than you but you're unsure if she was wearing heels), Mixed race, round face, little to no makeup made things a bit easier. But laying there made you feel a bit useless
This time the floor was cold beneath you because the blanket and pillow you'd awoken atop before were gone, leaving your sore head to rest on the wooden floor. Even trying to tilt your neck to the side caused pain to eupt at the back of your scull so with great difficulty you pushed yourself to lean against the concrete wall with minimal head movement.
Once in your desired position you could see the floor length window quite well. The black curtains that were shut before on the other side were now wide open, revealing a white room with almost hospital-like equipment, aside from the man you don't recognise who was laid in a dentist chair in the center. Amida was busying about on a desk along the far wall and was now wearing a long white coat with black leathery looking gloves, looking like a proper mad scientist,bar the frizzy hair.
You wince as you open your mouth to get her attention, pain engulfing your head again and a groan unintentionally leaving your mouth and forcing your eyes shut. The throbbing calms itself after a minute and when you open your eyes again Amida is kneeling behind the glass and peering in, smiling softly at you. It takes everything in you not to jump back a bit because you know it will only cause you more pain, not to mention the fact that you're in the furthest corner of the room so you wouldn't be able to back up much anyway.
She pushes her lips together to suppress an even bigger smile and tilts her head to rest on her shoulder. “Are you awake, my love?” The tone is intimate in a way that makes you uncomfortable, it felt like soemone whispering sweet nothings in your ear but considering the surroundings of the situation maybe it'd be more appropriate for it to feel like a kidnapper whispering taunts at you. Amida pushes herself back a bit to sit cross legged now, her smile turning into a frown. “sweetness? Does your head hurt so much you can't speak to me?”
You swallow the lump in your throat, you want to shout at her like you did beforemaybe a couple profanities and insults and demands of being freed. But all you can muster without pain is a muttered “I don’ speak to crazy bitches” and you consider yourself very brave for keeping a sneer on your face when her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
She grinned and beings her palm up to rest on the glass. “so comforting to hear your voice, I know you must be terribly frustrated.” The way she said it felt patronising, like she was talking to a toddler throwing a tantrum. “it's ok, lovely. Once we've got you punishment over with I'll put you down for a nap and take you home, how does that sound?” And the way she smiles like it's a completely normal thing to ask makes you feel just a tad crazy.
You narrow your eyes at her and then shift your focus toward the man on the table, his breaths calm and peaceful and all you can think is ‘good for you’ becuse he's clearley having a lovely dream while your stuck talking to a crazy lady. “so what?” it comes out more of a whisper then anything but Amida hears it regardless so you don't really care. “What… punishment? You gonna beat me or soemthing?” eventhough your words are lazy and unbothered (mostly due to the lightheadedness you feel) a real tremor runs through you. You don't quite believe the horror that appears on her face once she hears you becuse she clearley has no issues hurting anyone, let alone you.
She slides slightly closer to the glass, leaning her forehead on it. “I could never hurt you, darling.” now it's her turn to be whispering again, however much of a lie the words are she does seem genuinely upset at the idea. Amida sighs and rapidly clenches and unclenches her jaw in some kind of nervous tick “I had to hit you, you'll understand eventually. I couldn't let you go upstairs and embarrass yourself by running around like a headless chicken” he smile returns again and it never fails to unsettle you. Apparently the idea of you trying desperately to escape is very funny to her which you have half a mind to argue about.
Instead of arguing you pen a further into the wall and silently will her piercing green eyes to stop looking at you. “Yeah, don't think I will understand” Is dragged from your lips before you can even think about it although luckily she doesn't seem to think it's rude, maybe the way her teeth revel themselves in a grin is sinister in a way that probably means ‘Oh yes you fucking will’. Then again maybe without the ‘fucking’, you cant really imagine Amida swearing.
“Whatever you say, gorgeous” is all she says before standing up and practically skipping over to stand next to the man in the chair. One by one she uses leather straps to tie down his limbs, arms then angles and even one round his neck. It does leave you wondering what she plans on doing to him and then a thought comes to mind that definitely wouldn't come to any normal person.
Would She…
Make you watch her hurt him?
Maybe you'd watched too much game of thrones or something, this woman is clearley insane to some capacity but in your mind you convince yourself that becuse you don't know this man you'd housing care to much if he gets hurt. Morbid? For sure. But honestly, you might be capable of thinking anything as long as it gets you out of this unscathed, mentally or otherwise.
Once she's sure he is secure, she brings her hand up and slaps him so hard that his head shoots to the side. Well that's not as professional as you thought she'd be but it does get the job done, he wakes up with a small startled noise, his breathing picking up and his eyes looking around rapidly.
“I do have a question for you, lovie” Amida doesn't look around as she speaks, instead moving to her desk again and picking up an item you can't see. The man asks questions, obviously confused and scared but both of you ignore him. For two different reasons, she probably couldn't care less but you know that he's probably not in for a fun time and letting yourself help will only make you guiltier when his pain eventually comes.
She turns around again, holding a small pair of metal pliers. “did it feel good to hurt me?” her question seems genuine but you have a feeling that it's not one she really wants an answer to. She walks up to the man, standing over him and bringing her hand to his face; she forces his mouth open by harshly squishing his cheeks. Her head turns to you, giving a sharp grin “I wonder if you'll enjoy this just as much”
You don't enjoy it when she pulls his teeth out one at a time. Some disgusting case of voyeurism is the cause. You have to turn your head gently away when he starts coughing on blood though, and she seems to notice because she sets the pliers down on his stomach and knocks firmly on the glass. Your eyes lazily look back to her. “You'll watch, my love. Or I will bring in someone more familiar to you”
You delicately blink and tears trickle without your consent, her resolve does not soften but she nods now that she's sure you'll watch. The man's fingernails are next, his screams gurgled by the blood from his gums. she collects all of the… parts in a metal kidney dish that's sat on a small table with wheels that she drags with her as she moves, a part of you wonders why she's collecting them but you find it's probably better not knowing.
You zone out for most of the rest, occasionally coming back into the world when his screams get louder as she opens his chest and shoves the teeth and nails in hazardly. Your a little shocked he hadn't fainted from blood loss or something.
The next time you come to yourself again Amida is gently cupping your cheek, looking terrified at your numb expression. “it's alright, my love” is whispered against your scalp when she hugs you to her chest. Her hands are clean which means she must have washed them but you know they'll never really be clean again.
She hugs you for a long while and you will yourself to feel nothing until you can't anymore. The man still lies open on that chair every time you glance over and the pain in your head still haunts you whenever you make the slightest move. She only seems to find more delight in the situation when you cry, because she can hug you closer.

Dovresti studiare i sutra e i commentari Mahayana per assicurarti che la tua comprensione sia ampia e completa.
Per quanto riguarda la pratica, dovresti concentrarti sulla Fede, i Voti e la recitazione del nome del Buddha.
La Fede è il primo criterio. Dovresti credere fermamente che il Mondo Saha è un luogo di sofferenza, la Terra Pura Occidentale è un regno di beatitudine... "tutti gli eventi meravigliosi e straordinari, che vanno oltre la comune comprensione che accadono nella Terra Pura sono un vero ambiente"...
Una volta che ti rendi conto che il Mondo Saha è un luogo di sofferenza mentre la Terra Pura è un luogo di gioia, dovresti sviluppare Voti veri e sinceri, decidendo di lasciare il Mondo Saha e tornare alla Terra della Beatitudine Suprema. Tali speranze e desideri dovrebbero essere del tutto sinceri, perché la tua forza non può liberarti dalla tua situazione difficile.
Se hai difficoltà a raggiungere la concentrazione mentale, dovresti concentrare la mente e recitare con cura. I criteri principali di tale concentrazione sono la sincerità e la serietà assolute. È molto difficile raggiungere la concentrazione mentale senza la sincerità assoluta. Tuttavia, la sincerità non è sufficiente. Dovresti poi ascoltare attentamente la recitazione. Che la recitazione venga eseguita ad alta voce o meno, dovrebbe avere origine dalla mente. Quindi procede dalla bocca ed entra nelle orecchie (anche se reciti in silenzio, i segni della recitazione orale esistono ancora nella mente). Con la mente e la bocca che recitano chiaramente, le orecchie che ascoltano chiaramente e la mente così concentrata, i pensieri illusori cesseranno da soli.
