LADY IN THE LAKE (2024): Frustrating seven-part Apple TV+ adaptation of the 2019 Laura Lippman novel (not to be confused with the 1943 Raymond Chandler novel), set in Baltimore in the late sixties, about an unhappy Jewish housewife, Maddie Morgenstern (Natalie Portman), who leaves her awful husband (Brett Gelman) and moves into a predominantly Black neighborhood, where she starts hooking up with a Black cop (Y'lan Noel) and manages to parlay her discovery of the body of a dead Black woman named Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) into a new career as an investigative reporter.
Portman is pretty good, but Cleo's story, which unfolds in flashback, is so much more compelling than Maddie's (aided by Ingram's formidably complex performance), and Maddie's naivete about the city's entrenched color lines becomes so grating, that one quickly starts to wonder why the narrative centers Maddie to the degree that it does (except that Portman is the bigger star). The show loses the plot repeatedly and is at least one episode too long — the sixth episode, which includes a hallucinatory musical number as Maddie lies comatose after a near-fatal hate crime, is so obnoxious (and so narratively dispensable) that I almost gave up — but it recovers somewhat with a strong finale that addresses some but not all of the story's flaws. CONTAINS LESBIANS? No. VERDICT: You could probably take the existing footage of this show and reedit it into a truly outstanding five-episode miniseries, but as it stands, it's a very mixed bag, and too jumbled to be really satisfying.

Based on Laura Lippman's novel, Lady in the Lake is a seven-episode limited series that delves into race relations in Baltimore at a pivotal time in the city's history. Natalie Portman stars as an investigative journalist who tries to solve the murders of two young women, one Black and one white. All of the episodes are directed by acclaimed director Alma Har'el, and Portman said that getting the opportunity to work with her was one of the things she loved most about making the series.
Lady in the Lake is currently streaming on Apple TV+.

Friday Night Movie ... Shia LaBeouf's semi-autobiographical 'Honey Boy' (with Noah Jupe, Lucas Hedges, and Shia LaBeouf playing his own father)
From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har'el brings to life a young actor's stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father through cinema and dreams. Fictionalizing his childhood's ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har'el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Artist and musician FKA Twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har'el's feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope.

Trivia ...
Shia LaBeouf was arrested for public intoxication in July of 2017 in Savannah, Georgia. He was ordered to attend a 10 week rehab program, where he discovered that he had PTSD and began writing the screenplay for Honey Boy.

Friday Releases for July 19
Friday is the busiest day of the week for new releases, so we've decided to collect them all in one place. Friday Releases for July 19 include Twisters, Crumb Catcher, Bando Stone and The New World, and more.
Twisters
Twisters, the new movie from Lee Isaac Chung, is out today.
Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
Crumb Catcher
Crumb Catcher, the new movie from Chris Skotchdopole, is out today.
At a remote estate in upstate New York, newlyweds Leah (Ella Rae Peck) and Shane (Rigo Garay) celebrate their honeymoon, but a pall hangs over their union. She works for the publisher who will be releasing his debut novel, a lightly autobiographical examination of family trauma, alcoholism, and the immigrant experience. Barely suppressed tensions over family trauma would be enough kindling for a blowup, but Leah and Shane’s marriage is truly tested by the appearance of two weirdos with entrepreneurial zeal and a half-baked blackmail plot: John (John Speredakos) and Rose (Lorraine Farris). They’re looking for investors for John’s latest invention, a culinary breakthrough called the Crumb Catcher — and they won’t take no for an answer.
Clear Cut
Clear Cut, the new movie from Brian Skiba, is out today.
Every moment is filled with danger for a man cutting timber in the Pacific Northwest, but Jack becomes the target of a brutal assault from more than the elements in this action-packed thriller. As Jack ventures deeper into the woods, he crosses paths with a criminal band of madmen from his past intent on killing him before he can fight his way back to civilization.
