The danger is clear and present: COVID isn’t merely a respiratory illness; it’s a multi-dimensional threat impacting brain function, attacking almost all of the body’s organs, producing elevated risks of all kinds, and weakening our ability to fight off other diseases. Reinfections are thought to produce cumulative risks, and Long COVID is on the rise. Unfortunately, Long COVID is now being considered a long-term chronic illness — something many people will never fully recover from. Dr. Phillip Alvelda, a former program manager in DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office that pioneered the synthetic biology industry and the development of mRNA vaccine technology, is the founder of Medio Labs, a COVID diagnostic testing company. He has stepped forward as a strong critic of government COVID management, accusing health agencies of inadequacy and even deception. Alvelda is pushing for accountability and immediate action to tackle Long COVID and fend off future pandemics with stronger public health strategies. Contrary to public belief, he warns, COVID is not like the flu. New variants evolve much faster, making annual shots inadequate. He believes that if things continue as they are, with new COVID variants emerging and reinfections happening rapidly, the majority of Americans may eventually grapple with some form of Long COVID. Let’s repeat that: At the current rate of infection, most Americans may get Long COVID.
[...]
LP: A recent JAMA study found that US adults with Long COVID are more prone to depression and anxiety – and they’re struggling to afford treatment. Given the virus’s impact on the brain, I guess the link to mental health issues isn’t surprising. PA: There are all kinds of weird things going on that could be related to COVID’s cognitive effects. I’ll give you an example. We’ve noticed since the start of the pandemic that accidents are increasing. A report published by TRIP, a transportation research nonprofit, found that traffic fatalities in California increased by 22% from 2019 to 2022. They also found the likelihood of being killed in a traffic crash increased by 28% over that period. Other data, like studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, came to similar conclusions, reporting that traffic fatalities hit a 16-year high across the country in 2021. The TRIP report also looked at traffic fatalities on a national level and found that traffic fatalities increased by 19%. LP: What role might COVID play? PA: Research points to the various ways COVID attacks the brain. Some people who have been infected have suffered motor control damage, and that could be a factor in car crashes. News is beginning to emerge about other ways COVID impacts driving. For example, in Ireland, a driver’s COVID-related brain fog was linked to a crash that killed an elderly couple. Damage from COVID could be affecting people who are flying our planes, too. We’ve had pilots that had to quit because they couldn’t control the airplanes anymore. We know that medical events among U.S. military pilots were shown to have risen over 1,700% from 2019 to 2022, which the Pentagon attributes to the virus.
[...]
LP: You’ve criticized the track record of the CDC and the WHO – particularly their stubborn denial that COVID is airborne. PA: They knew the dangers of airborne transmission but refused to admit it for too long. They were warned repeatedly by scientists who studied aerosols. They instituted protections for themselves and for their kids against airborne transmission, but they didn’t tell the rest of us to do that.
[...]
LP: How would you grade Biden on how he’s handled the pandemic? PA: I’d give him an F. In some ways, he fails worse than Trump because more people have actually died from COVID on his watch than on Trump’s, though blame has to be shared with Republican governors and legislators who picked ideological fights opposing things like responsible masking, testing, vaccination, and ventilation improvements for partisan reasons. Biden’s administration has continued to promote the false idea that the vaccine is all that is needed, perpetuating the notion that the pandemic is over and you don’t need to do anything about it. Biden stopped the funding for surveillance and he stopped the funding for renewing vaccine advancement research. Trump allowed 400,000 people to die unnecessarily. The Biden administration policies have allowed more than 800,000 to 900,000 and counting.
[...]
LP: The situation with bird flu is certainly getting more concerning with the CDC confirming that a third person in the U.S. has tested positive after being exposed to infected cows. PA: Unfortunately, we’re repeating many of the same mistakes because we now know that the bird flu has made the jump to several species. The most important one now, of course, is the dairy cows. The dairy farmers have been refusing to let the government come in and inspect and test the cows. A team from Ohio State tested milk from a supermarket and found that 50% of the milk they tested was positive for bird flu viral particles.
[...]
PA: There’s a serious risk now in allowing the virus to freely evolve within the cow population. Each cow acts as a breeding ground for countless genetic mutations, potentially leading to strains capable of jumping to other species. If any of those countless genetic experiments within each cow prove successful in developing a strain transmissible to humans, we could face another pandemic – only this one could have a 58% death rate. Did you see the movie “Contagion?” It was remarkably accurate in its apocalyptic nature. And that virus only had a 20% death rate. If the bird flu makes the jump to human-to-human transition with even half of its current lethality, that would be disastrous.
#sars cov 2#covid 19#h5n1#bird flu#articles#long covid is def a global issue not just for those in the us and most countries aren't doing much better#regardless of how much lower the mortality rate for h5n1 may or may not become if/when it becomes transmissible between humans#having bird flu infect a population the majority of whose immune system has been decimated by sars2#to the point where the average person seems to have a hard time fighting off the common cold etc...#(see the stats of whooping cough/pertussis and how they're off the CHARTS this yr in the uk and aus compared to previous yrs?#in qld average no of cases was 242 over prev 4 yrs - there have been /3783/ diagnosed as of june 9 this yr and that's just in one state.#there's a severe shortage of meds for kids in aus bc of the demand and some parents visit +10 pharmacies w/o any luck)#well.#let's just say that i miss the days when ph orgs etc adhered to the precautionary principle and were criticised for 'overreacting'#bc nothing overly terrible happened in the end (often thanks to their so-called 'overreaction')#now to simply acknowledge the reality of an obviously worsening situation is to be accused of 'fearmongering'#🤷♂️#also putting long covid and bird flu aside for a sec:#one of the wildest things that everyone seems to overlook that conor browne and others on twt have been saying for yrs#is that the effects of the covid pandemic extend far beyond the direct impacts of being infected by the virus itself#we know sars2 rips apart immune system+attacks organs. that in effect makes one more susceptible to other viruses/bacterial infections etc#that in turn creates increased demand for healthcare services for all kinds of carers and medications#modern medicine and technology allows us to provide often effective and necessary treatment for all kinds of ailments#but what if there's not enough to go around? what happens when the demand is so high that it can't be provided fast enough -- or at all?#(that's assuming you can even afford it)#what happens when doctors and nurses and other healthcare workers keep quitting due to burnout from increased patients and/or illness#because they themselves do not live in a separate reality and are not any more sheltered from the effects of constant infection/reinfection#of sars2 and increased susceptibility to other illnesses/diseases than the rest of the world?#this is the 'new normal' that's being cultivated (the effects of which are already blatantly obvious if you're paying attention)#and importantly: it. doesn't. have. to. be. this. way.

Not to be old, but I am thinking about things we lost with the end of over the air TV syndication as a common cultural vector.
I was in a conversation (several conversations) about where to start with Star Trek, and where people started, and ended up formulating the thought that the best way to start is to just randomly encounter whatever happens to be on at the time and go from there. (I know a few people a little older than I am who started with The Animated Series which is a hell of a starting point.) And for decades that meant random reruns in syndication.
Then I just posted about the role of M*A*S*H in my childhood, and that too was all about it just being on kind of in the background all the time.
Then @piratecaptainscaptainpirates posted about seeing declining participation in OFMD stuff, and I was thinking about the same thing that happened gradually after the TAZ Balance finale, and then about fandoms for old shows (both recent-old, someone I follow has been posting a lot of Gallavant gifs? And old-old, like @frommybookbook with Perry Mason), and then, of course, Star Trek.
How much of Star Trek being THE fandom show is due to those years in the 70s and early 80s when TOS was in syndication at whatever random time on whatever local station? (similarly in the US with Doctor Who through the 80s on local PBS stations) When new fans can just happen upon the source material by turning on the TV on a Saturday afternoon, or every weeknight at 7, etc etc.
Idk, I'm sure someone with an actual scholarly background has written something about this, and idk what this means for the future of our little subculture(s), it just made me ponder the landscape that I grew up in that simply does not exist now.
#From my TAZ experience:#Some people continue to be deeply in it#And others become sleeper agents#I would consider myself a sleeper agent for TAZ at this point#Honestly the IWTV show reactivated a different sleeper agent lol#Also I still have an idea for a Trek fic that someday (someday!) I will write#There's also still a couple of taz fics I keep meaning to go back and reread and finish#That I was reading at the start of the pandemic but then Brain Broke#(I did not read ANYTHING books or fic for a couple of years)

Sammy's wrangling the kids again...
#you know what woulda been great?#if there'd been a properly-edited and non-rushed and non-pandemic-crippled episode#where Sammy had been going off hot and Darius was trying to calm her down#woulda been great to parallel with this#especially if it wasn't the sloppiest part of the prior series#sammy gutierrez#darius bowman#jwct#chaos theory#yeah I'm very bitter#but also the point remains that this is a bit of a callback....#also I love that Sammy's assertive now#MAYBE A LITTLE TOO MUCH SO#but contrast this to her reluctance to ruffle feathers in the gang before

i feel like i'm a weird candidate for sex therapy bc it's like yeah on the one hand i grew up evangelical and repressed and on the other hand i've spent ten years doing queery theory and hanging out in more or less exclusively queer spaces and deconstructing everything to the point where i've got nothing left that makes sense so i can talk about gender and sexuality with a ton of nuance and understanding of historical and cultural context and also there's a part of my brain that still secretly believes i'm going to hell for it
but i have already done so much work on unlearning that to the point where i have circled around to a completely different issue, which is that i objectively believe it's fine to want whatever you want, and even though my instinct is that this doesn't apply to me i know that's unhelpful and i should ignore those thoughts because they're not true, but also i have absolutely no idea what i want and even less idea how to label it because i'm too aware that labels only describe our current cultural constructions of identities that actually don't adequately match how i understand myself bc i spent too much time thinking about premodern conceptions of gender and sexuality and got myself stuck in a corner with it
so like. i already therapised myself a lot. i've thought a lot about identity and how it works. i've done so much challenging of unhelpful thoughts and dealing with trauma responses and whatever. i have quite an advanced understanding on that front and frankly have probably taken it too far at times. but the basics of "what do you actually want, néide"? nah. fuck if i know
people who know this much about queer theory should be better at queer practice. unfortunately,
#i can talk the talk! i know all the words! i objectively need fewer words at this point!#maybe talk therapy is the last thing i need and i should just go out and get laid#i do believe this would help HOWEVER I REFER YOU TO MY PREVIOUS POSTS ON THIS TOPIC#RE: BEING DISABLED DURING A PANDEMIC#and also mostly ace and repressed as hell and trans and genuinely not particularly attractive#and also not spending much time with people my own age which is a major barrier#so. the purpose of the therapy is to get to a point where i can go out and get laid lmfao#if only i can overcome those practical barriers#personal

Rei in official stuff that’s not manga/Comic Gene related
1) In Yoruwa Honoka there’s a picture of him that changes into Qta, who’s also on a Yoruwa Honoka promotional art posted on the Zingai app
2) On an actual official knk art released on the Zingai app
3) On Fight Song for one millisecond
4) On the “All about the balloon disease” extras from Insomnia
#kara no kioku#bestie is unloved fr bc those are cameos im sure eve has no saying on those#except the Zingai art thing#I could be wrong but I feel that art was released either by the end of 2020 or at some point during 2021#wanna say 2021 bc the manga was more stablished then but i do not remember#i got the Kara no Kioku I can’t remember shit#also I don’t remember when the Zingai app came out I know it was during the pandemic but I don’t remember when#anyway yeh I think he asked for that one to promote the manga or whatever knk first year was rough as hell#any promotion was good promotion#still sadge the boy tm only gets four things and two of them are by the same person

Please check out RYO Dance&Training channel. He has a playlist with 8 exile tribe songs
There are other users that makes workout routines based from exile tribe songs, but i love RYO’s videos the most because he uses the same dance steps from the original choreo for the chorus/hooks
It’s thanks to him I can dance along to JSB3 songs now 🕺

#curious observation time#not trying to point fingers or invoke any level of drama#and please someone point out if i've missed something#but i do think it is a tad odd#or at least very telling#that....zero (0) people in kpop have#commented at all on liam from 1D dying#when people are crawling out of the woodwork left and right#to give tributes and condolences#i'm sure there is a lot less overlap there#with people who ever actually interacted with him#but the silence feels extra loud when every global non-korean boy group#from the last....3-4 decades at this point#has said SOMETHING#again i know it's not really how kpop operates#to comment on current events or really....anything outside of loving their fans#and maybe it's the drug connection#or all the commentary about consequences of making kids into celebrities#that makes them not want to touch it with a ten foot pole but#it's really kind of driving home what a bubble kpop lives in for me#like this alternate universe where nothing else happens in the world except kpop#which i think is why i got sucked in during the pandemic#but now that the world has gone back to normal#it does sometimes feel like a weird place to be#but also#if dating and smoking and a tipsy scooter ride is the epitome of scandal#where do you even put larger world problems#sorry this has taken a turn#the escapism of kpop is one if it's draws#but sometimes it feels bizarre to be in here and realize how much you're ignoring

The fact that Shawn canonically enjoys Magnum PI like of course he does. First of all he grew up in the 80s. Second of all Thomas Magnum is running around Hawai'i in booty shorts and half buttoned up hawaiian shirts, flirting with anything that moves, hanging out with his besties and solving cases by throwing lemons at people.
#Psych#At some point during the pandemic when me and my mum were both working from home#We just started watching reruns of Magnum#And at first I found him really annoying because he's spectacularly bad at his job half of the time#But now he's so blorbo to me. Also I get why people were really into Tom Selleck back then#Macks Musings#Ananas

oh my god. a manga where everyones actually wearing masks???
edit: NEVERMIND jumped the gun here it was just for one scene cos they were at a nail salon 😭
edit 2: hmm actually. depending on how recently this manga was drawn it could just be reflective of how not everyone wears masks. the customers are wearing masks in the salon but outside usually not but Sometimes. they are
edit 3: I WAS RIGHT??
#in an era where i feel like there was a VERY short period (in western fandom at least)#where masks and covid were even mentioned in fic and art#before it dropped off completely and all fiction lived in a fantasy universe without covid...#BRO I GOT TRICKED#hmm iirc wearing a mask in japan isnt required outside anymore. so that would track#but also maybe the artist just didnt want to draw masks all the time LMAO#ok ill be honest at this point i think i just misread the situation 😭 man it would be interesting for someone to like.#draw masks all the time..... the elusive artist that likes to draw masks more than faces#i should practice drawing people with masks...#MY HEART CANT TAKE THIS ANYMORE LMAO#ok now im Really sure its just a case of wanting to show the main characters faces and not wanting to draw masks all the time#two characters have met outside for the first time and theyre both wearing masks#ok theres another bit where a character says 'good thing the flights are running again'#which i must assume is a reference to international travel being restricted at the beginning of covid#so wow.... i was right..................#idk when this was released but it must have been drawn closer to the beginning of the pandemic#the manga is internet love by urino kiko btw#hmmm it says released 2023.. thats the tankobon tho idk if it was serialised and when that happened#ok yeah serialised from late 2022... thats quite far into the pandemic actually. interesting

personally, i think if some sort of apocalypse happened, we wouldn't immediately collapse and get set back hundreds of years wrt technology, infrastructure, etc. it's not like every engineer, doctor, construction workers, etc. are going to also be wiped out. and even under the constant pressure and threat of capitalism, people go into these careers wanting to do good. (depending on how the apocalypse is started/how it happens) there would probably be a few rough years at first but people are really good at getting their shit together
#also idk. this might be putting too much faith in people. maybe we'll just create fallout irl#if this all sounds like nonsense i got 3 hours of sleep and im running solely on adderall and coffee (:#new argument for keeping physical media: knowledge being preserved if the internet and most computers get destroyed#and yeah there would be several attempts to rebuild capitalism but look at how at the beginning of the pandemic people got a slight taste o#freedom and realized what they were being deprived of. like i watched a lot of people i know get 'radicalized' in real time#unfortunately only one i know took an interest in communism while the others are just radlibs :/#and also knowing physical skills like sewing. gardening. basic chemistry. food preservation. and hunting would help#ive thought a lot about this because the adults in my family constantly talk about what theyd do in the apocalypse#the real answer is dying of cholera or dysentery if they insist on the individualistic isolationist route#also this is not me thinking that once the weight of capitalism lifts everyone will automatically be cool with each other and build a utopi#my main point is that i dont think we'll lose Everything#these tags are so long im so sorry

warm up???
little frog lad
a different kind of bloom
we think of rot as a solitary thing, i think lying in the fetal position on an unmade bed hugging a pillow to your chest, praying that it’s spared when the skin slides off your bones and the house caves in on you alone but have we not all rotted before? will we not all rot again? scrolling for miles, addicted, thousands of censored words tattooed on our corneas the coroner will say the cause of death is the social rot we all hold close to our heart- the sign of being teens when the world stopped but were we not rotting together? did the rot not spread? our parents will weep for children lost to fairy lights and little frog lads to mushroom earrings and eyeliner on lips to pronouns and pride flags and the beginning of being forever fifteen, forever realizing that the rot clears away the exterior and the bone underneath is something unifying, a reminder that we are alive beneath the skin we wear when there are no expectations, when there is no social norm to conform to, when the rot seeps through the perfect child and exposes the rest- the messy, the sad, the lonely- to the world. will we ever recover? will we ever find ourselves again? will we ever need to?
a commentary on the rise of alternative individualism (and the fall to yet another form of social commodification). ironically, this will be posted to tiktok.
#i say rot in this too many times. but i like it#also i never got the kawaii-ness of frogs. or mushrooms. and they just felt like the new mustache tattoos of the 2020s#it was also like… the point when being alt was trendy and being weird and funky was cool#and i really appreciate that aspect of the era#in a time when so much was taken away from us by the pandemic#but i feel like the ‘cutesy’ mushrooms and frogs and everything was just a way to make alternative fashion and subculture palatable#because suddenly it was cute and trendy instead of found out of necessity and oppression and rebellion#does any of this make sense. idk#jac writes#poems#poetry#poet on tumblr#poems of tumblr#original poem#dead poets society#alternative#alt girl#2020

I still mask because I can't avert my eyes from the obvious signs that it has never gone away since 2020. Like, I'm often not even good at noticing subtlety IRL, but these signs are not hard to find. People are in denial.
AND I still avoid eating in restaurants because eating is the one thing you have to take off your mask for, and I am not doing that in some indoor and enclosed environment where hundreds if not thousands of people have been unmasked that day alone.
Also just... thank you so much for making this blog ^^;;
😷
#i feel this so so much.#people really are in denial and believe they're exempt from reality#frustrating and infuriating feel like understatements at this point.#and i too don't feel comfortable eating indoors at aaallll.#i would need to be the only person in the restaurant in order for me to feel comfortable with that. and even then are the employees masking#if I'm not at home i 100% prefer to eat somewhere as isolated as possible.#ideally somewhere with a comfortable view and lots of nature around me to add a layer of safety and ease.#during this course im taking I've been enjoying my lunch at a street pier and finding some ease with watching the view of the river & plant#it's the little things that help.#also of course!!! I'm so so glad this blog is serving as a safe space for people! :)#fr I'm really happy to hear you're appreciating it ty for letting me know ^_^#thank you for sharing 😷💛#covid#i still mask because#covid isn't over#covid is airborne#covid pandemic#covid awareness#ask queue
